Summary

The phenomenal bestselling self-help book of its generation - for spiritual followers of the Dalai Lama and Deepak Chopra。 Eckhart Tolle demonstrates how to live a healthier and happier life by living in the present moment。 To make the journey into The Power of Now we will need to leave our analytical mind and its false created self, the ego, behind。 Although the journey is challenging, Eckhart Tolle offers simple language and a question and answer format to guide us。 Surrender to the present moment, where problems do not exist。 It is here we find our joy, are able to embrace our true selves and discover that we are already complete and perfect。 If we are able to be fully present and take each step in the Now we will be opening ourselves to the transforming experience of THE POWER OF NOW。 It's a book to be revisited again and again。

I really enjoyed reading this book! At first I found it a bit tough to digest - however I ended up loving it and the lessons within。 One step closer to living in the now。

Wonderful book, I read it twice, one time with audio book read by the author。 Peaceful voice and content was very meaningful to me。 A good book to revisit at least yearly。

This was an interesting read, it taught me a lot about living in the present and its significance in daily life and emotions。 The power of the ego is also discussed, but great analogies are used to portray their points。 If actions are taken based on the reading, people will definitely be led into a better future。 I am excited to apply what I learned and hope others give it a quick read as well。 I also found it to be a tad boring in certain situations but you just have to push through it all。

Extremely insightful and makes complete sense!!!

Not perfect, but still one of the most important books I have read。 If you are willing to go into it with an open mind and to sincerely follow the advice given, it will guide you to a kinder, calmer way of living。 It's generally well written, although some might find the tilt towards Christian references off-putting。 Tolle does however make it clear that his writings are not intended for any one particular faith system, so I suspect it's caused by a tendency to reach for the expressions most fam Not perfect, but still one of the most important books I have read。 If you are willing to go into it with an open mind and to sincerely follow the advice given, it will guide you to a kinder, calmer way of living。 It's generally well written, although some might find the tilt towards Christian references off-putting。 Tolle does however make it clear that his writings are not intended for any one particular faith system, so I suspect it's caused by a tendency to reach for the expressions most familiar to him。"The Power of Now" is far from the first book on the subject, but it breaks down the concept of mindful living in a way that can be easily understood and lays a foundation for further reflection。 。。。more

I picked this book up based on recommendation from ppl I follow online who said it “changed their lives”。 Unfortunately, I didn’t have the same experience。 Granted, there are a few points I resonate with but the majority of the book rubbed me the wrong way。 I was also only able to finish it on my second go bc the first time I stopped reading after page 24。 My problems were (and still are) that: Tolle’s tone is incredibly patronising and condescending。 This only reinforces the “you plebs know not I picked this book up based on recommendation from ppl I follow online who said it “changed their lives”。 Unfortunately, I didn’t have the same experience。 Granted, there are a few points I resonate with but the majority of the book rubbed me the wrong way。 I was also only able to finish it on my second go bc the first time I stopped reading after page 24。 My problems were (and still are) that: Tolle’s tone is incredibly patronising and condescending。 This only reinforces the “you plebs know nothing” stigma I have about spiritual teachers and surely wouldn’t help the learning process (if there was one)。 He also denies the existence of pain/ claims that everyone creates their own pain which is just ~a treat~。 Lastly, he basically repeats himself over and over again on this 191 page long book。 It should have ended way sooner, seeing as his messages and ideas don’t really improve after chapter one。All in all, I would recommend this book if you want to have a white cis male (with an inflated sense of self and ego) mansplain how to live your life。 。。。more

I was excited to read this book。 The title was perfect and the content gets points。 But the construction was poor。 The Q & A weren't very helpful as the questions posted weren't always great to begin with (more than 40-50%) and some of the answers were off-ish。 There were several good/great points, but there was a lot of dragging。 Tone was off too, quite judgemental。 Spiritual books are fun sometimes。 And I got, living in the present is very important part。 Decent read。 3/5! I did not expect this book to have this much of an impact on me。 But it did and I’m so happy I discovered this gem of wisdom。 For anyone looking for practical insights on truly being present in the now, but also, accepting things as they are , this would be a good place to start。

I enjoyed this book and feel that given the current COVID lockdown, it’s a great time to read it to remember to be in the present moment。 How I definitely feel A New Earth is a better book overall。 The Power of Now made a similar similar bias as Jordan Peterson does in 12 Rules for Life, where he overindexes on Christianity, and references / quotes as if there is a shortage of other main religions preaching the same principles。 I also found Chapter 8 slightly problematic and think the book would I enjoyed this book and feel that given the current COVID lockdown, it’s a great time to read it to remember to be in the present moment。 How I definitely feel A New Earth is a better book overall。 The Power of Now made a similar similar bias as Jordan Peterson does in 12 Rules for Life, where he overindexes on Christianity, and references / quotes as if there is a shortage of other main religions preaching the same principles。 I also found Chapter 8 slightly problematic and think the book would have been improved if it was simply removed。 Primarily the lack of acknowledgment of the LGBTQ+ community, and abusive relationships。 Taken at face value, chapter 8 can be seen as ‘you are never completely whole without the combining of a man and a woman, you will always be yearning as you are missing your other half’。 The paragraph he threw in about being gay does not even out this argument。 Then in terms of domestic abuse, in the last chapter he remedies this problematic narrative that you can just stick anything out as long as you are conscious, and you can choose to leave, but this should have been brought forward in chapter 8 when he discussed relationships。 A stronger emphasis on agency and taking action would have been appreciated。 All in all I still feel it is an important read。 。。。more

It feels amazing to be able to experience this book but I know for a fact that I might need to re-read it again probably next year as there are some points that I wasn’t able to grasp with my whole intellectual power。

There are some ideas in here about time and mindfulness that really resonate and that I have continuously thought about since starting the book。 That said, this book is bad。

Cambiando un poco el genero literario por que los libros no solo entretienen y educan, también nos conducen a expandir nuestra percepción de la existencia。

Reading this book felt like a meditation in a sense, hundred percent recommend。 I do think though, that all the information, inspiration and knowledge I could absorb, I did so in the first 100-150 pages and the rest just seemed to be repeating itself in a sense。

I don't think that I am at a place in my life that this book means as much as it could have years ago。 When I was in a bad head space, I can see how this way of thinking could be beneficial and help process those dark emotions。 I read this book for a book club I am a part of at work, so I viewed my reading while in my professional mindset。 I don't think that this book was absorbed in the same manner as if I had chosen to read it on my own。 I had a hard time reading this book, it was very difficu I don't think that I am at a place in my life that this book means as much as it could have years ago。 When I was in a bad head space, I can see how this way of thinking could be beneficial and help process those dark emotions。 I read this book for a book club I am a part of at work, so I viewed my reading while in my professional mindset。 I don't think that this book was absorbed in the same manner as if I had chosen to read it on my own。 I had a hard time reading this book, it was very difficult for me to get started。 I finally got the audio book and this helped me a great deal。 But the narration and cadence were very mellow and caused me to relax so much so that I had a hard time staying awake。 I will definitely try to read this book again when I am feeling lost in negative head space。 。。。more

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this book before I started reading it, but I was pleasantly surprised。 In essence, The Power of Now takes the experiential spiritual-mystical core of both Eastern and Western religions and re-packages it in a syncretic New Age style。 This book is concerned with interfacing with a spiritual universal - here typified as the power of Now - which Christianity might understand as living in Christ, or living in constant prayer, and which might be understood in Hi I wasn't sure that I was going to like this book before I started reading it, but I was pleasantly surprised。 In essence, The Power of Now takes the experiential spiritual-mystical core of both Eastern and Western religions and re-packages it in a syncretic New Age style。 This book is concerned with interfacing with a spiritual universal - here typified as the power of Now - which Christianity might understand as living in Christ, or living in constant prayer, and which might be understood in Hindu traditions as one of various conceptions of moksha。 At their core these experiences are either non-being, or being within an infinite other。 The practical emotional experience in either understanding is the same: liberation, joy, release, etc。And Tolle does explain this concept in a basically non-troubling way。 A lot of religious groups employ access to spiritual experience as a kind of advertising, or as a 'proof' of their group's supposed universal truth。 Be free of suffering - join our church! Join our temple! Follow our guru! And so forth。 Tolle doesn't really employ it in that manner。 Instead, he says: this is the experience, this is how to access it - do with this what you will。 I think this has a lot to do with why he has become so popular。 This book presents an essentially secular form of spirituality。Spiritual experience is not nonsense。 Whether you believe in a higher power or not, spiritual experience exists - because people have experienced it, do experience it and presumably always will。 Whether you believe it can be explained through psychology, or that it can only be explained by the teachings of xyz religion or xyz guru, is another matter entirely。 The fact of the matter is that an experience exists which is accessible to everyone - be it through fasting, through prayer, through meditation, or through whatever other method - and various responses to these experiences exist。 The Power of Now takes the fundamentals of various teachings on this subject and reimagines them in the style of an American self-help book, along the lines of To Win Friends and Influence People。 That said, I do think many of the criticisms of this book are basically fair。 For example, the book is longer than it needs to be, and this leads to a lot of repetition。 You will have encoutered most of what this book has to say within the first ~25% of its length。 A lot of people seem to find Tolle's style condescending。 I didn't have that experience, but I understand many people might be uncomfortable with it。 It's certainly not the tone that we usually expect from non-fiction books, and it does try to be somewhat chatty with the reader。 But this is both good and bad。 I know a lot of people dislike this tone, but I don't think The Power of Now would be nearly so successful without it。 I think this book is to a large extent targeted at people who read relatively few books - particularly relatively few non-fiction books - and I imagine this style has helped a lot of people to more easily connect with what the author has to say。I think a more significant issue exists with Tolle's preferred method of expressing many spiritual concepts。 He readily employs terminology like 'energy field' and 'high vibrational frequency'。 Of course, using these terms in this way is scientifically nonsense。 Spiritual language is constantly evolving and I think use of these terms do date a text。 But it is worth noting that they do essentially represent a re-expression of older ideas。 There is other spiritual language which could have been used to describe the same phenomena。 The real problem with these terms is that they confuse spiritual and scientific communication, making anyone who only understands their scientific meaning want to throw the book at a wall。 I think it's worth trying to conceive of them as totally different words - they do describe entirely different concepts, and definitely belong to a specific time and a place of spiritual communication (1990s-2010s)。 No doubt one day in the future somebody will write a guide to largely the same spiritual ideas, and I'm quite sure that they will use whatever terminology is present to that time and place。 Hopefully whatever terms they use will lead to less confusion as to exactly what the author is trying to communicate (ie。 not a scientific hypothesis, but rather a spiritual one)。 。。。more
