Summary
Avec Les Fleurs du Mal commence la poésie moderne : le lyrisme subjectif s'efface devant cette « impersonnalité volontaire » que Baudelaire a lui-même postulée ; la nature et ses retours cycliques cèdent la place au décor urbain et à ses changements marqués par l'Histoire， et il arrive que le poète accède au beau par l'expérience de la laideur。 Quant au mal affiché dès le titre du recueil， s'il nous apporte la preuve que l'art ici se dénoue de la morale， il n'en préserve pas moins la profonde spiritualité des poèmes。

Ретки су тренуци када сам заинтересована за читање поезије， али је Бодлер свакако изузетак。С обзиром на то да сам се од читања Вајлда опчињена декаденцијом， ова збирка је на мене оставила једнако снажан утисак。 Неке од песама које су ми се нарочито допале јесу ，，Авет"， ，，Радосни мртвац"， ，，Вино убице" и ，，Литанија Сатани"。 Бодлер јесте слика и прилика правог декадента， како на основу бурног живота и статуса ，，уклетог песника" тако и у својој поезији служећи се нетипичним мотивима， крајње екстрав Ретки су тренуци када сам заинтересована за читање поезије， али је Бодлер свакако изузетак。С обзиром на то да сам се од читања Вајлда опчињена декаденцијом， ова збирка је на мене оставила једнако снажан утисак。 Неке од песама које су ми се нарочито допале јесу ，，Авет"， ，，Радосни мртвац"， ，，Вино убице" и ，，Литанија Сатани"。 Бодлер јесте слика и прилика правог декадента， како на основу бурног живота и статуса ，，уклетог песника" тако и у својој поезији служећи се нетипичним мотивима， крајње екстравагантним за тај период。 На граници генија и лудака као и са већином изврсних интелектуалаца， Бодлер пружа поглед на живот из личне перспективе сажет у свега пар строфа - у чему и лежи његова невероватна уметничка способност и наравно петља。Бодлеров лик и дело јесу нешто посебно， сагледавши свеобухватну књижевност и сигурна сам да земљом неће крочити неко једнако луд， неморалан и генијалан као што је то био овај невероватни Француз。 。。。more

I must say that I’m not a poetry fan， just merely a prose enjoyer。 I always found poems being way too pretentious and focused on author’s feelings（at least in the stuff I’ve had a chance to read）。 However， works of Baudelaire hit quite differently - the contrast of beautiful lyrical verses filled with themes of decay， melancholy and fear of loosing some kind of artistic divine insight of the world is something that I found myself to enjoy。 But I finished only half of the book - can’t make myself I must say that I’m not a poetry fan， just merely a prose enjoyer。 I always found poems being way too pretentious and focused on author’s feelings（at least in the stuff I’ve had a chance to read）。 However， works of Baudelaire hit quite differently - the contrast of beautiful lyrical verses filled with themes of decay， melancholy and fear of loosing some kind of artistic divine insight of the world is something that I found myself to enjoy。 But I finished only half of the book - can’t make myself go through all of the romance themed poems， thus 4 stars 。。。more

This collection of poetry concerns many usual themes， but seen through the lens of ugliness。 Heresy， death， depravity， despair， and other traditionally "negative" epithets are recognized as central to the existence and thus beautiful。 Baudelaire should definitely be experienced as he makes a compelling case for the intrinsic equivalence of ugliness and beauty。 This collection of poetry concerns many usual themes， but seen through the lens of ugliness。 Heresy， death， depravity， despair， and other traditionally "negative" epithets are recognized as central to the existence and thus beautiful。 Baudelaire should definitely be experienced as he makes a compelling case for the intrinsic equivalence of ugliness and beauty。 。。。more

I have always avoided reading poetry written in a non-English native language。 I'm definitely not prejudiced against it， but rather， poetry （unlike prose） in intended to use words as precisely as possible。 When reading a novel， simply conveying the meaning is enough， and a good enough translator can do it beautifully。 But with poetry， you're also dealing with pacing， tempo， colloquialisms， and form。 There are entire words in foreign languages that don't have an English equivalent （saudade and we I have always avoided reading poetry written in a non-English native language。 I'm definitely not prejudiced against it， but rather， poetry （unlike prose） in intended to use words as precisely as possible。 When reading a novel， simply conveying the meaning is enough， and a good enough translator can do it beautifully。 But with poetry， you're also dealing with pacing， tempo， colloquialisms， and form。 There are entire words in foreign languages that don't have an English equivalent （saudade and weltschmerz are two of my favorites）， and concepts that translate differently （like how many Spanish-language movies subtitle the phrase "tu madre" as "fuck you"）， so all of these things make translating poetry a near Sisyphusian effort。 （I also have an entire rant about how Romance-language writers should be forbidden from writing haiku， but that's a whole other can of worms。）For all of these reasons， I've avoided reading Baudelaire for years。 And to be sure， there are at least 7 entirely different English translators of Les Fleurs du Mal since the beginning of the 20th century。 For the first 20 poems or so， I read several in tandem， because all of them had something others lacked， and all of them lacked something others had。 Any given translation had slightly different meanings by the time the poem's over。 I hated it。 I eventually decided on a translation that I both liked the best and was the easiest to find a copy of。 Reading foreign poetry is mentally exhausting and I will never ever ever do it again （probably）。I did like Baudelaire a lot， though， and his genius still shines through， even if a lot of it is beyond my full comprehension。 I'm glad I read him， and I never will again。 。。。more
