Summary

The Egyptian Books of the Dead is unquestionably one of the most influential books in all of history。 Embodying a ritual to be performed for the dead, with detailed instructions for the behavior of the disembodied spirit in the Land of the Gods, it served as the most important repository of religious authority for some three thousand years。 Chapters were carved on the pyramids of the ancient 5th Dynasty, texts were written in papyrus, and selections were painted on mummy cases well into the Christian Era。 In a certain sense it stood behind all Egyptian civilization。

In the year 1888 Dr。 E。 Wallis Budge, then purchasing agent for the British Museum, followed rumors he heard of a spectacular archaeological find in Upper Egypt, and found in an 18th Dynasty tomb near Luxor "the largest roll of papyrus I had ever seen, tied with a thick band of papyrus, and in a perfect state of preservation。" It was a copy of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, written around 1500 B。C。 for Ani, Royal Scribe of Thebes, Overseer of the Granaries of the Lords of Abydos, and Scribe of the Offerings of the Lords of Thebes。

The Papyrus of Ani, a full version of the Theban recension, is presented here by Dr。 Budge, who later became perhaps the world's most renowned Egyptologist。 Reproduced in full are a clear copy of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, and interlinear transliteration of their sounds (as reconstructed), a word-for-word translation, and separately a complete smooth translation。 All this is preceded by an introduction of more than 150 pages。 As a result of this multiple apparatus the reader has a unique opportunity to savor all aspects of the Book of the Dead, or as it is otherwise known, the Book of the Great Awakening。

O livro em si é enriquecedor, porém a tradução brasileira tem muitas falhas e faz a leitura entediante。

This was a difficult book to read。 I posted I am finished, but actually I couldn't read any more so I quit early。 Too many gods with multiple names。 Too many ceremonies and chants。The color images were beautiful and the descriptions of them were interesting。 A lot about ancient Egypt still to learn, not only for me but for the scholars。 This was a difficult book to read。 I posted I am finished, but actually I couldn't read any more so I quit early。 Too many gods with multiple names。 Too many ceremonies and chants。The color images were beautiful and the descriptions of them were interesting。 A lot about ancient Egypt still to learn, not only for me but for the scholars。 。。。more

Definitely the best translation available for the Egyptian Book of the Dead; the commentaries and sidenotes are informative and concise, and I like how they are left to the back of the book so as not to muddle up the original texts。 The illustrations of the original plates are beautiful and presented in their original glory, you can see every detail as you read along, sometimes opening up into fold-out pages if the panels are long enough。That being said that doesn't make the source material any Definitely the best translation available for the Egyptian Book of the Dead; the commentaries and sidenotes are informative and concise, and I like how they are left to the back of the book so as not to muddle up the original texts。 The illustrations of the original plates are beautiful and presented in their original glory, you can see every detail as you read along, sometimes opening up into fold-out pages if the panels are long enough。That being said that doesn't make the source material any more understandable, a lot of it sounding like poetic code and riddles, the Egyptian initiatory rites still remaining a mystery to modern Egyptologists, but the reader can still sort of grasp the general idea the Egyptians were getting at。 。。。more

“My heart is with me, and it shall never come to pass that it shall be carried away。 I am the lord of hearts, the slayer of the heart。 I live in right and truth (Maat) and I have my being therein。 I am Horus, the dweller of hearts, who is within the dweller in the body。 I live in my word, and my heart hath being。 Let not my heart be taken away from me, let it not be wounded, and may neither wounds nor gashes be dealt upon me because it hath been taken away from me。 Let me have my being in the bo “My heart is with me, and it shall never come to pass that it shall be carried away。 I am the lord of hearts, the slayer of the heart。 I live in right and truth (Maat) and I have my being therein。 I am Horus, the dweller of hearts, who is within the dweller in the body。 I live in my word, and my heart hath being。 Let not my heart be taken away from me, let it not be wounded, and may neither wounds nor gashes be dealt upon me because it hath been taken away from me。 Let me have my being in the body of [my] father Seb, [and in the body of my] mother Nut。 I have not done that which is held in abomination by the gods; let me not suffer defeat there, [but let me be] triumphant。” (Kapitel 29B)Den egyptiska dödsboken består av en samling religiösa skrifter och formler som är tänkta att hjälpa de avlidna vidare genom eftervärlden。 Bokens rötter sträcker sig ända tillbaka till det Gamla riket i forntida Egypten (ca 2400 f。Kr。), men dåtidens skrifter var enbart reserverade för kungligheter och graverades främst in på väggarna i pyramiderna (aka pyramidtexterna)。 Med tiden kom skrifterna att utvecklas, och under det Nya Riket (ca 1550 f。Kr。) var de så pass allmänt etablerade att vem som helst (med ekonomiska förutsättningar) kunde beställa sin egen individuella bok på papyrusrulle。 Böckerna varierade dock ofta i både längd och kvalitet då man alltid behövde utgå från beställarens personliga förutsättningar。 Idag vet man att det fanns minst 190 olika kapitel man kunde utgå ifrån när man beställde sin bok: varje individ valde således själv vilka formler (kapitel) hon ansåg sig behöva ha med sig under sina prövningar i eftervärlden。 Det är alltså just dessa skrifter som idag går under benämningen Dödsboken eller “de dödas bok” (egyptiska: Ru nu peret em heru)。 Boken placerades alltid nära den avlidnes kropp för att denne skulle kunna bära med sig skriften under sin fortsatta resa i eftervärlden (det var även av stor vikt hur man hanterade den döda kroppen för att detta skulle kunna ske, mycket intressant och värt att kollas upp!!)。 Den avlidnes första prövningar i eftervärlden är av själslig karaktär: själen måste gå igenom “Duat” där demoner och faror väntar。 Om själen klarar sig igenom detta (med hjälp av dödsbokens formler) väntar den sista prövningen i form av Osiris och hans 42 gudomliga domare: här ska den avlidne förneka 42 synder – en för varje domare。 Därefter ska Maat väga den avlidnes hjärta, som behöver vara lättare än en fjäder för att hen ska kunna få gå vidare till efterlivet。 Denna sista prövning skildras även i kapitel 125, och tycks vara en bestående del i alla individuella dödsböcker。 Superspännande och intressant bok, men också fylld av många gåtor och mystik som är halvt ogenomträngligt。 Men oavsett så är det intressant att få ta del av! Tycker även att det är fint hur liv och död hänger ihop så mycket – att de är i ett ständigt samspel med varandra。 För även om verket har fått benämningen “dödsboken” så handlar det minst lika mycket om livet。 Insikten av att liv och död är i en förbindelse skapar tillslut en acceptans kring döden, och gör den mer hanterbar på något vis。 + rekommenderar att spela Assassin’s Creed Origins, där får man liksom hänga i exakt denna tid som dödsboken var central på riktigt (ish)! 。。。more

I don’t wanna discredit the years of effort of translating and combining this book but, I can’t really give this a rating, I personally stopped enjoying it by the 250ish page mark。 Almost 600 pages of translated manuscripts and curses which I’m sure you’d enjoy if you’re interested in Egyptology。

This really isn't a book that I can review。 It's so ancient, so uncanny, so different from everything I'm familiar with in the world of religion, philosophy, and human culture even when I recognize it as something that ultimately led to all of those things。 I'm not going to lie: it got pretty repetitive and technical in places, and I kind of hope there's a less-annotated version somewhere, but there's a pulse that goes through it where its antiquity and the beliefs behind it come through, and th This really isn't a book that I can review。 It's so ancient, so uncanny, so different from everything I'm familiar with in the world of religion, philosophy, and human culture even when I recognize it as something that ultimately led to all of those things。 I'm not going to lie: it got pretty repetitive and technical in places, and I kind of hope there's a less-annotated version somewhere, but there's a pulse that goes through it where its antiquity and the beliefs behind it come through, and that's a peculiar feeling that's worth it for any reader to have。 。。。more
