Mixed emotions on this one。 I enjoyed and disliked different aspects of each character and the story as a whole was written from an interesting perspective, one I wasn’t expecting。 Looking forward to seeing the movie!

Totally forgot to keep goodreads UTD on this book - whoopsies。 I loved the premise of the plot honestly; the way it’s structured is interesting and the overall plot is a spin on your traditional “forbidden love” + LGBT trope。 It could’ve amounted to so much more。 It continuously fell short and the characters never ceased to annoyed me (except Julia but she’s a side character so does that even count?)。 The end tied everything up and kept it all neat and tidy - cool。 Not a plus for me personally, Totally forgot to keep goodreads UTD on this book - whoopsies。 I loved the premise of the plot honestly; the way it’s structured is interesting and the overall plot is a spin on your traditional “forbidden love” + LGBT trope。 It could’ve amounted to so much more。 It continuously fell short and the characters never ceased to annoyed me (except Julia but she’s a side character so does that even count?)。 The end tied everything up and kept it all neat and tidy - cool。 Not a plus for me personally, but it at least gave me some satisfaction and hope for growth for our characters。 My biggest gripe was that none of the three major characters were likable??? Patrick’s POV sections was more enjoyable than Marion’s because of this reason。 Marion was terribly annoying from page one; she had slim moments where she wasn’t dumb as all get out but she never redeemed herself in my eyes。 The “plot twist” wasn’t even a big 😧 moment because of this too。 I think the reason why Patrick’s POV was favored is because we got to see more of Tom and his personality。 Tom’s not likable in any way and is overall a flat character。 It was annoying to see two people’s lives fall apart because of their own inadequacies while being told it’s because of “love” - nah, it was chosen ignorance。 Repeated chosen ignorance。 Perhaps some naivety, but it really felt like purposeful blindness the entire time。 I’m not going to lie: Marion has ZERO reason to even LIKE Tom in the first place, let alone be in love with him。 At least give us SOMETHING to understand our main character’s desires。 She literally molded her entire life around him because she thought he was… cute… okay?I will say, many people I’ve heard about this book from told me I should be expected to cry? I don’t think I even really got sad if I’m honest。 Perhaps for Patrick…but…not really? Honestly, I was most sad over the fact that MARION DOESN’T KNOW SHES GAY (I mean she IS lesbian, right? C’mon, it’s the only reason that explains her idiotic behavior throughout)。 。。。more

I don’t really know what to think of this book。 The story in itself is interesting but I found the book very boring… everything goes so slowly it feels like nothing is happening

moony

literally loved it, everything is perfect in this book

(4。5 stars) honestly a really beautiful, touching, book but soooo slow to read。 I’m not sure what it was that made it hard to get into, but I really did have to force myself to read it sometimes。 I’d get into one narrator and then it would switch POVs and it would take me a while to re-adjust。 The story was so heartbreaking though I almost cried putting the book down !!!

tay 🥸

heartbreakingly beautiful。

This was meant to be a sad book, which I normally like, but the characters didn’t seem fully developed。 I didn’t feel a super deep connection to any character as we didn’t hear much about their inner selves or the relationships between them。 Felt VERY surface level。 I did read the book knowing the movie will come out Oct。 21。 I’ll still go see the movie, but I wish the book gave more。

3。5*I've heard a lot about this book and it's been in the media a lot right now because it's also going to be turned into a movie。I enjoyed reading it from both Marion and Patrick's perspectives however I do wish that we could have heard from Tom himself。 I know that was kind of the point; they were both in love with Tom, he was always a silent kind of guy and he remained silent in the telling of the story。 However, I really wanted to know what compelled him to continue staying with Marion after 3。5*I've heard a lot about this book and it's been in the media a lot right now because it's also going to be turned into a movie。I enjoyed reading it from both Marion and Patrick's perspectives however I do wish that we could have heard from Tom himself。 I know that was kind of the point; they were both in love with Tom, he was always a silent kind of guy and he remained silent in the telling of the story。 However, I really wanted to know what compelled him to continue staying with Marion after Patrick ended up going to jail。Actually I wish that the time frame between Patrick going to jail and getting his strokes and ending up at their home would have been explained。 What happened in that immense gap? 。。。more

How can one person destroy the lives of three? It was really hard to sympathise with Marion。 I think that deep down she always knew that Tom was homosexual and probably just didn't want to understand what Sylvie was telling her when she said that Tom 'wasn't like that' and yet she decided to marry him and live that fake marriage。 I know that the '50s were different times but her decisions ‘For a policeman, you’re very romantic。’‘For an artist, you’re very afraid,’ he said。 This was heartbreaking! The book was sad and the movie is gonna break me probably 🫠

I truly love this book and am very attached to it。 It depicts a love story but also a gay story in the 1950’s which seems impossible at the time because you are being judged for who you love and punished for it。 Also very attached to the characters and their individual relationship with Tom。 But we perfectly know the three of them are not meant to get along very well。 The end made me shiver, so poignant。 I cried。 How I love how Marion even after the fact that Patrick stole the one she loved, con I truly love this book and am very attached to it。 It depicts a love story but also a gay story in the 1950’s which seems impossible at the time because you are being judged for who you love and punished for it。 Also very attached to the characters and their individual relationship with Tom。 But we perfectly know the three of them are not meant to get along very well。 The end made me shiver, so poignant。 I cried。 How I love how Marion even after the fact that Patrick stole the one she loved, continued to be there for him and cared for him as a friend。 Patrick’s ill state also appears as a kind of punishment。 As what they called being an « inverted » They all three deserved better。I loved the writing and how by changing chapters you change your point of view in the story, to be able to live it from Tom’s point of view but also Marion’s one and finally Patrick’s one。 。。。more

Mixed feeling about this book, read it because it’s said to be lgbtq+ fiction but the author making the Marion the women who outed a gay man in the 50s to the authorities have the final word at the end doesn’t sit right with me。 Marion was extremely naive & a horrible person, at the end of this book I feel like she never loved Tom but was in love with the idea that she built up of who she thought Tom was。 Unfortunately for Patrick, he was the only one who seemed to get the short end of the stick Mixed feeling about this book, read it because it’s said to be lgbtq+ fiction but the author making the Marion the women who outed a gay man in the 50s to the authorities have the final word at the end doesn’t sit right with me。 Marion was extremely naive & a horrible person, at the end of this book I feel like she never loved Tom but was in love with the idea that she built up of who she thought Tom was。 Unfortunately for Patrick, he was the only one who seemed to get the short end of the stick he lost everything and not only that he becomes permanently disabled。 Even after Tom never speaks to him again all Patrick ever wants was Tom to be there with him。 Have no clue how these two people fall in love with tom especially since it seems he’s selfish and only puts himself first before the other two。 While this book was beautifully written it felt like this book was written by a straight women who’s target audience are other straight women。 。。。more

4。5 stars :)) not the best book ever, but definitely above average!!

When Patrick was narrating the book, it was wonderful, life changing, incredible, chic。 When Marion was narrating the book… rotten。 She is one of my least favorite book characters of all time。 Awful person。 Rotten。 The ending???? It was so abrupt, it felt like the author just realized her final draft was overdue and sent what she had。 Not okay。

Incredibly sad book in the best way possible? I thoroughly enjoyed this and it helped to picture Harry Styles constantly :)

4。4 this book honestly broke me in the best way possible, as it is one of those books- devastating and tragic, but a beautiful tale。 there are some unanswered questions which i need the answers to, but overall this was a very well written book and i can’t wait to watch the movie, especially because harry is gonna be in it (the reason i read this book in the first place) but i did surprisingly ended up loving the book and yeah, i did cry a few times while reading it and the movie is just going to 4。4 this book honestly broke me in the best way possible, as it is one of those books- devastating and tragic, but a beautiful tale。 there are some unanswered questions which i need the answers to, but overall this was a very well written book and i can’t wait to watch the movie, especially because harry is gonna be in it (the reason i read this book in the first place) but i did surprisingly ended up loving the book and yeah, i did cry a few times while reading it and the movie is just going to completely destroy me。 can’t wait😃👍 。。。more

Beautifully written, truly sad。 I connected with even side characters, I enjoyed this book。 The only bad thing was there was times I had to set down the book because I was so annoyed by a character。

Bella Rivas

Tom and Patrick obviously deserved better。 I hate Marion。 Read this book in one sitting so I need some time to collect my thoughts。

4。5 STARS! This book was so beautifully written, Bethan Roberts is so unbelievably talented。 But this story caused me so much emotional pain and anguish that I almost couldn’t read it。 What an experience, I can’t wait to see how the movie compares to this amazing book!
