Summary

A deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true love。

Emery Blackwood’s life changed forever the night her best friend was found dead and the love of her life, August Salt, was accused of murdering her。 Years later, she is doing what her teenage self swore she never would: living a quiet existence on the misty, remote shores of Saoirse Island and running the family’s business, Blackwood’s Tea Shoppe Herbal Tonics & Tea Leaf Readings。

But when the island, rooted in folklore and magic, begins to show signs of strange happenings, Emery knows that something is coming。 The morning she wakes to find that every single tree on Saoirse has turned color in a single night, August returns for the first time in fourteen years and unearths the past that the town has tried desperately to forget。

August knows he is not welcome on Saiorse, not after the night everything changed。 As a fire raged on at the Salt family orchard, Lily Morgan was found dead in the dark woods, shaking the bedrock of their tight-knit community and branding August a murderer。 When he returns to bury his mother’s ashes, he must confront the people who turned their backs on him and face the one wound from his past that has never healed—Emery。

The town has more than one reason to want August gone, and the emergence of deep betrayals and hidden promises spanning generations threaten to reveal the truth behind Lily’s mysterious death once and for all。

Quite honestly -- I don't think there is anything written by Adrienne Young that I won't read and love。This was an interesting story with a twisty plot line。 I wish the relationship between August and Em had been developed more。 I also wanted more of the "aftermath" when everything came to a head。 Quite honestly -- I don't think there is anything written by Adrienne Young that I won't read and love。This was an interesting story with a twisty plot line。 I wish the relationship between August and Em had been developed more。 I also wanted more of the "aftermath" when everything came to a head。 。。。more

The audiobook was done really well。 The whole time, I kept thinking about how the melancholy way the story was told is reminiscent of If We Were Villains by M。 L。 Rio, which I loved。 This book was not what I thought it would be, honestly but it was also a good story。 Intriguing and mysterious。 The who done it factor had me suspicious if everyone。 I found the ending just a little bit anticlimactic。 But still don’t regret the read。

Young’s writing is quite strong, I just didn’t really connect with the story / characters。 This is one of those “it’s me, not the book” situations, so I’d still recommend it to anyone who is interested!

Considering I have yet to love a book from this author, this was a much more successful book for me。 It still lacked a little bit of spark, but I thought the setting was great and the mystery was intriguing。 I wasn’t in the perfect mood for this when I started to read it though, and I do think I might have enjoyed it more at another time。

Someone else wrote “that was a lot of drama for a few apples” and those are my thoughts exactly。 😂 If you like atmospheric books, you may appreciate this one more than I did。 For me, only the last quarter of the book held my interest。

Though the start felt a tad slow and the ending a bit rushed, overall this book left me speechless。 The imagery—eerie。 The prose—unmatched。 The story—hauntingly beautiful。 Witchy and autumn vibes galore。 And the true mystery to unravel was within the character connections—whether knit or threadbare—and how those connections either broke or emboldened each character。 This was my first Adrienne Young book, and I definitely plan to read more from her in the near future!

DNF @ 26% - I don't need a spell for forgetting - already done。 I was a quarter in and there was a couple of mentions of magic, some heavier mentions about a murder, but mostly it was just 2 characters jib-jabbin about each other-past and present。 This book should have been called People with Feels, with a blurb that says, "An atmospheric town where some dry-toast characters don't have anything better to do with themselves then feel feelings" Total bait and switch。 Literally, where my Witches at DNF @ 26% - I don't need a spell for forgetting - already done。 I was a quarter in and there was a couple of mentions of magic, some heavier mentions about a murder, but mostly it was just 2 characters jib-jabbin about each other-past and present。 This book should have been called People with Feels, with a blurb that says, "An atmospheric town where some dry-toast characters don't have anything better to do with themselves then feel feelings" Total bait and switch。 Literally, where my Witches at?! Rating: 3 and 1/2 ⭐️What's it about: A cold case murder mystery on a spooky magic island with a pinch of romance in the air。 Emery lost her best friend 14 years ago and her lover August was accused of her murder。 He then left the island and her all alone to face the consequences。 When he comes back to bury his mother, old feelings and secrets come to life again。 Did he actually kill Lily? Not for one minute did I think that August is a murderer。 I did have my doubts about Emery, since the book is called Spells for Forgetting, I thought maybe she has forgotten that she killed her best friend in a huff。 Then of course there's this whole council thing, and the fire thing and the Dutch thing。。。 Yeah, so there are several avenues you could explore to find out who the killer is。 Did it come as a surprise at the end? Hmm, no, not really, but then does anything really surprise us anymore on an island with magic? 。。。more

I loved this book。 The eerie small town vibes make this a really atmospheric read。 It’s mysterious and creepy, with multiple POV’s that slowly reveal the secrets of the town。 It had me hooked from start to finish。 It reminded me a lot of Dark And Shallow Lies and The Dead And The Dark (both of which I also rated 5 stars)

Spells of Forgetting was forgettable and underwhelming。 Initially, I thought this would be good。 It gripped me with its magical, atmospheric island and small town mystery。 As the plot progressed and August returns to Saoirse and nothing happens for at least 60% of the book, I became frustrated。 I normally love me some pining characters, but it turns out, too much pining without establishing the core relationship just makes for a mediocre book。 Now we do get flashbacks, but they’re inconsistent Spells of Forgetting was forgettable and underwhelming。 Initially, I thought this would be good。 It gripped me with its magical, atmospheric island and small town mystery。 As the plot progressed and August returns to Saoirse and nothing happens for at least 60% of the book, I became frustrated。 I normally love me some pining characters, but it turns out, too much pining without establishing the core relationship just makes for a mediocre book。 Now we do get flashbacks, but they’re inconsistent at best。 The author also uses multiple points of view: the two primary characters, Emery and August (with their soap opera names), as well as various other secondary characters, these latter chapters being mostly unnecessary。 Also — why, in an allegedly adult book, would one of your two sexy time scenes take place in a flashback when the main characters were teenagers? I am an adult, and graphic sex scenes between teenagers makes me uncomfortable。 Of course they’re doing it, but how pervy is it to read about it?? Ew。 No, thank you。 The magic system was inconsequential to the plot… until it wasn’t。 I found the plot twists unoriginal and easy to guess… especially when the island is supposed to be full of witches, but you might forget that due to how little witchcraft actually transpires。 。。。more

The audiobook performance is stellar。 But the characters are thin, and the author leans heavily on the perspective of outside characters to give the reader the full picture instead of building out growth for the main actors。 Recommended only if you’re listening -

Loved the storytelling in this book。 I did figure out some of the “mysteries” before they were revealed however there was enough questions to keep me intrigued to the end。 A little history of a mysterious island where the residents look after their own in one way or another, all shrouded in magic… what’s not to like?

Kathleen

The writing in this was really atmospheric, but unfortunately the plot and characters fell flat。 Everyone in this story is very local, the plot lacked some finesse, the pacing was odd, and the magic isn’t woven into the story as well as I’d like。 That could also be because I don’t really like mysteries, and that the core of what this was。 Four stars for vibes, 3 for everything else。

Words I would use to describe this book: mystery, romance, cold case, magic, sad and small town。 When I picked this up I don't think I fully understood that。 I really like Adrienne Young, her word flow and storytelling is as talented as VE Schwab and Taylor Jenkins Reed。 But as you might know, mystery, murder and cold cases are not usually for me。 I was anxious for a lot of this book, and overall I found it to be pretty sad。 I wish this story had taken place right after the incident so that we c Words I would use to describe this book: mystery, romance, cold case, magic, sad and small town。 When I picked this up I don't think I fully understood that。 I really like Adrienne Young, her word flow and storytelling is as talented as VE Schwab and Taylor Jenkins Reed。 But as you might know, mystery, murder and cold cases are not usually for me。 I was anxious for a lot of this book, and overall I found it to be pretty sad。 I wish this story had taken place right after the incident so that we could feel the drama in real time。 I recommend you read some other reviews if this sounds interesting to you since this was not for me。CW: child abuse, murder, death, loss of a parent 。。。more

If Practical Magic, Gilmore Girls, and Veronica Mars had a child, it would be this book。 It is so mysterious and cozy, like a rainy day。 The mystery is wrapped in layers of small town intrigue, and the magic is small yet fun。 There were times where the pace felt a tad slow, but overall I loved it。

This book brought me out of my reading slump and pulled me right into it's story within the first chapter。 The mystery and intregue of the story sang my name and called me back to it whenever i tried to put the book down。 I loved trying to figure out what had happened and who was behind everything。 I'm really happy i was able to guess a big part of it。 The hints and foreshadowing were nicely sprinkled throughout the chapters。One of my favourite things about this book was the changing pov's。 Not This book brought me out of my reading slump and pulled me right into it's story within the first chapter。 The mystery and intregue of the story sang my name and called me back to it whenever i tried to put the book down。 I loved trying to figure out what had happened and who was behind everything。 I'm really happy i was able to guess a big part of it。 The hints and foreshadowing were nicely sprinkled throughout the chapters。One of my favourite things about this book was the changing pov's。 Not only between Emery and August, but also between the present and passed, and between the other inhabitants of the island。 The short odd chapters of inhabitants sprinkled throughout the book made the mystery and secrets only more intreguing。 The writing style is a very easy one to read and was able to discribe and create wonderful images。 I'm very glad i gave this book a try and will definitely reccomend it to people!!***SPOILER***One of the things i have been wondering though is why they never did a paternity/dna test on Lily's child。 August was suspected to be the father, but if they'd tested this theory they would have known he wasn't。 Which meant that part of the secret-lovers-theory would have fallen appart。 Maybe the fetus was too small/young to do a test on, but it was large enough for a baby bump to start showing? (Tbh, i have no clue how those tests work and when you can/can't do them)It's something that i couldn't stop thinking about while reading。 Maybe it's just me, but an explenation about why would have been nice。 But it definitely does not hinder my experience and enjoyment of the story itself! 。。。more

3。5Slow-paced, but magical and immersive。 Felt a bit disappointed by the end, wanted some more repercussions for what happened。

Mandy

This book started REALLY slow for me。 Lots of endless descriptions about things that seemed unimportant。 About 120 pages in, it started to get good。 I didn’t want to put it down and wanted to turn pages faster to figure things out。I figured out what happened to Lily before it was revealed。 Other mysteries I suspected, but didn’t guess。 The ending was good, but left me unsatisfied, hence 4 stars instead of 5。

Sarah

A sweet atmospheric little book but I felt like the ending was quite lacklustre, which lost it points。 It was an enjoyable enough read though。

Erica Seibert

The story was so good - if only the writing would have matched it。 :(

There are not many books that I wish I could read again for the first time。 It is the perfect amount of mysterious and cozy which makes it the perfect book for chilly October nights。

*Gave 3。75 stars on StoryGraph*Spells for Forgetting is the most atmospheric and autumnish book I think I've ever read。 I can feel the forest, smell the air, and see the sea。 I love that。 I wish more books made me feel like that。 The story on the other hand was lacking a bit。 I wanted and needed more magic with this one。 It hardly felt like a fantasy book to me。 Also, not really a strong thriller either。 I was able to guess the ending pretty early on。 I'm not sure if that's what the author was g *Gave 3。75 stars on StoryGraph*Spells for Forgetting is the most atmospheric and autumnish book I think I've ever read。 I can feel the forest, smell the air, and see the sea。 I love that。 I wish more books made me feel like that。 The story on the other hand was lacking a bit。 I wanted and needed more magic with this one。 It hardly felt like a fantasy book to me。 Also, not really a strong thriller either。 I was able to guess the ending pretty early on。 I'm not sure if that's what the author was going for or what。。But Emery and August ❤️ I like their relationship。 The ending felt a little cheap, but I did find the very last bit to be a little 😯。 Overall, very easy read。。。 once you get past the first 60 pages or so。 I ended up reading it in one day!ALSO THE COVER IS SO BEAUTIFUL。 I WANT IT WALLPAPERED IN MY HOUSE。 。。。more

I had hoped there was more to this book than there is。 I loved the murder mystery and family loyalty but there were so many character points of view that reading the book was confusing sometimes。 It would have worked better with less points of view because some characters only had one chapter and we only saw them in others。 The one chapter I really liked was the one written from the point of view of the island, it really made it feel like the island had a mind of its own and was an actual charac I had hoped there was more to this book than there is。 I loved the murder mystery and family loyalty but there were so many character points of view that reading the book was confusing sometimes。 It would have worked better with less points of view because some characters only had one chapter and we only saw them in others。 The one chapter I really liked was the one written from the point of view of the island, it really made it feel like the island had a mind of its own and was an actual character。 I am sad the ending was so predictable you saw it coming from a mile away(and I almost never see plot twists coming)。 The last chapter also felt a bit off because at first it was not clear to me that the story had moved to the future instead of maybe the day after the last event on the island, it would have been nice to have had a caption that indicated how much time had passed if any。I also expected there to be more magic than there was since the book is called "Spells for Forgetting" so I am a little disappointed about the lack of magic。 The book was also very long there were 60 chapters which made it feel like a book with 500 pages instead of the 350 pages it has。 I did really enjoy the writing style in the book the writer really knows how to paint a spooky atmosphere on a remote island but the amount of secrets everyone had made the story aspect quite confusing。 Overall a nice read but I would have loved more magic since the title of the book suggests it is a book centered around magic。 。。。more

Wow, this was great。 I so wish Goodreads offered an option for half ratings。 This is definitely more like a 4。25 or 4。5 star read。 It has such a slow start that I stopped and started it about eight times over the last month。 By about the 33% mark, however, I was all in。 The latter half of the book was incredibly romantic, angsty, and suspenseful。 All things I love。 I have to say, the multiple POVs in this never quite jived for me。 I think the story would be improved by sticking to August and Eme Wow, this was great。 I so wish Goodreads offered an option for half ratings。 This is definitely more like a 4。25 or 4。5 star read。 It has such a slow start that I stopped and started it about eight times over the last month。 By about the 33% mark, however, I was all in。 The latter half of the book was incredibly romantic, angsty, and suspenseful。 All things I love。 I have to say, the multiple POVs in this never quite jived for me。 I think the story would be improved by sticking to August and Emery, our hero and heroine, as the narrators。 Save for the single chapter told from the island’s perspective, which was wonderfully atmospheric and chilling, the handful of chapters told from the POV of Leoda, Dutch, and other side characters didn’t add much to the story。This is peak spooky season reading。 I highly recommend it。 Thanks to Ani for being the one to suggest it to me! 。。。more
