The lesson from this book comforted me a lot, a lot & a looottt when I need that comfort most。 It still does。 Whenever I miss the people who were soooo close to me, feel sad, this book reminds me that, I keep them in my heart。 So it's okay to cry but shouldn't break it。It's a children book, but the message is sooo deep。even if children wouldn't get the message fully, i hope they'll understand it at any age of their whole life。Love it。 💜💜 The lesson from this book comforted me a lot, a lot & a looottt when I need that comfort most。 It still does。 Whenever I miss the people who were soooo close to me, feel sad, this book reminds me that, I keep them in my heart。 So it's okay to cry but shouldn't break it。It's a children book, but the message is sooo deep。even if children wouldn't get the message fully, i hope they'll understand it at any age of their whole life。Love it。 💜💜 。。。more

I read Cry, Heart, But Never Break by Glenn Ringtved as an E-book on Hoopla。 As part of my reading course, I decided to read this book as we studied international children’s literature。 I chose this book because it was awarded the 2017 Mildred。 L。 Batchelder Award for being the most outstanding book published in the U。S。 after being translated。The topic of this book is what most would consider a complex subject。 This picture book discusses death in a way where children will see why it is essenti I read Cry, Heart, But Never Break by Glenn Ringtved as an E-book on Hoopla。 As part of my reading course, I decided to read this book as we studied international children’s literature。 I chose this book because it was awarded the 2017 Mildred。 L。 Batchelder Award for being the most outstanding book published in the U。S。 after being translated。The topic of this book is what most would consider a complex subject。 This picture book discusses death in a way where children will see why it is essential to learn about death。 The author creates Death as a character in the story with whom the children talk and build a relationship。 Death interacts with four scared and sad grandchildren that know death will soon find their grandmother。 Death explains to the children that without death, there would be no life, and without sadness, there would be no joy。 Using dialogue and similes allows this story to be told to young children in a way that will help them understand death and teach them ways to remember those who have passed。 For example, Ringtved says, “Some people say Death’s heart is as dead and black as a piece of coal。 Beneath his inky cloak, Death’s heart is as red as the most beautiful sunset and beats with a great love of life” (14)。 Due to the topic of this book, I would recommend it for students that are in first grade or up。 Teachers could use this book to discuss dialogue, themes, and similes。The illustrator Charlotte Pardi uses beautiful colored drawings to show the relationship between joy and sadness and death and life。I think this book does represent good international literature for children because children from any location can identify with the situations presented in the book。 Young children will sympathize with the kids losing their grandmother in the book。 The details and the illustrations presented in the book are clear and help readers determine a theme。 The illustrations help convey the author's message and enhance the writing。 All the words in the book were in English and made sense, so it was easy to read。 Due to these reasons, I believe that this book is a good example of quality international literature。 。。。more

" Cry , Heart , but never break。 Let your tears of grief and sadness help being new life。" Let your tears of grief and sadness help being new life。" 。。。more

Beautiful album with peaceful text and images。 The resolution comes extremely quickly and I think the story would have benefitted from a few more pages to develop the emotional response of the children。 But all in all it’s a stunning work of art。

This picture book is packed with emotion and understanding, as four children have to deal with the loss of their grandmother。 Death talks to the children and answers their questions, all while teaching them the importance of life and accepting that death must come for everyone。 This book is wonderful for children to learn about death and how to cope with the aftermath, just as Leah and her siblings did。

While death is often something people think of with fear, this book helps to show children that death is part of life。 It shows the sorrow and sadness that children have when Death comes for their grandma。 Death is kind and understanding, and after he spends time with the kids, Death greets grandma like a friend, and grandma does the same。 It helps kids to know that sadness is okay, that eventually they will remember grandma with joy and love, and that the ones we love are always with us。 I boug While death is often something people think of with fear, this book helps to show children that death is part of life。 It shows the sorrow and sadness that children have when Death comes for their grandma。 Death is kind and understanding, and after he spends time with the kids, Death greets grandma like a friend, and grandma does the same。 It helps kids to know that sadness is okay, that eventually they will remember grandma with joy and love, and that the ones we love are always with us。 I bought this for my child when their great grandparents began passing away, and it was good for us to read together。 。。。more

A book for older children that tries to explain the nature of death as juxta positioned between joy and hope。 I would read this book to my 11-year-old and 8-year-old grandsons to explain and prepare for the death of their great grandparents and the inevitable death of us, their grandma and grandpa。

Recently experienced a very terrible loss of my soulmate/best friend/only companion I actually trust, and I kept seeing this book referred to on the Marginalian (formerly Brain Pickings) so I had high hopes that this was going to be a very moving experience on grief and death, and it just fell flat of all of that。 I just felt a bit disappointed and I don’t see why this is so praised and lauded。 I’m glad others are getting so much from it but for me? Ehhh it’s not there。
