Summary

Introducing Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith。

Celebrating the range and diversity of Penguin Classics, they take us from snowy Japan to springtime Vienna, from haunted New England to a sun-drenched Mediterranean island, and from a game of chess on the ocean to a love story on the moon。 Beautifully designed and printed, these collectible editions are bound in colourful, tactile cloth and stamped with foil。

Recently widowed, the unscrupulous and beautiful Lady Susan Vernon is determined to scheme her way through high society in the hope of a profitable new match - all while trying to marry off her unfortunate daughter。 Told through a series of letters, Jane Austen's magnificent first novella is as subversive as it is charming。

'The wit of Jane Austen has for partner the perfection of her taste' - Virginia Woolf

It was really interesting to read something in this style by Jane Austen。 It had lots of her characteristics and tell tale signs but I struggled a bit with the characters and who was who and who was the villain in the story。 I think it would have ended up being great but a bit lacking in structure for me。

This book feels so uniquely ahead of its time - from the scheming, manipulative protagonist with a charming exterior, to the romantic entanglements and scandals that I was pretty surprised to see to this extent in a regency era setting。 If there's one thing Lady Susan has it's audacity。 Despite her history of being meddlesome, flirtatious, and a neglectful mother, she is always incredulous as to why everyone assumes the worst of her - even though the letters she writes in private only confirm th This book feels so uniquely ahead of its time - from the scheming, manipulative protagonist with a charming exterior, to the romantic entanglements and scandals that I was pretty surprised to see to this extent in a regency era setting。 If there's one thing Lady Susan has it's audacity。 Despite her history of being meddlesome, flirtatious, and a neglectful mother, she is always incredulous as to why everyone assumes the worst of her - even though the letters she writes in private only confirm that her intentions are horrible and that everything she denies is in fact true。 I can't help but laugh in disbelief every time she guilt-trips and gaslights her companions into believing their prejudices against her are unfounded, that she has a good reason for everything she does, that she has done nothing wrong in her life, ever。All in all this book was such a pleasant, delicious surprise。 Jane Austen has always had such a good wit and keen understanding of character。 I can't believe she wrote this when she was 18, it's definitely one of her most underrated works。 。。。more

Written circa 1794–95。 A film was made roughly adapted from Lady Susan, but was produced under the borrowed title of Austen's juvenile story Love and Freindship。 Written circa 1794–95。 A film was made roughly adapted from Lady Susan, but was produced under the borrowed title of Austen's juvenile story Love and Freindship。 。。。more

I watched the movie Love and Friendship this morning (well done, mostly true to the novel except a bit different at the end) and then read the book today。 I really enjoyed this epistolary novella, Lady Susan is so awful and funny。 My only quibble is that the ending, which is in narrative form) is precipitous; I really would have rather had the conclusion be communicated in more detail via letters。

This was too short to really get into but oh how Jane Austen loves her ambitious and unapologetically manipulative women!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A snarky delight - Lady Susan runs roughshod over all the men around her。 Other women can only watch in dismay (or befriend her) till she is out-manipulated by a most surprising opponent。

Hadn’t heard of this one。 Quick read。 Story is told through correspondence between characters。 Fun to watch the scheming and manipulation by Lady Susan。 I enjoyed it and found they made a movie out of it called Love and Friendship with Kate Beckinsale。 Reviews were mixed but I enjoyed the adaptation even more than the novella it was based on。

Leah

What a ride。 Lady Susan is not likeable, nor is she meant to be。 It’s an interesting change。 As always, the language is delightful。 Austen really has a talent for characterization, and it is very apparent here。

everyone in this is so fucking petty i love it

This was so fun! And so different from all of Austen’s other works。 I was amazed by how clever it was。 Really strong throughout; bumped down to 4 stars because the ending didn’t deliver and things just sort of tapered off。

What a bad introduction to Jane Austen。。。
