Summary

Bono--artist, activist, and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2--has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he's lived, the challenges he's faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him。

"When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd previously only sketched in songs。 The people, places, and possibilities in my life。 Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me。 Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept。 A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book。 I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands。 In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist。 Surrender is the story of one pilgrim's lack of progress 。。。 With a fair amount of fun along the way。" --Bono

As one of the music world's most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono's career has been written about extensively。 But in Surrender, it's Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with。 In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2's unlikely journey to become one of the world's most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty。 Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life--and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him。

Surrender's subtitle, 40 Songs, One Story, is a nod to the book's forty chapters, which are each named after a U2 song。 Bono has also created forty original drawings for Surrender, which appear throughout the book。

This is an immense memoir poetically derived with plenty of back story。 A huge accomplishment for one of the worlds leading music artists。 Plenty of insights into this amazing artists life。 Very in-depth and compelling。I could not put the book down for a moment as I read through this intricately constructed memoir of one of the most interesting lives of popular music culture and popular music history。I have always been in “awe” of this highly creative artistic talent that I cannot put into words This is an immense memoir poetically derived with plenty of back story。 A huge accomplishment for one of the worlds leading music artists。 Plenty of insights into this amazing artists life。 Very in-depth and compelling。I could not put the book down for a moment as I read through this intricately constructed memoir of one of the most interesting lives of popular music culture and popular music history。I have always been in “awe” of this highly creative artistic talent that I cannot put into words。 But he most certainly has delivered。 A huge fan on many fronts and have seen live performances over the years。 My first U2 concert was the POP mart tour in Edmonton and have seen several other performances。 Though the first show floored me。 After that performance about a day later I had a very lucid dream…。。 I was in commonwealth stadium in what appeared to be daytime the day after the show。 The commonwealth stadium was empty and I was sitting in the seats as the members from U2 approached walking up to where I was seated with Bono leading and greeted me and started to ask “what I thought of their show, my perceptions etc! It was the strangest dream as it seemed very lucid and real and have never forgotten it。 (Need I mention I’m also a musician)。My family hailed from Ireland, in particular my mothers side。 Loughridge was the family name on my mothers side。 Sadly she passed away in 2012。 At any rate in some strange, almost magical way I’ve inherently felt some connection。 Maybe it’s some universal understanding in my psyche。 The things that went on when these guys were growing up in Ireland I believe somehow cataclysmically meld this group of 4 together to become one of the worlds biggest groups in modern history。 A story I am certain will long surpass their time。I believe they lived through some hard times in Ireland and however it is, the universe drew them together and pulled them together through the fabric of their lives and kept them together as one of the greatest rock bands indeed of the last 45 years。I believe that sadly some feel haste towards this group and Bono; citing their politically motivated views and humanitarian efforts are at times by some looked down upon。 Fact is the voices are needed, the good they have done with the fame and influence; to help those less fortunate even going so far as to sway governments to help the starving and the aids crisis, but also many other areas of the human condition including using their power of influence to motivate governments to do more humanitarian efforts to help in a world which is hurting。Many criticize Bono for dabbling with political matters。 But in my opinion many good things have been achieved because of their influence on the modern world and culture。 I think there should be more like Bono; that also have the power of celebrity and fame that should also be contributing to making the world a better place。 Nothing in this life is perfect! But for the efforts of Bono and U2 that have contributed time and effort; using fame and fortune to help make the world a better place is extremely commendable。This book is a memoir into an extraordinary life of a very artistic gifted individual who is immensely creative。 The music has always had something to say; it has meaning。 For millions around the globe the music resonates with them and inspires them。 Bono and U2 has had a tremendous impact on popular culture the world over。This book is a fascinating glimpse into an extraordinary life of one of the worlds most prolific music artists the world has ever seen or will ever see。 The reality is I feel Bono is misunderstood at times by some people。At any rate the book gives a glimpse into one of the most prolific extraordinary lives of one of the most prolific performers in music history。Highly recommend the book, if for nothing else some incredible prose on an amazing life, the back stories which in themselves are something to be read and of course insights from one of the worlds most amazing performers who is gifted beyond compare and in his own right! Thank you for the music Mr。Bono and sharing your amazing life with the world。PS: I had the pleasure of crossing with your dear friend Neil McCormick…。。 I alerted him regarding his book release in Canada…… which was significantly delayed due to copyrights in different English speaking territories and prompted his agent to look into the matter。 Neil kindly sent me a signed copy since I could not obtain a copy due to the above circumstance。My best to you Bono; to your career and to U2! May the latter leg of life serve you well! 。。。more

This is an extraordinary work of art。 I’ve long believed that in another life Bono would’ve been a great poet: this confirms he is also one this life。Not only is it an utterly beautiful version of autobiography, telling of a wonderful life in 40 songs rich with detail, anecdotes, wisdom, doubt, struggles, philosophical wonderings, quotations from an eclectic range of artists, writers & thinkers, spiritual searching, meetings with some of the most brilliant humans of the last 50+ years, & perhaps This is an extraordinary work of art。 I’ve long believed that in another life Bono would’ve been a great poet: this confirms he is also one this life。Not only is it an utterly beautiful version of autobiography, telling of a wonderful life in 40 songs rich with detail, anecdotes, wisdom, doubt, struggles, philosophical wonderings, quotations from an eclectic range of artists, writers & thinkers, spiritual searching, meetings with some of the most brilliant humans of the last 50+ years, & perhaps surprisingly for those that don’t “get” Bono or U2, with lashings of wit, wicked humour, laughter & absurdity。The audiobook is also: an extraordinary achievement with music, song snippets, & sound effects but most affecting of all, a warmth and intimacy of narration which makes it feel like you’re sitting across the kitchen table from (or more probably) in a restaurant or beer garden drinking wine with the gregarious, vivacious, messiah-anical, charming, self-deprecating, soul-searching, erudite man himself。 I read much of this book with my ear buds in: just us two in “conversation” & it was such an intimate & profound experience of Bono as artist, husband, friend, father, activist that I’m hard pressed to recall any other audiobook I’ve lived or enjoyed more。 I feel the need to repeat: it was such an intimate personal experience。I’m going to take a few day’s break then I’ll start again jumping between the audio & hard back versions depending on my mood/activity。Disclaimer: I am a die-hard U2 fan & have been since I was 14, but this is so much more than I conceived a memoir could be。 It felt like a personal tale that Paul had written just for me to hear。 It’s entirely likely most people who read it will feel the same。 。。。more

Lots of backstories and events that influenced the 40 songs mentioned。

Bono is a living contradiction。 A ten foot high Napoleonic ego with a voice to reach angles。 An unrepentant salesman who must be heard, compassionate, charitable, vulnerable, congruent, authentic, derrided yet loved。 Faith on legs。 And he tells a fine tale。 His life; his words。

3 1/2 stars。Not an easy read。A big book! It’s like lots of short stories—Lots of jumping all over the place。 Prose/poetry。I liked it, but wanted more about the family I guess。

Just finished reading this。 It is better than most of the U2 books previously published。 It is personal and has more depth that the average shallow U2 book。 Ireland's most famous conservative pro-capitalist celebrity humanitarian tells his side of the story。 While Bono could never be accused of being of the left, it is interesting to hear his views and memories of events and issues that shaped him and often made headlines。 Liked the music related stories the most。 Just finished reading this。 It is better than most of the U2 books previously published。 It is personal and has more depth that the average shallow U2 book。 Ireland's most famous conservative pro-capitalist celebrity humanitarian tells his side of the story。 While Bono could never be accused of being of the left, it is interesting to hear his views and memories of events and issues that shaped him and often made headlines。 Liked the music related stories the most。 。。。more

"Bono’s memoir can be read as a spiritual adventure story, a Pilgrim’s Progress with superyachts and supermodels (or as Bono jokes, 'The pilgrim’s lack of progress')。 On the one hand, it is called 'Surrender,' and this act of surrendering himself to a higher love remains a guiding hope in his life。" — David Brooks "Bono’s memoir can be read as a spiritual adventure story, a Pilgrim’s Progress with superyachts and supermodels (or as Bono jokes, 'The pilgrim’s lack of progress')。 On the one hand, it is called 'Surrender,' and this act of surrendering himself to a higher love remains a guiding hope in his life。" — David Brooks 。。。more
