Summary

notes: watching the tv show and checked to see when i read this and realized it never got entered, so these dates are approximate。 i am probably giving this book too much credit。 the content was rad, but the style was dry, repetitive, and boring。 “but it’s a history — history books are dry, repetitive, and boring!” to which i say that grrm should read cv wedgwood。

A really good read for a history of a fantastic world that never existed。 The hints given throughout “A Song of Ice and Fire” to the events of previous ages make this so engrossing。 The origin of some traditions and the rise of and decline of some of the great houses of Westeros is expertly handled by the author。 The best part is that it’s only the first part of the history of the Targaryens with the second part still to come。 Before or after “Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring” is in the l A really good read for a history of a fantastic world that never existed。 The hints given throughout “A Song of Ice and Fire” to the events of previous ages make this so engrossing。 The origin of some traditions and the rise of and decline of some of the great houses of Westeros is expertly handled by the author。 The best part is that it’s only the first part of the history of the Targaryens with the second part still to come。 Before or after “Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring” is in the lap of the old gods and the new。 。。。more

A fine, fictional history that covers the first half of the ever fascinating Targaryen dynasty of George RR Martin's World of Ice and Fire。 This book is not for the casual fan: you will find little to no connection to our favourite characters in the series proper, and since this story is portrayed as a history as opposed to a novel, we do not get quite the same emotional punch that Martin usually packs。 No matter, the characters are sometimes faced with moral quandaries of their own, though we a A fine, fictional history that covers the first half of the ever fascinating Targaryen dynasty of George RR Martin's World of Ice and Fire。 This book is not for the casual fan: you will find little to no connection to our favourite characters in the series proper, and since this story is portrayed as a history as opposed to a novel, we do not get quite the same emotional punch that Martin usually packs。 No matter, the characters are sometimes faced with moral quandaries of their own, though we are provided no insight into their interior lives。 Even so, the machinations of plot and story are enough to keep the more insistent fans satiated。 For now。 I look forward to the next half of Targ history, including the Blackfyre Rebellions and the deaths of Rhaegar and Lyanna。 。。。more

A pretty fun and well written history of the Targaryen dynasty。 The way GRRM writes is very academic and factful, pretty rewarding to read if you spend a lot of time reading academic work。 I enjoyed it but I did feel that the repetitive nature of things bugged me down at times。 Maybe it's because that is the very nature of dynastic infighting and how things work both in medieval historic dynasties and fantasy ones as well。 A pretty fun and well written history of the Targaryen dynasty。 The way GRRM writes is very academic and factful, pretty rewarding to read if you spend a lot of time reading academic work。 I enjoyed it but I did feel that the repetitive nature of things bugged me down at times。 Maybe it's because that is the very nature of dynastic infighting and how things work both in medieval historic dynasties and fantasy ones as well。 。。。more

Though I love GRRM, GOT, and HOTD story and it’s characters, Fire and Blood was not my favorite。 It is written as a historical text and therefore did not read like a novel。 It was very dense, lots of descriptions of battle, SO many names to remember (though many of them are Aegon!), which didn’t feel necessary。 Im glad I read it, but wouldn’t read again。

I would give this book a solid 4。5/5 stars。 As my introduction to George R。R。 Martin I found the large majority of this book very interesting and it was hard to put down。 With that being said after the “Dying of the Dragons” chapters the book truly did start to feel like history homework rather than the mix of battles, politics, betrayals, and crazy dragon scenes that I game to love。 Nonetheless, I enjoyed this book and have found myself further intrigued into the G。 O。 T。 Lore。

Reading this has absolutely confirmed to me that a lot of the Twitter stans have never touched this book in their life and that they've just skimmed over one or two wiki pages。 To say that the characters in this are more nuanced or interesting than in the show is ridiculous。 "The showrunners are ruining Daemon!

Excellent story of the Targaryen family over the years。 Absorbing reading for sure。

Great stories filled the volume--the dance of the dragons is fantastic, but is also covered elsewhere。 The end is somewhat anticlimactic after "The Dance"。 Great stories filled the volume--the dance of the dragons is fantastic, but is also covered elsewhere。 The end is somewhat anticlimactic after "The Dance"。 。。。more

It's been years since I read this and I only vaguely remember a few key plot points (which has actually worked out really well as most of the main developments in the show are a surprise to me)。 The book itself was much weaker than any entry in the main ASOIAF series。 The writing style (written as an in-universe but unreliable history book) made it hard to really care about any of the characters and at times the plot seemed to go by in a blur (a supposedly important character would be introduced It's been years since I read this and I only vaguely remember a few key plot points (which has actually worked out really well as most of the main developments in the show are a surprise to me)。 The book itself was much weaker than any entry in the main ASOIAF series。 The writing style (written as an in-universe but unreliable history book) made it hard to really care about any of the characters and at times the plot seemed to go by in a blur (a supposedly important character would be introduced, do something important then be brutally killed off all within a page)。 I'd probably rate it around 3 stars。 However having just finished the last episode of season 1 of the show I was motivated to finally write a review (more of the show than the book)。The show was absolutely brilliant and went back to peak early-seasons GoT。 Complex characters, great acting, intelligent & suspenseful plotting。 The show took the vague outline given in the book and really breathed life into it。 Perhaps my favourite element, like with the early seasons of GoT, is that in any conflict I'm never entirely sure who to root for。 Each faction has characters who have elements of good and evil and their own motivations for their actions which really makes the world feel alive and real。The stars of the 1st season to me were probably Daemon, Viserys and Alicent (cue shocked gasps)。 Daemon was really the only character I remembered from the book and Matt Smith really brought him to life as a dangerous, unpredictable force。 The ending to episode 3 (I think, you know the one) was one of the most incredible 20 minutes of TV I've seen, and all without a line of dialogue。 Viserys was a well-meaning but weak king who's indecisiveness is often blamed on causing a disastrous civil war。 However I thought the writing of the show (and the brilliant acting of Paddy Considine who should clean house at the Emmys) brought a degree of tragedy and nobility to the character (view spoiler)[ I was glad to see him having 1 moment of triumph in his last episode with that slow-mo big baller walk to the throne (hide spoiler)]。 Alicent (through both actresses who play her) while oftten vilified showed an even more tragic character in many ways。 Since she was a child she was forced into difficult situations by those around her who should have looked out for her and just tried to navigate each situation according to her codes of honour while also protecting her family。Overall this was one of the best seasons of television I've seen in a long time。 It's done the almost impossible of redeeming the GoT universe for me and I'm gonna struggle to wait 2 years for season 2。 Of course I've been waiting for Winds of Winter since I read the rest of the ASOIAF series 10 years ago so I've had plenty practice。 。。。more

Full disclosure: this is a re-read, but it’s been a long time since I last read ‘Fire and Blood’ and having forgotten a lot of the finer details in the meantime, I wanted to experience it all again with fresh eyes。 I also wanted to see how it compares to the HBO TV adaptation ‘House of the Dragon’, which I think did an excellent job of bringing these characters to life and dare I say, even enhancing them in some cases。 But needless to say, nobody does world-building and rich, compelling in-story Full disclosure: this is a re-read, but it’s been a long time since I last read ‘Fire and Blood’ and having forgotten a lot of the finer details in the meantime, I wanted to experience it all again with fresh eyes。 I also wanted to see how it compares to the HBO TV adaptation ‘House of the Dragon’, which I think did an excellent job of bringing these characters to life and dare I say, even enhancing them in some cases。 But needless to say, nobody does world-building and rich, compelling in-story lore like George R。R。 Martin, and I’m reminded of this each and every time I read or re-read any of his material。 His attention to detail is absolutely mind-blowing and the way he angled this story from the perspective of three unreliable narrators while still making the narrative feel utterly believable is nothing short of mastery。 The opening chapters on Aegon’s Conquest are fascinating and really draw you in, but the chapters covering Jaehaerys the Conciliator and Good Queen Alysanne’s reign remain my uncontested favourites。 For understandable reasons, the Aegon III chapters do drag a bit compared to the carnage that came before his era, but to be honest it was almost nice to have a bit of a reprieve as while I already knew from my first read how the Dance of the Dragons had played out, I’d forgotten just how ruthless and bleak it got towards the end。GRRM is that rare kind of writer where you’ll always find new little nuggets of insight or symbolism even on your 50th read of the same story - admittedly, it’s this unique gift for writing such exquisitely layered stories while remaining in full command of the vastness of your world and characters that’s likely at least partially responsible for him writing himself into a hole and making slower progress on finishing the remaining books in the ASOIAF series。 But I, for one, am happy for him to take all the time he needs if this level of mastery is what we get in return! 。。。more

The decision to read this book was greatly influenced by HBO’s House of The Dragon announcement。 The books felt very much different from the ASOIAF series in terms of writing and narration。 GRRM could have possibly written five volumes to explain the Targaryen line in details, which felt much cut off as it was explained through Mushroom or Munkun。 Thoroughly enjoyed this book。 Cannot wait to see how HBO adapts the Dance of The Dragon on screen。

There are a bajillion characters to keep up with in the GOT/ASOIAF universe。 This plus The World OF Ice And Fire made it easier for me and provided some visuals for me as well。 If you want to go down this rabbit hole of information and are a fan of the show and universe, then check this out。

Reads like a history bookIt is long and overly detailed。 There are some very intriguing plots and surprising turns。 It is difficult to keep up with all the characters including their dragons。 Google the family tree and maps as you go as the book itself does no such thing。 This book is for diehard Game of Throne fans。
