A perfect book for chess beginners and very easy to understand。

Took me from 300 to 700 Elo in only a little more than a month。 Chernev is a fantastic Author too, making the mathematic notation somehow fun and enjoyable to read (I'm pretty sure he even calls a couple moves retarded throughout the book)。Can definitely recommend it as I was recommended it: this should be your first chess book。 Took me from 300 to 700 Elo in only a little more than a month。 Chernev is a fantastic Author too, making the mathematic notation somehow fun and enjoyable to read (I'm pretty sure he even calls a couple moves retarded throughout the book)。Can definitely recommend it as I was recommended it: this should be your first chess book。 。。。more

One of my favorite chess books。 It teaches tactical and positional approaches without taking you into deep analysis。 I strongly recommend this book to everyone who want to develop their way of playing。

Although the ideas offered are repetitive, it never bores one to run through the same move over and over again。 Giving a step-by step rundown of each move together with a few possible lines that may come out of it makes Logical Chess Move by Move highly instructive and detailed。 All aspects from the Opening to Middlegame to Endgame are covered, and Chernev offers key ideas and principles that every chess player should abide to in 99% of all chess games。

Brilliantly written。 Perfect for intermediates。 Really fun to see what the experts were doing, and nice short tips to improve。 Must re-read。

Logical Chess Move by Move is a great introductory game collection book for an initial club player。 Chernev explains each move in detail in simple terms for any player that has a basic understanding of chess strategy to comprehend。 The book doesn't feature the most compelling games, but rather games where a player makes a strategic/positional error, which Chernev highlights, then demonstrates how the winning player recognizes this weakness, develops a plan to exploit the weakness, and carries ou Logical Chess Move by Move is a great introductory game collection book for an initial club player。 Chernev explains each move in detail in simple terms for any player that has a basic understanding of chess strategy to comprehend。 The book doesn't feature the most compelling games, but rather games where a player makes a strategic/positional error, which Chernev highlights, then demonstrates how the winning player recognizes this weakness, develops a plan to exploit the weakness, and carries out their plan。 Great insight for the level of chess where material advantages do not occur, and you need to understand how to exploit positional weaknesses to fight for a victory。One downside to this book, I found a lot of the games were lost in opening inaccuracies。 Not, full blown blunders in the opening, but more passive moves that gave one sound the initiative, and that side played aggressively to capitalize on their opponents' opening misstep。 Highly recommend to any player under 1500 as a first game collection book。 。。。more

A very nice book that explains the fundamentals of positional play。 The games in it are a bit old, so beware that the playing style does not correspond to the current way chess is played。 This does not necessarily have to be a drawback, however, as it is most probably good pedagogy to start with those older games before studying modern games。 I wish I had read this book a few years earlier, as it contains a lot of simple but useful advise。 Every move is explained which is usually a good thing as A very nice book that explains the fundamentals of positional play。 The games in it are a bit old, so beware that the playing style does not correspond to the current way chess is played。 This does not necessarily have to be a drawback, however, as it is most probably good pedagogy to start with those older games before studying modern games。 I wish I had read this book a few years earlier, as it contains a lot of simple but useful advise。 Every move is explained which is usually a good thing as the complete reasoning process can be followed。 But the comments on 1。e4 or 1。d4 were a bit annoying near the end of the book。 Also, I think the title is inaccurate。 I read this in someone else's review that the title should be: 'Principled Chess move by move' as the explanations are not so much based on logic, but on Steinitzian classical principles。 I agree with this completely。 All in all a very nice introduction, but it is meant for people who know little of positional play and it should be followed up with more modern treatments to understand present-day positional chess。 。。。more

An excellent book。 Humorous and well-written。 Key principles are drilled throughout which is very useful over the 34 games analysed。 I can only give credit to this book for finally mating an opponent a lot higher rated than me who I had formally not even presented a challenge to。 Don't hesitate, buy it and take your time with it。 The rewards are there for you in the long run。 An excellent book。 Humorous and well-written。 Key principles are drilled throughout which is very useful over the 34 games analysed。 I can only give credit to this book for finally mating an opponent a lot higher rated than me who I had formally not even presented a challenge to。 Don't hesitate, buy it and take your time with it。 The rewards are there for you in the long run。 。。。more

Cooking apples will make your stomach ache if you eat them like dessert apples, but they look the same。 I intended to gobble up some new hobby practice, but the challenge of reading through these 33 games for a beginner player such as myself was a shock of 5months! Quite an overrated book。 Three stars, and that's probably generous。Many of the games are very low quality。 For example, five of the first eleven games end in 17 moves。 Surely, that indicates that the loser made a terrible blunder。 It would be quite instructive to the novice player if Chernev pointed out these blunders, but he doesn't。 Instead he spends half a page telling us how wonderful 1。e4 and 1。。。。e5 are, for the 11th time。 Useless。The last 10 games, where he is borrowing the annotations of Quite an overrated book。 Three stars, and that's probably generous。Many of the games are very low quality。 For example, five of the first eleven games end in 17 moves。 Surely, that indicates that the loser made a terrible blunder。 It would be quite instructive to the novice player if Chernev pointed out these blunders, but he doesn't。 Instead he spends half a page telling us how wonderful 1。e4 and 1。。。。e5 are, for the 11th time。 Useless。The last 10 games, where he is borrowing the annotations of other players and writers, are probably the only games worth going through in this book。 。。。more

Great compendium of chess games by some of the best GM of the past century。 A bit old-dated with some repetitive explanations (d4, e4。。。) but following the games is very interesting。 It has many diagrams that help you not to get lost after several moves, unless you have a visual memory (which I don't)。 Great compendium of chess games by some of the best GM of the past century。 A bit old-dated with some repetitive explanations (d4, e4。。。) but following the games is very interesting。 It has many diagrams that help you not to get lost after several moves, unless you have a visual memory (which I don't)。 。。。more

This is a great primer for beginners about thinking positionally in chess。 Chernev has a way with words and always finds something interesting to say about the first move, even though through the course of the 33 games he mostly has words to say about the King's Pawn (1。e4), Queen's Pawn (1。d4), and English Opening (1。c4)。 Chernev does not repeat himself, but drums up new insight and wit every time the first move is repeated。 Beside that, he offers a lot of good advice for beginners (rated below This is a great primer for beginners about thinking positionally in chess。 Chernev has a way with words and always finds something interesting to say about the first move, even though through the course of the 33 games he mostly has words to say about the King's Pawn (1。e4), Queen's Pawn (1。d4), and English Opening (1。c4)。 Chernev does not repeat himself, but drums up new insight and wit every time the first move is repeated。 Beside that, he offers a lot of good advice for beginners (rated below 1000 on chess。com / 1300 lichess。org probably) and even intermediate players (rated 1000-1700 chess。com / 1300-2000 lichess。org)。The book is cut roughly into three sections: the kingside attack, the Queen's Pawn Opening, and "The Chess Master Explains His Ideas" (most nebulously titled, but it's about the "slow" wins, where the material on the board is usually equal but strategically won for one side, and the stronger player nurses his advantage into a full point)。 You see how a lead in development leads to an attack, how the battle for space affects the entire course of the game, and numerous endgames by World Champion Jose Raul Capablanca where simple and elegant play rule the day。In short, it's a good read, with 33 games from Chernev's time or before (remember this book was written in the 50s)。 You're not here for cutting edge theory, so some of the analysis won't hold up under scrutiny, but there's still a lot of chess wisdom here waiting to be tapped for the chess player who wants to learn。 。。。more

This book is a good refresher on the basics, or "general principles", of the game。 I found it helpful after realizing I wasn't always taking all the fundamentals seriously。 Naturally, these principles do not strictly apply in every situation that can occur at any point in a game。 In any case, the games provide good, clear examples of all the general basic rules of chess strategy, along with showing just how these principles apply during the games, and how they are effective in the course of game This book is a good refresher on the basics, or "general principles", of the game。 I found it helpful after realizing I wasn't always taking all the fundamentals seriously。 Naturally, these principles do not strictly apply in every situation that can occur at any point in a game。 In any case, the games provide good, clear examples of all the general basic rules of chess strategy, along with showing just how these principles apply during the games, and how they are effective in the course of games。I would recommend this book as a good book for beginners, and also for the experienced player who wants to refresh him or herself on the basics of our beloved game!(I should add that the book doesn't take as long for most people to finish as it did me, because I didn't start reading it and studying the games on a regular or daily basis until the last couple of weeks。 I would think that many people could finish it within a month。 。。。more

Irving Chernev’s approach of revealing masters’ thought process during the game of chess… that’s the best part of this book。

Good overview of sound principles that crop up in many games。

Solid strategies for all 3 stages of the game。 Great read!

Pretty good, would recommend getting the newer notation version though 👌 as the old version takes awhile ti get used to。

Clear explanations with an illustrative selection of games featuring a variety of openings。

What an amazing chess writer Chernev was! His prose was like poetry! He essentially analyzed and annotated 33 brilliant games from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s! Collection of games which the author describes in detail so one can follow along and learn。 Considered one of the great books of chess for beginners。 And it is highly instructive。Small caveat in having a lot of repetition by being based on 33 non-related game descriptions and everytime for example the Queens Gambits first moves get explained again and again(felt like at least 8 times)。

Really cool resource for strong beginners starting to think about the game more strategically。 Chernev's annotations are extremely detailed yet accessible, with the games well-chosen to illustrate a variety of openings, positions, and attacking concepts。 Helped me take the first step toward critically thinking about the key features of a given position (beyond simple mechanics) and understanding how a game is likely to evolve。Some of the commentary doesn't 100% hold up to modern engine analysis Really cool resource for strong beginners starting to think about the game more strategically。 Chernev's annotations are extremely detailed yet accessible, with the games well-chosen to illustrate a variety of openings, positions, and attacking concepts。 Helped me take the first step toward critically thinking about the key features of a given position (beyond simple mechanics) and understanding how a game is likely to evolve。Some of the commentary doesn't 100% hold up to modern engine analysis - in particular, I think Chernev errs a bit too conservative about pushing pawns on the kingside - but it doesn't seriously compromise the basic integrity of the book IMO。 。。。more
