Summary

A 50th-anniversary Deluxe Edition of the incomparable 20th-century masterpiece of satire and fantasy, in a newly revised version of the acclaimed Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, made from the complete and unabridged Russian text。

Nothing in the whole of literature compares with The Master and Margarita。 One spring afternoon, the Devil, trailing fire and chaos in his wake, weaves himself out of the shadows and into Moscow。 Mikhail Bulgakov’s fantastical, funny, and devastating satire of Soviet life combines two distinct yet interwoven parts, one set in contemporary Moscow, the other in ancient Jerusalem, each brimming with historical, imaginary, frightful, and wonderful characters。 Written during the darkest days of Stalin’s reign, and finally published in 1966 and 1967, The Master and Margarita became a literary phenomenon, signaling artistic and spiritual freedom for Russians everywhere。

Do not finish the book hoping for two things like I did。The book begins with a fascinating retelling of the crucifixion of Christ from the vantage point of Pontius Pilate。 It does finally pick this story back up, but it never completes it with anything close to matching its beginning。 I felt like I was Margarita by the end of the book, wasting my precious time duped by a seeming masterpiece。The book never illuminates the Soviet or demonic society with anything insightful or interesting。 Both the Do not finish the book hoping for two things like I did。The book begins with a fascinating retelling of the crucifixion of Christ from the vantage point of Pontius Pilate。 It does finally pick this story back up, but it never completes it with anything close to matching its beginning。 I felt like I was Margarita by the end of the book, wasting my precious time duped by a seeming masterpiece。The book never illuminates the Soviet or demonic society with anything insightful or interesting。 Both the Soviets and demons just run around mechanically doing the same things over and over again: the Soviets demanding the proper papers and the demons causing nudity, death and destruction。If I had it all over to do again, I would neither start nor finish this book。 I feel duped into hours of suspenseful hope that my curiosity and interest would be satisfied with artistic excellence。 。。。more

I get that it’s a classic and the story is cool but holy shit the writing (or translation) is so bad I was mentally checked out for the final third of the book

Bulgakov is a complete surprise — a pleasant one。 Part I began slowly but picked up and flowed right to the end。 There was all the possibility of where the story could go, particularly for someone coming off of reading Goethe’s Faust。 Part II was harder to get back into but in so many ways was the original resolve of Bulgakov’s Faustian pact。 It is so hard to unravel what I have just read, the terrain it covered, and what the ultimate significance is。 Something which lingers in my mind is how Le Bulgakov is a complete surprise — a pleasant one。 Part I began slowly but picked up and flowed right to the end。 There was all the possibility of where the story could go, particularly for someone coming off of reading Goethe’s Faust。 Part II was harder to get back into but in so many ways was the original resolve of Bulgakov’s Faustian pact。 It is so hard to unravel what I have just read, the terrain it covered, and what the ultimate significance is。 Something which lingers in my mind is how Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found contains essential features partly illuminated in The Master and Margarita: chess pieces that are alive, a talking and humorous cat (Cheshire Cat vs。 Behemoth), the maturation of a heroine (Alice and Margarita as pawn) into a queen (the White Queen and Queen Margot)。 TBC 。。。more
