Summary
From legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki comes a new manga classic about a prince on a quest for a golden grain that would save his land， never before published in English！
Shuna， the prince of a poor land， watches in despair as his people work themselves to death harvesting the little grain that grows there。 And so， when a traveler presents him with a sample of seeds from a mysterious western land， he sets out to find the source of the golden grain， dreaming of a better life for his subjects。
It is not long before he meets a proud girl named Thea。 After freeing her from captivity， he is pursued by her enemies， and while Thea escapes north， Shuna continues toward the west， finally reaching the Land of the God-Folk。
Will Shuna ever see Thea again？ And will he make it back home from his quest for the golden grain？

Thank you First Second Books and NetGalley for the advanced electronic sampler review copy of this wonderful book。 I really enjoyed the first 24 pages of this never before translated， beautifully illustrated graphic novel。 Gorgeous illustrations were full of detail and the sampler was a tease， making me want to read the rest of the story。 Can’t wait for it to publish so that I can find out what happens next。

It's really a shame that this was never adapted into a film。 I've love Studio Ghibli films ever since I saw my first one -- Howl's Moving Castle -- but have yet to read any of Miyazaki's books。 I'm so grateful to First Second for translating and publishing Shuna's Journey。 It made for a quick read with very little dialogue and short snippets of narration， the gorgeous illustrations being more of the focal point of this story。 The art style is brilliant and captivating， portraying so much meaning It's really a shame that this was never adapted into a film。 I've love Studio Ghibli films ever since I saw my first one -- Howl's Moving Castle -- but have yet to read any of Miyazaki's books。 I'm so grateful to First Second for translating and publishing Shuna's Journey。 It made for a quick read with very little dialogue and short snippets of narration， the gorgeous illustrations being more of the focal point of this story。 The art style is brilliant and captivating， portraying so much meaning with few words of narration to accompany them。 I very much enjoyed this story and would love to follow Shuna on the rest of his journey someday。 。。。more

Shuna’s Journey is a translation of one of Hayao Miyazaki’s first graphic novels。 It’s a retelling with Miyazaki’s signature gorgeous landscapes。 The story feels slow， but is evenly paced。 The afterword by the translator shows the historical relevance。

I loved this！ It had so much in common with Nausicaa that it brought on fond memories for me of watching Nausicaa for the first time。Beautiful illustrations。 Once again Miyazaki tackles the issues of ecological crisis， anthropocentrism， and the interdependence of humanity and nature。 Though they are the central themes and often the stories can provoke feelings of despondency， there is still a sense of hope at the end that if humanity could move to a more ecocentric worldview， perhaps we could do I loved this！ It had so much in common with Nausicaa that it brought on fond memories for me of watching Nausicaa for the first time。Beautiful illustrations。 Once again Miyazaki tackles the issues of ecological crisis， anthropocentrism， and the interdependence of humanity and nature。 Though they are the central themes and often the stories can provoke feelings of despondency， there is still a sense of hope at the end that if humanity could move to a more ecocentric worldview， perhaps we could do something to at least slow down the rate of climate change etc。 。。。more

*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 Thanks for the free graphic novel。*"Shuna's Journey" was written by Hayao Miyazaki before he even co-founded Studio Ghibli， yet his trademark works such as "Princess Mononoke" or "Nausicaa" can be found as templates in this graphic novel or illustrated novel。 The watercolour illustrations are beautiful and is the retelling of a Tibetian story that Miyazaki changed so that it could take place in Asia， perhaps China。 In this versio *I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 Thanks for the free graphic novel。*"Shuna's Journey" was written by Hayao Miyazaki before he even co-founded Studio Ghibli， yet his trademark works such as "Princess Mononoke" or "Nausicaa" can be found as templates in this graphic novel or illustrated novel。 The watercolour illustrations are beautiful and is the retelling of a Tibetian story that Miyazaki changed so that it could take place in Asia， perhaps China。 In this version， prince Shuna （who looks a lot like Ashitaka but is also a model for Nausicaa） sets out on his yakul （the animal that Ashitaka rides in "Mononoke"） to find magical grain to aid his people。 On his way， he encounters slavers and frees two sisters who later aid him as well。 While I found the overall story enjoyable and it was fascinating to see so many templates for later Ghibli movies （such as the robots in "Castle in the Sky"）， the ending was frustrating as was the prince-in-shining-armour-saves-woman-who-then-saves-him business。 But it was an enjoyable read and I am very happy that after almost 30 years， a translation will be made available to the wider public。 4 stars 。。。more

This was a very quick read， but I enjoyed it！ Miyazaki tells a lovely story， as always， and the art is beautiful to look at。 The part I enjoyed the most was when Shuna was on the godfolk island， the visuals from that part were amazing， if a little unsettling。 Overall， 4/5 stars， as it did feel a little rushed at times。 That said， I would definitely read more if the story was continued！Thanks for the ARC

チベットの民話を元に描かれた割とシンプルな物語ですが、宮崎駿の手で魅力的なものになる。1983年に創られたこの漫画に、取り上げられたテーマやその描写にてのちに来る「ナウシカ」などジブリ作品の気配が見られる。
