Summary

Courtney Gould’s thrilling YA debut The Dead and the Dark is about the things that lurk in dark corners, the parts of you that can’t remain hidden, and about finding home in places—and people—you didn’t expect。

The Dark has been waiting—and it won't stay hidden any longer。

Something is wrong in Snakebite, Oregon。 Teenagers are disappearing, some turning up dead, the weather isn’t normal, and all fingers point to TV’s most popular ghost hunters who have just come to town。

Logan Ortiz-Woodley, daughter of TV's ParaSpectors, has never been to Snakebite before。 But the moment she and her dads arrive, she starts to get the feeling that there's more than ghosts plaguing this small town。 Ashley Barton’s boyfriend was the first teen to go missing, and she’s felt his ghost following her ever since。 Although everyone shuns the Ortiz-Woodleys, the mysterious Logan may be the only person who can help Ashley get some answers。

When Ashley and Logan team up to figure out who—or what—is haunting Snakebite, their investigation reveals truths about the town, their families, and themselves that neither of them are ready for。 As the danger intensifies, they realize that their growing feelings for each other could be a light in the darkness。

This book has me by the throat。 I'm still thinking about it a week later。 I loved the dynamic in Logans family, the stressors, the tension。 All along you know something is weird but you never know what, and in the end, the truth is more earth rocking than any theory you could've come up with。 Ashley is just a girl who's been through too much。 She loses too much and just wants answers。 And the story of trust that blossoms into love between the two of them is beautiful。 This was a he'll of a thril This book has me by the throat。 I'm still thinking about it a week later。 I loved the dynamic in Logans family, the stressors, the tension。 All along you know something is weird but you never know what, and in the end, the truth is more earth rocking than any theory you could've come up with。 Ashley is just a girl who's been through too much。 She loses too much and just wants answers。 And the story of trust that blossoms into love between the two of them is beautiful。 This was a he'll of a thriller and I'll be recommending it for forever 。。。more

4。25 Star Rating - This book was so satisfying to read in one sitting, curled up in a ball by a window looking at the autumnal weather。 It's a murder mystery in a forest setting with queerness (TW: and small-town homophobia), themes of death and grief, along with paranormal elements that all in all made for a perfect spooky season concoction。 Although I didn't find this novel to be scary, I found the story and characters made for such an interesting intrigue-read and loved the plot set-up。 There 4。25 Star Rating - This book was so satisfying to read in one sitting, curled up in a ball by a window looking at the autumnal weather。 It's a murder mystery in a forest setting with queerness (TW: and small-town homophobia), themes of death and grief, along with paranormal elements that all in all made for a perfect spooky season concoction。 Although I didn't find this novel to be scary, I found the story and characters made for such an interesting intrigue-read and loved the plot set-up。 There are instances where the main characters can be frustrating, and where you can really feel the YA tone, but overall I think the intention and playthrough of everything tied up nicely and definitely didn't leave me disappointed! 。。。more

Really! Hard to put down。 I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I do。 I’m a big Stephen King fan, and though the author’s writing style is quite different, it’s every bit as captivating。 It’s enlightening to read an excellent character driven story。 So often the characters are shallow。 But not in this book。 Looking forward to Gould’s next novel。

Tristan disappeared a week after Brandon arrived。 His other crime? Well, he’s a gay man in a small, conservative town。 What I loved most about this book is the intricacy of the plot。 It kept me guessing for most of the book and although I guessed some of the ending, I didn’t guess it all。 The author did a fabulous job of tying it together, while finding an artful balance between “the monsters are humans” and “the monsters are supernatural” that kept me hooked。 If you like spooky books (and who doesn’t at this time of year!) that leave you slightly unsettled while creating rich imagery, this will be an excellent fall read。 。。。more

2,5 starsI like how the book takes a different approach to horror with the idea of a m/m TV ghosthunter couple, their daughter and the return to their tiny and far-off home town。 But the journey through the story didn't really engage me。 I thought the daughter and her love interest have no chemistry, and that's not even taking into account the bullshit the love interest does to her and her family。 The villain seems also too obvious to me, since we know it's a man from the start and there are bar 2,5 starsI like how the book takes a different approach to horror with the idea of a m/m TV ghosthunter couple, their daughter and the return to their tiny and far-off home town。 But the journey through the story didn't really engage me。 I thought the daughter and her love interest have no chemistry, and that's not even taking into account the bullshit the love interest does to her and her family。 The villain seems also too obvious to me, since we know it's a man from the start and there are barely any male possible suspects introduced (that I thought likely)。 And the idea of this isolated small town feels way too underused。 I thought there was going to be a supernatural reason why the place is so isolated but nope? And the love interest and everyone else claim how special the place is yet there are no (shitty) history or current customs mentioned that they're into at all, so the town really has no character other than hating newcomers and progress which is too little to tell a compelling story。I've considered rating is two stars, but Brandon's POV later on was quite touching, so the third star is for him。 。。。more

This was a tensely atmospheric supernatural thriller with some unexpected queer romance thrown in。 The main characters are in that summer-after-graduation stage that blurs the line on whether this is technically young adult, but I'd say it reads with the ease of a YA novel but with the gravity of an adult thriller。 Gould blends the claustrophobic atmosphere of being queer in a rural small town (where people will glare at you and gossip about you but never attack you outright) with the tenseness This was a tensely atmospheric supernatural thriller with some unexpected queer romance thrown in。 The main characters are in that summer-after-graduation stage that blurs the line on whether this is technically young adult, but I'd say it reads with the ease of a YA novel but with the gravity of an adult thriller。 Gould blends the claustrophobic atmosphere of being queer in a rural small town (where people will glare at you and gossip about you but never attack you outright) with the tenseness of a place where something supernatural is lurking, causing destruction only when your back is turned。There were definitely some pieces that didn't quite gel for me: (view spoiler)[It was unclear how the Dark was powerful enough to pull together Logan's remains into a living human but could be extinguished by her forgiving her father。 I also wish there had been some exposition of how Alejo and Ashley explained Sheriff Paris' death and how everyone immediately accepted their assertion that Paris was the killer。 And I felt like the development of Logan and Ashley's relationship was a bit rushed。 (hide spoiler)] But on the whole, I found the plot compelling and the writing excellent, and I was willing to have some suspension of disbelief to enjoy the story。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 There was an unspoken rule in Snakebite that said that this truth was different and dangerous。 It was self-exile。 It wasn't the kind of thing Snakebite knew how to forgive。 I truly don't know how to rate this one。 It's better than a three star read (and for me, those are good) but it doesn't feel like it's fully a four star thing because parts of the book feel。。。 not unfinished, but more like they'll disappear from memory by the time I wake in a few hours。 The smokey cover art manages to capture There was an It's better than a three star read (and for me, those are good) but it doesn't feel like it's fully a four star thing because parts of the book feel。。。 not unfinished, but more like they'll disappear from memory by the time I wake in a few hours。 The smokey cover art manages to capture the feeling pretty well, honestly。The Dead and the Dark balances the shifting POV chapters pretty well, though some chapters are told from the perspective of what kind of feels like the wrong character。 For instance, while Ashley can see ghosts, Logan can't, and during more than one ghost appearance, we're with Logan who isn't privy to Ashley's visions so we're another step removed from the action。 Whatever, not the writer and choices were made that I don't have to agree with nor do I need to understand fully。 I like Logan and Ashley and there are some absolutely golden moments in this book。 I liked the idea of Logan's family and the way what's shown to the world is vastly different from what Logan herself experiences, particularly in how Brandon is around her。 It works as both a celebrity commentary and how families across the board can appear one way but reality is a different story。 Extra bonus points are awarded for the dynamic on TV not necessarily being false but simply different due to circumstances。There's a fair amount of creeping dread and Snakebite is perfectly suffocating for an isolated small town that spits out those who are different (if they're lucky) and quietly grinds down others, and it's not a place where the chosen golden kids are exempt from the conformity。 The Dark isn't one of those paranormal baddies that is never explained which is another plus。 If I don't get murdered outside my motel room, let's get drinks sometime。I'm gonna have to agree with those who point out that Ashley/Logan is part of where the story falters。 We spend a very, very long time in the book thinking that Ashley's IN love with her missing (ex) boyfriend and it's not until more than halfway through the book that we find out that they didn't just break up because Ashley didn't want him throwing his life away to stay in Snakebite。 I think someone else mentioned it was more tell than show and it kind of feels that the author felt they were obviously meant to get together so some things were skipped, or maybe they simply fell into the time skips that happen throughout the book。 The pairing is one I like, but it felt like it was missing an important component but I couldn't tell you what it was。 Also, I'm fairly certain that even if you did help break him out of jail, if you sent my dad to jail when you knew damn well he didn't deserve to be there AND didn't have your family intervene to get him out when you should've realized that justice was moving slower than molasses, well。。。 that might be a dealbreaker。 But I get that extraordinary circumstances and all that so eh。The other downside is that we don't really get to know anyone other than Logan, Ashley, the Dark (sorta), and bits of Alejo and Brandon。 Brandon's intentional but since a good chunk of Ashley's friend group is decimated by the end of the book, it'd be nice if we felt anything about it。 Bug gets a brief shining chapter and she seemed to be an absolute goddamn delight and Tristan's memory is always golden, so I'm not really sure how that's squared with the rest of the friend group。 Eh。 Teen dynamics are a complicated thing。 Anyway, point is, Snakebite doesn't offer much in the way of additional characters you get to root for for very long。 Elexis has a quick moment after another character's death and it's a good one, but it just illustrates that the cast had potential for more。 She wished they weren't always working in reverse, trying to understand what was already done。The end threw me for a loop too, but not the resolution of the Dark and the ghosts and all the other Snakebite paranormal activity。 Nope。 Logan's plan from the start was to have her gap year after Snakebite, but a big, big part of her character arc is how she didn't fit in with both fathers after the events of the Tulsa episode, and then she finds out WHY and is still off on her merry way, crying about the thought of being alone after everything。 Why wouldn't finding out the truth, after Brandon is finally able to step up and be closer to the father he wanted to be, why wouldn't they try and explore that, at least for a while? I get Ashley leaving Snakebite but Logan leaving her dads at that particular moment felt。。。 odd。Also, fuck you, Tammy Barton, for being more concerned with whether the shitty town was laughing at you behind your back than whether or not your friend's son, who is also your daughter's friend, tried to KILL another person。 Really, fuck you。There are twists but do they count as twists if you see two of them coming a mile away and the biggest twist of all seems to be that local boy is just an unbelievable asshole? Still, you hold out hope and for the most part even seeing some of it coming doesn't really lessen the impact。 I wanted something moody and spooky to slip into Halloween prep mode and this managed to scratch that itch very well。They had a couple of spots on the road, a couple of sights to take in, but no destination。 That was the point of it。 Logan had been everywhere, but she'd never felt at home。 Ashley had only known one home her whole life, but it wasn't home anymore。They had a thousand new skies to see。 。。。more

Themes are little young- true ghost story, and little to “on the nose” for some key parts, little to cliché for my liking。 Reads at a high school level- not really Young Adult。

Creepy at first, but turns out to be a very interesting commentary on what hate in the world creates and can result in。

I’m not a huge fan of paranormal books。 I find them to be incredibly cheesy albeit I’ve read 1-2 that were decent。 I went in blind, totally taken in by the intriguing cover。 I wish I would have read it closer to Halloween! 👻 If you’re into ghosts, spirits, any paranormal of the like, you don’t want to pass up on The Dead and the Dark。 It gave very much Stranger Things vibes, I loved it!
