Summary

Ideal for personal reading, public worship, in-depth study, and Scripture memorization, the ESV is an essentially literal translation of the Bible in contemporary English。

The English Standard Version stands in the classic stream of essentially literal Bible translations that began nearly five hundred years ago。 The first translation in this classic stream was William Tyndale’s New Testament of 1526。 The Tyndale legacy was carried forward by the King James Version of 1611 (KJV), by the American Standard Version of 1901 (ASV), and by the Revised Standard Version of 1952 and 1971 (RSV)。 The English Standard Version (ESV) follows in this tradition, where accuracy, simplicity, dignity, and beauty of language have always been the standard。

With this classic translation legacy as the starting place, every word and phrase has been compared and weighed against the original languages for accuracy, precision, and literary excellence。 More than one hundred people have been involved on the translation team, including the fourteen-member Translation Oversight Committee, over fifty Translation Review Scholars, and more than fifty members of the ESV Advisory Council。 The publishing team represents many denominations and countries, and is committed to the authority, inerrancy, and sufficiency of the Bible as the Word of God。

unrealistic and unreasonable

My church uses the ESV but I prefer the NASB because the translators capitalized every reference to God, including pronouns。

Very well put together for the number of contributors involved (Thirty-five of them, give or take, transcribing for the main author)。 Gripping opening, compelling climax, uplifting ending, and cohesive throughout。 You’ll fall in love with the main character, I find that even when I put it down I can’t stop thinking about him。I recommend anyone read this book。 I personally try my best to give the whole thing a yearly re-read。

Words are large enough to make it easy to read。 The embossing is gorgeous!

Even if this wasn’t God’s word, and something we should take seriously。 It’s still the greatest book ever written。 Somehow they get a ton of prophecies correct。 It agrees with all of history。 Many of the people in the book actually existed。 Some of the greatest short story’s ever inside a big book。 It literally has everything。 And if you do not enjoy it then you’re either incredibly stupid, or you just don’t want to admit that the Christian’s actually like something that makes sense。

Of course, it is 5-stars; it is the Bible! The content is the foundation of our faith in the One who brings eternal life!Beyond that obvious element, I want to comment on this particular edition。 I liked this edition for several reasons。 This is an ideal edition for general reading。 It is not designed for in-depth study of specific verses。 There are no verse numbers, no commentary, no concordance, no notes and no cross-references。 There was nothing to get in the way of reading a full book or a full flow of thought of the author。Of course these other elements are very valuable for reference and for detailed study。 But leaving these out greatly aided my effort to get the meaning of larger portions of scripture and to see the broader themes and flow of thought of the authors。 I read full paragraphs, following the author's line of argument or narrative, without any distractions of numbers, notes or other markings。This was also my first time to use the English Standard Version, and think it is a great translation, holding true to the original words closely, much like the New American Standard Bible。If you are wanting an edition for your general reading, I recommend this。 If you are wanting to do an in-depth study of a book of the Bible, I suggest reading that book of the Bible using this edition to get the overall flow of thought without any literary distractions。 Then, go to a study Bible for all the study and reference aids to dive deep。I'm glad to have this book on my shelf。 。。。more

I have now read the is maybe a few dozen times since it was gifted to me in 2015。 It’s been a cool experience to just read with none of the numbering or Notes or commentary。

okay i didn’t actually read this but i needed a placeholder for all the fan fiction i’ve been secretly reading and not putting on goodreads x

Coco 🤍

Could’ve been good but the fandom is literally so toxic like they ruined the WHOLE book for me😥Also, they just kill him off in the end? That was a really bad ending, like there should’ve at least been a sequel or something bc him dying was not necessary for the plot at all🙄🤚

By far, the greatest “book” ever written。 The Bible is actually a collection of books, a library, if you will。 You don’t read the Bible, the Bible reads you。 No other book has had a greater impact on history or on my life, than the Bible。

FollowtheEnergy

Just another story told。 When you read the bible, one wonders why is it one of the most read books in the world? Do we like stories? I recommend reading the books of Spinoza as he explains the bible through the less of one-ness/consciousness。
