Well, that's a development。 Turns out Eren (view spoiler)[can turn into a Titan (hide spoiler)] and now everone knows。 And that means *they have a plan*!The strength in this is really the worldbuilding。 I'm still trying to figure out what in the world is going on in this crazy gruesome world--and seeing how people are just people all along。 Some good, some bad, and some downright crazy。 ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> Well, that's a development。 Turns out Eren (view spoiler)[can turn into a Titan (hide spoiler)] and now everone knows。 And that means *they have a plan*!The strength in this is really the worldbuilding。 I'm still trying to figure out what in the world is going on in this crazy gruesome world--and seeing how people are just people all along。 Some good, some bad, and some downright crazy。 ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

In my opinion this volume wasn't as great as the first two, because it dragged sometimes。 However it did still manage to keep me on the edge of my seat。 We got to officially see Eren's titan and it's one of my favorite moments to happen thus far。 In my opinion this volume wasn't as great as the first two, because it dragged sometimes。 However it did still manage to keep me on the edge of my seat。 We got to officially see Eren's titan and it's one of my favorite moments to happen thus far。 。。。more

This volume has a lot of tactics incorporated along with the action which makes it a wonderful read。 The story picks up pace and I'm very much invested in this world right now。The cliffhanger at the end is very tense and I cannot wait to dive into the next volume as soon as possible。 This volume has a lot of tactics incorporated along with the action which makes it a wonderful read。 The story picks up pace and I'm very much invested in this world right now。The cliffhanger at the end is very tense and I cannot wait to dive into the next volume as soon as possible。 。。。more

This series is good at hinting at things and offering promises while keeping an overwhelming sense of mystery going, and I kinda love it。

I've noticed that the human illustrations aren't the best, but the titans are superb。 I guess that's the trade off。 Story line is getting very interesting but again, the translation is off in some places。 I've noticed that the human illustrations aren't the best, but the titans are superb。 I guess that's the trade off。 Story line is getting very interesting but again, the translation is off in some places。 。。。more

At times, manga will spoil itself via too revealing covers。 I fear volume 3 is one such case。 Given how SnK operates so much on genuinely impressive twists and turns- which is why I am avoiding any and all discussion about the franchise, given I am, at this point, still two episodes into the Final Season and still I already had crucial developments spoiled (curse you, Quora, curse you!)- I cannot help but think that it would have been if a more generic cover had been picked。As usual, this review At times, manga will spoil itself via too revealing covers。 I fear volume 3 is one such case。 Given how SnK operates so much on genuinely impressive twists and turns- which is why I am avoiding any and all discussion about the franchise, given I am, at this point, still two episodes into the Final Season and still I already had crucial developments spoiled (curse you, Quora, curse you!)- I cannot help but think that it would have been if a more generic cover had been picked。As usual, this review assumes that the reader is familiar with the events up to this point。All that aside, this is the volume that finally gives us Levi。 Like many anime viewers who turned to the source work, I was anticipating this moment with baited breath。 It is probably not an overstatement to say that Levi is one of the most popular characters in the entire franchise。 Several polls actually have him at the very top and not just because so many fans simply never warmed up to Eren。 Levi is just that cool, cool enough to motivate an entire spin-off manga about him that even got a lush, sleek and highly produced OVA that is a delight to behold。 That he is voiced by Kamiya Hiroshi has something to do with it, I'm sure; which is very interesting in itself: Levi was already highly loved before the anime which very likely factored into picking this god among seiyuu (yes, he even has 'god' in his name!) to voice him。Levi is presented as an amazing soldier but also as a profoundly humane character。(view spoiler)[Levi cares, despite his subordinates all dying, all the time, around him。 In his introductory scene he manages to kill a titan that was devouring one subordinate but he was not in time to save him。 As he reassures this dying man that his death was not in vain but that it served humanity's cause- which it did not, it was, as so much death, entirely pointless in the large scheme of things- Levi holds his blood splattered hands in his own。 This is a key moment because Levi has a severe case of germaphobia。 Dirtiness in general deeply distresses him and blood never fails to do so。 Usually this is treated as a pet peeve, one of the few instances of humor in what is such a dark story but there is a serious undertone to it。 At this point in the narrative, we see Levi wiping his hands and complaining about dirtiness, right before he rushes to comfort the beforementioned moribund subordinate。 That Levi is so bothered about it is not made entirely clear but we get to see the man's bloody hand against Levi's featureless face and then an entire panel in which all we see is Levi's hand gripping the bloody one。 Only later will the significance of this be made clear and that is one of the aspects that makes SnK such a brilliant work of fiction, it articulates its components in such a way as to make rereading a deeper experience。 It knows how to carry images and concepts across its vast length, modifying them both as the characters grow and as we find more about them。 (hide spoiler)]But while Levi will become the driving force as far as the fandom is concerned, this volume belongs to Eren and Armin。 It establishes their different roles and what different strengths they bring to the terrifying world of SnK。 (view spoiler)[Eren had been chomped by a Titan but lo and behold, Eren morphs into a Titan himself and bursts from inside the Titan's insides。 It is one of those moments that if you have any familiarity with this franchise, you have seen it and been amazed。 I know I was。 But the focus here is not Titan!Eren fighting Titans, as cool as that is to behold。 The focus is that upon returning to his human form, Eren finds himself in another nightmare。 He, along with Mikasa and Armin, find themselves surrounded by armed soldiers ready to shoot them dead because they fear Eren is on the Titan's side。This is a tragedy but also weirdly ironic。 Eren, whose entire reason for living, is to kill all Titans, is now targeted as a Titan himself。 For a double dose of irony, it is precisely this power that makes Eren crucial to humanity: Without it, his would have been yet another death in so many others。 Perhaps not as useless as Levi's unfortunate subordinate as he did save Armin but given that Armin himself would very likely have died anyway, it might have defaulted into very much the same。 Eren ends up using his Titan powers anew to create a partial skeleton in which he shelters Armin and Mikasa from the cannons now shooting at him。 This is the image in the cover。 But it is a very temporary solution。 In the time that takes the cannons to blast again and before the mist ebbs away, they must convince the soldiers around them that Eren is not a threat。And this role falls on Armin。 Armin who has something a minor breakdown as he views himself as the perpetual weak point, the one who had to be rescued from bullies by Eren and Mikasa time and time again。 Even as he doubts himself, Armin and Mikasa do not: their implicit trust in their friend is really remarkable。 It snaps Armin out of his reverie although it is worth pointing out that self-doubt will plague him for a long time to come。 That Armin struggles so hard to believe in himself makes him likeable and believable as a character。 Armin drops his weapons and tries to make a case for Eren's value in battle as the reason for his not just being spared but treasured as the one hope for humanity。 It works but only because Pixis is there, someone who both thinks outside the box and outranks everyone else。 So he can take a gamble on Armin's plan: to use Eren's Titan form to plug the hole in the wall。Putting this plan into action will, of course, not be easy。 Elite soldiers have to protect Titan!Eren from swarming Titans, an operation that will claim the lives of many。 Then Eren himself is not in complete control of his new abilities and upon turning into a Titan, he goes berserk and attacks Mikasa。 And perhaps against all odds, it is Armin to who takes it upon himself to snap Eren out of his reverie- the parallel between Armin's own self-doubt and Eren falling into a cozy childhood dream only occurred to me as I wrote it, which goes to show how much one can extract from SnK- by putting himself on the line。 Armin is not a good soldier, that much has been extensively established so it is not surprising that his hands should shake as he steps onto Titan!Eren's collapsed body and jabs the sword roughly around the neck so as to hit him without killing him。 The mixture of fragility and resolve is perfectly captured。 (hide spoiler)]This volume confirms what I have been saying since volume 1, Eren is not half as naïve as he is usually thought of。 In the dire conflict between human factions, with insubordination about to break loose and while hope, dim as it is, is precariously balanced on the shoulders of a teenager who may or not be able to do what needs be done, Pixis asks him about the notion that faced with an outside threat, humans all gather together。 Eren immediately replies that such ideas are nice but cannot hold true: just look around。 More mature characters than Eren will struggle greatly with conflict between humans。 But Eren learned from a very early age that this is a cruel world and people will be horrible。 And this brings me back to Levi: Levi has assimilated this lesson in a more thorough and coherent way, his upbringing is essentially a proof of how cruel the world of humans truly is。 Whenever Levi manages to care, despite- and perhaps because- of everything, humanity as such has something of a small but essential victory。And this may go a long way into making Levi so immensely popular。 That and Kamiya Hiroshi being god-tier glorious, of course。 。。。more
