Summary

The wait is over

And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light。

When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her – freedom, prison or death。

With The Testaments, the wait is over。

Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead。

‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book。 Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in。’ Margaret Atwood

Having read THT many years ago, it was nice to see the characters carried forward towards their natural conclusions。 No spoilers but I really like the way that Ms。 Atwood crafted this whole dystopia。

Hannah

- not as good as handsmaids tale。 - feels like a cash grab and almost takes away the message from the first book。 - nicole was the most annoying character ever。

Did I stay up until 3am to finish this in one setting? You bet I did。 Having read the first book and then of course, gotten addicted to the TV show, I needed something until the next episode comes out, and I'm so happy I finally picked this up。 Seeing the future of Gilead, so far down the line and what has happened after so many years of them basically being left alone was a rare treat that I wasn't prepared for。 There were so many twists and turns, true to Handmaid's Tale tradition。 Did I stay up until 3am to finish this in one setting? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 As a relatively recent reader of The Handmaid’s Tale, I thought this was an interesting add-on。 I wasn’t quite sure if it gave enough development on the Founding Aunts as to how one went from independent woman pre-Gilead to violent zealot to disillusioned and looking to bring it down from within。 Like when she was giving out excessive violent punishments, was that just cover? Anyway, it’s not disappointing which is always nice for an evidently unplanned sequel。

i read this while rereading the handmaids tale and it was just bad。 do not recommend

Much better than the first。 I watched the show but never got past season 2 so it was nice to read something that I didn’t know anything about。 You don’t have to read the first book, though it does help with Gilliad set up。 Definitely recommend

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Between this book and the handmaid's tale I admit that I liked this one the best。 The way she made both girls, Offred's and Nick's daughter and Offred's and Luke's daughter, to meet with Aunt Lydia was very clever。 How the girls grew up with different costumes, how their lives were shaped。 How Aunt Lydia became the iconic Aunt that she is, how she managed to maintain her power through all the Gilead years, how she managed to outsmart everyone and to betray the system so thoroughly was amazing。 I Between this book and the handmaid's tale I admit that I liked this one the best。 The way she made both girls, Offred's and Nick's daughter and Offred's and Luke's daughter, to meet with Aunt Lydia was very clever。 How the girls grew up with different costumes, how their lives were shaped。 How Aunt Lydia became the iconic Aunt that she is, how she managed to maintain her power through all the Gilead years, how she managed to outsmart everyone and to betray the system so thoroughly was amazing。 In this book Aunt Lydia's real colors are exposed, her life experiences are presented, and all her sacrifices are explicit。 The reader really develops a sense of respect and awe towards her character。 As for the girls, how their lives are different and the anticipation that both of them are Offred's daughter's makes the story even more exciting。 How the plan is carried out, how Nicole is taken to GIlead, how she is removed from there, the complicated and dangerous journey is so exciting and intriguing。 Really enjoyed this book, the plot is amazing, very well written。 。。。more

。。。more

An amazing sequel to 'The Handmaid's Tale'。 It is probably double the length, but so worth the effort。 Gives a whole new light on Gilead, creating a new perspective。 Again, read the Historian Notes!! 3 POVs were not clear at the start。 Quick google search。。 don’t judge 😅 and I was able to continue。 Very good and the writing was easier to read since I had already gone through handmaid’s tale, MAs other book。

The Testaments being a sequel I was not expecting such a gripping story。 It answered just about all the questions I was left with in The Handmaids Tail。 I was wrapped in the story at once and found it hard to put down till the end。 Very good read。

On its own, I don’t think this book is bad。 I found the plot to be pretty compelling, and I love the world of Gilead enough that I would probably read anything set there。 However, this book did not need to occur。 The beauty of The Handmaid’s Tale was in its limited perspective and ambiguous ending。 We were left dreaming for the best yet expecting the worst for Offred。 By giving us the answers we never received in the original story, The Testaments undermined so much of what The Handmaid’s Tale w On its own, I don’t think this book is bad。 I found the plot to be pretty compelling, and I love the world of Gilead enough that I would probably read anything set there。 However, this book did not need to occur。 The beauty of The Handmaid’s Tale was in its limited perspective and ambiguous ending。 We were left dreaming for the best yet expecting the worst for Offred。 By giving us the answers we never received in the original story, The Testaments undermined so much of what The Handmaid’s Tale was trying to say。 I enjoyed my time reading it, but I wish this book had never been written。 。。。more

OMG THIS BOOK。I honestly think this is up with the top 10 books I have read the quickest - honestly read it in 3 days。I read the first book of this during my alevels so I did a full "study" of what each chapter meant ect。。。 So it was really nice to just enjoy this book from a story POV - I also love the TV series so this book about what happens after was a major bonus!!I know other people didn't like that it was written in a different POV to the first book however I loved that it was written dif OMG THIS BOOK。I honestly think this is up with the top 10 books I have read the quickest - honestly read it in 3 days。I read the first book of this during my alevels so I did a full "study" of what each chapter meant ect。。。 So it was really nice to just enjoy this book from a story POV - I also love the TV series so this book about what happens after was a major bonus!!I know other people didn't like that it was written in a different POV to the first book however I loved that it was written differently。 I think it needed to be written differently due to the action-packed "current" nature of the book, whilst the first Handmaids Tale was based off a more "past" storyline。I do not want to hide my review because of any spoliers - all I can say is that this is the perfect sequel to the Handmaid's Tale! I love how it is based both in Gilead and in Canada so we can see both POV's and how Gilead has developed/functionned since its first inception。 。。。more

Chilling and extraordinary。 Every bit as good as its predecessor—in some ways better。

I loved it。 The story followed The Handmaid’s Tale so well and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about some of the other characters in the story。 I feel a sense of peace knowing how things ended and I’m so pleased Atwood decided to write this sequel after so many years to answer all our questions。

Review transcribed from my reading journal (2021): The Testaments explores the complicity in one's own oppression, redemption and passing the torch on to new generations。 Atwood explores the complexities of women's power in a culture that stifles it and their power to either uphold or fight against their oppression with the mastery that comes with her well venerated career。 Review transcribed from my reading journal (2021): The Testaments explores the complicity in one's own oppression, redemption and passing the torch on to new generations。 Atwood explores the complexities of women's power in a culture that stifles it and their power to either uphold or fight against their oppression with the mastery that comes with her well venerated career。 。。。more

I would rate this book 4。49 stars - really enjoyed the read。 It was a page-turner, told it's own story but obviously also was a follow up to The Handmaid's Tale, and had a nice twist at the end to wrap things up。 I actually enjoyed this as a story more than the original, although in fairness the world building was as central this time around。 I would rate this book 4。49 stars - really enjoyed the read。 It was a page-turner, told it's own story but obviously also was a follow up to The Handmaid's Tale, and had a nice twist at the end to wrap things up。 I actually enjoyed this as a story more than the original, although in fairness the world building was as central this time around。 。。。more

This is the rare sequel that surpasses the original。 If you read The Handmaid's Tale and were left bereft over the state of Gilead and its women, this is a must-read。 Where The Handmaid's Tale sets the stage, The Testaments dives beneath the surface portrayals of the actors in this dystopian world, revealing that all is not what it seems, and few of the actors are faithfully playing the roles they are assigned。 This will give you hope that even in a misogynistic theocracy, resistance can bring u This is the rare sequel that surpasses the original。 If you read The Handmaid's Tale and were left bereft over the state of Gilead and its women, this is a must-read。 Where The Handmaid's Tale sets the stage, The Testaments dives beneath the surface portrayals of the actors in this dystopian world, revealing that all is not what it seems, and few of the actors are faithfully playing the roles they are assigned。 This will give you hope that even in a misogynistic theocracy, resistance can bring upheavals。 。。。more

I liked this quite a bit。 I was a bit lukewarm on The Handmaid’s Tale, which focused more on the story of a single character living in a dystopian world。 (I also didn’t remember most of the details, but was still able to follow this book with no problem。) This book takes a different angle and peels back the curtain to show a bit of how that dystopia developed, which I found more interesting。 It is split between multiple perspectives including different points in time and both an insider and outs I liked this quite a bit。 I was a bit lukewarm on The Handmaid’s Tale, which focused more on the story of a single character living in a dystopian world。 (I also didn’t remember most of the details, but was still able to follow this book with no problem。) This book takes a different angle and peels back the curtain to show a bit of how that dystopia developed, which I found more interesting。 It is split between multiple perspectives including different points in time and both an insider and outsider。 。。。more

This was a great part 2 to The Handmaid's Tale, these stories inside were laid out in a way that sounding like reading a diary, and I liked that a lot。 I see where they got some ideas for the TV from this book too with the newest series。 This was a great part 2 to The Handmaid's Tale, these stories inside were laid out in a way that sounding like reading a diary, and I liked that a lot。 I see where they got some ideas for the TV from this book too with the newest series。 。。。more

What a brilliant read! Having not read or seen The Handmaids Tale, I was not sure I’d know what was going on or if I’d enjoy this。 Atwood has written 3 points of view wonderfully。 One growing up in Gilead, one outside of Gilead and the other from the foundations。 It was intriguing & I didn’t feel it was necessary to have read the first book。 The characters were easy to connect with, the story flowed & I couldn’t put it down。

A Continuation of The Handmaid’s TaleThe Testaments is a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale。 As with most movies, most book sequels (consider Go Set a Watchman, the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird) are inferior to their predecessors。 The Testaments is a good book, to be sure。 For me it got much better once I was 85% finished。 So don’t be discouraged to the point of discarding The Testaments before you finish。
