Summary

Private investigator John Blacksad is up to his feline ears in mystery, digging into the backstories behind murders, child abductions, and nuclear secrets。 Guarnido's sumptuously painted pages and rich cinematic style bring the world of 1950s America to vibrant life, with Canales weaving in fascinating tales of conspiracy, racial tension, and the "red scare" Communist witch hunts of the time。 Guarnido reinvents anthropomorphism in these pages, and industry colleagues no less than Will Eisner, Jim Steranko, and Tim Sale are fans!

Whether John Blacksad is falling for dangerous women or getting beaten to within an inch of his life, his stories are, simply put, unforgettable。

* Dark Horse is very proud to present the first three Blacksad stories in a beautiful hardcover collection, completely relettered to the artist's specifications and with the latest album, Red Soul, in English for the very first time。

* This internationally acclaimed series has won nearly a dozen prestigious awards — including the Angoulême Comics Festival prizes for Best Series and Best Artwork-and is a three-time Eisner Award nominee。

I liked the book but I hate the way the artist draws women。 Also each album introduces a whole suite of new characters, settings, institutions etc which makes it a bit complicated to follow。

The stories are good (if depressing at times) and the art is incredible。

Juanjo Guarnido's expressions and poses are literally second-to-none, they're so human and quirky, and his framing seeps hardboiled detective film noir which would be fine without an excellent script to pair with it, but the simple, effective and likeable noir dialogue elevates the material and makes it very fun, very easy reading, and also pertinent and powerful。 One of my absolute favourite reads。 Juanjo Guarnido's expressions and poses are literally second-to-none, they're so human and quirky, and his framing seeps hardboiled detective film noir which would be fine without an excellent script to pair with it, but the simple, effective and likeable noir dialogue elevates the material and makes it very fun, very easy reading, and also pertinent and powerful。 One of my absolute favourite reads。 。。。more

This a a pulpy noir with great art。 Really fantastic - the line work, the coloring - it’s top-notch。 And if you are a fan of noir or classic “hard bitten” crime, well this is for you。 It’s very Bogart and Bacall as cats。 Or a cat and a dog? A fox? A cat and a female of some sort。That was really my only problem with the series。 The women are all sexy sexpots (or mousey literal mice), and they almost looked the same。 Pert little muzzles and aahOOOga human bodies… there was a template and the artis This a a pulpy noir with great art。 Really fantastic - the line work, the coloring - it’s top-notch。 And if you are a fan of noir or classic “hard bitten” crime, well this is for you。 It’s very Bogart and Bacall as cats。 Or a cat and a dog? An attempt to make a noir comic using anthorpomorphic people such as a cat private eye, a wolf detective, and so on。 Its pretty well done and beautifully illustrated, but doesn't quite capture noir well because its soulless and without any sort of moral tone。 One of the most powerful aspects of noir was people being forced to make choices and challenging their principles, which nobody in this world seems to have。Some of the stories were a bit forced (the 'black animals vs white animals' issue wi An attempt to make a noir comic using anthorpomorphic people such as a cat private eye, a wolf detective, and so on。 Its pretty well done and beautifully illustrated, but doesn't quite capture noir well because its soulless and without any sort of moral tone。 One of the most powerful aspects of noir was people being forced to make choices and challenging their principles, which nobody in this world seems to have。Some of the stories were a bit forced (the 'black animals vs white animals' issue with a snowflake for a swastika was not very effective; a far better effort would have been predators vs prey or mammals vs non or something of that sort), but overall they are well-told。 Blacksad isn't much of a detective but he does kill an awful lot of people and get beat up a lot。 。。。more

A fantastic book all around。 The story and writing was gripping and easy to follow and the characters were enjoyable。 The artist had a background with Disney and that really shows in the art。 There's such a charm to the artwork in this book and the characters emotions are captured so well in the form of animals。 The level of detail in each panel was also phenomenal。 A fantastic book all around。 The story and writing was gripping and easy to follow and the characters were enjoyable。 The artist had a background with Disney and that really shows in the art。 There's such a charm to the artwork in this book and the characters emotions are captured so well in the form of animals。 The level of detail in each panel was also phenomenal。 。。。more

I went in expecting a fun anthropological mystery romp with a cat-pun or two strewn about。 What I got instead was a well-timed solid noir。 Not half bad。

Gorgeous art!! The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 was that it is so aggressively sexist。 I don’t think I’ve read anything in the last several years which depicts woman almost entirely as sexual objects (beautifully of course)。 They are so few women in general in this。 One would think that women make up less than 10% of the population。 That being said, everything is super well done。 Simply gorgeous (except for misogyny 🤬)。

A brilliant crime noir set in the 50s in America seen through the eyes of anthropomorphic characters。 The stories range from hard boiled crime to intrigue involving the red menace。 There's also one involving racism that can make your skin crawl。 Gorgeously drawn and coloured。 This is an absolute must own。 A brilliant crime noir set in the 50s in America seen through the eyes of anthropomorphic characters。 The stories range from hard boiled crime to intrigue involving the red menace。 There's also one involving racism that can make your skin crawl。 Gorgeously drawn and coloured。 This is an absolute must own。 。。。more

[••] Overwhelmingly beautiful noir art。 However, the story lacks an emotional connection or the intrigue-hook one might find in a mystery-novel。

A very clever social commentary told through anthropomorphic animals。 It is extremely on the nose about the messages that it's bringing across, yet it still manages to work effectively。 The worldbuilding is well done, with small details intricately woven into the separate detective cases and helping to enrich Blacksad's environment。 Going hand in hand with beautiful illustrations, this is a story that excels at what it attempts。 DO NOT BUY THE GAME TRIGGERS: graphic violence, nudity, racism A very clever social commentary told through anthropomorphic animals。 It is extremely on the nose about the messages that it's bringing across, yet it still manages to work effectively。 The worldbuilding is well done, with small details intricately woven into the separate detective cases and helping to enrich Blacksad's environment。 Going hand in hand with beautiful illustrations, this is a story that excels at what it attempts。 DO NOT BUY THE GAME TRIGGERS: graphic violence, nudity, racism and more。 This is a very trigger heavy read。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book a lot! I was a little tepid about reading it because of the anthropomorphic characters, but the writer used that to his advantage to the characters’ traits。 The main character, John Blacksad, is a bit of an antihero。 He has noble intentions, but he doesn’t walk around with Superman’s ethic。 I think that is a big reason why the writing is so good here…all of the characters’ motivations are shades of gray。 On top of the excellent writing, the star of this series is the a I really enjoyed this book a lot!
