Wow this was so good! The way this story is told right from the start with the main character writing a letter to her lover (aka Dracula) was such a great way to pull you in to her story。 I loved that the entire story is told like a diary entry into her life and thoughts while in what she comes to see as a manipulative relationship。 It starts with her being turned into a vampire and you see how her character grows, she starts very much swept away and in love with him and over time realizes she’s Wow this was so good! I enjoyed the first half of this novel quite a bit。 It had a lot of the old lore in it despite being a retelling, but somewhere along the middle the characters became very indecisive and it was long going。 Overall, a different view on the tale of Dracula and the end might surprise you。 For that alone, it's worth picking it up!Happy Reading! A Dowry of Blood is a dark and delicious story of Dracula and his first bride, Constanta, spread across centuries。 Constanta lies in the mud on the brink of death when a man suddenly appears, saying he cannot save her, but it is in his power to help her。 And so Constanta begins her second life with this arresting man who is as passionate as he is cruel。 Constanta tells her story in the form of a letter to her husband, although she never once utters his name。 It is her first and last love letter A Dowry of Blood is a dark and delicious story of Dracula and his first bride, Constanta, spread across centuries。 Constanta lies in the mud on the brink of death when a man suddenly appears, saying he cannot save her, but it is in his power to help her。 And so Constanta begins her second life with this arresting man who is as passionate as he is cruel。 Constanta tells her story in the form of a letter to her husband, although she never once utters his name。 It is her first and last love letter to him because in her own words: It was never my intention to murder you。 Not in the beginning, anyway。As her husband adds two more people to their dysfunctional group, Constanta gradually realizes how brutal and suffocating his love could be。 This seductively written story is a quick read and can be consumed in a single sitting。 It held my rapt attention from beginning to end。 Although, it took some time to get used to the second-person singular voice。 I thought it would be a bit spicier than it was, considering most vampire books I’ve read are heavy on the spice。 The open-door scenes were pretty brief。 The polyamorous relationship was well done, not just in the bedroom, but in their deep connection with each other。 As this is a dark vampire story, the author has a list of possible triggers at the beginning of the book and on Goodreads (in her review)。 I have no clue what the next book will be like, but I cannot wait to read it。 Thank you to Redhook (Orbit) for providing me with a copy to review。 https://booksandwheels。com 。。。more

A surprisingly engrossing journey of love and abuse through different countries and times。A Dowry of Blood is the exposition of Constanta’s second life as she writes it to the person who made her。 The person who saved her from the brink of dead during a time of war and promises her eternal life and love。 Together they start a new life and relationship that will expand and change over the centuries while they get to experience different cultures of many countries during many different time period A surprisingly engrossing journey of love and abuse through different countries and times。A Dowry of Blood is the exposition of Constanta’s second life as she writes it to the person who made her。 The person who saved her from the brink of dead during a time of war and promises her eternal life and love。 Together they start a new life and relationship that will expand and change over the centuries while they get to experience different cultures of many countries during many different time periods。This book is written as the main character recounting her life in a sort of open letter to another character, so not the regular format you might expect from a novel。It really works for this story as it is mainly character driven。 The choice of writing it this way makes all the emotions jump off of the pages。 The fear, admiration, horror, pain, entrancement, confusion, joy, anger。 Add the absolutely stunning prose to it and the result is a true piece of art。Every new character that gets introduced is just as captivating。 They are intriguing entities by themselves, but the depth and intricacies of the built and changing relationships are just astounding。 It makes for more people who love each other in unique ways while they also feel as one big family。 Magdalena is outspoken and clever in ways that don’t always match with their often secluded life。 Alexi is young and still wants to explore everything this new life has to bring him。 While Constanta knows to stay within the bounds that were set for her, the others both unapologetically stand up for what they care about but whether it will result in them flourishing, or whining away is still to be seen。A horrific exploration of all the different types of abuse that will find its way into your mind to stay there for long after you finish reading。Thanks to Little, Brown Book Group UK for providing me with a review copy via NetGalley。 。。。more

I also haven't read Dracula before so I don't know how accurate or true to the characters this book is, but it was really accessible so if you think you need to have read Dracula beforehand, you definitely don't need to have done so。 。。。more

I need approximately 300 more pages if this please! This is a beautifully written brides of Dracula retelling, the author really packs a punch in a very short amount of time。 The nuanced relationship between Constanta & “you” along with the other brides was handled very well & the pacing was excellent。 To me it felt like there was something missing though, whether it was the impersonal POV that alienated the characters or the surface level view of events despite the way the book was written, I’m I need approximately 300 more pages if this please! A DOWRY OF BLOOD is a compelling story about love, ruin, and found family。 Written in the second person, the book is written as a diary/letter to the man who turned her into a vampire and renamed her, forever changing her。 Constanta was found amidst a war where she was on the brink of death, begging God for salvation。 A beautiful man appears and instead turns her into a vampire and claims her as his wife。 He is mercurial and hypocritical, and Constanta learns to form her eternal life around his A DOWRY OF BLOOD is a compelling story about love, ruin, and found family。 Written in the second person, the book is written as a diary/letter to the man who turned her into a vampire and renamed her, forever changing her。 Constanta was found amidst a war where she was on the brink of death, begging God for salvation。 A beautiful man appears and instead turns her into a vampire and claims her as his wife。 He is mercurial and hypocritical, and Constanta learns to form her eternal life around his whims, a life that seems content enough until he begins to bring others into the fold。As Magdalena and Alexi are brought into their family, Constanta begins to confront the things she had before ignored in her quest for something better, actions which could have deadly consequences - even for the eternal vampires。The story is based on the brides of Dracula, giving these unknown sisters a new life and power in their own right。 The format of the book is haunting and compelling, written from Constanta to Dracula in the second person。 Her tone is conversational and chilling at times, infusing the right amount of emotion and detail into the story to fully capture the ways in which she has been enthralled and the ways that she begins to understand the world into which she has been brought。 Most compelling is the relationships formed between those Dracula turns, with Magdalena and Alexi forming their own bonds with Constanta, introduced to each other as siblings and ultimately become a new found family in the unending life they now have。The single-mindedness of obsession and the ways love or something like it can cause you to overlook or misread narcissism and a lack of empathy are detailed amidst Constanta's story。 As she begins to care for the siblings she is given, her eyes are opened to the truth of the man who turned her and his own dark passions。 And when she begins to realize these failings, the only action left to take is the one he never believed she would。The writing is absolutely consuming and haunting, and it was a read that I ended up finishing in just a couple sittings。 Constanta and her story are absolutely compelling。 Overall, A DOWRY OF BLOOD is a chilling and revelatory fantasy read that captures and reimagines the horror classic in a new and unique way。 Highly recommend picking this one up for an unputdownable and consuming read! Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Good romance, good plot, great word choice and excellent emotional highs and lows。 My only complaint is that because this book was formatted as a sort of diary, some of the scenes felt rushed。 I wasn't entirely convinced of the reason Constanza finally turned on Dracula, mainly because we were told more of his cruelties than shown them。 It was hard to believe three vampires would turn on their master over a slap, when they saw him committing atrocities all the time。 The audio book narrator has a Good romance, good plot, great word choice and excellent emotional highs and lows。 My only complaint is that because this book was formatted as a sort of diary, some of the scenes felt rushed。 I wasn't entirely convinced of the reason Constanza finally turned on Dracula, mainly because we were told more of his cruelties than shown them。 It was hard to believe three vampires would turn on their master over a slap, when they saw him committing atrocities all the time。 The audio book narrator has a PERFECT voice for this story。 Absolute chills <3 。。。more

A Dowry of Blood is the story of one of Dracula's brides, of her life under his thumb and eventual escape。I am a #1 vampire stan - I grew up with all of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles lovingly placed on my bedroom headboard, a place of ceremonious honor。 Vamps are just SO fun when written well, and they bring the melodrama! With the correct author, there is no creature better suited to hold a mirror up to the human condition。 So yeah, I liked this novella。 I get why it has glowing reviews。 It is A Dowry of Blood is the story of one of Dracula's brides, of her life under his thumb and eventual escape。I am a #1 vampire stan - I grew up with all of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles lovingly placed on my bedroom headboard, a place of ceremonious honor。 Vamps are just SO fun when written well, and they bring the melodrama!
