Summary

New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer concludes her young adult retelling of Rumpelstiltskin in this breathtaking sequel!

It isn't true, she wanted to whisper。 To lean forward and nuzzle her cheek against his temple。 To press him against the wall and mold her body to his。 I am not his。 I will never be his。

Serilda and Gild cannot break the curses that tether their spirits to Adalheid's haunted castle。 There they remain trapped for eternity。 On the night of the Endless Moon, the Erlking means to capture one of the seven gods and so be reunited with his lover, Perchta, who has been banished to the underworld。

But it soon becomes clear that the Erlking's hunger for vengeance won't be satisfied with a single wish, and his true intentions have the power to alter the mortal realm forever。

Serilda and Gild have no choice but to thwart his plans, all the while solving the mystery of Gild's forgotten name, and freeing all the ghosts kept in servitude to the dark ones。 As the evil forces gather, it seems only their love is strong enough to sustain them 。 。 。

3。5⭐️This book was good。 The ending was satisfying and I loved the dark fairytale aspect of it。 My only complain is that approximately the first half of the book was pretty slow。 There wasn’t much action BUT the setting, the atmosphere and the characters carried it so it didn’t seem that slow

I have no idea why I needed a little extra push to start this duology。 I have no idea why I had to be granted a review copy from Cursed by Faber and Faber through Netgalley to read the first book。 I love fairytale retellings。 I love everything Marissa Meyer has written so far。 I have an endless fascination for the wonderful classical Schubert song about the Erlkönig。 This series was a perfect fit! And I indeed loved the first book and I was even happier that I could read on after finishing that I have no idea why I needed a little extra push to start this duology。 I have no idea why I had to be granted a review copy from Cursed by Faber and Faber through Netgalley to read the first book。 I love fairytale retellings。 I love everything Marissa Meyer has written so far。 I have an endless fascination for the wonderful classical Schubert song about the Erlkönig。 This series was a perfect fit! And I indeed loved the first book and I was even happier that I could read on after finishing that one。I've rarely read a book where everything comes so beautifully together as in this book。 The first book was mainly one big build up and even in this second book it takes a long while before we get the feeling our characters are getting somewhere when it comes to their happily ever after。 But once the finale starts, once we know what's going on and what everyone's fighting for, it's impossible to put the book down。 And while reading the last chapter I ever shedded a few tears。Where the first book was very much a Rumplestiltskin retelling, this book is more about the wild hunt and the power of our heroine's storytelling。 I don't want to give too much away, I actually think the blurb already does, but there is so much mythology, such an amazing mix of myth and legend and it's amazing how the author builds everything up。 She left so many hints and gave us so much information and yet I only puzzled things together once they were almost revealed。I also loved the emotionally journey of our heroine and her prince。 During this book my heart has been shattered at least five times, but most of the times the author also glued my heart back together again。 I love how this romance isn't consuming the entire book, how both characters also function without each other and yet it's so clear that they love each other and they firmly believe that one way or another there is a future for them where they can live together。This is a story about stories and maybe it's the author who has been blessed by the God of storytelling。 Who knows with legends。 。。。more

There is so much about this two book series that I hate。 There are such scenes of cruelty, violence, tragedy, and darkness that just seeps through to those parts of my center that leaves me sullen and weak。 I feel at times the cruelty and wickedness of the powerful evil just keeps beating the reader down more and more and more。 But the writing is so good, and the storytelling is so sound, that I can't help but also love this and recommend it to anyone that loves these type of dark fairy tales。 S There is so much about this two book series that I hate。 There are such scenes of cruelty, violence, tragedy, and darkness that just seeps through to those parts of my center that leaves me sullen and weak。 I feel at times the cruelty and wickedness of the powerful evil just keeps beating the reader down more and more and more。 But the writing is so good, and the storytelling is so sound, that I can't help but also love this and recommend it to anyone that loves these type of dark fairy tales。 Some might read it and think that I am soft and squishy and it really isn't that bad。 And guess what? It was an absolute to honor to be able to read and review this book。 I’m a huge fan of the first book, and I’ve always loved retellings of fairytales。 I’ve always had a soft spot for the Rumplestiltskin story, and this duology tops the list。 It’s such a magical story with fantastic characters, from the heroes to the villains to the monsters, with a very satisfying end to the story。 It was darker than I expected, which just made the story even more engaging。 I’ve read almost everything Meyer has It was an absolute to honor to be able to read and review this book。 I’m a huge fan of the first book, and I’ve always loved retellings of fairytales。 I’ve always had a soft spot for the Rumplestiltskin story, and this duology tops the list。 It’s such a magical story with fantastic characters, from the heroes to the villains to the monsters, with a very satisfying end to the story。 It was darker than I expected, which just made the story even more engaging。 I’ve read almost everything Meyer has written, and I can’t wait to see what comes next。 。。。more

I'd give this book 3。5 stars, maybe 3。75, if fractions were allowed。 I don't have any major complaints about the story overall, or how it was wrapped up。 It definitely helped that I listened to this during Halloween-time; it was certainly seasonally-appropriate! *Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC* I'd give this book 3。5 stars, maybe 3。75, if fractions were allowed。 I don't have any major complaints about the story overall, or how it was wrapped up。 It definitely helped that I listened to this during Halloween-time; it was certainly seasonally-appropriate! *Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC* 。。。more

I loved the Lunar Chronicles for their new take on the classic fairy tales。 Cursed and the Gilded series continues that。 Like the other stories, I was more interested in the action than the romance of the thing。 But what is a fairy tale without a romance? The heroines are more well rounded and independent than traditionally, which is what makes them so interesting。

Sara

After practically screaming in frustration at the end of the first book, now I almost want to cry that the story is through。 Meyer is a fantastic writer, building deeply thought out worlds and complex plots with twists and turns that keep your heart racing as you read。 A truly fantastic duology!

Cursed is the sequel to Gilded, the Rumpelstiltskin retelling by NYT best-selling American author, Marissa Meyer。 It’s the summer solstice, some seven weeks since Serilda has been cursed by the Erlking, her spirit tethered to Adalheid Castle, just as Gild’s has been, and the day she is to wed His Grim。 She’s carrying Gild’s baby, due on the Winter Solstice, but holds back that information from the Erlking and Gild both, afraid of the reaction。 Each full moon when the Erlking takes the dark ones Cursed is the sequel to Gilded, the Rumpelstiltskin retelling by NYT best-selling American author, Marissa Meyer。 It’s the summer solstice, some seven weeks since Serilda has been cursed by the Erlking, her spirit tethered to Adalheid Castle, just as Gild’s has been, and the day she is to wed His Grim。 She’s carrying Gild’s baby, due on the Winter Solstice, but holds back that information from the Erlking and Gild both, afraid of the reaction。 Each full moon when the Erlking takes the dark ones out to hunt, Gild and Serilda search the castle for their not-quite-dead corpses although, even if Serilda finds hers, could she free her spirit and leave? While the ghosts of five children so dear to her, killed by the Erlking, are still under his control and prevented from eternal rest in Verloren, she has to stick around, see out the deal she made: marry the Alder King, pose as the happy Alder Queen, hand over the baby at birth。 Except the baby was promised to Gild in payment for gold-spinning…The conclusion of this tale is just as enthralling as the start, taking several twists in the lead up to a nail-biting climax, before a satisfying resolution and the requisite happy ever after。 There’s plenty of magic, villainous demons, monsters of all stripe and colour and inclination, and this half features a feisty young self-crowned queen。 There are revelations and reunions, shocks and surprises。Meyer manages to insert humour and heartache, and gives her characters some wise words and insightful observations about human nature and life。 Often, Serilda sees her gift as a curse: “Have you been cursed by the god of stories? Does every word out of your mouth somehow land everyone you love in danger?” When she is finally able to make that complaint to Wyrdith in person: “I do understand,” said Wyrdith。 “Stories are powerful。” They threaded their fingers through Serilda’s。 “What you don’t understand is that you have not yet written the ending。”While there is some recap, it really is essential to read the first volume before embarking on this one: assuredly not a hardship。 Encompassing two volumes, Meyer’s retelling of this folk tale runs to almost a thousand pages, yet the reader is never bored; rather, impatience to learn where the story will next go keeps the pages rapidly turning。 So enjoyable, this is Marissa Meyer at her best。 This unbiased review is from a copy provided by Text Publishing。 。。。more

This sequel is fairytale driven by desperate emotions。 Place to place, person to person, it packs in a lot。 Though it was a little slower in the first half and I think it got too busy and muddied in the last quarter。 It’s still wildly entertaining and a genius build from the great Marissa Meyer。 More thoughts coming soon。

4。5 stars Meyer did not disappoint me。 There's a reason I consider her one of my all-time favourite authors and this just blew me away。 I read this in one sitting because I couldn't put it down。 I'll be honest, I did have a feeling about a certain plot point and we got something similar to my feeling but the execution of that moment and the way stuff happened - it still had such a huge impact on me。 I love the characters and that's a huge reason why I enjoyed this so much - I just loved Serilda 4。5 stars Meyer did not disappoint me。 There's a reason I consider her one of my all-time favourite authors and this just blew me away。 I read this in one sitting because I couldn't put it down。 I'll be honest, I did have a feeling about a certain plot point and we got something similar to my feeling but the execution of that moment and the way stuff happened - it still had such a huge impact on me。 I love the characters and that's a huge reason why I enjoyed this so much - I just loved Serilda's characters。 The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that I do have some small things I wasn't the hugest fan of and the ending wasn't quite as good as the rest but that might change when I reread because I did read this is one sitting and I feel like I maybe didn't give the ending as much attention as the start。 So, I'm curious to see whether my thoughts change。 My biggest complaint is (view spoiler)[ Perchta's character。 We get the stories about her and the Erlking but I just wanted more。 I still don't feel like I get their dynamic and I just wanted more from their characters and dynamic。 (hide spoiler)]Finally, I adored the way Meyer chose to retell the original story - it was clever and worked so well and I really enjoyed the retelling。 Overall, super glad I read this。 A great duology that I will reread and I'd recommend。 。。。more

This was a really fun duology。 Marissa Meyer is the queen of retellings and Rebecca Soler is the queen of her narrations。 This book is really long (16 1/2 hours) and at some points you can really tell it's long, but overall the pace moves along smoothly and a lot happens。 I went into this not remembering every detail of this first book, so I read some spoilers I could find and it was enough。 We get enough background information without it seeming repetitive and explanatory of the first book, and This was a really fun duology。 Marissa Meyer is the queen of retellings and Rebecca Soler is the queen of her narrations。 This book is really long (16 1/2 hours) and at some points you can really tell it's long, but overall the pace moves along smoothly and a lot happens。 I went into this not remembering every detail of this first book, so I read some spoilers I could find and it was enough。 We get enough background information without it seeming repetitive and explanatory of the first book, and it's woven in nicely with what is happening in book 2。 In this book, I continued to like Serilda's protective nature, especially towards the 5 ghost children who's death she blames on herself in the first book。 I liked how her relationship with Gild grew slowly since Serilda became betrothed/married to the Erlking。 One of my new favorite characters was Agatha who was the ghost of the weapons master at the castle。 Like I said, a lot happened in this book and it was really fun to see all the pieces start to click together and had me really wondering how everything was going to turn out。 The ending wrapped everything up in a nice way and had me really enjoying my time with these characters。 It made for a good duology。Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

This book was even better than the last one。 I thought that Gilded was one of the best books I had ever read, but now this one overtakes it。 Marissa Meyer is a great storyteller and she makes you feel like you are experiencing the characters' problems。 Every one of the books that I've read from her had great craftmanship and she made the characters pop out of the pagesThe last 50 pages made me cry my eyes out。 I could almost feel the character's pain throughout the book。 This book was even better than the last one。 I thought that Gilded was one of the best books I had ever read, but now this one overtakes it。 Marissa Meyer is a great storyteller and she makes you feel like you are experiencing the characters' problems。 Every one of the books that I've read from her had great craftmanship and she made the characters pop out of the pagesThe last 50 pages made me cry my eyes out。 I could almost feel the character's pain throughout the book。 。。。more

I absolutely enjoyed this book, if it felt a bit too long。 But when I think back to every part of this book, I liked every part and everything is important and is there for a reason, so I can't think of anything that shouldn't be there。 And then I think it might be that this duology would have feel better as a trilogy as Gilded also felt a bit too long。 Other than that this was great, so very emotional, I spent most of this book with bated breath, both wanting and dreading the next page。 It was I absolutely enjoyed this book, if it felt a bit too long。 But when I think back to every part of this book, I liked every part and everything is important and is there for a reason, so I can't think of anything that shouldn't be there。 And then I think it might be that this duology would have feel better as a trilogy as Gilded also felt a bit too long。 Other than that this was great, so very emotional, I spent most of this book with bated breath, both wanting and dreading the next page。 It was actually a moment that after giving us so much hope it was completely crushed again and I stopped reading for a whole day until I was able to pick it up again。 All this story despite being a retelling is so creative, and descriptive, the world building, magic system and characters so perfect。 I still love that the handsome villain remains the handsome villain by the end, without finding the goodnes in him or failling in love with oht hero, as is so common lately。 I loved the gods and their interpretations, and the ending was so satisfying, after so many hardships, I was ready for a bittersweet ending but I have to say I am very happy this was a HEA。 。。。more

This was a really well paced book。 When I read Gilded (book 1) I had a hard time pushing through it。 It started a little slow, and it was too easy to put down。 But from page one, this story gripped me。 I jumped right back in to the story, and into the action。 It wasn’t overwhelming, but it didn’t ever lull。The villains! I hate them so much, and the author starts to tease a softness to some that you have to start to think about。 I was appalled that I could begin to wonder if there was something good there。 It was so well written, the depth of the characters。 That they have some kind of morality somewhere, even when it doesn’t extend to the extent that would make them good。 The gods。 Goodness, the lore in this world is so intrinsically tied up into this story, and it works。 The way it builds on itself, and reveals new things… I love it。 Which leads me to…The retelling… it’s SO WELL DONE。 The way it finally culminates in more than a gold spinner… the way it is revealed。 I LOVED IT。 I had tears and tingles and I just adore how the mystery unravels itself。 💛💛💛💛Our heroes! So we have the same cast of characters: Serilda, the children, the ghosts, Gild, some villagers… and we finally see Gild’s sister in real life and she is SO COOL。 I love seeing Gild grow。 I love seeing Serilda deal with the pregnancy and her heartache, and her strength in all of the adversity。 All in all… This is one of my favorite conclusions to a story。 It was so good。Also: AUDIOBOOK!!!! I read this series as an audiobook。 I’ve said it once and I’ll say it forever, Rebecca Soler is AMAZING。 If you can, listen to the audiobook, and then look at her backlist and find every book she’s voiced and listen to those。 She’s so talented at emoting and making you feel what the characters are feeling。 She makes magical stories MORE magical。 Always worth it to listen to her narration。 🥰 。。。more
