Summary

Vendredi 7 novembre。

A very early Maigret story - a really good one。 A small sea port, Maigret arrives alone to investigate an evening murder outside the local inn。 No witnesses。。。

Maigret investigates a series of mysterious crimes in the Breton town of Concarneau。 Before each event, a yellow dog has been seen in the vicinity and panic is beginning to spread。 Maigret, however, finds his attention being drawn in a different direction。This is another gem featuring the laconic pipe-smoking detective。 He observes and analyses the people around him while others jump to the expected (wrong) conclusions。 Despite his moodiness, his wisdom and compassion make him unique。 I really l Maigret investigates a series of mysterious crimes in the Breton town of Concarneau。 Before each event, a yellow dog has been seen in the vicinity and panic is beginning to spread。 Maigret, however, finds his attention being drawn in a different direction。This is another gem featuring the laconic pipe-smoking detective。 He observes and analyses the people around him while others jump to the expected (wrong) conclusions。 Despite his moodiness, his wisdom and compassion make him unique。 I really like the way Simenon can capture the essence of people and places with brevity and style。This was a touching and atmospheric story from a master storyteller。 。。。more

I enjoyed The Yellow Dog。 It’s a very early Maigret, but Simenon is now hitting his stride, I think。Maigret is called to a small coastal town out of season, where a mysterious shooting has taken place, followed by a number of other curious incidents, including the arrival of the eponymous yellow dog。 The mystery is well constructed and involves a number of the town’s prominent citizens – who have a strong idea of their prominence。 It is an excellent portrait of small-town politics and social pos I enjoyed The Yellow Dog。 It’s a very early Maigret, but Simenon is now hitting his stride, I think。Maigret is called to a small coastal town out of season, where a mysterious shooting has taken place, followed by a number of other curious incidents, including the arrival of the eponymous yellow dog。 The mystery is well constructed and involves a number of the town’s prominent citizens – who have a strong idea of their prominence。 It is an excellent portrait of small-town politics and social positioning, with quite a frank exposé of some of the sexual mores in that time and place。 The characters are very well drawn and we see Maigret’s taciturn and – almost – imperturbable demeanour while listening, thinking and refusing to be influenced by authority。 It is a pleasure to read。These new Penguin translations – this one by Linda Asher – have made all the difference for me when reading Maigret。 I found the 50s and 60s translations I first read to be rather stodgy, but these read very well。 I am enjoying slowly working my way through the series and I can recommend The Yellow Dog。 。。。more

I really am enjoying these Maigret stories。 This one starts with a shooting of a man who has had too much to drink, and on leaving the café where he has been drinking, decides to smoke a cigar。 To remove himself from the blowing wind he steps inside the front of an empty building。 Here, he is shot and thought to have been murdered。 Maigret is then called in and observes the drinking companions of the shot man。 Very soon, another potential murder is committed by poisoning the customers, but this I really am enjoying these Maigret stories。 This one starts with a shooting of a man who has had too much to drink, and on leaving the café where he has been drinking, decides to smoke a cigar。 To remove himself from the blowing wind he steps inside the front of an empty building。 Here, he is shot and thought to have been murdered。 Maigret is then called in and observes the drinking companions of the shot man。 Very soon, another potential murder is committed by poisoning the customers, but this is is stopped in time。 Maigret is repeatedly told he is not doing enough to halt these attempts, but as is Maigret's way, he takes his time and comes up with the answer to all。 The solution to the crime is explained, but although that is always well done, it is the atmosphere of the places descriptions, and his way of weighing up the the possible subjects, that is the best of these books。 。。。more

A disappointing first step into the world of Georges Simenon。 I think I was expecting something more atmospheric and distinctive, but The Yellow Dog is a short book with a lot of plot, tersely written in a pulp fiction style that is serviceable but lacks panache。 It’s extremely ordinary and not a little dull。“'It’s amazing!' sighed the detective。”'Would that it were', he snapped。 Outside the night was dark… A disappointing first step into the world of Georges Simenon。 I think I was expecting something more atmospheric and distinctive, but The Yellow Dog is a short book with a lot of plot, tersely written in a pulp fiction style that is serviceable but lacks panache。 It’s extremely ordinary and not a little dull。“'It’s amazing!' sighed the detective。”'Would that it were', he snapped。 Outside the night was dark… 。。。more

The Yellow Dog follows Detective Maigret and his pursuit in solving a murder in some french town。 I picked this up while I was shelving some books at work and was automatically attracted to the Wes Andersoney premise and the penguin random house logo (which never disappoints me)。 But it wasn't that enjoyable。 To be truly honest, I'm still not sure who committed those murders。 3。1/5 The Yellow Dog follows Detective Maigret and his pursuit in solving a murder in some french town。 I picked this up while I was shelving some books at work and was automatically attracted to the Wes Andersoney premise and the penguin random house logo (which never disappoints me)。 But it wasn't that enjoyable。 To be truly honest, I'm still not sure who committed those murders。 3。1/5 。。。more

Another great early Maigret tale was written in 1931 a year Simenon was particularly prolific。 This was filmed the next year as Le Chien Jaune but no one seems to have subtitled it in English。

A seemingly random shooting in a small French village leads to additional violence and crimes。 Chief Inspector Maigret navigates an increasingly fearful village and a plethora of unlikely suspects to uncover an act of treachery and betrayal。 Great narration, and a satisfying resolution。

Ilse Wouters

Rob Manwaring

Back to Maigret - they are good, and addictive。 This - (sort of) spoiler alert has more of a happier ending than previous ones。 There is still the underlying brutality and harshness at play, but it gallops along nicely。

It's interesting that this book was published in 1931。 I enjoyed reading it and discovering that cocaine, and just the liquor, was smuggled from Europe to America even in those days。 It is a short book and you don't have to wait too long for the denouement。 Fast and convincing dialogues, easy-to-imagine places and situations。 A nice change from what I normally read。 It's interesting that this book was published in 1931。 I enjoyed reading it and discovering that cocaine, and just the liquor, was smuggled from Europe to America even in those days。 It is a short book and you don't have to wait too long for the denouement。 Fast and convincing dialogues, easy-to-imagine places and situations。 A nice change from what I normally read。 。。。more

It's a good detective novel, but old so misogyny galore。 There are few female characters and they fill the typical female roles。 Although the ending is unexpected I didn't really love Maigret's detecting style。 It's a good detective novel, but old so misogyny galore。 There are few female characters and they fill the typical female roles。 Although the ending is unexpected I didn't really love Maigret's detecting style。 。。。more
