Over the course of fifty-six years, there must be thousands of great pen and ink work。 To limit it to only 236 drawings leaves my mouth watering for more。 Most likely, any single one of the artists included could probably have their own book of incredible art。2) There isn't enough information。 I fully understand that this book is a treasury of the art itself, and I greatly enjoying thumbing through it and looking at the works, but I'd also love to know a little more about each of the artists。 A paragraph maybe of the years their work appeared; the magazines/publishers they typically worked for; training; home; that sort of thing。Personally, I would love to see Dover publish a series of more detailed information and samples of work on a few of the stand-outs from the era。 In the meantime, this book really whets the appetite by sampling some of the works from this era of pen and ink illustration。Looking for a good book? Treasury of American Pen and Ink is a coffee-table-style book of outstanding black and white art that is magnificent to look through and should be in every art-lover's home。 。。。more
megHan,
I love anything art related - art books, art museums - so when I came across this book, with it's beautiful cover, I had to take a look inside。 This book is full of some absolutely beautiful artwork and the introduction is very informative, sharing the history of this particular medium with the reader。 It is shocking really what some people can do with a pen and a piece of paper - wow!Note: I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review。 I love anything art related - art books, art museums - so when I came across this book, with it's beautiful cover, I had to take a look inside。 This book is full of some absolutely beautiful artwork and the introduction is very informative, sharing the history of this particular medium with the reader。 It is shocking really what some people can do with a pen and a piece of paper - wow!Note: I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review。 。。。more
Leslie,
Beautiful illustrations and good background information on American pen & ink artwork。 It was delightful to browse and discover familiar artist's works like Maxfield Parrish and Howard Pyle and equally wonderful to discover new favorites like Rose O'Neill, James Montgomery Flagg, Elizabeth Shippen Green, F。 G。 Atwood, and Jessie McDermott。 I was inspired to research these artists and found that they were more familiar than I previously believed: Flagg's iconic Uncle Sam and Rose O'Neill's Kewpie Beautiful illustrations and good background information on American pen & ink artwork。 It was delightful to browse and discover familiar artist's works like Maxfield Parrish and Howard Pyle and equally wonderful to discover new favorites like Rose O'Neill, James Montgomery Flagg, Elizabeth Shippen Green, F。 G。 Atwood, and Jessie McDermott。 I was inspired to research these artists and found that they were more familiar than I previously believed: Flagg's iconic Uncle Sam and Rose O'Neill's Kewpie were surprises。 This book would be perfect to influence and inspire artists and illustrators and delight those of us who admire their accomplishments。 Highly recommended for public libraries and for collections that support the arts。 。。。more
Rob Slaven,
As usual I received this title free in exchange for a review, this time from NetGalley。 Also as usual I give my scrupulously honest opinions below。Rather than go on about positive and negative aspects of this one, I'll just make some observations and you be the judge because it really isn't a matter of good and bad so much as "is this the book you're looking for。"Fundamentally this book is just a collection of art prints。 The prints themselves are devilishly detailed and riveting in their execut As usual I received this title free in exchange for a review, this time from NetGalley。 Also as usual I give my scrupulously honest opinions below。Rather than go on about positive and negative aspects of this one, I'll just make some observations and you be the judge because it really isn't a matter of good and bad so much as "is this the book you're looking for。"Fundamentally this book is just a collection of art prints。 The prints themselves are devilishly detailed and riveting in their execution and each is accompanied by a caption and attribution but that's about it。 In most cases you get the print and a sentence on each page。Work is pulled from a dizzying array of sources。 Books, magazines, advertising, comics, even Christmas Card designs are subjects of reproduction。There is about a 5-page introduction that covers the history and techniques of the art during this time period。 。。。more

'Treasury of American Pen & Ink Illustration 1881-1938' is indeed an interesting treasure chest filled with drawings that are harder and harder to find。 Old magazines and books are not the usual kind of things people seek out, but they offer an amazing array of drawings from the end of the 1800s。 And these are incredible detailed drawings。There are are 236 drawings by over 100 artists。 There are cartoons, art deco, pirates, knights, soldiers, biblical figures, gentlemen and ladies。 Just about ev 'Treasury of American Pen & Ink Illustration 1881-1938' is indeed an interesting treasure chest filled with drawings that are harder and harder to find。 Old magazines and books are not the usual kind of things people seek out, but they offer an amazing array of drawings from the end of the 1800s。 And these are incredible detailed drawings。There are are 236 drawings by over 100 artists。 There are cartoons, art deco, pirates, knights, soldiers, biblical figures, gentlemen and ladies。 Just about every drawing begs the eye to study all the detail。 One of my favorites was "Picturesque America" by Harry Grant Dart which shows a bustling city scene with horse drawn carriages and streetcars and some of the most hilariously subtle billboards I've ever seen。Artists include Maxfield Parrish, Howard Pyle (a favorite from my childhood), Charles Dana Gibson (of the famed Gibson Girl drawing) and Rockwell Kent。 All the drawings are presented in black and white and there is an excellent introduction by Fridolf Johnson explaining the art and how printing techniques advanced toward the end of the 19th century to make printing these in magazines easier and more affordable。It's a great collection to feast your eyes on if you like pen and ink drawings。I was given a review copy of this book by Dover Publications and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 Thank you for allowing me to review this book。 。。。more
