Summary

Somewhere deep inside, you know what your gift, purpose, and mission are。 Boyd Varty, a lion tracker and life coach, reveals how the wisdom from the ancient art of tracking can teach you how to recognize these essential ingredients in a meaningful life。

Know how to navigate, don’t worry about the destination, and stay alert。 These are just a few of the strategies that contribute to both successful lion tracking and a life of fulfillment。 When we join Boyd Varty and his two friends tracking lions, we are immersed in the South African bush, and, although we learn some of the skills required for actual tracking, the takeaways are the strategies that can be applied to our everyday lives。 Trackers learn how to use all of their senses to read the environment and enter into a state of “greater aliveness。” When we learn to find and follow our inner tracks, we learn to see what is deeply important to us。 In the same way the trip in the classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was a vehicle to examine how to live out our values, the story of this one-day adventure—with danger and suspense along the way—uses the ancient art of tracking to convey profound lessons on how to live a purposeful, meaningful life of greater harmony。

Nothing special。 Interesting。 Relatively brief read。 I wouldn’t recommend it。

Never thought I would find a book about safaris and wildlife sanctuaries and animals so exciting and so full of wisdom。 Boyd Varty's writing on tracker life and his fascination with lions and leopards convinced me that a South African safari is something to be experienced once。 Never thought I would find a book about safaris and wildlife sanctuaries and animals so exciting and so full of wisdom。 Boyd Varty's writing on tracker life and his fascination with lions and leopards convinced me that a South African safari is something to be experienced once。 。。。more

Everyone should read this book

Wonderful book。 Definitely better to listen to, as the author reads it and does the animal calls himself。

It’s a little book, read it! Wouldn’t it be great if everyone could go tracking once in their life。

Elena Berry

Eloquent, graceful, comforting。 A quick read。 “I don’t know where I’m going, but I know how to get there。” The audiobook version is completely captivating。 Would be great for teens or any adults trying to find their way。

I originally heard Varty on a podcast promoting this book。 The interview cracked me up but his other book, Cathedral of the Wild, was far more engrossing than this。

This book really surprised me。 I heard an interview w/ the author on Tim Ferris' podcast & he was a brilliant raconteur。 Ordinarily, I would not have picked up a book on lion tracking。。。 so glad I did。 It made me look at the process of tracking with great appreciation。 It also led my husband & I to "track" footprints on the beach during our holiday。 Also love the idea of people tracking their inner lives。 Lots of good stuff。 This book really surprised me。 I heard an interview w/ the author on Tim Ferris' podcast & he was a brilliant raconteur。 Ordinarily, I would not have picked up a book on lion tracking。。。 so glad I did。 It made me look at the process of tracking with great appreciation。 It also led my husband & I to "track" footprints on the beach during our holiday。 Also love the idea of people tracking their inner lives。 Lots of good stuff。 。。。more

Interesting story that prompts you to think hard about the intentionality of where you are going and how you might get there。 Quick read I picked up since it was a school summer reading book。

I listened to this book in a day while working in my yard。 I so wish I had a physical copy, though, bc there were several profound nuggets of gold he dropped in this book—a guide to being fully alive sort of book。 This resonated deeply with my own way of walking through life, the way I’ve been “led” by serendipity, by “tracking,” by allowing the “wild” in me have its place in my decisions。 I want to find some more prominent quotes to add here。

Read this one for short book book club。 While I didn't hate it, I found it a bit monotonous。 The tracking was interesting, the self help was surface level at best。 Read this one for short book book club。 While I didn't hate it, I found it a bit monotonous。 The tracking was interesting, the self help was surface level at best。 。。。more

An inspiring and illuminating book on how to attune to nature and simultaneously our selves。 A skill and trait that is within all of us dating back thousands of years yet one that has been unfortunately deprioritized in today’s comfortable modern age。

For a short book, 160 pages, it packs a punch。 The tracking of a lion is fascinating。 I read this book because my son-in-law who is from Africa told me that the wild of the continent is in his blood and he hasn’t found that feeling anywhere else。 The best description of this feeling is from a wild animal tracker。 The author relates the wild and nature to life messages。 This will be personal to each individual reader。 However there are some good takeaway messages for anyone。

Really good book。 I liked the imagery used when describing the African landscape。 Author intertwined short stories with overall theme。 Will read again at a later date

This quote says it all! “Step off the superhighway of modern life and go quietly onto your own track。 Go to a new trail where you can hear the whisper of your wild self in the echoes of the forest。 Find the trail of something wild and dangerous and worthy of your fear and joy and focus。 Live deeply on your own inner guidance。 There is nothing more healing than finding your gifts and sharing them。”Such a moving recounting of a day in the life of the author tracking with his fellow trackers, with This quote says it all! “Step off the superhighway of modern life and go quietly onto your own track。 Go to a new trail where you can hear the whisper of your wild self in the echoes of the forest。 Find the trail of something wild and dangerous and worthy of your fear and joy and focus。 Live deeply on your own inner guidance。 There is nothing more healing than finding your gifts and sharing them。”Such a moving recounting of a day in the life of the author tracking with his fellow trackers, with illustrations and life lessons woven into the day’s adventure! 。。。more

A quick and interesting read!I didn't know anything about tracking before reading this and listening to Boyd Varty's interview on The Tim Ferriss Show, so this was eye-opening。The overarching narrative follows one of Varty's lion tracking experiences。 He also seamlessly weaves in other stories from his life, a deep appreciation of nature and Shangaan culture, and life lessons he's learned from tracking。 Here's three of my favorite quotes:- 'I don't know where I'm going but I know exactly how to A quick and interesting read!I didn't know anything about tracking before reading this and listening to Boyd Varty's interview on The Tim Ferriss Show, so this was eye-opening。The overarching narrative follows one of Varty's lion tracking experiences。 He also seamlessly weaves in other stories from his life, a deep appreciation of nature and Shangaan culture, and life lessons he's learned from tracking。 Here's three of my favorite quotes:- 'I don't know where I'm going but I know exactly how to get there。'- 'The path of not here is part of the path of here。'- 'I give up the importance of my life to instead become a part of life。'My only reason for not rating it higher is that it didn't particularly resonate with me, which is a completely personal issue! 。。。more

Sometimes this feels like an extended advertisement for the author’s safari tour business…but it’s still a great story, and a great extended meditation on the nature of life and the life of nature in Africa。

A beautiful short book on how to start looking at one’s life to find one’s true path。 I plan to let it settle in my mind and then reread it。

Beautifully written with a lot of stories that pull you in and engage your senses to be there with the protagonist in that natural environment。 I really enjoyed the stories more than the life advice in this book, not because the advice was bad but because the way the author described how the trackers tracked and how they read their environment was more interesting to me。One thing I found it hard to buy from the book is how we should go about life the way a tracker goes about tracking a wild anim Beautifully written with a lot of stories that pull you in and engage your senses to be there with the protagonist in that natural environment。 I really enjoyed the stories more than the life advice in this book, not because the advice was bad but because the way the author described how the trackers tracked and how they read their environment was more interesting to me。One thing I found it hard to buy from the book is how we should go about life the way a tracker goes about tracking a wild animal。 That analogy seemed to me like a reactive mindset to something "else" that's driving our lives, which is posited as more wild, more natural and generally "better"。 While I think a person's life-track can be nonlinear and people can change paths and shift gears, I still subscribe to the analogy of the captain of the ship at sea more than the tracker tracking their metaphysical wilder self at play。 The captain looks forward and forge a path, rides the wave and wrestles with storms, no small feat with a lot of lessons to navigate life, even when it gets stormy。All in all, a great book and I highly recommend it。 。。。more

Brilliant and profound—perfect for anyone, but especially those wounded inside or out (which is basically all of us)。 Boyd is also skilled in the art of brevity。 Lovely book。
