Summary

The Alexandrian Society is a secret society of magical academicians, the best in the world。 Their members are caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity。 And those who earn a place among their number will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams。 Each decade, the world’s six most uniquely talented magicians are selected for initiation – and here are the chosen few。。。

- Libby Rhodes and Nicolás Ferrer de Varona: inseparable enemies, cosmologists who can control matter with their minds。
- Reina Mori: a naturalist who can speak the language of life itself。
- Parisa Kamali: a mind reader whose powers of seduction are unmatched。
- Tristan Caine: the son of a crime kingpin who can see the secrets of the universe。
- Callum Nova: an insanely rich pretty boy who could bring about the end of the world。 He need only ask。

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they must spend one year together to qualify for initiation。 During this time, they will be permitted access to the Society’s archives and judged on their contributions to arcane areas of knowledge。 Five, they are told, will be initiated。 One will be eliminated。 If they can prove themselves to be the best, they will survive。 Most of them。

Give us more Reina!!!I enjoyed this book as a whole but with a lot of consideration there was some major holes。 So many incredible concepts… as long as you fill the gaps for yourself。 The descriptions of magic are confusing and lack tangibility in some places。 In fact they lack explanation altogether。 As a reader we’re expected to know the difference between a witch and a median (it’s never explained in this book)。 The POV’s are a little indulgent and lack real time conversations and moments。 Wo Give us more Reina!!!I enjoyed this book as a whole but with a lot of consideration there was some major holes。 So many incredible concepts… as long as you fill the gaps for yourself。 The descriptions of magic are confusing and lack tangibility in some places。 In fact they lack explanation altogether。 As a reader we’re expected to know the difference between a witch and a median (it’s never explained in this book)。 The POV’s are a little indulgent and lack real time conversations and moments。 World building is non existent and you have to imagine you’re own idea of a “very British building” Mermaid that can travel through dreams/realities and we still don’t know what she looks like? Missed opportunity。 Everyone is … in love with each other? Maybe? …However … I don’t think we’re supposed to like these characters。 It was refreshing to jump ship every couple of POVs and decide you prefer qualities of another。 The only character who spoke to me the most was the one with the fewest interactions and POVs。 Reina。 I like the introduction of a “new character” at the end and where it’s going to lead but I’m not sure I could read a second book straight away after trying to navigate the first。 。。。more

I’m not sure on this book, it was really slow for 70% with a lot of what felt like unnecessary details。 The characters aren’t very likeable either which made it hard to want to continue reading。 The overall concept was great but it just lacked any spark for me。

I can’t wait for the sequel, thankfully not far away now! Such a gripping story and I don’t normally like perspective changes but with this dynamic group of characters, I was into it。

This did not draw me in 🙁

This book was one that felt way longer than its page count suggested。 While there is a good twisted new adult+ academy style story going on in there, it's hidden beneath an awful lot of philosophical musings and character introspection written in language so obtuse I wasn't always sure what it was trying to do。 I'm not saying it was bad, just that it was。。。 A lot。 Add in each chapter hopping between six equally unlikable characters with each of them being clueless to the really easy to guess par This book was one that felt way longer than its page count suggested。 While there is a good twisted new adult+ academy style story going on in there, it's hidden beneath an awful lot of philosophical musings and character introspection written in language so obtuse I wasn't always sure what it was trying to do。 I'm not saying it was bad, just that it was。。。 A lot。 Add in each chapter hopping between six equally unlikable characters with each of them being clueless to the really easy to guess part of the plot for so long。。。 I couldn't help but feel it dragged on more than it really needed to。 There's a twist at the end you likely won't see coming straight off, but it only really gets going in the last 50 or so pages。I did love the ideas in it, in the way magic infuses reality and is studied like physics or mathematics。 I liked how the characters' back stories were woven in subtle ways, all show and no tell。 I didn't feel this approach was great when it came to explaining magical concepts - characters seemed unable to talk like normal people and used very strange and uncommunicative ways of expressing things that made it far harder to follow than it otherwise could have been。 Dialogue could seem unnaturally stilted (or in the case of Nico and Libby, unaturally over the top YA-worthy snark)。 The miscommunication/witholding information for plot reasons trope was out in force。 Some side characters have the potential to be very interesting, but mostly we spent a lot of time in the six main characters' heads as their trains of thought shunted around。TL;DR: I like the idea, but not so much the slow and obfusticating language style of the execution。I am curious about where it could go from here, but I really hope the next book picks up the pace。 。。。more

I feel like i never got to know Reina, considering she was supposed to be super powerful she was never really fully realised because everyone was wayy too focused on Libby, killing her, not killing her, fucking her, the unrealised enemies to lovers trope between her and Nico。。。 messy。Talking of messy, Parisa - babes, what?Parisas role in the book was basically to get everyone else to communicate in the only way she knows how, i wont spoil it for you but iykyk。Callum - meh? Unrealised, cliche and badly described。Tristan? Nico? Just bounced Libby between eachother。There was no plot。 I got the general direction, but this school not school society (of SIX?) Was loose at best, and SO predicatable。 That interlude needs to be scrapped because it made it so unbelievably obvious。 [Spoiler!! If you're going to introduce a side character as a new enemy, do it through interactions with a main character, dont write an interlude about it, i switched off from this point onwards because like it was so bLATANTLY OBVIOUS]This book was supposedly parallel to the secret history。 It was not。 Don't get me wrong, it wasnt bad, but off the back off TSH, it doesnt even slightly hold par。Probs wont read the next one honestly, it just didnt leave me wanting。 。。。more

I'm really conflicted because I wanted to love this book, or at the very least like it。 Everything about it pointed to it being right up my street, but。。。 This was the most boring, pretentious, and chaotic book I've ever read。 I didn't care for any of the characters, and I was so bored by the plot。 I love dark academia, but this ain't it。(And yes, I adore The Secret History。) I'm really conflicted because I wanted to love this book, or at the very least like it。 Everything about it pointed to it being right up my street, but。。。 This was the most boring, pretentious, and chaotic book I've ever read。 I didn't care for any of the characters, and I was so bored by the plot。 I love dark academia, but this ain't it。(And yes, I adore The Secret History。) 。。。more

This is a character focused book and I am not so sure how I feel about the plot。 Somehow it did not climaxed as expected, probably in the second book? I am giving it more stars because it got me out of my reading slump and good character buildup。

I really liked the characters in this book and seeing the story from multiple POV’s。 That being said it also made it very confusing to read at times and at times it felt like the book was dragging。

Interesting concept。 But, all the characters unlikeable for me and I don't understand almost everything in it。 Why did OB choose those words over any other words out there? I don't want to compare, it's just not for me。 Interesting concept。 But, all the characters unlikeable for me and I don't understand almost everything in it。 Why did OB choose those words over any other words out there? The writing, the plot, all the twists, excellent! I love Libby I cannot wait to see her corruption arc in book 2。Parisa is totally gonna save biker boy dalton from whatever mind prison Atlas has him in。Ezra got WAY cooler at the end。 Callum is an asshole but his smart, but he’s an asshole。 Tristan is hot I just know it。 Reina is MOMMY and I wanna be her friend。 I hope she gets more time the next book because I wanna 4。5 ⭐️ 🌶️/5Wow。 This was great。 It’s getting me so excited for the 2nd one now! I really loved this book, the characters, the plot, it was all amazing。 I just had no idea what was going on sometimes。 I skipped paragraphs of internal monologue that made no difference to my understanding of the story。 I could not tell you a single rule for the magic system that was created。 Still, when the sequel comes out, I will read it immediately

Hope

I didn't know how to rate this one。I felt like I was not smart enough to understand it (or it might be my refusal to listen to it on a normal reading speed since I am unable to listen to it anymore)。It is smart, and I liked that it didn't have a typical plot, but sometimes i got lost in the dialog asking myself what they were talking about。 All the philosophy inside this book was both refreshing and frustrating。 I didn't know how to rate this one。I felt like I was not smart enough to understand it (or it might be my refusal to listen to it on a normal reading speed since I am unable to listen to it anymore)。It is smart, and I liked that it didn't have a typical plot, but sometimes i got lost in the dialog asking myself what they were talking about。 All the philosophy inside this book was both refreshing and frustrating。 。。。more
