Summary

After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson, now available in paperback。

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder。 After catching a killer at her high school, she's back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer。

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls--the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders。 Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display。 The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case。

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy。 Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders。

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners。 When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for。 The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims。 This time, Stevie may not make it out alive。

I’m torn。 😩🫠I wanted to love this book, but alas, I didn’t。 Stevie Bell is a super sleuth and along with her friends, Janelle, Nate, and David they make a great team。 Stevie ends up at a summer camp to solve a murder mystery from the 70s。 Not just any murder mystery though -there were 4 bodies。 😳 Carson is the new owner of the camp and knows Stevie is the one for the job。 A threatening start has Stevie wondering who knows her so well。 Can she blow the lid off this box -case- before anyone else e I’m torn。 😩🫠I wanted to love this book, but alas, I didn’t。 Stevie Bell is a super sleuth and along with her friends, Janelle, Nate, and David they make a great team。 Stevie ends up at a summer camp to solve a murder mystery from the 70s。 Not just any murder mystery though -there were 4 bodies。 😳 Carson is the new owner of the camp and knows Stevie is the one for the job。 A threatening start has Stevie wondering who knows her so well。 Can she blow the lid off this box -case- before anyone else ends up dead…。?? ☠️Without spoiling anything -there were a lot of plot holes。 Like, A LOT。 I hashed this out with a friend and there were a lot of gaps and nothing we could have filled in。 The reader didn’t know much of anything until the last 10% of the book and by then I was kind of like “get to the point。” Moral of this story -don’t do drugs in the woods in the middle of the night。 🙃 。。。more

I don’t think Maureen Johnson knew who the killer was til we knew who the killer was。 That’s how many plot holes were in this book。 It was entertaining, though。

Carson felt like he was only there to get Stevie to the camp but otherwise was an unnecessary character kinda。 I feel like she could’ve made him just be the owner that wanted things solved rather than a podcast creator。 Stevie never really did anything at the camp either haha and didn’t really seem to be expected to。 I know she went there completely under the reasoning of solving these murders but she spent more time at the camp before campers got there than ever after that。 Also, David was only supposed to be there for like five days but then he just never left haha? Like did we solve this at the very start of summer or did you quit your job David? These are all just random things that felt lacking a bit, but I really did like this book a lot!I loved Nate and Stevie’s friendship in this throughout。 Nate was there through all of Stevie’s nutty choices and made sure she was always taken care of。 I liked the characters we got to meet from the town too。 I honestly hAted when Allison died。 That suckeddd。 I never even really try to guess whodunnit; I just let the book take me on its ride, but I tried on this on kinda, and I could not have guessed Patty or her dad。 I tried to think of little characters that were only mentioned a few times but kinda totally forgot about him lol! Someone tell me if I can get an ARC of the 5th book pleaseee! 😭🥺 。。。more

Another great Truly Devious book! The characters’ witty banter lightens the mood and none of the scenes are too graphic。 This murder mystery would appropriate for 13+ (maybe younger depending on the maturity of the reader)。

This was JUST what I needed today。 Good news: you don’t need to remember much about any of the characters or plot to enjoy this one- it was super easy slipping back into this universe!

This book has managed to singlehandedly reignite my love for YA mysteries。 Johnsons ability to fully submerge you into the story is magnificent, and the feelings of anxiety and excitement that she manages to evoke in you are spectacular。 I enjoyed this book so much that I actually had to force myself to put it down, just so that i could savour every minute of it。 Do yourself a favour and pick this book up as soon as possible!

i wish i liked this book more then i did, i was so excited for the summer camp vibes etc but it didn’t really do much。 i’m still excited for the next book tho!!

Amazing! Brilliant! Stunning! I know there are some hiccups with the logic and how the information is presented but I don't really care。 I loved how enthralled I got with the mystery! The characters continue to delight and the theme of a 1970's summer camp murder was so much fun to explore。 This is such a thrilling page turner and probably my favorite of the series so far。 Such a fun experience! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 If I’m being completely honest, this book was a bit underwhelming。 Coming off of reading the previous trilogy, this continuation of the characters lives seemed super cool。 The whole camp murder idea, while sometimes overused, can be a blank canvas for all sorts of customization。 That being said, I didn’t feel as though the story played into the case as much as it could have。 Based of how the last case took 3 full books to unfold completely, and this case, being presented as having a way more com If I’m being completely honest, this book was a bit underwhelming。 Coming off of reading the previous trilogy, this continuation of the characters lives seemed super cool。 The whole camp murder idea, while sometimes overused, can be a blank canvas for all sorts of customization。 That being said, I didn’t feel as though the story played into the case as much as it could have。 Based of how the last case took 3 full books to unfold completely, and this case, being presented as having a way more complex backstory, only unfolded over the span of one book。 And not even really at that because the first half of the book genuinely felt like the the first of the series as a whole so I really just expected it to play out as the lest case did, timing-wise, but it instantly picked up at full-speed。 Not to mention most of the detailing was lost in the chaotic frenzy of rapid-fire events。 However, while the book seemed a bit lacking in areas, I still really enjoyed seeing the characters grow and come together through some wonderful writing。 。。。more

I’m so delighted that I stumbled across Stevie Bell’s universe and I am grateful that Maureen Johnson continues to weave tales in this world。 The characters have become beloved to me and the mysteries always keep me plowing ahead。 I read this book in a weekend, which I think speaks volumes to how much the story sucked me in。 If you’re the kind of human who enjoys a twisty decades-old summer camp murder mystery AND a group of close-knit friends solving said mystery, this one is for you! Loved it!

I loved getting to be back in Stevie Bell’s world again! And it was a fun change to see her and her friends solving a mystery somewhere other than Ellingham Academy。 The summer camp setting was perfect and the murders were …… gruesome。 This may be technically YA, but it’s not for the faint of heart ~ definitely more graphic than most adult cozies I’ve read。 I’m excited to read the next Stevie Bell mystery that’s coming out soonish!(source: library print copy)

Enjoyed the book and loved the characters, however, the plot, not so much。

I really enjoyed this book。 Il admit the ending went in a direction I wasn’t expecting and therefore it loses a star for me there。 While it is believable and I admit a great twist I was hoping for something different。 This was an easy read that was fantastically atmospheric at times。 It makes for a great autumn read and I would recommend to those wanting to get behind a good mystery。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 huge rant upcoming - it sounds like i really hated this book but i gave it 2 stars b/c i do think the author knows how to build up a mystery especially w/ the flashbacks。there were many things in this book that made you go "hmm this makes absolutely no sense but I guess we'll go along with it" including:- stevie's parents not even being a little bit suspicious about some random stranger inviting their daughter to some random summer camp when she has demonstrated absolutely no interested in campi huge rant upcoming - it sounds like i really hated this book but i gave it 2 stars b/c i do think the author knows how to build up a mystery especially w/ the flashbacks。there were many things in this book that made you go "hmm this makes absolutely no sense but I guess we'll go along with it" including:- stevie's parents not even being a little bit suspicious about some random stranger inviting their daughter to some random summer camp when she has demonstrated absolutely no interested in camping or the outdoors- carson in general。 some rich dude who made money off of boxes and bags and is bankrolling a high schooler to solve a murder mystery case- stevie getting hired as a camp counselor and then getting mad when people expect her to actually do her job as a camp counselor- there was no point including david in this story besides to obviously set up the setting for the next book。 dude's not a great character but i felt kinda bad for him lol- the whole nazi reveal LMFAO。 don't even know where to start on this one。 ok sure dude was an undercover nazi spy。 fine。 but for a spy, his plans SUCKED。 what was he even expecting sabrina to do, turn him into the FBI? all she really had was a conversation she partially heard w/ crappy german。 who would believe her, let's be real。 and if you're a spy, why would your first plan to kill multiple people in such a noticeable way????? especially you only "needed" to kill one of them!!!!!!!!!!!!- i have no idea how stevie figured out patty's plan。 literally her big reveal was reading sabrina's diary (90% of it she did not have to read and embarrass sabrina's ex with) and then say a bunch of random shit and goad patty into confessing。 and tbh it worked, which is embarrassing for a daughter of a nazi spy!!! - did allison really need to die? felt like no one cared about her death。 think it would've been might more interesting to have them work together more to find the diary or something 。。。more
