Summary

In this genre-bending YA debut, a Chinese American girl monetizes her strange new invisibility powers by discovering and selling her wealthy classmates’ most scandalous secrets。

Alice Sun has always felt invisible at her elite Beijing international boarding school, where she’s the only scholarship student among China’s most rich and influential teens。 But then she starts uncontrollably turning invisible—actually invisible。

When her parents drop the news that they can no longer afford her tuition, even with the scholarship, Alice hatches a plan to monetize her strange new power—she’ll discover the scandalous secrets her classmates want to know, for a price。

But as the tasks escalate from petty scandals to actual crimes, Alice must decide if it’s worth losing her conscience—or even her life。

nothing i love more than the girlboss and the supportive malewife dynamic。 you will always have my heart, alice sun and henry li, but especially, ann liang, for solving the conflict in this book in a way that centers alice and her own wits with henrys support, as opposed to making her seem desperate and having to beg to stay or need to be rescued。 this feels both quieter and bigger than that, as simple as coming home and as dizzying and all-encompassing as the wind rushing in around us。 It feels nothing i love more than the girlboss and the supportive malewife dynamic。 you will always have my heart, alice sun and henry li, but especially, ann liang, for solving the conflict in this book in a way that centers alice and her own wits with henrys support, as opposed to making her seem desperate and having to beg to stay or need to be rescued。 this feels both quieter and bigger than that, as simple as coming home and as dizzying and all-encompassing as the wind rushing in around us。 It feels like a thousand banished and buried moments have been building up to this—to us alone and untethered and weak with wanting—and maybe they have。detailed review coming tomorrow when i am bored at work。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 you see, this was good。however, it could've been so much better it kind of pisses me off。 i mean, if the author had explored the premise, we could have had great academic rivals to lovers (like nicolibby or something almost as good as that, as i recognize it is hard to get to that level) and a dark academia vibe to the whole thing, together with this gossip girl scenario the tasks bring to the story。 it would have been awesome。the novel ended up as a romcom when it could've been so much more。 "t you see, this was good。however, it could've been so much better it kind of pisses me off。 i mean, if the author had explored the premise, we could have had great academic rivals to lovers (like nicolibby or something almost as good as that, as i recognize it is hard to get to that level) and a dark academia vibe to the whole thing, together with this gossip girl scenario the tasks bring to the story。 it would have been awesome。the novel ended up as a romcom when it could've been so much more。 "the tasks escalate from petty scandals to actual crimes" ?????????????? how crazy would it have been if alice was asked to kill someone? or to plan a heist? and if we find out a dark side to the perfect character that is henry? maybe if liang had explored more of his trauma, i don't know。。。 it would have been very interesting。i also felt like most of alice's friendships were superficial。 of course, i love chani!!! such a cute character。 but she could have developed a bond with raine as well, or with vanessa, etc。 it seems like she did realize that they were good people but didn't put effort into developing a friendship because she was too focused on completing the tasks, but the book could have been longer and the author could have spent more time working on these characters。she also could have explored more how tired alice was because of the academic expectations she had on herself, instead of just pointing that out as a fact and ending the chapter there。 if this had been more developed, i do believe that many overachieving readers would have related more to her - to a point that she might have become a standard like "oh she's just like us that alice sun"。 but since her tiredness was just mentioned a couple of times, it didn't seem important enough。 for god's sake, the girl was sleeping one hour per night!!!!!!!!!!!!! how didn't that become a plot? how didn't that exhaust her? not to mention her powers - how did that even happen? how do most characters just brush through that and continue living their lives, instead of trying to understand it scientifically? (also disappointed with the professor and henry! both were so interested in science and just decided to ignore that。 ASIDE from that, though, the book was good。 enjoyable。 fun。 i just wish it was better developed because it literally had such an interesting premise- 。。。more

Rating: 3。5 StarsIt was definitely very YA, the writing especially, it was written very very casually to the point I was shocked in the beginning。 Didn't expect djkdejfj it to be so casual。 I got used to it after a while though。 Next, you could Tell it was a debut novel。 Just, some things very unpolished。 For example, a lot of the times the book talks about food and uses mandarin to show that "hey we're in China。 This is Chinese culture。 Look" which would work, except as a reader you have no ide Rating: 3。5 StarsIt was definitely very YA, the writing especially, it was written very very casually to the point I was shocked in the beginning。 Didn't expect djkdejfj it to be so casual。 I got used to it after a while though。 Next, you could Tell it was a debut novel。 Just, some things very unpolished。 For example, a lot of the times the book talks about food and uses mandarin to show that "hey we're in China。 This is Chinese culture。 Look" which would work, except as a reader you have no idea what these random mandarin words mean and you aren't told the meaning either, ever。 The male love interest was soooooo two dimensional。 He was a very typical character, like dark hair, rich, British accent, has a smug mask but is an observant soft boy inside。 The attempts to make him have depth felt very mechanical like "this is the chapter where you get to know that his dad was terrible :/" I was SO shocked about the mc and the girl she ended up befriending。 Because like why would you tell a random person that you ?? Can turn invisible like ?? I was just thinking WOW she is SUCH a pabo!!! but I soon realised that author would take it to friends route instead of backstabbing route but once again, it didn't feel natural it felt very much like the author was dragging the story in that directionThe best part of this book for me was definitely the fact that I related to Alice's struggles a lot I was sobbing during some parts but that could also just be me being yakkan emotionally unstable the past few days。The familial relationships are definitely the heart of this book and I think those are written very well。I also liked how when all shit hits the fan it really felt like there was no way out, I remembered thinking I have no idea how the author will pull us out of this。 That was very good。Just, the family vibes and Alice's internal struggles, very good。No other character gets development because they didn't get enough dimension to even need to develop, the book was about Alice and her struggles only。 。。。more

I don’t want to give anything away about the end, so I’ll just say that I enjoyed how the author handled the magical ability from beginning to end。 I can see why some may not like the conclusion, but I was very pleased that the author went the way she did。✏️ The social life of the protagonist。 I enjoyed her social journey as she calls out others for their privileged behaviors but also realizes that many of the assumptions she has had about some of her peers were not completely accurate。Things I wished:🖊️ I did wish there was a bit more in the wrap-up。 It felt very quick compared to the rest of the book, and I would have loved a bit more to the ending。Overall I quite enjoyed this book。 It was light and fun for the most part, with some great depth I wasn’t necessarily expecting。 I’ve been feeling a bit “over” YA lately, but I had a fun time with this debut and would gladly read the author’s next book! Thanks so much to Netgalley and Inkyard Press for the advanced readers copy! 。。。more

Secrets, I’m realizing, are their own kind of currency。 what a fun read!! I really flew through this book; the story was so engaging and paced just right。 while topics regarding inequality, class, and privilege were delved into, the author managed to weave those issues into an entertaining story with likable main characters that you just can’t help but root for, or at the very least, sympathize with。 alice and henry are great individually but even greater as a couple, and the academic rivals Secrets, I’m realizing, are their own kind of currency。 what a fun read!! I’ve never written a review on here, but after reading this book I knew I had to。 This book was incredible, I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it from the first page to the last。 Like the main character Alice, I also feel an overwhelming need to have academic success。 In the book, Alice says “If I’m not swimming as hard as I can, feet thrashing at the waves, I’m drowning” I have said something very similar these last few years。 I will often admit how school is making me feel as though I’m drow I’ve never written a review on here, but after reading this book I knew I had to。 This book was incredible, I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it from the first page to the last。 Like the main character Alice, I also feel an overwhelming need to have academic success。 In the book, Alice says “If I’m not swimming as hard as I can, feet thrashing at the waves, I’m drowning” I have said something very similar these last few years。 I will often admit how school is making me feel as though I’m drowning。 This sentence from the book so perfectly encapsulated the feeling of being so overwhelmed with schooling, but being unable to do anything about it except fight to stay afloat。 Reading a book where the main character is feeling the same things I feel and doing the same things I do (in her studies, not in everything else in the story haha!), made me feel so seen。 It’s honestly even more than this, the fact that the author understands this enough to accurately be able to display Alice’s emotions just made me feel so validated。 This story portrayed Alice’s emotions very well and her contradicting feelings between wanting and needing that academic success to also wanting and needing to feel peace。 It’s a constant mental fight between that overwhelming fear of failure and the desire to just be happy。 I loved the way her inner battle was portrayed and this story was very well done。 I absolutely loved this book, and the story and characters touched my heart。 It has definitely become one of my favorites。 。。。more

Alice Sun is a gifted, top-of-the-school, honor-roll student at an elite international high school at Beijing called Airington which is bustling with the privileged sons and daughters of the most famous singers, models, CEOs, diplomats, yada yada。 But Alice is secretly a broke b who is a nerd and studyholic who cares a lot ab what ppl think of her bc shes jealous of everyone else's privilege (imposter syndrome???)。 and anyways one day she learns she can become INVISIBLE (just like how she feels) temporarily and without control over it so she seeks the help of this kid named Henry Li who is this effortlessly hot, smart, rich kid golden child of the school AKA her academic rival and basically stuff leads to other stuff (no spoilres) and bc of her invisibility she and Henry uncover the scandalous stuff behind rich ppl at her school together!!First of all, SLAYY! Last (school) year, all the new YA books I read were just disappointing so I had pretty low expectations, but maybe it was just cuz of those low preset standards or my mood or idk the vibes or the day of the week or my new rainbow book tabs or the Chinese couple or the way my phone was dead when i woke up and i had school and i just happened to have this book in my backpack or something but I WAS LIVING FOR THISS!!! For a debut YA, this was well written! 🎧 3。5 ⭐️ Rounded up as it is a debut。 I liked this book more than I thought I would as it is YA。 I know, why did I pick it up? IDK 🤷🏻‍♀️ It was a fun read, and it had some biting social commentary。 The academic rival/enemies to teenage romance was actually sweet and not as cringy as usual for me。 Close, but I think the main characters had enough going on outside each other that the angst was spread around and not hyperfocused。 I enjoyed the writing, the humor, and the narration of the audiobook。 🎧 3。5 ⭐️ Rounded up as it is a debut。 I liked this book more than I thought I would as it is YA。 I know, why did I pick it up? There are two kinds of people in this world: 1。 people that believe private schools are the best2。 and people who don't (it probably depends on the country though)Let's face it, Alice feared that without Airington, she would have nothing。 She had no hobbies, no friends, she never saw her parents, and felt terrible about the enormous cost of her education。 I feel like the only reason she wanted to stay at that particular school is because it would have secured a spot in an Ivy league school。 Yet There are two kinds of people in this world: 1。 people that believe private schools are the best2。 and people who don't (it probably depends on the country though)Let's face it, Alice feared that without Airington, she would have nothing。 She had no hobbies, no friends, she never saw her parents, and felt terrible about the enormous cost of her education。 I feel like the only reason she wanted to stay at that particular school is because it would have secured a spot in an Ivy league school。 Yet she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life after graduation。 Yeah she was young, so? Ivy league isn't everything? Is it unfair that everyone can't get the same education? Yes。 I just think she could have done things differently, since she was soo smart。 Same thing for Henry。 You are so smart, why can't you use your braininess。Sometimes I forget modern pop culture references exist。 Although I have nothing specifically against them, I don't want to see the same ones all the time。 It makes me cringe too much。I think I missed the big picture of the book。 Kidnapping is bad? Money can solve everything? Studying is everything? + I still don't really get the invisibility thing? I did like the aunt。 Everyone likes an unconventional relative。I guess I could go on and on about this one, but just maybe this book wasn't for me or I am reading too much into it。 。。。more
