This book wasn't what I was expecting。。。Norman Vincent Peale was a Protestant clergyman。 His advice may seem like 'preaching', but there are nuggets of useful information in what he writes even for those people who are non-believers。 He's right it is everyone's choice to be either happy or unhappy and the reason is, like Stoicism says, is that people are reacting to events in a certain way。 An example of the style is as follows: "Worry is a destructive process of occupying the mind with thoughts This book wasn't what I was expecting。。。Norman Vincent Peale was a Protestant clergyman。 His advice may seem like 'preaching', but there are nuggets of useful information in what he writes even for those people who are non-believers。 He's right it is everyone's choice to be either happy or unhappy and the reason is, like Stoicism says, is that people are reacting to events in a certain way。 An example of the style is as follows: "Worry is a destructive process of occupying the mind with thoughts contrary to God's love and care。 Basically, that is all worry is。 The cure is to fill the mind with thoughts of God's power, His (sic) protection, and His (sic) goodness。 So spend fifteen minutes daily filling your mind full of God。 Cram your mind full of the 'I believe philosophy' and you will have no mental room left to accommodate thoughts of worry and lack of faith。"Norman Vincent Peale had a good sense of humour because he writes that he "must report that the American people are so nervous and high-strung that now it is almost next to impossible to put them to sleep with a sermon。 It has been years since I have seen anyone sleep in church。" 。。。more

It is a good self help book everyone should read。 It is a good start to read this book as the tips in the book are simple and easy to follow。 It is recommended for those who usually are self-doubting and have a lot of negative self-talk。 You will see a lot of positive words in this book such as optimistic, forgive, wish for the best, peaceful, tranquil, confident, “I can do it” among other positive phrases。 This book also informs us that negative results start from you (within you)。 If you want It is a good self help book everyone should read。 It is a good start to read this book as the tips in the book are simple and easy to follow。 It is recommended for those who usually are self-doubting and have a lot of negative self-talk。 You will see a lot of positive words in this book such as optimistic, forgive, wish for the best, peaceful, tranquil, confident, “I can do it” among other positive phrases。 This book also informs us that negative results start from you (within you)。 If you want to change the result, you need to change your thoughts。 When you think, you talk and it becomes your attitude。 Such a habit will embed into your subconscious, the auto suggestion that guides your decision making。 Reading this book will give you a lot of tips to improve your way of thinking for the positive results such as leveling up your confidence, reducing tension and emotional reaction, controlling yourself through practicing silence and mindfulness。 However , I find some parts of this book not convincing to me。 Despite the fact that thinking positive is good, this book might make people frustrated as it suggests people to expect the best all the time。 Sometimes things don’t go as planned or expected。。 Therefore, we might get disappointed when expecting the best all the time。 If I were the author, I would have added despite expecting the best and having faith in what we do, let's be ready and prepare for the worst。 This notion helps people to have plan B if their plan A goes wrong。 Another thing is that some tips for self help lack scientific proven and illogical。 Some arguments are not well supported by scientific evidence or logic。 It is just supported by a few stories which I am not sure are true。 For example, laying the problems in the hands of God does not make sense to me and it conflicts with the book’s ideas that everything starts from within。 In a chapter, the book mentions how to make people like you。 We can achieve it by examining your social weaknesses and finding ways to improve it。 This does make sense to me as rather than praying and waiting for a miracle to happen, we should change ourselves first。 So the core of this book is that having faith in god can cure anything。 Atheists might find it difficult to be convinced。However, I still rate this book 4 out of 5 as it provides a lot of great positive words that I can embed it into my thoughts, which in turn influence my attitude 。。。more

I heard about this book a few months back and how it had been rather groundbreaking and revolutionary at the time of release。 It is certainly insightful and puts forward many helpful lessons and techniques, however the relentless, underlying theme of Christ and God and Prayer spoiled it a little for me。

Great message! I wrote many of the scriptures and sayings on index cards to reread。 He had many good stories and very uplifting and useful tips。 I felt like it did get a little repetitive about half way thru the book。 But it was a worthwhile read and I took many great things away from it。

The book is 50% about religion and 50% about positive thinking。 Even for someone that is not religious the message is still very powerful。 The author talks about the power of creating a mental picture of what we want to achieve, and eventually it will happen。 To focus on what we have instead of what we don't have。 To stay away from negative thoughts and instead have only positive ones, because the mind is powerful and we attract what we think。However positive thinking alone is not enough, it is The book is 50% about religion and 50% about positive thinking。 Even for someone that is not religious the message is still very powerful。 The author talks about the power of creating a mental picture of what we want to achieve, and eventually it will happen。 To focus on what we have instead of what we don't have。 To stay away from negative thoughts and instead have only positive ones, because the mind is powerful and we attract what we think。However positive thinking alone is not enough, it is only the first step。 The author doesn't mention that we have to define our goals and then work hard to achieve them。 Just by thinking that something good will happen will not make it happen。 Also one known danger about positive psychology is that it can create narcissists, obsessed with their goals and have their own view of the world, without being capable of seeing the damage they cause to others around them。 Positive thinking should be accompanied with self improvement, not only using our strengths but also work on our weaknesses。 Like the famous case of the great visionary that created one of the best products in the recent years, but also created a hostile environment for everyone that worked close to him。Read this book to believe that you have the power to achieve what you want。 But read something else, like The Magic of Thinking Big, to create a realistic plan to accomplish your goals, while taking care about what is important in your life, usually your family, work, and social circle。 。。。more

Didn't know this book was a religious book, but Peale mentioned early on that he nearly titled it "The Power of Faith," but chose "Positive Thinking" to appeal to more readers。 I am a religious Christian, so it didn't turn me off to the book at all。 I would rate it three stars because he would make his point clear early on in a chapter, but then continue with multiple stories that showed the same points over and over again。 Another frustrating problem with this book was that Peale didn't cite ha Didn't know this book was a religious book, but Peale mentioned early on that he nearly titled it "The Power of Faith," but chose "Positive Thinking" to appeal to more readers。 I am a religious Christian, so it didn't turn me off to the book at all。 I would rate it three stars because he would make his point clear early on in a chapter, but then continue with multiple stories that showed the same points over and over again。 Another frustrating problem with this book was that Peale didn't cite hardly at all。 There were many many instances where he would mention "a friend" in "a city I was in。" That was annoying to me。 Dale Carnegie's book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" had many of the same philosophies but the style was much better as Carnegie cited most of his sources。 Overall, I certainly agree with Peale's principle explained thoroughly in the book, but I wasn't pleased at how the book was delivered。 。。。more

Came across as overly preachy to me, like a really long sermon。 And I share the criticism voiced by many others that the generic nature to his “examples” just made them seem fake and way too convenient。

Immensely helpful。 My biggest takeaway from this book is that faith CAN be learned and must also be practiced。 I have made several Bible verses part of my morning and bedtime routine and have noticed benefits。 Committing verses of how and strength to memory is quite powerful。

DNF。I don't know who gave this book to me, but I certainly didn't buy it。 When I saw words "god" and "bible" mentioned about 20 times in just the first three pages, I thought ok, the person drives inspiration in their religion。 Fine。 All people are different。 But page after page it became apparent - the only essence of this book is to believe in god。 Nothing to do with positive thinking。 DNF。I don't know who gave this book to me, but I certainly didn't buy it。 When I saw words "god" and "bible" mentioned about 20 times in just the first three pages, I thought ok, the person drives inspiration in their religion。 Fine。 All people are different。 But page after page it became apparent - the only essence of this book is to believe in god。 Nothing to do with positive thinking。 。。。more

Although Norman Vincent has a totally religious perspective on the issue, the current self-help ideas took so much from him, obviously。 It is very simply written and literature-wise not satisfying, but can be read as an interesting content for seeing how the "positive thinking" ideas developed through the years。 Although Norman Vincent has a totally religious perspective on the issue, the current self-help ideas took so much from him, obviously。 It is very simply written and literature-wise not satisfying, but can be read as an interesting content for seeing how the "positive thinking" ideas developed through the years。 。。。more
