Summary

The third and final book of the brilliant and captivating Trickster Trilogy, from the bestselling author of the Scotiabank Giller-prize finalist Son of a Trickster and Trickster Drift。 The powerful resolution of a story that has already sparked the new CBC-TV series Trickster and inspired the debaters on Canada Reads

Jared, teenaged trouble magnet, wakes up in a hospital bed feeling like hell。 Not for the first time。

Some of the people he loves--the ones who are deaf to the magic that swirls around him--assume he fell off the wagon after a tough year of sobriety。 They think that's why movers found him naked, dangerously dehydrated and confused in the basement of his mom's old house in Kitimat。 The truth for Jared is so much worse。 He finally knows for sure that he has no hope of ever being normal because he really is the son of Wee'git, a Trickster, and he's won the magic lottery--he is the only one of Wee'git's 535 children who is a Trickster too。 He is actually in such bad shape because he was forced into mortal combat with his father's sister, Aunt Georgina, a maniacal ogress hungry for his power。 In the struggle, he transported her and her posse of shape-shifting coy wolves to another dimension where the coy wolves all died。 Now Georgina doesn't only want to turn him into her slave, she wants revenge on his whole family。

There's more bad news: the only person in his life who is happy that he's a Trickster is his ex, Sarah。 Everyone else he loves is either pissed with him or in danger from the dark forces he's accidentally unleashed in their world。 His mother Maggie, a hard-partying, gun-toting, tough-as-nails witch, resents like hell that Jared has taken after his father, but she is also determined that no one is going to hurt her boy。 For Maggie it's simple--Kill or be killed, bucko--and soon Jared is at the centre of an all-out war。 A horrible place to be for the sweetest Trickster there's ever been, one whose first instinct is not mischief and mind games but to make the world around him a kinder, safer, place。

What an outstanding finale to an incredible trilogy。 I couldn’t put it down, I finished it in 24 hours。 The characters continue to be so complex - I almost would dare say that many of the characters here are beyond 3-dimensional: I feel like I would meet them in any city, they feel that real to me。 Robinson doesn’t mince words or thoughts and she lets that freedom ooze through to her characters。I think this is my favourite modern trilogy。 Robinson ranks up there with modern fantasy writers like What an outstanding finale to an incredible trilogy。 I couldn’t put it down, I finished it in 24 hours。 The characters continue to be so complex - I almost would dare say that many of the characters here are beyond 3-dimensional: I feel like I would meet them in any city, they feel that real to me。 Robinson doesn’t mince words or thoughts and she lets that freedom ooze through to her characters。I think this is my favourite modern trilogy。 Robinson ranks up there with modern fantasy writers like Neil Gaiman and Charles de Lint for me。 。。。more

I will say, though that I found the first few chapters a bit slow。 I hesitate to say anything remotely negative about this though。 GOSH PLEASE READ THIS SERIES!!! 。。。more

I'm a fan of Eden Robinson, and overall, I enjoyed her Trickster series。 But with Return of the Trickster, I'm torn between liking it and not liking it -- I'm not quite sure。 First, it had been so long since I had read Trickster Drift (over two years!), that I couldn't remember all the details and who was who, so I was lost (it also didn't help that in the Trickster TV series -- which I highly recommend, by the way -- Sophia was portrayed as Maggie's mother, not Phil's mother), and there was too I'm a fan of Eden Robinson, and overall, I enjoyed her Trickster series。 But with Return of the Trickster, I'm torn between liking it and not liking it -- I'm not quite sure。 First, it had been so long since I had read Trickster Drift (over two years!), that I couldn't remember all the details and who was who, so I was lost (it also didn't help that in the Trickster TV series -- which I highly recommend, by the way -- Sophia was portrayed as Maggie's mother, not Phil's mother), and there was too much magic for my liking。 (Bob the octopus "ghost"?!) And the ending, WTF? It was almost as bad as the ending in Stephen King's It; it seemed like Robinson didn't quite know how to end a good story。Overall, it was an enjoyable series, and I may re-read it in the future。 I give Return of the Trickster somewhere between 3 and 3。5 stars -- I'm not quite sure。 One niggling question that I had throughout the book -- what the hell are coy wolves?! 。。。more

Good read, but I felt it didn't hit the mark the first two did。 I felt the "epilogue" felt a bit contrived。 Eden Robinson is still one of the best Canadian authors you'll read and I still heartily recommend this last Trickster novel。 Good read, but I felt it didn't hit the mark the first two did。 I felt the "epilogue" felt a bit contrived。 Eden Robinson is still one of the best Canadian authors you'll read and I still heartily recommend this last Trickster novel。 。。。more

Eden Robinson has written each and every character masterfully。 Every。 Single。 One。 Each of them adds something to the story that feels vital, and each has layers of complexity that build, book over book。 If you met a character in Son Of A Trickster, they were not that same character in Trickster Drift, and they grew again in Return Of The Trickster。 Somehow those often monumental changes never felt forced, but contained a sense of urgency。 Like they could do nothing else, because their actions Eden Robinson has written each and every character masterfully。 Every。 Single。 One。 Each of them adds something to the story that feels vital, and each has layers of complexity that build, book over book。 If you met a character in Son Of A Trickster, they were not that same character in Trickster Drift, and they grew again in Return Of The Trickster。 Somehow those often monumental changes never felt forced, but contained a sense of urgency。 Like they could do nothing else, because their actions were so true to who they were, even if those actions broke my heart or made me want to yell at them through the pages! It says something for Robinson's writing that her 'Epilogue-ish' felt so incredibly necessary。 In those pages she gave us one final glimpse of how her characters move on now that the story is finished。 I wish each one of those characters had their own book, and each of their epilogue moments was just an invitation to another Eden Robinson trilogy。 This final book of the series was a violent, heartpounding, spectacular culmination。 。。。more

I loved this book, and this series。 It's bittersweet。 I wanted to know so much more。 For some readers familiar with fantasy, the 'magic system,' is nonsensical。 For people familiar with mythological stories, this is a familiar, unbalanced sort of magic that matches with those stories。 Juxtaposing it in a modern world takes this trilogy into a very Lovecraftian, Stephen King realm。 This book introduces you to new characters, new monsters, and new aspects of the Otherworld。 It's basic world-buildi I loved this book, and this series。 It's bittersweet。 I wanted to know so much more。 For some readers familiar with fantasy, the 'magic system,' is nonsensical。 For people familiar with mythological stories, this is a familiar, unbalanced sort of magic that matches with those stories。 Juxtaposing it in a modern world takes this trilogy into a very Lovecraftian, Stephen King realm。 This book introduces you to new characters, new monsters, and new aspects of the Otherworld。 It's basic world-building, just a few details, but enough to peak your interest in what else could be told in this world。 At the end, I will reread, and hope there are more stories to come。 。。。more

brb mourning the end of my favourite series ever - i read this so slowly to try to prolong it hahahai think the second book in the trilogy stands as my favourite, but i love these characters and this world so much there was no way i wasn’t going to adore this book as well。 this definitely felt like the most fever dream-y of all three。 a lot going on, much confusion in my small brain, and a rushed ending and very tied-up epilogue mean this wasn’t quite a full five stars from me。 still, i don’t ca brb mourning the end of my favourite series ever - i read this so slowly to try to prolong it hahahai think the second book in the trilogy stands as my favourite, but i love these characters and this world so much there was no way i wasn’t going to adore this book as well。 this definitely felt like the most fever dream-y of all three。 a lot going on, much confusion in my small brain, and a rushed ending and very tied-up epilogue mean this wasn’t quite a full five stars from me。 still, i don’t care。 i love jared and i love eden robinson。 。。。more

Eden Robinson's writing is amazing。 Her stories are rich and fun and fast moving。 The character of Jared was superb; his mix of humour and emotion made him a deep and caring soul。 His endless love and deep feelings for his friends and extended family drove the books forward。 However, I did find this book rushed and at times confusing。 I have to reread all 3 books to keep all the characters straight。I loved the world Robinson created, the writing was rich and the settings were detailed enough to Eden Robinson's writing is amazing。 Her stories are rich and fun and fast moving。 The character of Jared was superb; his mix of humour and emotion made him a deep and caring soul。 His endless love and deep feelings for his friends and extended family drove the books forward。 However, I did find this book rushed and at times confusing。 I have to reread all 3 books to keep all the characters straight。I loved the world Robinson created, the writing was rich and the settings were detailed enough to place me in their world。 She didn't shy away from some of the very difficult world Jared lived in-with the residual, generational trauma and the dysfunctional world he had to deal with。 I would love to find out how Jared grows into his Trickster role。 I suspect the role would evolve as he learns and asserts his personality。I'll be reading everything Robinson writes! 。。。more

The best Indigenous fantasy horror comedy you'll read all year! Wildy over the top, but mostly stays on the rails。 I didn't expect while reading the first book that this is where we'd end up, but I'm definitely not mad about it。 The best Indigenous fantasy horror comedy you'll read all year! Great final act to a genuinely fun series。 Loved the character arcs。 This felt like a more nuanced Avengers with Indigenous Witches, Tricksters, “Wild Men” and genuinely frightening antagonists。 If we can’t have a tv show anymore, based on this universe, maybe a movie, animated series, or a graphic novel?

Great wrap up to the Trickster anthology。 A bit darker than the previous two。 Jared is challenged more than in the first two books and has a varied and interesting characters both to help him and trying to destroy him。 The two characters that hit the mark with me are Grandma Nita and the Wild Man of the Woods。 Return is fantasy but every now and again Eden drops in science and cosmology, which are icing on the cupcakes in this book。 Read all three,

I just love this trilogy。 Is it technically perfect? Not at all。 But it is so incredibly original and engaging。 It is everything。 It is funny and scary and suspenseful and violent and disturbing and emotional and fun and sad and weird and happy and magical and every other adjective one could use to describe a story all at the same time。 On the one hand it's a story about Jared but on the other hand it's a story about all the badass magical grannies in Jared's life and I'm here for it。I don't rea I just love this trilogy。 Is it technically perfect? I want to shout my recommendation for this trilogy from the rooftops。 。。。more

4。5 stars, rounded up to 5。Man, Eden Robinson is great。 I love Jared, who, despite some rough growing up years, is full of love and care for those around him, and determination to do the right thing。 Also the propensity for terrible decisions!
