Jane Eyre!!!!!!I have not read a better romance novel。 It's not entirely/mainly romance though。 It's a story with a seemingly simple plot, but told in such an interesting manner。 Jane Eyre!!!!!!I have not read a better romance novel。 It's not entirely/mainly romance though。 It's a story with a seemingly simple plot, but told in such an interesting manner。 。。。more

Jane’s story provides the elements of a great story, a terrible childhood that produces an independent woman in the 19th century, mystery, a mansion and the possibility of an unrequited love。 It took me 2 years to finish, picking up faster reads to take a break。 The old English wasn’t easy for me but once I was invested in Jane’s story I so enjoyed the anticipation。 I look forward to reading it again, a little faster next time。 😅I also loved the Christian aspect of the book and found the very di Jane’s story provides the elements of a great story, a terrible childhood that produces an independent woman in the 19th century, mystery, a mansion and the possibility of an unrequited love。 It took me 2 years to finish, picking up faster reads to take a break。 The old English wasn’t easy for me but once I was invested in Jane’s story I so enjoyed the anticipation。 I look forward to reading it again, a little faster next time。 😅I also loved the Christian aspect of the book and found the very different Christian characters quite interesting in their portrayal。 No one is perfect but that didn’t sway Jane’s belief in God。 。。。more

Danielle

A good classic book。

So interesting this was the first popular fiction book in first person…。 Pretty good! Couldn’t have ended faster, but overall interesting to see how women thought back then。

This is my first english classic in a very long time。 It was hard to read, because I was forced to focus in order to understand the complexity of emotions and notions the author described, but that didn't bother me。 The writing was immaculate。 I cherish Eyre as if we are sisters and i don't know man, I just want to hug her。 This is my first english classic in a very long time。 It was hard to read, because I was forced to focus in order to understand the complexity of emotions and notions the author described, but that didn't bother me。 The writing was immaculate。 I cherish Eyre as if we are sisters and i don't know man, I just want to hug her。 。。。more

Problematic, and quite frankly, boring。)The novel regains some virtue by being a Romantic horror, and on a surface level it does that well。 But the baseline for what creates that horror once again becomes problematic。 To put it bluntly, this novel is incredibly racist。I understand that this is an old novel, and I understand that this is to be 'expected'。 But if you aren't studying this book for some reason beyond basic enjoyment, Jane Eyre is going to be an upsetting and offensive read for many。 Bertha Mason exists almost solely as an 'evil' or 'bad' foil to the religious, white, good-girl Jane。 Her death is entirely why Jane is able to succeed。 She is demonized and described in an incredibly uncomfortable, colonialist lens。 She is 'mad' because she refuses to conform to her white, Christian society。 No character is ever punished for the horrible sins they commit against her, (such as Rochester's years of abuse)—if anything, they are rewarded。 It is horror based simply off of the racial other, and almost nothing else。 We can learn much about the portrayal of madness through this novel, but it is incredibly important to address the novel's issues whilst doing so。 We cannot simply ignore it。As you can probably gather from this scathing review, no, I do not recommend this novel。 You may have to work with it in college if you're a student like myself—that comes with the territory。 But for basic enjoyment? Just。。。no。 。。。more

If it weren't for the writing, I would have dropped this book midway。 I've always been curious about the supposed 'mystery' in this book。 It turned out to be not that grand。 I kind of saw it coming, something to do with Grace Pool。 But the writing man。 The way Brontë writes is like poetry, like a lullaby to my ears。 I quite enjoyed it just for that FACT。This book is like the blueprint for every stereotypical movie/ plot twist。 It's easy to love this book。 I despised the cheesy exchange of lines If it weren't for the writing, I would have dropped this book midway。 I've always been curious about the supposed 'mystery' in this book。 It turned out to be not that grand。 I kind of saw it coming, something to do with Grace Pool。 But the writing man。 The way Brontë writes is like poetry, like a lullaby to my ears。 I quite enjoyed it just for that FACT。This book is like the blueprint for every stereotypical movie/ plot twist。 It's easy to love this book。 I despised the cheesy exchange of lines between Jane and Mr。 Rochester but I know that's just me。 Mr。 Rochester wasn't a great character even, especially at the beginning。 He seemed like a bully。 At his 40's but he mostly acted like a highschooler who had a crush and would bully to get her attention。 Not cute。 He wasn't wise for his age too。 I would have loved this book if only I had fallen in love with his character。But the end was cute, I'll give it that。 It made me smile。 。。。more
