A gothic masterpiece of tempestuous passions and dark secrets, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre is edited with an introduction and notes by Stevie Davis in Penguin Classics。

Charlotte Brontë tells the story of orphaned Jane Eyre, who grows up in the home of her heartless aunt, enduring loneliness and cruelty。 This troubled childhood strengthens Jane's natural independence and spirit - which prove necessary when she finds employment as a governess to the young ward of Byronic, brooding Mr Rochester。 As her feelings for Rochester develop, Jane gradually uncovers Thornfield Hall's terrible secret, forcing her to make a choice。 Should she stay with Rochester and live with the consequences, or follow her convictions - even if it means leaving the man she loves? A novel of intense power and intrigue, Jane Eyre dazzled readers with its passionate depiction of a woman's search for equality and freedom。

longer read than what im used to, but stayed engaged。 it was great to read something that took its time, actually, especially with the increasing, modern pressure to be concise。 often I would step back and recall that charlotte bronte wrote this all from her mind, her room, as joyce carol oates explains in the introduction。 the novel has a sprawling quality made even more rich when juxtaposed with the gothic context in which the novel was written。 the strength of bronte's imagination is felt。 longer read than what im used to, but stayed engaged。 it was great to read something that took its time, actually, especially with the increasing, modern pressure to be concise。 often I would step back and recall that charlotte bronte wrote this all from her mind, her room, as joyce carol oates explains in the introduction。 the novel has a sprawling quality made even more rich when juxtaposed with the gothic context in which the novel was written。 the strength of bronte's imagination is felt。 。。。more

I don’t know if I would consider this romantic。 The VERY end was romantic but it’s really more obsession than it is romance? This rating is almost 100% because I like Jane as a character。 I like her attitude。 I’m not sure how I feel about all the other characters but this had some twists and turns I appreciated for sure and I loved the descriptiveness of this book。 I think this book would just continue to get better on reread so I understand why so many people consider it a favorite。

Most definitely yes。 I had my doubts and the beginning of the book started to confirm those doubts but that didn't last。 Of the classics that I have read I would say that Jane Eyre is either the best or one of the best that I have read。 Enjoy。 。。。more

So I had to read this book for school, so that may be why I didn’t rate it as high as most people。 If if picked it up on my own, that may be different, but being told to read a book? Not my style。 Anyways, I found this a compelling read。 It was intriguing, but I could NOT read it。 Firstly, I tried reading the e-book, because we couldn’t borrow it from the library, and I HATED it。 Horrible idea。 Then I tried audiobook, which I liked a lot better。 I listened to the audiobook for, like, half of it, So I had to read this book for school, so that may be why I didn’t rate it as high as most people。 If if picked it up on my own, that may be different, but being told to read a book? hmm, okay。 i get the hype now about this classic。 jane eyre herself is probably the most fleshed-out character i’ve come across。 i love her descriptions of everything around and what was happening to her, and her first point narration。 the plot is impressive and i wouldn’t change a thing about it。 but here’s my personal opinion; i don’t like that it’s too long。 were it be only about 350 pages, i’d be waaayyy happier ‘cause i was bored a couple of times。 and also, i never like the age-gap trope。 hmm, okay。 i get the hype now about this classic。 jane eyre herself is probably the most fleshed-out character i’ve come across。 i love her descriptions of everything around and what was happening to her, and her first point narration。 the plot is impressive and i wouldn’t change a thing about it。 but here’s my personal opinion; i don’t like that it’s too long。 were it be only about 350 pages, i’d be waaayyy happier ‘cause i was bored a couple of times。 and also, i never like the age-gap trope。 so that didn’t do it for me。 i loved the quotes though! i’m glad i’ve read this book。p。s。 i had a more repulsive reaction to st。 john’s part in the book than any of what mr。 rochester has ever done。 。。。more

I went into this book completely blind and was definitely surprised。 As with most classics (especially romances) there were parts that were incredibly slow, but overall, it was a pretty good read。 Unfortunately, however, there was a really awkward cousin kiss。 God damn it Charlotte。

I love this book - but perhaps not quite as much as my mum does。 It's always nice to read someone's favourite book; you get to see an unfamiliar side to the person。 I can't believe I have waited five years to reread Jane Eyre! It's probably my all time favourite love story。 If someone told me that every atom of my flesh is as dear to them as their own: in pain and sickness, and that my mind is their treasure, and if it were broken, it would be their treasure still, I would die。 I have no idea ho I love this book - but perhaps not quite as much as my mum does。 It's always nice to read someone's favourite book; you get to see an unfamiliar side to the person。 I can't believe I have waited five years to reread Jane Eyre! I love reading this so much! A true classic。 If Jane Eyre taught me anything, it is to push beyond my reach and speak up。 It has a stream of consciousness style but at the same time it doesn't。 Not really。 She is exposed to both worlds - the poor and later, the rich but finds that she doesn't belong in either。 She is unsatisfied and would rather live alone than to compromise her independence。 A strong female protaganist if this was written in the 21st century。 That said, it would have been groun I love reading this so much! Jane Eyre has taught me so much about will, self-respect and compromising to one ´s own set of rules and principles。 Although the ending was quite romantic, it didn´t entirely feel like a romance novel, but a story of strength, love, union and change。 "Who in the world cares for you?"
