Summary

The first kidnappings happened two hundred years before。 Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each。 But if at first the choices seemed random, soon the pattern became clear。 One was always beautiful and good, the child every parent wanted as their own。 The other was homely and odd, an outcast from birth。 An opposing pair, plucked from youth and spirited away。

This year, best friends Sophie and Agatha are about to discover where all the lost children go: the fabled School for Good & Evil, where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains。 As the most beautiful girl in Gavaldon, Sophie has dreamed of being kidnapped into an enchanted world her whole life。 With her pink dresses, glass slippers, and devotion to good deeds, she knows she’ll earn top marks at the School for Good and graduate a storybook princess。 Meanwhile Agatha, with her shapeless black frocks, wicked pet cat, and dislike of nearly everyone, seems a natural fit for the School for Evil。

But when the two girls are swept into the Endless Woods, they find their fortunes reversed—Sophie’s dumped in the School for Evil to take Uglification, Death Curses, and Henchmen Training, while Agatha finds herself in the School For Good, thrust amongst handsome princes and fair maidens for classes in Princess Etiquette and Animal Communication。。 But what if the mistake is actually the first clue to discovering who Sophie and Agatha really are…?

“This was never Sophie’s fairytale。 It was hers。”I remember I first read this book when I was 10 or 11 and completely loving it, it was probably my first obsession with something that was my own, if that makes sense?Reading it again 6 years later I find myself falling into that same obsession。 This book is so funny and beautiful and the world building is impeccable。 Very different to the movie, which is a good thing。

I reread this book in 24 hours to watch the movie and I have thoughtsThe first time I read this book was when I was a teenager, I remember loving it and wanting read the next, and never continuing afterwards。 When the movie was announced, I wanted to reread the book before watching, but was feeling lazy and didn't started reading before the movie launched。 And then Thursday, my mom wanted to watch the movie, so I convinced her to watch Saturday and had just 48 hours to read the whole thing。 Then I reread this book in 24 hours to watch the movie and I have thoughtsThe first time I read this book was when I was a teenager, I remember loving it and wanting read the next, and never continuing afterwards。 When the movie was announced, I wanted to reread the book before watching, but was feeling lazy and didn't started reading before the movie launched。 And then Thursday, my mom wanted to watch the movie, so I convinced her to watch Saturday and had just 48 hours to read the whole thing。 Then I just started reading Friday, so 24hrs。 And here we are now (mild spoilers will be tagged)The GoodWriting & Plot: If this books wasn't easy and good to read, I wouldn't have finished in such short time。 I got the impression Chainani really likes describing scenarios, because the details just helped me a lot to visualize the whole book: From the glittering halls for the Beautification Rooms, the colorful magic forest and it's magical beasts and the mistreated halls in the School of Evil。 It was fun reading about Sophie methods of beauty and Agatha devouring each room, an description that makes you feel reading a fairy tale。The plot is quite direct, so you can find yourself wandering around sometimes to make the story last longer。 I think it's done well enough, especially when it gets to Agatha and Sophie trying to go home, because they basically contradict each other。 And the plan near the end was (chef's kiss) perfect。Characters: While the characters aren't all that deep, I think they are competent enough to make the story interesting。Agatha is the "Not Like Other Girls", without being insufferable。 If anything, her struggles make her journey quite interesting。 She is someone that, for not having a graceful appearance like Sophie, an easy personality to get along and not having "girly interests", many already damn her as a witch and a bad person, from her hometown to the school。 And she believes it。 She doesn't believe she is better than the other "girly girls", if anything she feels even more insecure and frustrated that every attempt she makes to be like them is meet with disgust and disapproval。 And she is convinced she belongs with the Nevers, while also saying she doesn't want to do bad things, just go home with Sophie。 And she is smart and very hard working, but (in a cute way, for me) she never acknowledges it。 And when she finally assumes who she is, it's so cool。 I wish there was more, but I will explain my problems with Agatha later。。。。Sophie is the complete opposite, if anything, she is a very well written dubious character。 You see, Sophie wants her Happily Ever After, at any costs necessary。 And if she has to hurt a few people along the way, so be it, but she also want to be seen as a helpless flower。 Sophie is quite manipulative in a way that feels she doesn't notice it。 After all, it's only natural she gets the prince, the beauty and the glory, and everyone who says the contrary, is a villain。 She is so desperate to be perceived as Good, that she does Bad things。 She manipulates Agatha to do whatever she wants, she manipulate the other witches saying that, if they help her, she will no longer be in their lifes anymore。 She cheats, she lies, she uses others as shield and she still want to be see as good, caring and innocently helpless。 And it takes very long to recognize that even doing bad things (and feeling good in doing them), she still genuinely wants to be loved by someone。Last is Tedros, and I will keep it short: I like Tedros's character struggle。 Since he is the son of King Arthur, he has some very high expectations over him, and he questions his every decisions。 When he is overconfident with something, but just anything starts to go the wrong direction, Tedros already wonders what is going wrong and is worried about what his dad would say or do in his place。 And also: His Princess。 Since Guinevere leaves Arthur for Lancelot, Tedros struggles with it a lot。 How he will find "the one", sure enough she isn't going to leave him in the future。 It's quite ironic that he doesn't want people to be superficial with him。。。 While also being superficial himself。 There is also the fact that Tedros is quite the "Ideal Prince", but in actuality isn't all that great。 Sure, he has the looks and muscles, but there are many times he is tricked and played around by others。 And I think it's also a interesting choice to presente the Evers。 Since they have been winning for the last 200 years, the new students got lax, because they know their good looks and sweet smiles can get the best os endings, so you could say that most of Evers are quite superficial, when they should be the embodiment of goodness。 In the other had, the Nevers are just "the looser" getting humiliated at every opportunity and have to try their hardest to prove they are better than the Ever, which gets very interesting in the climax。"Friendship" of Agatha and Sophie: (view spoiler)[Nowadays, we would surely call Agatha and Sophie relationship abusive and it is。 Many times Sophie uses, deceive and blames Agatha for everything。 When everything is going Sophie's way, Agatha is a guardian angel, when it isn't, Agatha is a heinous monster trying to steal everything from her。 Meanwhile, Agatha takes it because she kinda has a parasitic dependency for Sophie。 No one gives Agatha a chance and the only person who ever did, even if it started with a lie, was Sophie。 So while there are many moments she is hurt or disagrees with Sophie, she "gets over it" because Agatha doesn't want to lose her only "friend"。 And in that moment their interest crashes: Agatha wants to go home with Sophie because she doesn't want to lose her friend for a Fairy Tale, but Sophie will do absolutely anything to keep her Fairy Tale happening, even if it hurts Agatha。 But。。。 They do really care for each other? Like, we see it from Agatha all the time, but I think it's important to note from Sophie。 Again, many times she has the opportunity to kill Agatha and some moments she almost does, but Sophie always saves Agatha in the end。 Sophie knows Agatha cares for her a lot, and she is sometimes touched by it (before going craycray land)。 She does care for Agatha, as a friend, even if Sophie is a terrible friend regardless。 (hide spoiler)]The BadPoorly Aged or Developed: So, there are a few problems with how some characters are。 There is the boy no one likes because he is smelly, there is the fat girl who her whole personality is eating and so on。 While I first read I didn't bother, now。。。 Yeah, those part didn't aged well to me。Another thing I find it funny is when, in the School of Evil, the professor says true villains don't care for their appearance, and them you have: The Evil Queen (who wants to be the most beautiful), The Snow Queen (who is described as very beautiful), Bella's sisters (who are envious about her beauty) and so on。 I know what the author tried to do here, but it the fairy tales contradict what he is trying to do, can't help it。Character Problem (A lot of them): So, while I said I love the characters, I also have a lot critism for them, so here:Agatha is my favorite character。 She is also the least interesting。 You see, through the whole book she is just focused in one thing: Sophie。 And because of that, she doesn't have anything else。 When she isn't with Sophie or thinking in a way to go home, she is just。。。 There。 Like, she doesn't like how princesses classes make her quite helpless, but throw the whole book, she is helpless。 She has only "1 power", that serves for absolutely nothing except 1 scene。 She can be quite determinate, but that never works in her favor。 And no one listens to her while also。。。 Blaming/Using her? I feel like Agatha had potencial and it isn't used in any moment and that just makes me sad。I guess a better way to understand in comparing Agatha to Sophie here: Sophie grow in the story is her fight for the Happily Ever After, and while she can be quite cruel and insensitive, it's fun to read。 She cries a lot, but finds a way to turn things around her favor。 By the end of the book, Sophie does all the work to make the story progress forward with her plans and schemes and Agatha。。。 Is just used all the way。 While Agatha's acceptances is really cool to see, it just goes anywhere from there。 And considering Agatha and Sophie are both not only both protagonists in this book, but Agatha isn't all that interesting? Sophie ends up being a much more interesting character while Agatha, who is supposed to be her contrapoint, doesn't really standout。I also have this problem with both Tedros and the Witches (Sophie's roommates) that they are very dependable from the plot。 Like, half the book the Witches want to kill Sophie and also help Sophie and they never really decide in their relationship。 They will hate Sophie when the plot demands and help Sophie when in the next page。 Same thing with Tedros, I wish he was a more。。。 Solid character? Again, he has the potential to be something more, but never really goes the extra mile。Spoiler: A bit of the romance(view spoiler)[While I do like the "It Was Always You" vibe Tedros and Agatha have for each other, it doesn't help that Tedros was quite a dick with Agatha for most of the book。 And when Agatha needs Tedros to trust her the most, he just doesn't? Like, I understand all the trauma he has from his parents's relationship, but he let's Sophie trick him when, at the point this happened, he hates Sophie, thinks she is an awful manipulative person and says that on Agatha's face。 And even still, he would rather believe Sophie, who he hates, than Agatha, who he claims he is in love。 (hide spoiler)]The In BetweenAbandoned Plots? So, there are things that a thrown in the narrative that or never comeback or just works for certain characters。 I find it quite。。。 Sad。Spoiler: The animals and mascots(view spoiler)[Like the fact that every animal in the Florest were students who failed? We have one powerful scene of Agatha turning them into human and another were she "shows the truth", but that's it? Like, we don't go back for this topic。 To book credit, the first time it happened the school staff hide it and when Agatha reveals the truth for everyone, it's already by the end of the book and there is other things happening, but still。 I kinda hope this is brought up again in the future。 But my main pet peeve is the mascot thing。 Close the end, Sophie uses her Cupid Grimm to do some dirty work important for her big plan, and Beatrix, a Ever, uses her rabbit to discovers something from the Nevers。 But。。。 ALL characters have mascot。 Heck, they gave Agatha an ostrich and Tedros a wolf, but they never used it? I guess the students "freed" the animals, but if so, why Beatrix keeps hers? It kinda annoys me because, again, Sophie has all the advantage。 (hide spoiler)]Little rant: Let's talk ACTUAL fairy tales: While I get it "The Princess gets saved by the Prince, in the end", uh。。。 Many fairy tales the princess rescue themselves? Or the prince just do the job by the end? Like, in Beauty and the Beast, the prince is dying and the princess is the one who has to save him。 Little Mermaid, the princess loves the prince so much that she can't sacrifice him for her own happiness, so she sacrifices herself for him。 Rapunzel, while the prince promises to save her, she is thrown from the tower by the witch before he can save her and she is the one who saves the prince, not the prince who saves her。 Snow White she IS rescued by the prince, but before that she has to protect herself from the Evil Queen, and she makes the friendship with the dwarfs, which save her for most of the story。 Donkey Skin the princess is "safe" half way throw the tale, until the prince sees her beautifully dressed and marries her, getting their ever after。 Vasilisa the Fair does everything by herself and just in the end she gets married to a rich guy with a separate quest。 And so on, there are stories that princess are saved by princes (like Sleeping Beauty) or others with no romance or saving in the end (Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears), what I am trying to say: Princess aren't all that helpless damsels everyone else or this book try to make them to be。Final ThoughtsI don't think it's the greatest book, but even with his flaws, I still enjoyed。 I got more demanding as a reader now that I was years ago and I still had fun。 It won't be the first book recommendation I will give, but if someone asked me about it, I would say it's fun。 So there is that。Expectations for the Next Books(view spoiler)[I am a little worried about how Agatha will be in the next books。 It gives me the impression she will stay kinda stagnated while Sophie shines more, which sucks because even complaining, I still like Agatha the best。There is also the thing with Agatha and Tedros relationship。 I am a little worried it will be one of those "They love each other very much, but in the book half of the time, they are fighting"。 And I don't want that。 I want see Agatha being cute and messily in love with each other。Not sure what to expect the next one, but I hope it will be good (fingers crossed) (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Rereading this because I wanna watch the Netflix movie adaptation😅I believe I enjoyed it more back then, but it’s still a good page turner。 It was a good experience rereading it through my more mature eyes。 Reminds me a lot of why I love YA still。

As a fan of Harry Potter I thought I’d like this book a lot。 My daughter devoured these books。 It was a good idea and plot, but it’s missing something。 I feel like the paragraph and story transitions could have been better。 There is a lot of description on some spots and not enough in others。 When they switched from the two main character perspectives there was no pause or spacing。 It was abrupt。 It’s a magical read and shows that princesses can be tough。 But I think it needed a better editor。

Despite being skeptical of this book for quite a long time, I ended up actually really enjoying it! I was always put off by the fact it was classified as a 'middle-grade' book and many reviews on Goodreads and other platforms were either really good or really bad。 However with the adaptation being released and two if my favourite actors (who were incredible by the way I just finished the movie) were representing the characters on screen I knew I had to read it。 And I was pleasantly surprised!🙃If you love anything got to do with fairytales, royalty, witches and magic (like me) then you will love this book。 It reminds me of a cartoon series and collection of dolls I used to love called 'Ever After High。' The concept is eerily similar and that may be partly why I loved it!The story follows two girls who are best friends, living in the little village of Gavaldon which is entirely surrounded by forest。 The girls are polar opposites。 One is inherently 'good' while the other is inherently 'evil', at least according to them。 Every couple of years two children are picked to attend the School for Good and Evil by the School's headmaster。 These children later turn up in storybooks, carrying on the fairy tales the villagers have come to know and love。As I mentioned the girls are complete opposites of eachother。 All Sophie has ever dreamed of is becoming a princess and one day finding her true love。 She is described as beautiful and kind, always helping out where she can。 She is also obsessed with looking her best, her long blonde curly having to be perfect。 Each and every day she skips down to the small cottage by the graveyard, the place in which everyone else avoids, to meet her friend Agatha。Agatha is described as an ugly, lonely girl。 Many accuse her if being a witch and therefore she isolates herself。 But she loves Sophie more than anyone else in the world (besides her cat!) which I think is adorable。Sophie is entranced by the idea of fairytales, becoming a princess and finding her happily ever after with a prince while Agatha believes the storybooks she reads to be nonsense。 She laughs when Sophie insists that she would be picked to go to the School for good the following evening。 But when the School's headmaster does end up coming for Sophie that night, (despite her trying absolutely everything to ensure she would be stolen from her bed!) Agatha makes a valiant attempt to save her but instead ends up being dragged to the School with Sophie。 When the girls arrive at the School for Good and Evil however, neither could have anticipated what was about to happen next。 Agatha was dropped in the school for good while Sophie is dragged (yes dragged, writhing and screaming that it was a mistake。。。。poor Sophie) is dropped in the school for evil。 Both girls believe it is a mistake as surely Agatha should be evil and Sophie should be good。。。right? Well the girls try to explain this to the staff but to no avail。 "There are no mistakes made in the School for Good and Evil"I think the aesthetic of this book is what initially drew me in。 The world building is incredible and the concept is amazing, despite it being somewhat familiar。 Princess and princes? Witches? Magic? Creatures? Balls? Deadly trials? Children of story book parents? Yes please! I will say the stereotypical themes throughout this book are quite prevalent and also annoying。 But it makes sense for the story??? Like the side characters in the school's for good and evil were all so incredibly set in their ways, and some of it was very cheesy。 So you kind of have to deal with the cringyness of some parts if you really enjoy the story。 Also the romance killedddddd me。 I'm sorry but I hated Tedros with a burning passion。 He's just so cliché and un-genuine! Despite the love triangle *spoilers sorry!!* he literally cares about neither of them he just wants to be the charming, valiant prince who married whoever the kind Princess is that works with his story and makes him look good! It's so annoying how vain he is and I wish we'd been given a more intriguing character for Tedros。One thing I loved about this book was the way the line between good and evil was blurred。 Like yes Sophie is 'Good' trapped in evil while Agatha is 'evil' trapped in good but is that really the case? Both girls are on a tightrope, and one tiny over balance of weight into one side and they'll topple。 This created an incredible Segway for character development throughout the book。 We saw how badly Sophie wanted to be a princess。 She would do absolutely ANYTHING to be one。 Even going so far as working with her evil roommates or using her best friend。 Agatha in the other hand just wanted her best friend back。 So they could go home together and return to their ordinary mundane lives。Overall I really enjoyed this book and it 100% exceeded my expectations despite the many negative reviews。 I'd say it's a solid 4。5 out of 5 a stars。 ⭐⭐⭐⭐。5 I'd definitely give this book a try if you want a simple, light-hearted while simultaneously intense fairy tale magic books! If you've read this far Kudos to you!✨And thank you! This is my first book review so 。。。enjoy I guess?🙃 。。。more

Quite possibly one of the worst books I have read in my life。 It is sloppy, disorganized, and there is not enough descriptions to satisfy the beauty of the world。Don't get me wrong, the concept is beautiful and I can see why people would gravitate towards this。 But this would have been executed better。 Quite possibly one of the worst books I have read in my life。 It is sloppy, disorganized, and there is not enough descriptions to satisfy the beauty of the world。Don't get me wrong, the concept is beautiful and I can see why people would gravitate towards this。 But this would have been executed better。 。。。more
