Summary

A Doll's House， written two years after The Pillars of Society， was the first of Ibsen's plays to create a sensation and is now perhaps his most famous play， and required reading in many secondary schools and universities。 The play was highly controversial when first published， as it is sharply critical of 19th Century marriage norms。 It follows the formula of well-made play up until the final act， when it breaks convention by ending with a discussion， not an unravelling。 It is often called the first true feminist play， although Ibsen denied this。

3。5/5I had already watched an adaptation of this play， so I was familiar with the story， but it was great to read it， as well。 I’m always astounded when I read old works that examine and challenge women’s treatment in society at the time， especially when it’s done by a man; but yeah this was great， highlighted lots of passages that I thought were really clever and that I loved。

Torvald le cede el puesto del señor Krogstad。 Ante la situación， Nora es chantajeada por el suplantado， que pretende desvelar el secreto de años atrás por falsificar la firma de su padre moribundo con tal de conseguir un préstamo suyo y así salvarle la vida a su marido。 No obstante， Cristina se conmueve por su amiga y le pedirá a Krogstad que devuelva el contrato a cambio de estar juntos。 Este acepta， sin embargo， cuando Torvald se entera de lo sucedido， juzga y humilla a Nora， creyendo esta que la alabaría agradeciéndole por su sacrificio。 Su marido， al comprender que su figura se encuentra a salvo por la renuncia del extorsionador， intenta reconciliarse con su mujer， pero está ya se habrá quitado la venda de los ojos， comprendiendo que tanto su matrimonio como su vida eran una mentira y que ha formado parte de una puesta en escena constante， siendo la muñeca de su padre y después de su marido， por lo que decide huir de su casa y de su familia para perseguir su independencia y un reencuentro consigo misma。La parte que he decidido seleccionar pertenece a la séptima escena del tercer acto de la obra， justo el discurso que profiere Nora a Torvald cuando despierta ante la subordinada situación en la que ha vivido toda su vida: «En ocho años enteros。。。no， más; desde que nos conocemos， nunca habíamos hablado una palabra seria sobre un tema serio。 [。。。] Nunca me has comprendido。 Y he sido tratada muy injustamente， Torvald。 Primero por mi padre y luego por ti。 [。。。] Nunca me habéis querido。 Disfrutabais conmigo y os resultaba divertido quererme， eso es todo。 [。。。] Cuando vivía en casa de papá， él dictaba las leyes y yo solamente las seguía。 Y si no estaba de acuerdo me callaba la boca， porque no le hubiera gustado que replicara。 [。。。] Los dos me hicisteis un daño muy grande。 Los dos sois culpables de que yo nunca haya llegado a ser nada。 [。。。] Hay otra cosa de la que debo ocuparme antes de educar niños: tengo que educarme a mí misma， y tú no eres alguien capaz de ayudarme en eso。 Lo tengo que hacer por mi cuenta y necesito estar sola， así que te dejo， Torvald»。 He elegido estas palabras porque me parece el momento más importante de la obra， cerrándola con un clímax asombroso y nada esperado。 Es admirable la evolución que sufre el personaje de Nora， pues pasa de ser una mujer con secretos， sometida y complaciente， a una mujer sin nada que perder， fuerte， independiente y llena de convicción con un futuro incierto por delante。 Ibsen realiza un análisis en el que plasma la crítica de los códigos morales de su época， el limitado “libre albedrío” del ser humano， injusto en particular para la mujer， pues el hombre tiene una autonomía para desarrollar sus acciones dentro de su propia ética， y cuenta con multitud de recursos por si es increpado por sus malos actos， medios que las manos femeninas carecían para desarrollar su visión y acción sobre un modelo de conducta ideado por hombres: el patriarcado。 Se muestran los sentimientos de frustración e inconformismo que sufre el individuo al vivir en una sociedad en la que imperan las apariencias， manteniendo una estructura de estabilidad y unión familiar tan falsa como hipócrita。 Además， es interesante como el autor utiliza el lenguaje simple y aniñado con el que trata Torvald a Nora， exponiendo la ridiculez de la situación a la que se veían sujetas las amas de casa， pues eran vistas como ángeles del hogar， completamente desprovistas de cualquier carácter indigno de una niña buena， induciéndolas en una infancia eterna cargada de inocencia e ignorancia。 El espacio en el que se desarrolla toda la acción transcurre en la misma casa del matrimonio， un recurso completamente simbólico， pues se nos presenta sutilmente la situación de Nora， que vive siendo utilizada como una muñeca encerrada en su casita， obedeciendo y complaciendo a la mano ejecutora， su marido， pero despertando poco a poco del sueño que supone su realidad。Es evidente la intención del autor， que usa al personaje de Nora Helmer como foco central generador de la controversia。 Cabe destacar que el estreno de la obra resultó sumamente polémico por su puesta en juicio del orden preestablecido， mostrando un retrato de la sociedad del siglo XIX decadente que， incluso， los fundamentalistas tacharon de profano。 Nora aparece como una figura rebelde， heróica para algunos， sin embargo， errada para otros。 Podría decirse que se trata de una obra feminista， aunque se ha puesto siempre en duda que la verdadera pretensión de Ibsen fuera esta， no obstante， cumple su función。La obra se estrenó el 21 de diciembre de 1879 en el Teatro Real de Copenhague que， seguidamente， fue interpretada en Estocolmo y poco después en Oslo。 Entre las representaciones más destacadas están la de 1884， cuando llegó al Princess Theatre de Londres， y a Broadway en 1889。 En Italia no se estrenó hasta 1891， en Milán， sin embargo， su trascendencia ha llegado alrededor del mundo。 Por otro lado， entre 1910 y 1920 encontramos que se realizaron una multitud de adaptaciones cinematográficas hoy perdidas y olvidadas。 No obstante， conocemos la argentina Casa de Muñecas （1943） de Ernesto Arancibia， y las británicas A Doll's House （1973）， ambas del mismo año y bajo el mismo título， de Joseph Losey y Patrick Garland， respectivamente。 También， entre las más destacadas， se realizaron la alemana Nora Helmer （1947） de Rainer Werner Fassbinder， y la española Casa de Muñecas （2002） de José Manuel Armán。 。。。more

Un despertar feminista， admiro mucho al autor por haberse arriesgado a escribir algo así en su época， incluso le forzaron a cambiar el final para adaptarlo a las convenciones sociales hasta que por fin se pudo representar la obra fielmente con un final digno para Nora， un personaje que recuerdo con mucho cariño aún años después。

I don't look at it as woman vs man。 I look at it as person vs system （society， culture， religion and country， Nora being one cog） which always wants to put in an allotted slot， allotted job and allotted joy。 If you see beyond， Torvald was justifying his despicable behaviour to Nora employing honour， law a（society imposed）， religion， morality （culture driven） and even hierarchy （with respect to Krogstad）。 So Torvald was as much a cog in the system as Nora， a more influential cog， no doubt， until I don't look at it as woman vs man。 I look at it as person vs system （society， culture， religion and country， Nora being one cog） which always wants to put in an allotted slot， allotted job and allotted joy。 If you see beyond， Torvald was justifying his despicable behaviour to Nora employing honour， law a（society imposed）， religion， morality （culture driven） and even hierarchy （with respect to Krogstad）。 So Torvald was as much a cog in the system as Nora， a more influential cog， no doubt， until she got out。 Imagine while nature operates on survival first， human society operates on morality （and it's derivative， law） first。 You are expected to starve to death but stealing is absolute no， no and is dubbed criminal。 Doll's house may as well be Robots' house。 。。。more

Današnji svet， kako književni tako i kinematografski， prenatrpan je delima koji govore o ženama， feminizmu， potisnutom položaju žene u svetu， patrijarhatu， i sl。 Ipak， moram reći da su mi te stvari jako mučne， i to ne u smislu da mi smetaju， već što su ideje plitke i izvedene na jako šablonski i， rekao bih， glup način。 Doduše， ne bih ni ja previše da generalizujem， ali tu su neka moja iskustva do sada， pogotovo što se tiče sveta kinematografije。 Međutim， ovo je mnogo širi problem nego problem že Današnji svet， kako književni tako i kinematografski， prenatrpan je delima koji govore o ženama， feminizmu， potisnutom položaju žene u svetu， patrijarhatu， i sl。 Ipak， moram reći da su mi te stvari jako mučne， i to ne u smislu da mi smetaju， već što su ideje plitke i izvedene na jako šablonski i， rekao bih， glup način。 Doduše， ne bih ni ja previše da generalizujem， ali tu su neka moja iskustva do sada， pogotovo što se tiče sveta kinematografije。 Međutim， ovo je mnogo širi problem nego problem žena， baš kao što je i sam autor rekao， ovo je problem čoveka uopšte。 I tako meni Ibzenova drama dopadne šaka。 I to kakva drama！ Nije mi bilo jasno ali ranije sam viđao naziv „Nora“ da bih tek kasnije shvatio da je to zapravo „Lutkina kuća“， meni odavno poznata ali nepročitana drama。 Drama govori o položaju žene u društvu i u kući， i prikazano je krajnje efektno， pogotovo u završnici drame gde se vidi mnogo obrta。 Ipak， svesti dramu samo na to mislim da slab pokušaj da se kvalitet ovog dela predstavi u pravom svetlu。 Iako napisana davne 1897。 godine， i dan danas je aktuelna， i mislim da je delo koje svako mora pročitati。 Negde sam naleteo na podatak da je drama pisana po poznatoj danskoj književnici， mada kako nisam previše zalazio u istraživanje， to ću staviti pod znak pitanja。 U svakom slučaju， kvalitet dela se ne umanjuje。 Ovo je jedno od onih dela kada nakon pročitanog možete da sednete i da duže vreme provedete misleći o pročitanom， a onda po etapama da krenete da poredite segmente drame sa realnim životom i ljudima oko vas。 Teme koje se pojavljuju kako u drami， kasnije i u glavi， su raznolike。 Položaj žene u braku， položaj žene u društvu， seksizam， ali pre svega – čovek。 Psihološki aspekti likova su fenomenalni dok su sami elementi iskorišćeni savršeno。 Imate neko mišljenje o nekom a onda， kada maske padnu， vi vidite neku sasvim drugu osobu。 Isto tako， i vaša maska padne， i vidite sebe sasvim drugačije。 Možda niste ni živeli već je neko drugi nametao sve vama pod nos， pomerajući vas kako im shodno， time oponašajući pravu marionetu iz jedne jako lepe lutkine kuće。 Ima tih ljudi zbog kojih ste spremni sve da učinite， a nažalost nekada se pokaže da ste se sve vreme žrtvovali za pogrešnu osobu i nekako ko vas ne samo ne razume， već i ne ceni kao osobu。 Ova （građanska） drama odigrava se u kući i uprkos tome nema neki monotoni ton。 Dijalozi su dinamični i jako upečatljivo oblikuju likove koji sudeluju i kojih nije mnogo。 Po nekim stvarima dok sam čitao pravio sam paralelu između autora i Krleže， samo što mislim da je Ibzen u ovoj slučaju postupio prostije （ali ne i lošije）。 Veliki broj peripetija u završnoj trećini drame dovodi do konačne katastrofe kada se podsvest polako budi a zatim žudi ka slobodi， kao nekakva ptica koja je jedan od simbola ove drame prikazan kroz Noru i nazive koje joj muž daje。 Dva sveta su jasno oslikana u ovom jednom， a to je spoljni， onaj prividni i staloženi， i onaj drugi， unutrašnji， onaj koji je srž većine likova ove drame i gde se dešavaju mnoga ključanja。 Svaki od glavnih likova na svoj način vodi svoje unutrašnje borbe koje se kasnije prelivaju na spoljašnji svet， i baš ta eksplozija govori o čoveku kao jako komplikovanom biću spremnom da se prilagođava svemu zarad ljubavi， posla， porodice ili statusa – što je u ovom slučaju nešto što se prožima kroz celu dramu。 Nisam čitao Ibzena ali ovakva dela mogu pisati samo pisci koji su duboko zaronili u dušu i samospoznaju， poput Dostojevskog ili Šekspira， i na efektan način preneti to u delo koje ima malo više od sto stranica je ništa sem genijalnosti。 Čuo sam da se ovo delo radi u gimanziji i mogu reći da mi je drago。 Za vreme mog školovanja mislim da te drame nije bilo， a i da jeste verovatno ne bih čitao znajući kakav sam bio。 Ipak， sada mi je jako drago što jesam。 Mislim da bih mogao još satima pisao o ovome， ali se trudim da ne otkrijem ni jedan detalj kako ne bih nekome pokvario čitalačko iskustvo。 I kako da završim？ Možda uz jedan jak tresak vrata。 Dovoljno jak da jedna ptica probije rešetke kaveza。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 A very fine and still fresh take on the emancipation of women with all its ups and downs。 Stuck in the role of the picture perfect housewife， Nora has done more for their marriage than her husband gives her credit for。 He constantly pampers and underestimates her and her abilities to fend for herself and her husband。 Their conversations are a painful facade for the lacking respect， understanding and open communication between them， their companionship seemingly built on false assumptions。 When h A very fine and still fresh take on the emancipation of women with all its ups and downs。 Stuck in the role of the picture perfect housewife， Nora has done more for their marriage than her husband gives her credit for。 He constantly pampers and underestimates her and her abilities to fend for herself and her husband。 Their conversations are a painful facade for the lacking respect， understanding and open communication between them， their companionship seemingly built on false assumptions。 When her husband finds out the truth， he cannot accept his wife for who she really is。 The ending especially has a surprisingly modern taste and I applaud its execution。 Strong story about a strong woman！ 。。。more

I had read this piece and found it interesting and amazingly sympathetic in its portrayal of women's circumstances of the time。 Unfortunately I just learned that Ibsen's success with this work came from the exploitation of a fellow （woman） writer's circumstances -a writer （Laura Kieler） eventually forced to resort to criminal activity， following his refusal to help her in the way he could， in her time of need。 He knew the story all right。 He'd had a piece in its making。 I wonder if he ever share I had read this piece and found it interesting and amazingly sympathetic in its portrayal of women's circumstances of the time。 Unfortunately I just learned that Ibsen's success with this work came from the exploitation of a fellow （woman） writer's circumstances -a writer （Laura Kieler） eventually forced to resort to criminal activity， following his refusal to help her in the way he could， in her time of need。 He knew the story all right。 He'd had a piece in its making。 I wonder if he ever shared with Laura the fruits that came from his "labor"。Fuck him and his work。 。。。more
