Summary

An ordinary man undergoes a startling transformation—and fears that all of humanity may be next—in the mind-blowing new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter and Recursion

“You are the next step in human evolution。”

At first, Logan Ramsay isn’t sure if anything’s different。 He just feels a little 。 。 。 sharper。 Better able to concentrate。 Better at multitasking。 Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep。

But before long, he can’t deny it: Something’s happening to his brain。 To his body。 He’s starting to see the world, and those around him—even those he loves most—in whole new ways。

The truth is, Logan’s genome has been hacked。 And there’s a reason he’s been targeted for this upgrade。 A reason that goes back decades to the darkest part of his past, and a horrific family legacy。

Worse still, what’s happening to him is just the first step in a much larger plan, one that will inflict the same changes on humanity at large—at a terrifying cost。

Because of his new abilities, Logan’s the one person in the world capable of stopping what’s been set in motion。 But to have a chance at winning this war, he’ll have to become something other than himself。 Maybe even something other than human。

And even as he’s fighting, he can’t help wondering: what if humanity’s only hope for a future really does lie in engineering our own evolution?

Intimate in scale yet epic in scope, Upgrade is an intricately plotted, lightning-fast tale that charts one man’s thrilling transformation, even as it asks us to ponder the limits of our humanity—and our boundless potential。

After reading Dark Matter, I was excited for another Blake Crouch。 Once again his writing style paints such a vivid picture in my mind, it’s like watching a movie。 This was another unique and thought provoking premise that (unfortunately lol) felt very culturally relevant。 I wouldn’t call it a happy ending, but it was hopeful。 And I genuinely had no idea how the main character would resolve anything, so I was pleasantly surprised。 What I didn’t like: this book was very heavy on the scientific ja After reading Dark Matter, I was excited for another Blake Crouch。 Once again his writing style paints such a vivid picture in my mind, it’s like watching a movie。 This was another unique and thought provoking premise that (unfortunately lol) felt very culturally relevant。 I wouldn’t call it a happy ending, but it was hopeful。 And I genuinely had no idea how the main character would resolve anything, so I was pleasantly surprised。 What I didn’t like: this book was very heavy on the scientific jargon。 Yes, it’s a sci-fi。 But phew, the genetic lingo was long winded and I could have gone without。 。。。more

I scanned a lot of the pages and kinda lost interest。 Finished the book though so it gets 2 stars。

Not my favorite Blake Crouch book, but still glad I read it。 Completely appropriate to recommend to my students, which is a win in my book。 I usually like Crouch's play-by-play, picture-the-action-like-it's-on-tv writing style, but it exhausted me this time around。 I really liked Logan as a character and wanted more depth and substance in his development。 Definitely less of a commentary on genetic advancement and more of an op-ed about what humanity really needs to save itself。 Not my favorite Blake Crouch book, but still glad I read it。 Completely appropriate to recommend to my students, which is a win in my book。 I usually like Crouch's play-by-play, picture-the-action-like-it's-on-tv writing style, but it exhausted me this time around。 I really liked Logan as a character and wanted more depth and substance in his development。 Definitely less of a commentary on genetic advancement and more of an op-ed about what humanity really needs to save itself。 。。。more

Wow! Crouch dazzles again with this hard science fiction story set in the near future, about a man who receives genetic “upgrades” against his will and his race to save the world from a similar fate。 Tense and action-packed scenes are deftly woven into dense scientific musings, but it never felt like a jargon-filled slog。 Fans of Limitless or Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy will enjoy this mind-blowing epic that explores and pushes the boundaries of human abilities。

3。5 stars。 This started like a wild ride but stalled a bit for me about halfway through。 By the end there was so much going on that things got a little blurry for me, but I still enjoyed this book。 Blake Crouch is an always read for me and that hasn't changed。 3。5 stars。 This started like a wild ride but stalled a bit for me about halfway through。 By the end there was so much going on that things got a little blurry for me, but I still enjoyed this book。 Blake Crouch is an always read for me and that hasn't changed。 。。。more

4。5I’ve only read one other Blake Crouch book so far and I loved it so much I devoured it in one day。 Upgrade took me a few days and I didn’t feel quite the same urgency to complete it, but it hit me in an emotional way that I really wasn’t expecting。 Sci-fi always makes me think and often causes me to compare the book to the current world。 So of course I did that here too, and that ending, well, it was the one I needed for sure。 If you like sci-fi, I highly recommend this one and going in blind 4。5I’ve only read one other Blake Crouch book so far and I loved it so much I devoured it in one day。 Upgrade took me a few days and I didn’t feel quite the same urgency to complete it, but it hit me in an emotional way that I really wasn’t expecting。 Sci-fi always makes me think and often causes me to compare the book to the current world。 So of course I did that here too, and that ending, well, it was the one I needed for sure。 If you like sci-fi, I highly recommend this one and going in blind。 。。。more

Blake Crouch is a great writer—loved Dark Matter and Recursion。 I think this was just a little too science-y for my non-science brain。 Plot was interesting, but didn’t find myself caring for the main character that much and just skimmed to the end just to find out what happens。

Alexandra

Blake Crouch you’ve bloody done it again! Knocked it out of the ball park!

I was a little disappointed with the story as I feel that TV shows like Limitless had already covered most of the material in this story。 The main character is also not very likeable。 I felt with his superior intellect he could have found ways to do things differently and had way too many excuses。It is not Blake's best book but worth the read。 I was a little disappointed with the story as I feel that TV shows like Limitless had already covered most of the material in this story。 The main character is also not very likeable。 I felt with his superior intellect he could have found ways to do things differently and had way too many excuses。It is not Blake's best book but worth the read。 。。。more

Just like Blake Crouch's previous books, Upgrade is certainly entertaining and fun to read。 However this time, I had a harder time empathizing and believing in the protagonist's motivation and his plight。 The story simply felt too "out there" and repetitive。The book was basically the same story over and over again: X happens => upgrade => monologue => unbelievable action sequence => Y happens => upgrade => monologue => action sequence。 And it ultimately culminated to a climax that。。。 didn't addr Just like Blake Crouch's previous books, Upgrade is certainly entertaining and fun to read。 However this time, I had a harder time empathizing and believing in the protagonist's motivation and his plight。 The story simply felt too "out there" and repetitive。The book was basically the same story over and over again: X happens => upgrade => monologue => unbelievable action sequence => Y happens => upgrade => monologue => action sequence。 And it ultimately culminated to a climax that。。。 didn't address the issue or feel all that satisfying? It felt like a long battle sequence without (view spoiler)[Logan and Kara addressing the issue before her death (hide spoiler)]。Furthermore, I just couldn't buy into (view spoiler)[Logan's and Kara's conflict。 It felt very out of character to have Kara be the villain because she had never shown interest to be part of the genetic war。 But suddenly she is willing to kill Logan for it? It just felt too artificial and forced and unbelievable。 (hide spoiler)] So in my eyes, that significantly weakens the story and the journey。Lastly, I'm not really a fan of "end of the human race" / "saved the human race" type of stories。。。 it's a bit too extreme for me and I just can't get behind it。。。Those points aside, still in typical Blake Couch fashion, Upgrade is enthralling to read -- with twists and turns and edge-of-your-seat action sequences that keep you turning each page。 However, I did not enjoy this as much as I did Dark Matter and Recursion, as this one lacked a simulating plot as well as a relatable protagonist。 。。。more

Was great concept about genetic altering。 The author also has an intimate knowledge of New Mexico。 But it was too detailed, too drawn out。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 As always, Blake Crouch knocked this one out of the park。 There is always so much thought, research, and time that goes in to each one of his stories。 Very reminiscent of a good Michael Crichton story。 So intelligent, yet so interesting and easy to follow! I can’t wait for whatever comes next。

A dystopian vision fueled by genetic meddling (think GMOs gone haywire); a world on the verge of collapse where the constructs of science and compassion are at war。 Crouch, deft as he is at penning page-turners, takes a swipe at most neuroses in our social media addicted world and asks us not to ignore our humanity。 I liked Dark Matter and Recursion better, but this ride is more than worth taking。

i was excited for this but wow, what a disappointment。

Kathleen

I had high expectations for this book after devouring and loving both Recursion and Dark Matter。 This one took a bit to get into and I wasn’t really into the storyline until about 30% in。 There are definitely more parts in this book that made me scratch my head-not in a good way。 However, still a book that was hard to put down -I just didn’t enjoy it as much as his previous work。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved Dark Matter and Recursion but I was not impressed with Upgrade。 I work in the genetics field and even this was TOO MUCH GENETICS。 I listened to this so I don't know how many gene names he listed in one section, but it was an absurd list, one right after another。 And then the same thing happened with vaccine manufacturers and the chemical pathway of hunger。 Was this just to show that the author did a boatload of research? Enjoyable, fairly fast read that explores the question of how much the ends justify the means in scientific research。 If you create a treatment that might stop our species’ shuffle toward extinction, what’s the acceptable cost? The story was engaging and the ideas fresh, and actually the results of the epilogue made the story much more positive for me (especially since the solution found is one with which I tend to agree)。Overall, quick-paced and interesting, although the narrative sometimes lagg Enjoyable, fairly fast read that explores the question of how much the ends justify the means in scientific research。 If you create a treatment that might stop our species’ shuffle toward extinction, what’s the acceptable cost? The story was engaging and the ideas fresh, and actually the results of the epilogue made the story much more positive for me (especially since the solution found is one with which I tend to agree)。Overall, quick-paced and interesting, although the narrative sometimes lagged (perhaps necessarily) a bit when the author had to lay out a few technical bits of genetic backstory necessary for a lay reader to understand the book’s events。 。。。more

It’s no doubt that Blake Crouch knows how to write。 He is able to yet again combine science fiction and thriller into a compelling story so effortlessly and seamlessly。 It’s the perfect balance of both genres。 Yet, something I always appreciate with Blake’s writing is the underlying sentiment he has woven into the story。 It’s subtle in the way that it’s not in your face but at the same time, the heart of the story。 There are just some quotes in this book that are beautifully written and I love h It’s no doubt that Blake Crouch knows how to write。 He is able to yet again combine science fiction and thriller into a compelling story so effortlessly and seamlessly。 It’s the perfect balance of both genres。 Yet, something I always appreciate with Blake’s writing is the underlying sentiment he has woven into the story。 It’s subtle in the way that it’s not in your face but at the same time, the heart of the story。 There are just some quotes in this book that are beautifully written and I love how the end had me feeling hopeful。The only reason this book doesn’t get 5 stars is because, towards the end, things started to fall flat。 In the beginning, I found the story to be so thrilling and exciting it was genuinely hard to put the book down。 Even the science in the book was engaging, even though it was quite difficult to understand at times (especially since I know little to nothing about the topics of genetics besides the basics。) Unfortunately, in the final few pages, I found myself wanting to finish the book already。 I think that the plot in this book was one that I wasn’t into as much as his previous books - Dark Matter and Recursion。 I found myself connecting more to the plot of those books。 Despite that, this book is still exceptional and I will for sure read his upcoming book whenever it comes out! 。。。more

Set in the not to distant future。 Man is still destroying his earth。 This paragraph spoke to me “ it’s denial。 Selfishness。 Magical thinking。 We are not rational beings。 We seek comfort rather than a clear-eyed stare into reality。 We consume and preen and convince ourselves that if we keep our heads in the sand, the monsters will just go away。 Simply put, we refuse to help ourselves as a species。 We refuse to do what must be done。 Every danger we face links ultimately back to this failing。” Blak Set in the not to distant future。 Man is still destroying his earth。 This paragraph spoke to me “ it’s denial。 Selfishness。 Magical thinking。 We are not rational beings。 We seek comfort rather than a clear-eyed stare into reality。 We consume and preen and convince ourselves that if we keep our heads in the sand, the monsters will just go away。 Simply put, we refuse to help ourselves as a species。 We refuse to do what must be done。 Every danger we face links ultimately back to this failing。” Blake Crouch is our new Michael Crichton。 Pay attention when you read one of his books。 There is a lot to digest。 。。。more
