Summary

God doesn't demand hectic church programs and frenetic schedules; he only wants his people to know him more intimately, says top-selling author D。 A。 Carson。 The apostle Paul found that spiritual closeness in his own fellowship with the Father。 By following Paul's example, we can do the same。 This book calls believers to reject superficiality and revolutionize their lives by embracing a God-guided approach to prayer。

Previously published as A Call to Spiritual Reformation, this book has now been updated to connect more effectively with contemporary readers。 A study guide, DVD, and leader's kit for the book are available through Lifeway and The Gospel Coalition。

I read this with my small group over the last school year。 It was written very clearly and I remember always having a takeaway from each chapter。 The questions at the end of every chapter were helpful for recapping the important points and pushing the readers to make an application to our personal lives。 The main points I remember are that Paul prays a LOT, and in ways that are encouraging, gospel-oriented, urgent, and with eternity in mind。 Would recommend for a group study, or a personal explo I read this with my small group over the last school year。 It was written very clearly and I remember always having a takeaway from each chapter。 The questions at the end of every chapter were helpful for recapping the important points and pushing the readers to make an application to our personal lives。 The main points I remember are that Paul prays a LOT, and in ways that are encouraging, gospel-oriented, urgent, and with eternity in mind。 Would recommend for a group study, or a personal exploration of reasons for prayer。 。。。more

I liked the book。 Carson says it is not intended to be a guide book on how to pray, and indeed, if you knew next to nothing about Christian prayer, this book might not be your starting place。 Nevertheless, the subject of the book, Paul’s prayers, is certainly instructive。 Those of us familiar with our Bibles will find the book helpful in revisiting and refocusing on what Paul is doing and asking as he prays。 His prayers are not in a wholly different league and categorically different from ours!

A very good book on prayer What better source to learn about how to pray than the Bible。 Carson sheds light on the way Paul prayed and guides us in the way we should pray for others。 This book is a great read!

It took me a long time to get through, as I would start it and stop it and then have to restart again as it truly is one I had to take very slow。 My favorite book about prayer I think I have ever read。 Beautiful, convicting, and truly refreshing learning about prayer through the writings of Paul。

Great book, truly spectacular theology - helpful stuff。I give it 4 stars as opposed to 5 partly based on my own reading of it as compared to the book itself - I was not able to give it as much focus as I wanted to。 Probably a better sit-down read rather than an audiobook。 This is not to say I didn't get anything from it, I hope that it will transform, really, the way in which I go about prayer。 Great book, truly spectacular theology - helpful stuff。I give it 4 stars as opposed to 5 partly based on my own reading of it as compared to the book itself - I was not able to give it as much focus as I wanted to。 Probably a better sit-down read rather than an audiobook。 This is not to say I didn't get anything from it, I hope that it will transform, really, the way in which I go about prayer。 。。。more

Absolutely fantastic, challenging and necessary read

I got about halfway through, but found this book isn't really for me。 I accept, of course, the value of scripture as a source for teaching on prayer, but there is more in the Christian tradition than Paul。 There are many other Christian texts from across the centuries which can offer profound insights into this topic。 The need for prayer, as expressed by the author, is undeniable in the modern age。 I got about halfway through, but found this book isn't really for me。 I accept, of course, the value of scripture as a source for teaching on prayer, but there is more in the Christian tradition than Paul。 There are many other Christian texts from across the centuries which can offer profound insights into this topic。 The need for prayer, as expressed by the author, is undeniable in the modern age。 。。。more

A detailed, well thought through book which draws on the letters of Paul to call the church back to taking seriously the disciplined practice of regular prayer。

Excellent book on a subject that is a bit confusing。 The book is very good but I really loved the questions at the end of each chapter。 This REALLY helped the message sink in。 I highly recommend this book。

Really solid。

The content of this book was fantastic。 I'm not a huge fan of this writing style as he tends to repeat the same points a lot for emphasis, but that just makes it a bit of a longer read than it needed to be。 The content of this book was fantastic。 I'm not a huge fan of this writing style as he tends to repeat the same points a lot for emphasis, but that just makes it a bit of a longer read than it needed to be。 。。。more

An excellent book on prayer, particularly on studying the way in which the Apostle Paul prayed。 I like the way Carson writes: easy to read and often asking penetrating questions with keen insights。

Wanted a book on prayer, got a book on Paul's theology of Prayer, which was much more helpful。 Good to highlight the prayers in his letters and further how he has come to pray for the things he is praying for。 Wanted a book on prayer, got a book on Paul's theology of Prayer, which was much more helpful。 Good to highlight the prayers in his letters and further how he has come to pray for the things he is praying for。 。。。more

“We are not out on the streets simply trying to convince people intellectually。 Our aim is not to impress people with our musical taste, fiery eloquence, or emotional power。 We are out to win people to Jesus Christ; new birth is required, a demonstration of the power of God in conversion and transformation。”

Brian Thorson

This book provides a solid introduction to the means and purpose of prayer through the faithful examination of a collection of Paul’s prayers。 It also explores common obstacles to prayer and provides a guide to prayer。 The style of writing encourages self-reflection while relying heavily upon Scripture to make its points。 A good primer on prayer。

A very helpful, informative, in depth overview of the prayers of Paul in the New testament epistles。 Not content to leave it at the level of theology, Carson is constantly bringing down Paul's theology to practical areas of daily prayer and a believer's life。 A challenging but also refreshing read, as it is often difficult to know what to pray and we often end up praying for trivialities in lieu of the great burdens which were on the heart of that most prolific of the Apostles。 A very helpful, informative, in depth overview of the prayers of Paul in the New testament epistles。 Not content to leave it at the level of theology, Carson is constantly bringing down Paul's theology to practical areas of daily prayer and a believer's life。 A challenging but also refreshing read, as it is often difficult to know what to pray and we often end up praying for trivialities in lieu of the great burdens which were on the heart of that most prolific of the Apostles。 。。。more

A good and practical guide to thinking about prayer through the lens of the apostle Paul。

A dissection - not at all clinical, but beautifully pastoral - of the prayers throughout the Pauline epistles。 Reflects on elements that could make for a deeper, more joyful prayer life。

The first half of this book is great。 It is, as the author says, a distillation of messages he has preached in the past and there are many good ideas and linkages to Paul's prayers。 Pretty quickly, though, he begins hammering his personal bent on theology and interpreting Paul's letters through that lens only, and then it becomes clear that if you disagree with him, he believes you're in real theological trouble。 There are lots of quotable quotes, some very good Scriptural teaching, and then the The first half of this book is great。 It is, as the author says, a distillation of messages he has preached in the past and there are many good ideas and linkages to Paul's prayers。 Pretty quickly, though, he begins hammering his personal bent on theology and interpreting Paul's letters through that lens only, and then it becomes clear that if you disagree with him, he believes you're in real theological trouble。 There are lots of quotable quotes, some very good Scriptural teaching, and then there's a lot of dogged theological diatribe。 There are many other books that do a better job, so I wouldn't recommend this one。 。。。more

This is a superbly written book that thoroughly anchors prayer in the Pauline texts。 As I pursue a deeper prayer life, many contemporary books seem more anecdotal than expository。 That is not the case with this work。Praying with Paul is filled with insightful analysis of key prayers in the Pauline epistles and how they have practical value for our own prayer lives。 The balance between hermeneutics and application is so well maintained throughout this book that it has landed on my favorite list。W This is a superbly written book that thoroughly anchors prayer in the Pauline texts。 As I pursue a deeper prayer life, many contemporary books seem more anecdotal than expository。 That is not the case with this work。Praying with Paul is filled with insightful analysis of key prayers in the Pauline epistles and how they have practical value for our own prayer lives。 The balance between hermeneutics and application is so well maintained throughout this book that it has landed on my favorite list。What appeals to me most are the following: 1) Carson writes as an ardent follower of Jesus。 His voice is both pastoral and, at key moments, prophetic as he challenges readers to embrace intercessory prayer。 2) The biblical text is the main focus and not treated in a perfunctory manner。 3) Carson is global thinking in his analysis of the the current spiritual state - a particularly appealing to me since I am a global worker living overseas。 His voice resonates across cultural boundaries because he portrays a familiarity with the realities believers face in different parts of the world。 4) Many pages are filled with cogent thoughts, quotable sentences and powerful word pictures that provoke me to deeper reflection。 5) The author does not shy away from the delicate issues of divine sovereignty and prayer or how to view unanswered prayer。As I continue my probing on spiritual matters, works that root a "how to" message in the sacred text itself have become treasures that repeatedly draw me back to their sacred ruminations。 The need for spiritual fervor that is theological informed has never been greater than today and here is a book that makes a robust contribution towards meeting that need。 。。。more

Having completed this book, I have mixed thoughts about it。 I'm not sure who it's aimed at - leaders? Pastors? An excellent book that helped me to rethink prayer and its power in the lives of believers。 I appreciate greatly how Dr。 Carson exposits the prayers of Paul in scripture to better understand what fruitful, biblical, God-honoring prayer looks like。 I am grateful for my deacon mentor giving me this book。 Highly recommend to all Christians seeking to know the Lord more through prayer。

Wonderfully encouraging !D。A。 Carson is one of my favorite commentators and theologians。 This book on the prayers of Paul is an outstanding expression of his heart for the body of Christ。 Through a study of the prayers of Paul he challenges us to pray in the will of God and teaches us the importance and proper standards for our prayer life。 This book is a gem, and I hope to use it in the future for reference and recommendations。 This would make an outstanding home group, prayer group, or Sunday Wonderfully encouraging !D。A。 Carson is one of my favorite commentators and theologians。 This book on the prayers of Paul is an outstanding expression of his heart for the body of Christ。 Through a study of the prayers of Paul he challenges us to pray in the will of God and teaches us the importance and proper standards for our prayer life。 This book is a gem, and I hope to use it in the future for reference and recommendations。 This would make an outstanding home group, prayer group, or Sunday School text。 Very enlightening, encouraging, and convicting! 。。。more

This isn't the most comprehensive book on the topic of prayer, but this is the best book on prayer I've ever read。 If Goodreads would let me add a 6th or 7th star, I'd add them。 Carson is a world-class scholar who writes with incredible clarity。 This book is powerful because it's rooted in the Word of God and the prayers of the apostle Paul。 If you want to learn how to improve your prayer life, this is the book for you。 This isn't the most comprehensive book on the topic of prayer, but this is the best book on prayer I've ever read。 If Goodreads would let me add a 6th or 7th star, I'd add them。 Carson is a world-class scholar who writes with incredible clarity。 This book is powerful because it's rooted in the Word of God and the prayers of the apostle Paul。 If you want to learn how to improve your prayer life, this is the book for you。 。。。more
