Summary

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction。 Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales。

In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki—son of a giant—blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator。

Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants。 Once, when Thor's hammer is stolen, Thor must disguise himself as a woman—difficult with his beard and huge appetite—to steal it back。 More poignant is the tale in which the blood of Kvasir—the most sagacious of gods—is turned into a mead that infuses drinkers with poetry。 The work culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and rebirth of a new time and people。

Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose emerge these gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again。

It was fine。 Had a hard time caring about any of the stories and didn't really like the characters。 Confusing motivations and unlike most mythology, it lacked charming explanatory power (ie。 "And that's why the sun rises in the east")。I did like that there were some interesting parallels to Christianity。 It was fine。 Had a hard time caring about any of the stories and didn't really like the characters。 Confusing motivations and unlike most mythology, it lacked charming explanatory power (ie。 "And that's why the sun rises in the east")。I did like that there were some interesting parallels to Christianity。 。。。more

Underwhelming。 I was expecting Norse mythology to be a little more。。。epic? Most of the old tales were bland and uninteresting。

I always like reading Gaiman and this is a great collection of myths from him。 They’re written in a way that makes them easy to read and understand and they’re beautifully described and true to the original myths。 The myths are organized in a nice, chronological order that makes the entire collection feel like a larger story rather than just random short episodes。 Highly recommend for any fan of Rick Riordan or mythology in general。

It didn’t knock my socks off, but it was an entertaining read。

Fun and really easy to get through。 I listened to the audiobook, though I wish I had followed along in the book too, mostly to connect pronunciations and spellings in my head。 Oh well, I have to learn the spellings some other way。

Neil uses his talents to tell the tales of Norse Gods。 Great and fun read。

A bit slow to start because there are so many characters and concepts to introduce。 Once we get into the stories it's more interesting。 It's simply written and might be more fun to hear out loud than to read。 A good intro to Norse Mythology。 A bit slow to start because there are so many characters and concepts to introduce。 Once we get into the stories it's more interesting。 It's simply written and might be more fun to hear out loud than to read。 A good intro to Norse Mythology。 。。。more

This book was a delight from start to finish。 I don't know how accurate and true to the cannon these stories are (since this is pretty much my first introduction to Norse Mythology), but I still found it to be super enjoyable and interesting。 Besides, I feel like retellings of stories from old mythologies don't need to stick that much to the "cannon", because their whole point is to be retold and see how each person will tell differently the same story。Normally, I do my reviews by pointing out 3 This book was a delight from start to finish。 I don't know how accurate and true to the cannon these stories are (since this is pretty much my first introduction to Norse Mythology), but I still found it to be super enjoyable and interesting。 Besides, I feel like retellings of stories from old mythologies don't need to stick that much to the "cannon", because their whole point is to be retold and see how each person will tell differently the same story。Normally, I do my reviews by pointing out 3 things I liked and disliked about a book, but since these stories weren't made up and created by Neil, I can only judge it based on its writing style, which I had no issue with。Instead, I'll separate it like this:- The stories were super fun。 I found them all to be super interesting and the end even made feel quite upset。 This book certainly got me into Norse Mythology。-The writing style is simple, but in a good way。I saw that a lot of people find Neil's writing style to be boring。 Although, I understand why that is so, I find his more simplistic and not as crazy descriptive writing style to be very relaxing and easy to read。 I could see everything in my head really clearly and I didn't feel bored at any point。But I think it all just comes down to personal preference。- The way Neil retells these stories is really fun。The book made me laugh out loud a couple of times and it also made me feel really sad and bad for the characters。 As I mentioned this before, the writing was nice enough that I could see everything clearly enough in my head, so I was really invested into this book。- I don't think there is anything I didn't like about the book。Again, I don't know how accurate it is to the original sources (and I honestly don't care), and writing style might not be to your liking if you are more into really detailed and descriptive styles。 I think it just depends on the person。 For me, I didn't have any issues with neither of these things。Final thoughts:If you like Norse Mythology or want to learn more about it, I'd suggest reading this book。 Before getting into Norse Mythology, I only really knew stuff about Greek Mythology, which books that I read about I found to be a lot more darker and upsetting。 I was expecting this book to also make me quite uncomfortable at certain parts (old times were quite brutal and disturbing), but I didn't really have any of those issues。 So, the book was just really fun for me。 It's definitely a solid 5 ⭐ from me。 。。。more

‘Updated’ and relatable Norse mythology stories - enjoyable read。

A book that it's very hard to understand for some people。 I would recommend reading it beacuse it's very well made and the authour tried to simplify as possible as he could some interesting stories about gods。 First part of the book it's a little bit boring but u can understand later all the meanings of the book。 4 stars A book that it's very hard to understand for some people。 I would recommend reading it beacuse it's very well made and the authour tried to simplify as possible as he could some interesting stories about gods。 First part of the book it's a little bit boring but u can understand later all the meanings of the book。 4 stars 。。。more

Bias Disclaimer: Neil Gaiman is one of my two most favorite authors。The care and context with which Gaiman retells these myths/tales is astounding and fluid。 He distills the greatest parts of the epic sagas and weaves a seamless tapestry where everything feels like a natural progression。 It was also so interesting how his prose felt so grand/biblical in a way while also capturing the humanity/personality of each figure。 Absolutely loved it!

Zupełnie nie spodziewałem się, że będzie aż tak ciekawe。 Motywuje do szukania innych źródeł informacji o bogach nordyckich。

Neil Gaimen narrates his book of Norse Mythology and if you like these types of stories, you should check this out!

Mostly interesting throughout。 Some chapters are slower than others, naturally。 Not written too ‘heavily’ or in-depth which is a nice touch。 Sometimes the unfamiliar names of gods and characters can get confusing but Neil continues to reiterate who characters in context are。 4/5 stars

I’m glad I read this as an audio book because it made it more fun。

As expected, an excellent re-telling of classic stories from the mind and imagination of Neil。

This was an interesting book by Gaiman。 I don't think I read this in a way that does this justice。 NORSE MYTHOLOGY covers some of the well-known and forgotten stories from Norse mythology。 This book is intended to be read as atmospheric bedtime stories or around a campfire。 Maybe wrapped in blankets next to a fireplace。 It encapsulates all that is great about spoken word stories。 If you have a remote interest in Norse mythology, give this a read and go big when you do。My only real complaint is t This was an interesting book by Gaiman。 I don't think I read this in a way that does this justice。 NORSE MYTHOLOGY covers some of the well-known and forgotten stories from Norse mythology。 This book is intended to be read as atmospheric bedtime stories or around a campfire。 Maybe wrapped in blankets next to a fireplace。 It encapsulates all that is great about spoken word stories。 If you have a remote interest in Norse mythology, give this a read and go big when you do。My only real complaint is that I'm generally not a fan of anthology stories。 That being said, I don't see a book like this being told in any other way。 Clearly, I'm just being picky。 。。。more

Listened to the audiobook。 Gaiman is a great reader of his own work。 I really enjoyed this。 The myths are so different。 Unlike the Greek myths where most of them involve humans and their interactions with Gods - Humans just don't show up all that much。 And Loki (Odin's brother, not Thor's) - I don't want to spoil it。 As Neil says - he's complicated。Fascinating。 Well-told。 Listened to the audiobook。 Gaiman is a great reader of his own work。 I really enjoyed this。 The myths are so different。 Unlike the Greek myths where most of them involve humans and their interactions with Gods - Humans just don't show up all that much。 And Loki (Odin's brother, not Thor's) - I don't want to spoil it。 As Neil says - he's complicated。Fascinating。 Well-told。 。。。more

I read two stories in 2019 and then put it down and just couldn't get back to it until recently。 I am glad I did because when I made it a point to read a story a day it started to really be fun and Ragnorak came all too soon。 I read two stories in 2019 and then put it down and just couldn't get back to it until recently。 I am glad I did because when I made it a point to read a story a day it started to really be fun and Ragnorak came all too soon。 。。。more

I was very excited to pick this up as I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman’s novels。 I found this a curiosity。 It is a retelling of the ancient Norse myths in modern prose。 The style is lean and the sentences short。 The words flew off the pages with ease and, after an initial struggle getting the hook, I read two thirds of it in a single night - and I am not a fast reader usually。 The tales are often light-hearted and they cleverly flesh out these gods as fallibly human。 Thor is strong but slow-witted。 I was very excited to pick this up as I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman’s novels。 I found this a curiosity。 It is a retelling of the ancient Norse myths in modern prose。 The style is lean and the sentences short。 The words flew off the pages with ease and, after an initial struggle getting the hook, I read two thirds of it in a single night - and I am not a fast reader usually。 The tales are often light-hearted and they cleverly flesh out these gods as fallibly human。 Thor is strong but slow-witted。 Loki is sometimes mischievous, sometimes outright wicked and by the end ostensibly evil。 The others have a whiff of vanity and other human failings。 My only disappointment was that the tales of Ragnarok played out so quickly and almost as an afterthought。 That was surely the dramatic conclusion of the whole saga and yet it is rushed and… disappointing。 The book as a whole is enjoyable, but it’s like a starter when you wanted a big more of a real meal。 。。。more
