Summary

The Band of the Hawk may have been the most formidable band of fighters around, but when matched up against an army of abyssal monstrosities, earthly fighting skills don t amount to a hill of beans。 The Hawks tortured and mutilated former leader, Griffith, has used the accursed Crimson Behelit to open the gates to a shadowy realm of unspeakable horrors, the realm of the demon lords of the Godhand, who are willing to transform Griffith into a being of terrible power and majesty as long as Griffith is willing to give up his former command as sacrifices in the Invocation of Doom。 But nobody takes down the Hawks without a fight, and their berserker champion, Guts, will take on anything Hell can throw at him in order to save his lover, Casca, from the sordid violations that only Hell can offer。"

Many trigger warnings for this volume! This is a very graphic portrayal of some horrific things that are a step further than even most Berserk volumes so just prepare yourself。

(Vols 9-13)Oof this is pretty impossible to rate, for a number of reasons。 This series is great in almost all aspects (the art continues to be stunning - mandatory to say in all reviews - and the story is still gripping) but I felt that there were two volumes here that sticked out。 Vol 11 felt a bit boring at points, since we're presented to an apostle whose kink is sex and violence (which doesn't really add anything to the story and only feels gratuitous, especially since the bit of worldbuildi (Vols 9-13)Oof this is pretty impossible to rate, for a number of reasons。 This series is great in almost all aspects (the art continues to be stunning - mandatory to say in all reviews - and the story is still gripping) but I felt that there were two volumes here that sticked out。 Vol 11 felt a bit boring at points, since we're presented to an apostle whose kink is sex and violence (which doesn't really add anything to the story and only feels gratuitous, especially since the bit of worldbuilding there was already addressed with Zodd, and is given much more depth in the Eclipse, just a couple of issues later)。 There's an "almost-rape" scene with Casca (again) which is never mentioned afterwards, because by now she should be used to be assaulted, right? In any case, if I had to sum it up in one word, I'd just say this volume felt unnecessary。Volume 13 is a whole different story。 It was not unnecessary at all, and we get some truly awesome Lovecraftian hellish scenes, with the Godhand showing up for a disturbing unilateral massacre。 But the rape, man。 It looked like porn, designed to turn on teenage boys, and I couldn't help feeling bothered with the way it was handled。 I have complained about Casca's treatment before, but let me clarify: I don't have a problem seeing her naked - or might as well stop reading :') - and as a quick example, I loved Vol 9, which has tons sex scenes between her and Guts。 Sure, one could argue that it was also gratuitous, but it served a clear purpose to the growth of both characters。 Especially in the Wounds arc, where they both get to know each other better and try to work out through their own traumatic experiences, I distinctly thought it was one of the (if not the) most emotionally mature arc, even having tender parts where they solidify their relationship。 And as for rape, you could say the fact that it's so frequent is part of the worldbuilding, but if there's sexual assault in pretty much every issue, it becomes trivialized。 That's the lesser problem though。 Another example here is Gut's case - the actual rape scene took literally one panel, and not only it was not sexualized at all (the focus is on the rapist's giant body, looming over Guts tiny body) but it was also drawn in a horrifying way, portraying it as a serious and grave scene。 This one panel has more impact than the entire issue with Casca, where we see her naked again from a ton of different erotic angles。 I could honestly only see pain in Guts eyes (as he's forced to watch) and not in the actual person who's suffering an unspeakable violation by a person she used to trust, and it makes me sad that now that she was finally slightly well-rounded (showing some minimal growth past the two male MCs) Miura doesn't know what to do with her anymore and basically "kills" the character, and insults her by giving her the good old "amnesia-storyline" treatment afterwards。 It seems like it only serves to advance Guts storyline (watching the whole Band of the Hawks get gruesomely murdered was not enough? Killing Casca would have been better than this, and served exactly the same purpose)。 And I kind of hope they won't bring her back as an actual character, since I don't trust Miura to treat her with respect, at this point。 And yes, I know that this was written in the 90's, but I'm also currently reading a book from the 1870's with a female MC that gets much more empowerement than here, so it's harder to forgive it here。 So yeah, that issue just left the sourest taste in my mouth, which is a damn shame, as basically everything else on all other volumes is so spetacular。Fuck that issue。 And fuck Griffith。 (On a second thought, do NOT fuck Griffith)。 。。。more

Absolutely Fantastic in every way。

MAJOR CONTENT WARNING FOR DISCUSSION OF SEXUAL ASSAULTI think every fan of Berserk has to find a way to accept or get past the sexual assault。 This manga contains some of the best handling of the subject like in Guts and Casca's relationship as they overcome their shared childhood trauma, and a lot of scenes that feel really gross and exploitative like the stuff with Wyald。 But where Wyald feels so unimportant that his issues feel worse because of how unnecessary they are, the same can't be said MAJOR CONTENT WARNING FOR DISCUSSION OF SEXUAL ASSAULTI think every fan of Berserk has to find a way to accept or get past the sexual assault。 This manga contains some of the best handling of the subject like in Guts and Casca's relationship as they overcome their shared childhood trauma, and a lot of scenes that feel really gross and exploitative like the stuff with Wyald。 But where Wyald feels so unimportant that his issues feel worse because of how unnecessary they are, the same can't be said for the first scene with Femto, which is absolutely crucial and almost unbearable to read。 Can I defend the inclusion of an entire issue worth of excruciating images of a woman being brutally raped? Even if we say that it's framed in a non-titillating way (and I'm not sure we can), is that ever justified and does it not reduce her to the trope of fridging for the hero's rage? I don't know。 I can say that it's an effectively horrific moment, perhaps the most horrific thing that could happen for these characters, and it's deeply unpleasant to read, and if it feels like it's meant to be framed in a sexualizing way, that only makes it feel more vile and upsetting。 Everything around that scene is the best Berserk has ever been, a descent into complete nightmare interiority, packed with gut-wrenching emotional beats。 The version I read included the no-longer-canon issue 83, but I was glad I read it because even if the lore will be changed later, it has some of Miura's most gorgeous art, recalling for me the sense of scale and impossibility as Kirby's best compositions in classic Fantastic Four。 Will Berserk ever top this after the Golden Age? I don't know。 I finished the arc in the next volume, but I think I'm going to take a break before moving into Lost Children, because this is a lot。 Just a totally overwhelming ending。 And I've already seen this adapted twice before! I can't imagine reading this without having some idea of how it goes down。 Not sure I could have gotten through it。 。。。more
