Summary

The Hull family has owned the Gallows Hill Winery for generations。 The sprawling old house has long been perched on top of a hill overlooking the nearby town, jealously guarding the estate's secrets。 Their wine wins awards。 Their business prospers。 Their family thrives: until Hugh and Maria Hull enter the dark halls of Gallows Hill one last time…and are found dead the next morning。

People whisper that the curse has awakened once more。

It’s been more than a decade since Margot Hull last saw her childhood home。 She was young enough when she was sent away that she barely remembers its dark passageways and secret corners。 But now she's returned to bury her parents and reconnect with the winery that is her family's legacy—and the bloody truth of exactly what lies buried beneath the crumbling estate。 Alone in the sprawling, dilapidated building, Margot is forced to come face to face with the horrors of the past—and realize that she may be the next victim of a house that never rests。。。

AWESOME JOURNEY。 WANT TO READ EVERYTHING SHE WRITES。

I burned through this book much faster than I expected to, because I was so engrossed in the story I picked it up every time I had a few spare minutes。 The creepy setting combined with the richness of the writing made it very memorable, not to mention outright terrifying in the second half。 I'm fairly certain this will be making my shortlist of favorite books I've read this year, and Darcy Coates may become an author whose work I buy every time a new book gets released。 I burned through this book much faster than I expected to, because I was so engrossed in the story I picked it up every time I had a few spare minutes。 The creepy setting combined with the richness of the writing made it very memorable, not to mention outright terrifying in the second half。 I'm fairly certain this will be making my shortlist of favorite books I've read this year, and Darcy Coates may become an author whose work I buy every time a new book gets released。 。。。more

DNF at 43%, I'm sorry I just couldn't get into this book。 As soon as I started putting it off or skimming through it I knew this wasn't for me。 Although the writing is atmospheric and intriguing, the story was such a slow burn I couldn't get into it。 To this point there's still nothing creepy or scary happening。 The main character is annoying and makes stupid decisions。 I needed more。 DNF at 43%, I'm sorry I just couldn't get into this book。 As soon as I started putting it off or skimming through it I knew this wasn't for me。 Although the writing is atmospheric and intriguing, the story was such a slow burn I couldn't get into it。 To this point there's still nothing creepy or scary happening。 The main character is annoying and makes stupid decisions。 I needed more。 。。。more

Another creepy one by Darcy。 This time Margot inherits a winery and a house after her parents both mysteriously die of heart attacks on the same day。 Her parents sent her away when she was 8 and she never heard from them again。 Strange things start happening almost immediately when she arrives including the way the staff of the winery and house act。 Margot soon finds out she is cursed and she can’t leave the property or she will die。 I loved how the ending of this book came together。 It was a su Another creepy one by Darcy。 This time Margot inherits a winery and a house after her parents both mysteriously die of heart attacks on the same day。 Her parents sent her away when she was 8 and she never heard from them again。 Strange things start happening almost immediately when she arrives including the way the staff of the winery and house act。 Margot soon finds out she is cursed and she can’t leave the property or she will die。 I loved how the ending of this book came together。 It was a surprise twist。 。。。more

Would usually give Darcy Coates books at least four stars but this one got three as it was such a slow read。Saying that, it was beautifully written and really, really creepy so please do not read this alone, at night!!!At first I thought it was slow going but would build momentum as the story got going but it didn’t。 It was slow, slow, slow。 Stick with it though as there’s a good story to it and it really is scary AF in places!!!It does get better towards the end; by that I mean it speeds up a b Would usually give Darcy Coates books at least four stars but this one got three as it was such a slow read。Saying that, it was beautifully written and really, really creepy so please do not read this alone, at night!!!At first I thought it was slow going but would build momentum as the story got going but it didn’t。 It was slow, slow, slow。 Stick with it though as there’s a good story to it and it really is scary AF in places!!!It does get better towards the end; by that I mean it speeds up a bit, with more events。Not going to go into too much detail as I don’t want to spoil it for you but it’s definitely a worthwhile read so stick with it! Ok, when I started this book I thought it was going to be super slow。 And I was scared for my good boi Marsh。 But MAN did it pick up! I totally didn’t see the ending coming, had goosebumps the entire time reading! Definitely needed to sleep with Friends on after reading late at night。 Really enjoyed this book more than I thought。 And Marsh was ok! :)

Natassia Hyduk

Too much of a slow pace for me and even once it picked up I still found it overall to be lackluster…。 2 stars bc I did enjoy some of the spooky descriptions🔔, I didn’t hate the ending and Marsh 🐾❤️

And just like that, he was done drinking wine。 Forever。

But of an abrupt ending, but a great spooky read! Highly suggest for the Halloween season!!!

Margot parents die under unusual circumstances。 So after more than a decade, she heads home to attend the funeral only to find out that the family is cursed and she is the sole heir to their estate, Gallows Hill along with the winery that sits on the property。This was a perfect read for spooky season! The first part of the book is a slow burn, but the second half really picked up。 The book has plenty of atmosphere, tension and provides creepy scares。 I would recommend this to readers looking for Margot parents die under unusual circumstances。 So after more than a decade, she heads home to attend the funeral only to find out that the family is cursed and she is the sole heir to their estate, Gallows Hill along with the winery that sits on the property。This was a perfect read for spooky season! Beautiful writing with descriptive characters and scenes。 Many creepy-skin crawling chapters。 Margot’s character was well thought out as she came alive on the pages。 The connection between past and present day came together as the mystery is solved。

I wanted a suspenseful Halloween story and this one had good reviews even though I didn't have a clue who Darcy Coates was or what she wrote。 But I love a haunted house so I gave it a try。 At first I thought it might turn out to be a Scooby Doo haunting - girl inherits a mansion and successful business and someone "haunts" it so she'll run away and they can take it over。 Let's just say that's not what it was。 It wasn't really what I was looking for but if you want a scary story that hits the gro I wanted a suspenseful Halloween story and this one had good reviews even though I didn't have a clue who Darcy Coates was or what she wrote。 But I love a haunted house so I gave it a try。 At first I thought it might turn out to be a Scooby Doo haunting - girl inherits a mansion and successful business and someone "haunts" it so she'll run away and they can take it over。 Let's just say that's not what it was。 It wasn't really what I was looking for but if you want a scary story that hits the ground running and doesn't let up this one is for you。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this book, from the first page this book had me hooked。 Darcy Coates is the the queen of creepy, atmospheric books and she knows how to write a great horror read。The characters were realistic and relatable and the story was well written with a solid story line。All the spooky stuff that happens to Margot is believable, as we have all looked into a dark room and thought something was standing there staring at us。 Or we have heard strange noises and think someone is in our hime。W I absolutely loved this book, from the first page this book had me hooked。 Darcy Coates is the the queen of creepy, atmospheric books and she knows how to write a great horror read。The characters were realistic and relatable and the story was well written with a solid story line。All the spooky stuff that happens to Margot is believable, as we have all looked into a dark room and thought something was standing there staring at us。 Or we have heard strange noises and think someone is in our hime。What I really loved was the amazing back story of how the winery started and the tragedy that befell the family。This would be a good halloween read for October。 。。。more

this was (somehow) my first ever darcy coates novel and i’m calling it a wild success。 this was slow-burn horror that genuinely creeped me out reading it at night (especially in the woods while tent camping。 would not recommend that。) and had such a death grip on me in the last 80%。 five stars for this bone-chilling, atmospheric, bump in the night kind of horror。 i’ll definitely be coming back for more by darcy coates。

I loved this! Over the past few months I’ve read 3 Darcy Coates books and this one is my favorite! Fast paced, creepy, and an awesome backstory! Everything was wrapped up nicely and it was overall a really good read!

He was so silent I barely got a whiff of his personality。 On the other hand, Margot, who is on the page all the time, is written as an idiotic character who says one thing now and four pages later is like, “I’ll do exactly the opposite。”● Coates has Margot constantly make very bad no-good decisions to get her in trouble and have some action happening, because Kant et al instead of providing documentation (WRITE THAT SHIT DOWN) and explanations are like, “Let’s keep silent in the hope she’ll survive the night and lead us to new prosperity!”It’s very hard to feel sympathy for Margot when she decides to investigate an unfamiliar house at one in the morning。 Why? Call 911。 You live in a first world country, you get first world privileges。● Actually, this whole book is built on bad decisions that people make because of procrastination, poor planning, and lack of analysis。Which really makes me wonder: how good is that corpse wine? They were able to prosper despite being greatly lacking in the judgment department because of that sweet, sweet mummy juice。(view spoiler)[By the way, this whole castle of bad decisions lies on the foundation of the first bad decision made by Ephraim and Ezra’s father — the one who was like “only one son will get the money!” With that kind of stellar parenting, it makes sense why Ezra was a numbskull whose business plan was corporate takeover through family extermination。(hide spoiler)]● Lastly, I hate that fucking phone。 I don’t know what kind of 2004 phone Margot has got, but that phone should’ve been replaced the moment she set foot on the property。 (view spoiler)[Also, the business’ employees who finally give her information when she’s banged up and sporting an arm and/or leg cast — none of them thought to bring her a flashlight。 They just tell her she’ll need a light。 (hide spoiler)] and other stuff i didn’t know where to put(view spoiler)[● I’m not clear whether Margot is a person of color。 It’s never explicitly mentioned, only Coates keeps mentioning her frizzy hair and that her scars stand out against her “darker skin。” Unless she has, like, a tan, or something。But if she is, then yikes, because white people dead for over 250 years are coming back to give a POC woman a piece of their dead minds。 DEATH WILL NOT STOP ME FROM TELLING YOU THAT YOU DON’T BELONG HEEEEREAlso there was one scene where Margot was on her knees on the ground begging for mercy from a dead white man, and that’s just yikes as optics。Anyway legitimately she doesn’t even get to enjoy her generational wealth before she’s like, “I have to do the responsible thing,” and spends it on reparations。 Hilarious。● I’m assuming Kant and Andrew are boyfriends。 Which again, is not explicitly mentioned, only a couple of throwaway sentences here and there。 So maybe I’m reading too much into it。 But if they are a couple, then, wow, fucking finally, Coates writes another queer couple, neither of whom are dead, into her novel。But you know what? Maybe they are just friends。 They’re boy pals。 And that’s not representation because Coates just drops hints instead of having either character mention straight up that they’re, IDK, life partners, married, WHATEVS。Coates it is 2022 what the fuck are you afraid of? They’re just side characters!! At least say that shit straight up, none of this coy “a familiar, tender touch” bullshit。 You spent fucking 50 pages telling me about Margot putting on a poor imitation of Fatal Frame, you couldn’t spare a line or two to tell me they’re together?(hide spoiler)] 。。。more
