Summary

This "gripping and moving" story of two foster brothers sharply examines the impact of loss, grief, and abuse (Emma Donohgue, bestselling author of Room) -- and celebrates the power of friendship。

When Adam Blake lands the best elective ever in his senior year, serving as an aide to the school psychologist, he thinks he's got it made。 Sure, it means a lot of sitting around, which isn't easy for a guy with ADHD, but he can't complain, since he gets to spend the period texting all his friends。 Then the doctor asks him to track down the troubled freshman who keeps dodging her, and Adam discovers that the boy is Julian -- the foster brother he hasn't seen in five years。

Adam is ecstatic to be reunited。 At first, Julian seems like the boy he once knew。 He's still kind hearted。 He still writes stories and loves picture books meant for little kids。 But as they spend more time together, Adam realizes that Julian is keeping secrets, like where he hides during the middle of the day, and what's really going on inside his house。 Adam is determined to help him, but his involvement could cost both boys their lives。

First-time novelist Robin Roe relied on life experience when writing this exquisite, gripping story featuring two lionhearted characters。

This book is so sad but heartwarming at the same time。 Even though Julian had an awful home life with no one to love him there, he had people outside of his own home that loved him so much and that would be willing to risk their lives for him。 The way Adam kind of took him under his wing even after all the ideas that Russell had planted into Julian's head was so kind。 Adam truly was a good soul in this book even though he had felt like a failure whenever Russell was trying to kidnap Julian。 He w This book is so sad but heartwarming at the same time。 Even though Julian had an awful home life with no one to love him there, he had people outside of his own home that loved him so much and that would be willing to risk their lives for him。 The way Adam kind of took him under his wing even after all the ideas that Russell had planted into Julian's head was so kind。 Adam truly was a good soul in this book even though he had felt like a failure whenever Russell was trying to kidnap Julian。 He was the one who had truly saved Julian and is the reason that he ended up living。 。。。more

It was all so fast。。。 before they left。 I want to spin it back。。。 slow it down。 Why is time like that? Why does it slow down in the places you don't want it to, but it speeds away when you're happy?"A List of Cages follows two boys, Julian and Adam, former foster brothers, who encounter each other by chance in school。 Adam is tasked by the school psychologist to keep Julian, a shy and troubled boy, company, but as their friendship grows, Adam begins to realise Julian is keeping secrets。 This book is about the healing power of platonic love and friendship, the effects of psychological and physical trauma on a child and about how family is much more than just blood and genes。I sped through this book in a three or four sittings in one day。 It was addictive to read and I found myself wanting to know how it ends so badly that I just binged it。 I think the story is overall solid and I think the author had some great points she wanted to highlight and explore, such as the life-changing power of true friendship, compassion and kindness, as well as how abusers are able to worm their way into their victims' minds and make it so the victim does not register that they are a victim。 This book was, at times, extremely uncomfortable and upsetting to read。 I truly felt disgusted during some of the descriptions of the abuse Julian goes through。 The chapters with (view spoiler)[ him being locked in this little trunk were really horrible and anxiety inducing。 (hide spoiler)] I would definitely approach this book with caution if you are sensitive to depictions of physical and mental abuse。 None of the scenes felt overly or distastefully graphic, and I think the author really showed the ramifications of those events instead of just ignoring them like some authors do。Adam and Julian were both interesting, enjoyable characters, and I loved their friendship/brotherhood a lot - those scenes with the two of them (view spoiler)[ in the hospital after Adam has saved Julian from the trunk and Adam refusing to leave Julian's side made me very emotional。 (hide spoiler)] I am a sucker for stories that center platonic love, and so naturally I was really into their storyline and how Adam (and Adam's friends) took Julian under their wing。 I was so happy that (view spoiler)[ at the end Adam's mom was able to get Julian's custody and he was able to live with them and begin his healing process surrounded by people who love him。 (hide spoiler)] I also liked how Charlie, Adam's grumpy buff best pal, slowly came to care about Julian, despite not really knowing how to show it。While there was a lot about this book that I enjoyed, it also didn't work for me on every level。 The romance was very bland and blah, and I just felt it was a bit too rushed and that it took time away from the more interesting relationships and events。 I also think some aspects of the ending were a bit too rush or strange, for example (view spoiler)[ while I didn't think Russell coming back to get Julian was in any way out of character, it did feel super random that Charlie, accidentally, shot him (I think?)。 It was also not really addressed after that at all。 I mean, Charlie, accidentally, killed someone and we are just going to move on and not deal with that at all? (hide spoiler)] The ending also felt too fast。 I liked that the author tried to end the story with a note of hope, but I think the story, especially Julian's story, could've used a few more chapters to really show how he is coping and what his life is like now。 When I finished the book I felt alright, but also not quite satisfied。I would recommend this book, although it's definitely a story that's not for everyone。 It gets really dark and twisted and horrifying, but if you can handle that, go for it。 It's not the greatest book of all time, but it's not a bad book by any means。 。。。more

This gorged my heart and barely stitched it back together。 It is more than a good book, but I truly can't smile about it。If you're okay with breaking your heart and just beginning to heal it over the course of 300 pages, you can learn the importance of compassion [Going out of your way to relieve the physical, mental or emotional pains of others]。It certainly made me pray a lot。 This gorged my heart and barely stitched it back together。 It is more than a good book, but I truly can't smile about it。If you're okay with breaking your heart and just beginning to heal it over the course of 300 pages, you can learn the importance of compassion [Going out of your way to relieve the physical, mental or emotional pains of others]。It certainly made me pray a lot。 。。。more

3。5ish stars。This is really sad book about a kid that is abused。 What I liked about this book is Adam and his close group of friends and how they accept Julian into their circle。 I disliked how unfinished the book feels。 I want more character development, especially for Adam。 I want to see Julian realizes that Adam is not a superhero but just his friend/older brother。 The book ends too early。 I wanted to read about Julian growing into his own person, instead the author puts all of the focus on j 3。5ish stars。This is really sad book about a kid that is abused。 What I liked about this book is Adam and his close group of friends and how they accept Julian into their circle。 I disliked how unfinished the book feels。 I want more character development, especially for Adam。 I want to see Julian realizes that Adam is not a superhero but just his friend/older brother。 The book ends too early。 I wanted to read about Julian growing into his own person, instead the author puts all of the focus on just his abuse。 I want read more about Charlie’s development。 It’s missing a lot。 。。。more

3。5 ⭐️I think this book had a wonderful message。 And I really felt his gut wrenching pain the first five pages。 Why do teachers make you read out loud in class or let you pick your own groups? This always gave me so much anxiety in school。 Now as an adult, I’m completely fine reading out loud, but forcing me to do it in school, did not help me overcome that fear。 This book is a YA and I just don’t feel like I’m into that genre any more。 It also felt a little slow and I had to put the audio book 3。5 ⭐️I think this book had a wonderful message。 And I really felt his gut wrenching pain the first five pages。 Why do teachers make you read out loud in class or let you pick your own groups? This book is written from two points of view Adam a senior who is lived by all and Julian a freshman who feels invisible。 It is a story of abuse and how friendship is a strength you under estimate。 It is well written and engaging as it is heartbreaking。 A story that will touch you to your core。

Genius title。 Genius cover。 I thought this book would be a quick forgettable 3 star and that would be great。 Nope。 Julian’s story is raw and haunting and (buyer beware) really rough and emotional。 If you’re not up for that right now, be warned。 But the full circle weaving of this story I found incredibly beautiful, inspiring and powerful。 It’s a story of friendship。 But more than that, It’s a story of what happens when we choose not to judge, when we choose to serve, when we choose to love some Genius title。 Genius cover。 I thought this book would be a quick forgettable 3 star and that would be great。 Nope。 Julian’s story is raw and haunting and (buyer beware) really rough and emotional。 If you’re not up for that right now, be warned。 But the full circle weaving of this story I found incredibly beautiful, inspiring and powerful。 It’s a story of friendship。 But more than that, It’s a story of what happens when we choose not to judge, when we choose to serve, when we choose to love someone unselfishly。 It’s a story of what can happen when we think less about ourselves。 Its a story about living ip to our potential as human beings and what that may look like。 It’s full of bumps and twists but it’s a transformational process。 I’m interested in how much of this story is based on a true story - I’d like to know more。 But this part? It takes the heart of the book to a whole new level:Gradually, he goes quiet and turns to stare vacantly at the wall。 “I know。” He sounds so tired。 “I know if there was any choice at all, they wouldn’t have left me alone。 They would have made sure I was taken care of。”In a heartbeat, a thousand memories at once。 All the times I knew things I couldn’t have known known。 All the times he was assigned to me。 “Julian,“ I say, “maybe they did。”Absolutely beautiful。 Be that person。 Be Adam。 。。。more

Holy shit, this book。 I didn't know what to expect going into this, but I was absolutely blown away by not only the quality of the story but by how much I loved these characters。 They felt so real and my heart ached for them as I read about everything they went through。 I couldn't stop reading this once I picked it up -- my work for school went ignored as I found myself desperate to know if Julian ended up okay and if he and Adam got to be happy (or at least as happy as their scenario allowed th Holy shit, this book。 I didn't know what to expect going into this, but I was absolutely blown away by not only the quality of the story but by how much I loved these characters。 They felt so real and my heart ached for them as I read about everything they went through。 I couldn't stop reading this once I picked it up -- my work for school went ignored as I found myself desperate to know if Julian ended up okay and if he and Adam got to be happy (or at least as happy as their scenario allowed them to be)。 I will say, before picking this up, please please please make yourself aware of the trigger warnings that accompany this。 There are graphic descriptions of abuse, including starvation and whipping。 Don't read this if that will harm you。 This is a great book, but it shouldn't be read at the expense of your mental health。 。。。more

I'll give this 1000 out of 5 because this book hurts me so much ✨️ I read this book during my commute to and from office and not only once I stopped myself from screaming and crying, and I'm not even exaggerating。 It tells a story about 2 teens where the one has ADHD and the other has abusive experience from his family。 I think it's kinda triggering for those who has abusive experience because the story is really detail。 Just brace yourself if you decide to read this。 I'll give this 1000 out of 5 because this book hurts me so much ✨️ I read this book during my commute to and from office and not only once I stopped myself from screaming and crying, and I'm not even exaggerating。 It tells a story about 2 teens where the one has ADHD and the other has abusive experience from his family。 I think it's kinda triggering for those who has abusive experience because the story is really detail。 Just brace yourself if you decide to read this。 。。。more

Holy shit, this got intense! A trigger warning would have been nice, but yeah, maybe that would have spoiled a part of the story。 Some of the feelings Julian described hit close to home, a former version of me identifies with him。 So this was intense on a very personal level。 Since I’m already in a questionable mood it was a bit of a tough read。 At times the people and relationships in the story felt a bit forced, or a little too good to be true, but I can’t deny that this is a good read。

Definitely has a good message, but it seems more like a fan fiction version of violence than anything grounded in personal experiences aka reality。 I read a few years ago so I may be mistaken, but I remember loving the main character Adam and only him。
