Summary

It is the year Universal Century 0079, in a space colony the Earth Federation is storing and testing a new piloted robot for use in the battle against the Principality of Zeon。 The experimental RX-78 Gundam mobile suit is scheduled to be transported to Federation command in Jaburo, deep within the Brazilian jungles。 Unfortunatley, before the transporter would arrive, the Federation would come under attack from Zeon。 With few resources available against the Zeon's most mobile mechs, Federation forces strike back using their new weapon, the mobile suit Gundam。

Caught in the crossfire is a young teen named Amuro Ray。 Not willing to see innocent people die like this, Amuro crawls into the cockpit of the closest machine around him。 Whether it be a tank, jeep or jet, he was going to use it to help stop this slaughter。 And what he happened to slide into was another Gundam。 Having never operated a machine like this, what are the chances he can do anything to repel an experienced squad of mech-piloting invaders?

Volume 1 includes an essay from Hideaki Anno, director of the hit anime Neon Genesis Evengelion。

Color pages from Yas。

And an essay from Kadokawa Publishing Executive Shinichiro Inoue。

Recommendation: A fairly good manga adaptation that diverges from the original anime series about a bunch of refugees trying to survive in the midst of a war between Earth and its orbital colonies。

I am tempted to give it 2 stars but I really do love Gundam。 I am not sure how they were able to make such a great concept so bland。 I don't know if it is just a matter of a poor translation but the dialogue just seems off -- like the characters are not really there and reacting to what's in front of them。 Everything else is great。 I am especially pleased that the art was able to depict large amounts of debris and destruction without it being confusing。 I am tempted to give it 2 stars but I really do love Gundam。 I am not sure how they were able to make such a great concept so bland。 I don't know if it is just a matter of a poor translation but the dialogue just seems off -- like the characters are not really there and reacting to what's in front of them。 Everything else is great。 I am especially pleased that the art was able to depict large amounts of debris and destruction without it being confusing。 。。。more

A disastrous attack on a space station leaves a teenager pilotting a new experimental gundam suit。 It's an absolutely gorgeous manga, with a pacing that takes some getting used to (for me, at least)。 I enjoyed the story a lot, but it says something that the pinnacle of narrative engagement for me was the initial infodump at the start of the story, where the history behind this particular sci-fi future unfolds。 For the rest of the book, the pacing is very moment by moment, particularly for the ac A disastrous attack on a space station leaves a teenager pilotting a new experimental gundam suit。 It's an absolutely gorgeous manga, with a pacing that takes some getting used to (for me, at least)。 I enjoyed the story a lot, but it says something that the pinnacle of narrative engagement for me was the initial infodump at the start of the story, where the history behind this particular sci-fi future unfolds。 For the rest of the book, the pacing is very moment by moment, particularly for the action scenes。 There are a lot of silent panels where Yasuhiko lets the visuals tell the story, as the inhabitants of the space station scramble--not to win the day, but to defend themselves long enough for a portion of the civilians to escape。 I found myself reading it too quickly, to the point where I had trouble following more than the broad tail of the story。 That's not Yasuhiko's fault at all; it's just a reflection on my part that there are many kinds of visual literacy, and I'm still developing this one。 I look forward to checking out the next volume at some point。 。。。more

As somebody who is new to the Gundam franchise and has not watched any of the anime, I must say this book felt like the perfect starting point for anyone wishing to get into it。 The book's biggest strength, without a doubt, is the artwork。 The art is absolutely gorgeous, even though all the characters are human, the first time you see the main Mobile Suit, the perspective along with the detailing and backgrounds really give them an almost otherworldly feel。 The big splash pages in space also add As somebody who is new to the Gundam franchise and has not watched any of the anime, I must say this book felt like the perfect starting point for anyone wishing to get into it。 The book's biggest strength, without a doubt, is the artwork。 The art is absolutely gorgeous, even though all the characters are human, the first time you see the main Mobile Suit, the perspective along with the detailing and backgrounds really give them an almost otherworldly feel。 The big splash pages in space also add to the atmosphere and tone the book sets that, while space and the grandiose structures of the buildings are to be admired, this is a very dangerous place。 As for the plot, we follow a boy named Amuro and his friends as they become wrapped up in a top secret mission to earth, following their journey as they have to step up in order to fend off the Principality of Zeon's ace pilot Char - the opposing faction to the Earth Federation。 One thing the book does a very good job of, is that neither the Federation or Zeon are in the right。 Both sides are equally as bad as each other, but there are nonetheless good people, or people just trying to survive, in both。 This kind of surprised me given how black and white Manga can be sometimes when it comes to protagonists vs antagonists in their morality。 It was a little jarring at first, however I found myself appreciating this fact more as the book went on。 This definitely surprised me, and needless to say, I can't wait to read more! 。。。more

8。5/10It’s funny, this feels like (and really is) a shinier and more modern version of a classic anime。 Almost got Saturday morning cartoon vibes。 And I love it。 I love the design of the RX-78-02 and the big spaceships。 I hope a tight plot character driven plot develops。

I liked it, though about a chapter in I realized that I've already read this one and had forgotten。 It's a good introduction to Gundam (which is notorious for having so many possible starting points that it's hard to know where to start), but it's important to keep in mind that even though the manga came out in 2015, it's written in a similar style to manga from the 80s。 This means it's pretty text heavy (not as much as the Ghost in the Shell manga from the same era, but similar) and the story s I liked it, though about a chapter in I realized that I've already read this one and had forgotten。 It's a good introduction to Gundam (which is notorious for having so many possible starting points that it's hard to know where to start), but it's important to keep in mind that even though the manga came out in 2015, it's written in a similar style to manga from the 80s。 This means it's pretty text heavy (not as much as the Ghost in the Shell manga from the same era, but similar) and the story structure might feel a little basic。 I'm excited to read more though and see where the story goes since all of my Gundam knowledge comes from listening to my brother talk about it。 。。。more

This is going to be a quick one。 I liked the designs of the characters and especially the Gundam。 The art was good but was also a chaotic mess at times。 The story wasn't the easiest to keep track of。 I expect the intended audience was people who were already Gundam fans instead of someone dipping their toe in the pool for the first time。 I liked it but I wanted to like it more than I did。 This is going to be a quick one。 I liked the designs of the characters and especially the Gundam。 The art was good but was also a chaotic mess at times。 The story wasn't the easiest to keep track of。 I expect the intended audience was people who were already Gundam fans instead of someone dipping their toe in the pool for the first time。 I liked it but I wanted to like it more than I did。 。。。more

A must read introduction to the true heroes of the gundam universe - the zaku units。 Sadly we only see their green selves in a few of the coloured pages, but that is enough to covert even the biggest Earth Fed-heads to the beuty of mass-produced mobile suits。This is also a good read if you want to see a space colony cylinder get infiltrated and destroyed like the start of 90% of all gundam media - and you know that is exactly what I do want to see :)Amaro is still a little shit head, but i was p A must read introduction to the true heroes of the gundam universe - the zaku units。 Sadly we only see their green selves in a few of the coloured pages, but that is enough to covert even the biggest Earth Fed-heads to the beuty of mass-produced mobile suits。This is also a good read if you want to see a space colony cylinder get infiltrated and destroyed like the start of 90% of all gundam media - and you know that is exactly what I do want to see :)Amaro is still a little shit head, but i was pleasantly surprised to find he was not in this too much at all as it progressed。 Char still rules though。Four red comets out of five 。。。more

I'm glad I decided to pick this up after a recommendation from my friend AJ and the descriptions of it on the Gundam subreddit。I recently watched the original series from '79 and this does a great job fleshing out while also sharpening the story from the anime。 And the art is just fantastic! Can't wait to pick up the next volume and continue the adventures of the Trojan Horse on Earth。 I'm glad I decided to pick this up after a recommendation from my friend AJ and the descriptions of it on the Gundam subreddit。I recently watched the original series from '79 and this does a great job fleshing out while also sharpening the story from the anime。 And the art is just fantastic! Can't wait to pick up the next volume and continue the adventures of the Trojan Horse on Earth。 。。。more

Dull plot, uninteresting characters, weak lettering, poor translation。 The art is serviceable for the most part and the Gundam fights are alright but overall this was quite the slog。

What a beautiful book。 The story is a manga adaptation of the anime (I think? - I'm not sure what came first。。。) and the presentation is gorgeous。 A hardcover volume with slick pages and color plates that make the package feel very luxurious。 Certainly worth picking up if you are a Gundam fan。 What a beautiful book。 The story is a manga adaptation of the anime (I think? - I'm not sure what came first。。。) and the presentation is gorgeous。 A hardcover volume with slick pages and color plates that make the package feel very luxurious。 Certainly worth picking up if you are a Gundam fan。 。。。more

My husband loves Mobile Suit Gundam so I decided to pick this up。 I enjoyed the story and the artwork, and I always appreciate a complex antagonist。

If the story had to be told again it had to be done big。 They picked the right team for the task, as the results clearly show。 As great as the very best of the Gundam world。

Tyler Busha

Great old school comic book。 The plot is simplistic, but I get the impression this is due to the era this is from。 (This is also from someone who reads very little manga at all。) Solid art, and the colorized sections are really cool -- I would have loved to have had the entire volume colorized。

3。5 starsMy first Gundam book。 I did really enjoy it, especially after reading Pure Invention and learning of the birth of the series。 Sometimes it was hard to keep the characters straight, because the action was so intense。

I really enjoyed this。 I remember watching this show as a kid。 It was my first true exposure to anime and I just recently started the models and having fun with those so once I had the opportunity to read the manga I snatched it up。 The first volume is amazing and makes me want to rewatch the anime。 Thankfully they just recently appeared on Netflix。

The presentation of this graphic novel was excellent。 However, I found the art and story fairly sparse at best and indecipherable at worst。 It was very difficult to follow the action。 Lots of jumps between panels and scenes, and very minimal design that could let me see who was who and what was going on, especially in the space scenes。 It was pretty disappointing in many ways。 2 stars because the book looks and feels excellent to hold, and it was a quick enough read that I didn't feel like I was The presentation of this graphic novel was excellent。 However, I found the art and story fairly sparse at best and indecipherable at worst。 It was very difficult to follow the action。 Lots of jumps between panels and scenes, and very minimal design that could let me see who was who and what was going on, especially in the space scenes。 It was pretty disappointing in many ways。 2 stars because the book looks and feels excellent to hold, and it was a quick enough read that I didn't feel like I wasted my time。 Bonus negative points for the essay at the end that was a big ol' "Kids these days don't know how good the olden days were" kind of thing。 It was really。。。 I dunno。 Gross, I guess。 It felt very toxic。 So yeah, not a big fan of this, and won't continue with the rest。 Maybe will check out the old anime, because I want to get into and understand this world。 。。。more

This is one of the classics for a reason。 For years I wanted to see a complete edition brought to the states and when Vertical brought it over I could not have been more excited。 The art by creator Yaz is some of the best I've seen and the way he adds touches of humanity to people like how dirty is the first time we see Amuro make him a master as conveying character just with images。Even how he draws the various mobile suits is amazing, I was a little hesitant about that because mecha can be VER This is one of the classics for a reason。 For years I wanted to see a complete edition brought to the states and when Vertical brought it over I could not have been more excited。 The art by creator Yaz is some of the best I've seen and the way he adds touches of humanity to people like how dirty is the first time we see Amuro make him a master as conveying character just with images。Even how he draws the various mobile suits is amazing, I was a little hesitant about that because mecha can be VERY hard to draw for people who are not used to it but he does a stellar job。If there is one thing to point out this is also ONE OF THE HIGHEST quality manga I own, printed on magazine paper and hardcover it makes my various Shoene Jump volumes look like shit。 It's also contains various essays by creators and the like sharing their love of the franchise and seeing them talk about Yaz gives you such a sense of his skill level。 Like Even the mangaka team Clamp love his style and the first volume has an essay from Hideki Anno。A classic in every sense of the word。 Check it out as soon as you can。 。。。more

gritty reboot - not that I know anything about the original, which is apparently quite grim already。 Very stylish, making them seem like appalling weapons rather than dayglo toys。 Version I read had lots of typos and bad lettering choices。

This is a beautiful edition of the original Gundam series。 which has had a fathomless ripple effect on science fiction since its first publication。 As someone who caught bits and pieces of the anime when I was very young, it was an amazing feeling to read this first installment and experience nostalgia I didn’t realize I had。 If you’ve ever been a fan of the series or one of the AUs, I think you’ll find this manga extremely rewarding。

A great reimagining of the first Gundam series。 Art is very nice and the story is great so far。 It doesn’t shy from the horrors of war, especially with the effects of massive weapons of mass destruction。 If you have no experience with Gundam or just wanted to revisit the first series with a fresh view, this series is recommended。

This manga is a spectacular retelling of 0079。 The color pages are used with purpose and are absolutely gorgeous, and the writing is on point if clunky at times due to translation。 Ultimately this manga does a perfect job of translating the epic space opera of the original anime to the page in a way that previously only existed in my rose tinted memories。

Growing up in the 90's Gundam was mostly "Gundam Wing" and then later "G Gundam" and then much later Seed Gundam and so on。 I never got into Gundam the original series because by then it was very outdated and it was a lot darker/political than I was looking for。 Especially coming from the over the top ridiculous G Gundam。 But now that they released these Manga which are a retelling of the original series I had to give it a go。 I AM SO GLAD I DID。 This series takes no time getting to the exciting Growing up in the 90's Gundam was mostly "Gundam Wing" and then later "G Gundam" and then much later Seed Gundam and so on。 I never got into Gundam the original series because by then it was very outdated and it was a lot darker/political than I was looking for。 Especially coming from the over the top ridiculous G Gundam。 But now that they released these Manga which are a retelling of the original series I had to give it a go。 I AM SO GLAD I DID。 This series takes no time getting to the exciting and fucked up world of Gundam。 You're introduced to Amuro, a 15 year old teenager just living his normal peaceful life but soon as the Zeon scum (Basically the empire if thinking star wars) comes down and attacks he is forced to man up and get inside "The Gundam" which at that time there is only one。 Will he survive? And that's what works so well。 The fact it feels like a race against time with so much happening so quick without feeling like we're skipping things。 War is messy and screwed up and the fight between the Federation is dirty and exciting。 Amuro fight against Zeon, especially Char (One of the major figures in the Zeon army) is exciting and fun。 Mostly due to how charming and strong Char is。 The fights are great。 The scenery is wonderful。 This is all due to the AMAZING art。 This is some of the BEST I've ever seen in manga or comics。 Easy to follow, brutal, and the scale is SO good。 I can't get over how good this looks。 Helps the style they release these in are hardcover and so wonderful to hold。 So yeah I can gush about this series for a long time but this left me with a very strong first impression。 Will be picking up more。 。。。more
