Summary

For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO's "Game of Thrones "are together in one boxed set。 An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R。 R。 Martin--dubbed "the American Tolkien" by "Time" magazine--international acclaim and millions of loyal readers。 Now here is the entire monumental cycle:
A GAME OF THRONES
A CLASH OF KINGS
A STORM OF SWORDS
A FEAST OF CROWS
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS
Winter is coming。 Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing。 There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name。 There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow。 Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse--unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season。
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances。 Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen's brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister--the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind。 All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms。
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki--whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys。

the witcher books have since beat this one for best series I’ve ever read, but there are still many quotes from here that have changed my life

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Best epic fantasy yang pernah ada。 Buku terakhir cliffhanger parah。 Jon Snow dikhianati, Tyrion join second sons, Dany hilang sama drogon, Jaime hilang di riverlands, Aegon tiba di westeros, Quentyn jadi sate, Arya jadi faceless men。 Pantes pada ga sabar nunggu lanjutan buku ini。 Udah 11 tahun belum ada tanggal pasti keluarnya。 Dan juga dari buku keempat udah banyak yang beda sama cerita tv seriesnya。 Dari dulu emang buku > film。

Hard to put down - books much better than series - made mowing the grass fun!

Like many others, I was enthralled when I began this series。 The first book was rather good, albeit some annoying "men writing women" paragraphs, but it seems like Martin was really setting up a compelling and thrilling saga。 Then I read the second book。 Then the third。 Honestly, I couldn't bring myself to finish because it was apparent that the author only developed one character and had him decapitated in the first book。 Then he scrambled to give the others some sort of compelling and relatabl Like many others, I was enthralled when I began this series。 The first book was rather good, albeit some annoying "men writing women" paragraphs, but it seems like Martin was really setting up a compelling and thrilling saga。 Then I read the second book。 Then the third。 Honestly, I couldn't bring myself to finish because it was apparent that the author only developed one character and had him decapitated in the first book。 Then he scrambled to give the others some sort of compelling and relatable attributes, but he only succeeded in convincing me that1。) His writing is woefully mundane and two dimensional。 Also I'm pretty sure he's not actually spent more than maybe an hour with an actual woman。2。) His use of excessive violence and particular use of sexual assault being a "phoenix moment" while standing on the BS "tHiS iS hOw It WaS iN mEdIeVaL tImEs" argument gives me a very good reason to never read anything from him again。If the only thing that you do to your characters is rape them or have them violently torn apart so they can "grow" as a character, then you're far from a good writer。 。。。more

Flott univers med mange interessante karakterer og vesner。 Gode skildringer og spennende plot twists。 Selv om seriene er gode, vil bøkene vise deg enda mer av det flotte universet。

Well, this series is my favorite series ever written。 How do you start rating a series you like this much。 Well, I guess I will cover the things I like in general first。 1。 George R。R。 Martin's strongest point as a writer is character development and conflict within a character's own heart or head。 He has said much about this, but it is clear。 The characters are constantly doubting themselves, making decisions where they aren't sure if they are making the right decision。 You know, like real peop Well, this series is my favorite series ever written。 How do you start rating a own heart or head。 He has said much about this, but it is clear。 The characters are constantly doubting themselves, making decisions where they aren't sure if they are making the right decision。 You know, like real people。 I always feel like Martin's characters are so alive。 So real。 They aren't always good, always bad, they are just so dang human。 2。 World Building。 I love the world's GRRM creates。 I find them infinitely interesting, and shockingly detailed。 True, he relies on real historical events, cultures, etc, but it works so well。 There are few series that can stand with GRRM when it comes to believable worlds the characters inhabit, or the details he has about that world。 3。 I mentioned character development, but how about teh characters and how compelling they are。 My favorites are Catelyn Tully Stark, Brienne of Tarth, Theon Greyjoy (particularly his storyline and develpment later on in the series), and, well there are so many more。 Each character feels so independent of each other character。 Not every author is capable of such feats。 I don't think GRRM is perfect at this, or the best I've ever read, however he is really really good at diving into the minds of each individual character。 4。 Light fantasy。 This isn't for everyone。 The books do not have heavy fantasy elements, reading more like historical fiction in parts than fantasy books。 I prefer this however。 I like the light touch of fantasy。 It makes them easier to get into if you ask me。 Also, it means it is more up to the characters to get out of problems instead of being able to easily using some fantasy get of jail card to solve their problems。 5。 Specific book stuff : A Game of Thrones is so good at introducing us ot the world and our main cast of characters。 A Clash of Kings has a lot of politics, most of which is fun and interesting。 A Storm of Swords is in my opinion, the second best book。 It blends so much together and is so hard to put down。 It's a page turner as well as all the other elements I mentioned。 Unlike other fans, I love A Feast For Crows。 I think it shows some of GRRM's political beliefs the strongest。 He is a very anti-war dude, and it shines through best in AFFC。 I also love Brienne of Tarth and we get to be in her mind in this book, so I was pretty happy。 I am gender nonconforming and although I am male, I could still relate to many of Brienne's struggles。 Finally, A Dance With Dragons is actualy my favorite book, like period, ever written。 I have read people who didn't like it, I love it。 It is a mess, like real life。 Every single character is challenged and the things they do don't always go as planned。 I love the world expansion and building unlike some other fans。 I don't want to spoil, so I can't be too specific, but there were many characters and plots I found extremely facinating。 I also think GRRM has some of his best, most delicate, writing in this book。 He is working out plot knots here, adding more there, each action has ripples across the universe。 I love it。 Okay, I am writing a very positive review。 I gave the book 5 stars。 But a review should contain criticism if you ask me, and for people who might be choosing if they want to read this series, lets list some things that make the books not good in some ways。 1。 Many readers criticize GRRM's female characters or the gender politics of the world he created, but。。。somehow flying under the radar is。。。racism。 There are almost no POV characters who aren't white coded。 Westeros is clearly based on Europe (or maybe even specifically Great Britain) so this isn't shocking, but there are opportunities for POV's from non-white characters。 Daenerys spends most of her time around non-white characters, yet none get POVs, no Dothraki POV, no Mereneese POV, no mixed race POV from one of her mercenary free companies。 Also just to name some other characters who didn't necessarily need to be white : Davos, Melisandre (in fact her being non-white might have made more sense), The Targaryens (seriously, if they had been dark skinned it basically would have solved all my issues and would make more sense as they are a people from a tropical region in the world)。 2。 Let's stick with racism to specifically talk about how non-white people's are described。 The Dothraki are barbarians。 They are clearly modelled off of nomadic people such as the Huns or Mongols, however they are modeled on like racist 18th-19th century ideas of the Mongols/Huns and not like。。。actual ideas of Mongolian or Hun culture or society。 This is super disappointing。 I love Mongolian history, and I feel like it was a big ball dropped。 For people out there reading this and thinking : What does he mean。 Some quick examples : Mongolians wore armor。 They didn't go around bare chested because that would be idiotic。 Ghengis Khan was also famous for being a military genius, not an idiot who just ran at his enemies endlessly。 Tsubodai, a general under both Ghenis Khan and his son Ogedai Khan, is perhaps the greatest military general in human history。 The Mongols loved tricking their enemies in battle and causing them to fall into traps they made for them。 Can you see my issues yet? Not only does it go away from the "barbaric" stereotypes Europeans have of Mongols, but it would also make infantly more interesting characters and plots surrounding them。 3。 I'm not done, the Mereneese。 All of the people's of Slaver's Bay。 Again, dark skinned, again mostly stereotyped negatively。 They are Slaver's。 Granted there are slaves in teh Free Cities (although many of those cities are also dark skinned, but I digress) and the Valaryians were Slaver's。。。but they aren't around anymore for us to have light skinned slaver's offsetting the fact that our main slaver group is all dark skinned。 Also, "white savoir" trope much? Honestly, I am not absotuletely certain who the Mereneese and Slaver's Bay is based on, or what cultures GRRM was specifically basing on them。。。but。。。。。whatever culture it was, he makes it as alien and "exotic" as much as he can。 It again reminds me of how racist people think of West, South, or East Asia, exoticizing as much as they possibly can。 4。 This is the final racist based point。 All of the above could be solved in some pretty simple ways : POVs or characters who break the racist and xenophobic stereotypes of these people。 What is amazing, is this kind of break doewn literally happens in the books : The Wildlings。 The Wildlings start the book with many of the same negative stereotypes, and there own set of negative stereotypes, that the Mereneese or Dothraki do。 But unlike the latter groups, GRRM basically exposes the prejudices of Westerosi, and how they are wrong about their culture in many ways and what they believe in。 Most of this happens through Jon Snow's eyes, but any character interacting with the Wildlings basically shows more nuance than the stereotypes。 If only Daenerys, Barristan, Tyrion, and/or Qyntyn could have had similar nuance in their interactions and interpretations of the peoples they interacted with。 5。 So lets cover the criticisms of women POV and gender politics。 I agree with some of them basically。 Granted, I think the racism is a much bigger issue。。but still there are issues。 Some of the female POVs are hyper sexualized, specifically Daenerys and Cersei from my memory, and I think clearly show a male gaze。 Daenerys in particular has uncomfortable parts。 At least Cersei's sexualization kind of lines up with her character, Daenerys is just sexualized。 For example, she talks about her own breasts all。。。the freaking time。 Last time I checked, women don't consistently notice their breasts, just as I, a penis holder, don't constnatly think about my penis。 Gender politics。 Hmm, I have less of a problem with this, as I don't think GRRM endorses those gender politics in his writing, however。。。I also understand the criticism。 I think male on female violence can be a little much, and 。。GRRM focuses on it too much sometimes。 Basically I think GRRM can be sexist, and it can be troubling, however, I also mentioned above : My favorite characters in the books are Catelyn and Brienne, both women。 I think they, and other female characters, are spectacularly written。 I also love how varied they are especially compared to other male written female characters。 They all taken different roles, and aren't all characterized as one or two basic tropes (even if some characters do fall into common fantasy tropes for female characters, I'm looking at you Asha Greyjoy)。 Lengthy description of food? Honestly I am grasping for straws here, my comments about racism and sexism are basically my only complaints about the books。 I guess a lack of LGBT characters, but they are there。 I thought Renly and Loras were well written, as a queer man myself (I know that doesn't make me some expert lol)。 Homophobia in the society is also something we can all agree is fairly common both in the past and now。 I guess I would like some trans characters as someone on the trans spectrum myself。。。but I also understand writing a trans character would probably go wrong from an old white man lol, so I'm probably okay without it, lol。 Welp that's it。 I wrote way too much。 They are really good books, if the things I said in the negative section bother me too much maybe avoid them, or maybe just be prepared for those negative parts。 Anyways, hope y'all get something from my review^^。 。。。more

This is very Tolkienesque, and I am a fan of Tolkien。 The characters live and breathe, as does the world they people。 Some characters are good and right, and others hateful, but he makes the reader feel for even the hateful ones。 It would be a very big loss to literature if this story goes without end。

Oh, these books are so good! I mean, everyone knows that now, but just to reiterate: SO GOOD! Fingers crossed that the completion of the series is way better than that of the TV show。

First 2 books were amazing! Plot was well constructed, characters were inspiring and infuriating。 The rest of the books were less and less so。

I've never watched even 2 minutes of the made for TV series, but I loved the books and quickly listened to all five of the books in the series。 Everything about the writing is great。 The third book was a bit dull compared to the other four, but I had to get through it since they follow one after the other in the story。 I've never watched even 2 minutes of the made for TV series, but I loved the books and quickly listened to all five of the books in the series。 Everything about the writing is great。 The third book was a bit dull compared to the other four, but I had to get through it since they follow one after the other in the story。 。。。more

Great story, not so great writing。 So many storylines that just go nowhere and so many character perspectives that I just don’t care about。 I feel like I’m reading a mix of 1 great book and 3 boring books that take it in turns to tell a chapter。

Absolute stellar character driven narrative with excellent arcs。 The world feels alive and methodically thought out to a degree that is parallel with Tolkien。

Still waiting for the ending, but devoured these books once I got into them。 Better then the program for sure!

I loved these books。 I was able to easily follow the characters, even though there are many。 I am sad beyond sad that GRRM will likely never finish them。

15 days。 5 books plus a prequel novella collection。 5,474 pages in total。 That’s how long it took me to read, George R。 R。 Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series。A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in Westeros and Essos, and follows a huge cast (and I mean HUGE) of characters。 There’s also a total of three main storylines at play — a war to decide who controls Westeros, the Others’ growing threat, and an exiled princess’ efforts to assume the Iron Throne。 And that’s only the main storylines, ther 15 days。 5 books plus a prequel novella collection。 5,474 pages in total。 That’s how long it took me to read, George R。 R。 Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series。A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in Westeros and Essos, and follows a huge cast (and I mean HUGE) of characters。 There’s also a total of three main storylines at play — a war to decide who controls Westeros, the Others’ growing threat, and an exiled princess’ efforts to assume the Iron Throne。 And that’s only the main storylines, there’s many, many more side storylines as well。The story can be hard to follow, not because it’s hard to read, but because there’s a lot of characters to keep track of。 Maps and the appendix will be very useful。 Also, this series is loaded with graphic content。 Gore and death are common, and there’s also swearing and sexual content as well。 The first 3 books are spectacular, particularly A Storm of Swords。 However, the most recent books published, A Feast of Crows and A Dance with Dragons, are slightly weaker。 They’re still great books, however。But, it’s time to reveal the elephant in the room: long waits for the next installment。 Martin is a very slow writer, and the latest entry, A Dance with Dragons, came out in July 2011, and that was 11 years ago。 This series is meant to be 7 books long, but Martin keeps picking up side projects and releases spin-offs instead of working on the last two books。 But regardless of this, A Song of Ice and Fire is highly recommended by me, it’s popular for a reason。 Just don’t expect an ending anytime soon。 。。。more
