Summary

All sorcerers are evil。 Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything。 Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains。 If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather。 She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power。

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire。 Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital。 With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy。 Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them。

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself。 For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined。

A three star read, but a solid one!I almost dnfed this book at the beginning because of Elisabeth’s aggravating characterisation。 I understood the idea behind her naïveté but I think it wasn’t executed too well and missed the mark, making her look stupid instead which in turn was annoying to read。She got her intended character development starting around and 20% in and it made for a much more pleasant experience。 I personally really liked the world and wouldn’t have minded an even heavier world- A three star read, but a solid one!I almost dnfed this book at the beginning because of Elisabeth’s aggravating characterisation。 I understood the idea behind her naïveté but I think it wasn’t executed too well and missed the mark, making her look stupid instead which in turn was annoying to read。She got her intended character development starting around and 20% in and it made for a much more pleasant experience。 I personally really liked the world and wouldn’t have minded an even heavier world-building, plot-focused book。The romance didn’t do anything for me but I also didn’t mind it。 Their growing relationship worked fine and was believable。 I think they could’ve easily also been friends。 I don’t believe the romance was necessary per se。 (As opposed to “an enchantment of ravens” where that WAS the plot)。I like Roberson’s writing and the stories are very easy to digest。 I’m glad I didn’t give up early in and am glad to finally strike this from my tbr backlist! 。。。more

My new favorite author! LOVED this!

I stopped reading when there were only 50 pages left。 This book would have really benefitted from being part of a series。 I like the main trio they were great but the villain was comically evil which made all the tension obsolete。 Whitty banter and great characters can't carry a book all on its own。 I stopped reading when there were only 50 pages left。 This book would have really benefitted from being part of a series。 I like the main trio they were great but the villain was comically evil which made all the tension obsolete。 Whitty banter and great characters can't carry a book all on its own。 。。。more

This book is the exact type of book that made me fall in love with reading。 Elizabeth’s naivety did grate a bit in the beginning, but it made sense in lines of the message the author was trying to get across (which I personally feel was a bit heavy handed)。 However, all of the action + wonderful characters = a winner for me :)

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I heard a lot of good things about it and was truly excited to read it but it ended up just being kinda boring。 The only part that really made me feel sad or interested was the ending when Silas saved them, other than that it was just a bit dull to me。

Feral librarians and books that are alive? Yes please! Elisabeth has spent her whole life the Great Library and hopes to be a warden someday。 She has been taught to believe that magic and sorcerers are evil。 One event unravels everything she knows and believes in。 Enter Nathaniel, moody and tragic sorcerer。 I enjoyed the library elements, the changes the main characters made, and I also loved sweet Silas, a high demon。 Some elements of danger and torture, a few mild swears, and a romance scene。 Feral librarians and books that are alive?

3。8/5 (Silas’s back must hurt from carrying the whole book)omg it took me so long to finish this because of school and everything, but I’m finally done!!!okay so not gonna lie the beginning of the book was extremely generic and the writing style kind of made me cringe (I probably would’ve enjoyed this more if I was younger)。 Also, one thing that irritated me was that all the obstacles that Elisabeth had to face were overcome wayyy too easily。 Like there would be one sentence talking about a new 3。8/5 (Silas’s back must hurt from carrying the whole book)omg it took me so long to finish this because of school and everything, but I’m finally done!!!okay so not gonna lie the beginning of the book was extremely generic and the writing style kind of made me cringe (I probably would’ve enjoyed this more if I was younger)。 Also, one thing that irritated me was that all the obstacles that Elisabeth had to face were overcome wayyy too easily。 Like there would be one sentence talking about a new “challenge” she had to overcome, but then by the next page the problem would already be solved。 In that sense, the book was a bit too fast paced and it didn’t give the story time to develop well。 the villain of the story was extremely childish, it reminded me of a cartoon for kids or something。 however, the story definitely gets better in the second half of the book; we see some nice plot twists, and relationships between characters start forming。 (I love love love the friendship between Silas and Nathaniel <33) Overall I didn’t really feel attached to any of the characters or their journey, and I was a bit disappointed considering how much hype this book gets on booktok, but I would def recommend this to younger audiences who enjoy simpler plots 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I really loved the writing of this book and the story, but I needed more。 Hardly any of the characters were well fleshed-out which made the romance (especially) unbelievable and odd。 This may be the only time I’ll say this, but I wish this was a duology so characters could be fleshed out more and questions that still remained could be answered。

DNF page 122。I'll dnf this for now, I just don't find myself wanting to pick this up any longer。 The plot isn't doing it for me so far and I don't like the main character 。。 but I definitely want to give this book another go at some other point in time。 It just isn't doing it for me right now and I don't want to feel guilty any longer for not continuing this。 DNF page 122。I'll dnf this for now, I just don't find myself wanting to pick this up any longer。 The plot isn't doing it for me so far and I don't like the main character 。。 but I definitely want to give this book another go at some other point in time。 It just isn't doing it for me right now and I don't want to feel guilty any longer for not continuing this。 。。。more

4。5 stars // read October 2022 general thoughts: -the writing is so smooth! not too sparse, not too flowery, just descriptive enough to really add to the story。 -the relationships!! I adored Nathaniel and Elisabeth’s dynamic, and the platonic relationships were awesome too。 I appreciated that the individual characters didn’t fall into stereotypes and actually made logical decisions。 (Yay!) Also, there’s not a lot of romantic drama, which was honestly a breath of fresh air。 -the world building!! 4。5 stars // read October 2022 general thoughts: -the writing is so smooth! not too sparse, not too flowery, just descriptive enough to really add to the story。 -the relationships!! Also, there’s not a lot of romantic drama, which was honestly a breath of fresh air。 -the world building!!! 🥰 I love how much thought was put into how everything worked, and how the different books had unique personalities。 suggested reads based on elements in A Sorcery of Thorns! if you like:-Magical books and libraries… Entranced (Prince of the Doomed City #1) by Sylvia Mercedes and Life Reader, K。M。 Shea-Silas… the City Between series by W。R。 Gingell (maybe it’s just me, but Silas gives me serious Athelas vibes) -charismatic sorcerer is bonded to demon… Howl’s Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones content concerns: This is the part that I’d like to just ignore so I could recommend this book without hesitation。 However, there are some problematic elements。The most obvious one is: yes, magic is dependent on demons。 The demons here bear little resemblance to the Biblical entities- they are shown to be powerful and evil/apathetic towards humans in general (yet still capable of doing good。) A demon is summoned multiple times during the book, and sorcerers must use their blood to summon and ultimately bargain with them for power。Secondly, there’s a brief kissing scene that goes farther than kissing (I skipped it), and it’s briefly mentioned that a main character is bisexual。 One or two mild swear words are mentioned。 Violence and some brief creepy stuff is present。 Honestly, I do think that the content here is significantly less than what is in the majority of mainstream YA books; however, it’s still present。 So… I’m not going to give this book a blanket recommendation and say that everyone should read it, because everyone has different levels of what is acceptable to them。 Hopefully this review is helpful in letting you know if you’d enjoy the book or not。 I enjoyed “A Sorcery of Thorns” as a whole, and I hope you do too。 ☺️ 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Where to begin? I had really high hopes for this one。 There were a couple of things in this book that I did actually like。 I agree with the overall consensus that Silas is without a doubt the best character in the whole book。 I enjoyed Nathaniel's sense of humor as well。 I would've loved more of both Silas and Nathaniel throughout。 That's about all I enjoyed though。 I found all aspects of the grimoires to be childish。 I imagined them as a cross between The Monster Book of Monsters book in Harry Where to begin? Am I the issue? So instead of putting down another book that I was over halfway through, I decided to persevere。 I was ready to pull my hair out for the last 100 pages。 I forced my way through those last pages in one night because I couldn't bear the thought of having to wake up another day still reading this one。 This is a prime example of not every book is for everyone。 If you loved it, I tip my imaginary hat to you and say, "To each their own。" xo, Cortney LeighUpdate: I give up, I can't get through the last 50 pages。 。。。more

Writing a review several months after having read this, I can’t help but give it a 5。 I’m sure a more realistic number would be a 4, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story。 It is my favorite Margaret Rogerson novel, although Vespertine is a close second。 5 stars is because I will undoubtedly re-read it, I would recommend it to others, and I would keep this on my shelf。 Is it a classic literary masterpiece? No。 But it is a solid YA fantasy pick with delightful characters and a very likable romance。 Writing a review several months after having read this, I can’t help but give it a 5。 I’m sure a more realistic number would be a 4, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story。 It is my favorite Margaret Rogerson novel, although Vespertine is a close second。 5 stars is because I will undoubtedly re-read it, I would recommend it to others, and I would keep this on my shelf。 Is it a classic literary masterpiece? No。 But it is a solid YA fantasy pick with delightful characters and a very likable romance。 Silas was wonderfully written; I was quite surprised to find that after finishing the novel, he solidly fits at the top of my list of favorite fictionalized characters。 No character has claimed that with just one book (and I have very few characters on my list)。 I was not expecting anything other than a short and enjoyable YA fantasy read, but Margaret Rogerson’s writing style is enchanting and her character development solid (you can see the growth from An Enchantment of Ravens to now)。 Though in order to be considered YA fantasy there is a certain beginning age restriction to the characters, I felt Elisabeth and Nathaniel should have been solidly in their mid- to late-twenties。 Their youth was a bit of a discredit to them。 Their love… too fresh for that young an age, which again, only contributes to Rogerson’s writing style。 She wrote characters more maturely developed than that of typical YA fantasy love stories。 It was not blind, sappy, or desperate enough for typical YA young lovers。 I applaud their maturity but wish it wasn’t given in the sense of being too mature for their age。 I would have rather had their ages increased for believability and a better fit。 The ending。 That ending。 That very last scene。 I love the “not telling” that allows a reader’s imagination to continue to story; you can guess, but you simply can’t know。 There is a great storytelling mastery to that。 I’m a little rebuffed that there is to be a sequel。 Would I enjoy a continuation of their story? Perhaps。 But not at the expense of a solid first ending。 。。。more
