The compelling story of two outsiders striving to find their place in an unforgiving world。

Drifters in search of work, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie have nothing in the world except each other and a dream--a dream that one day they will have some land of their own。 Eventually they find work on a ranch in California’s Salinas Valley, but their hopes are doomed as Lennie, struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and feelings of jealousy, becomes a victim of his own strength。 Tackling universal themes such as the friendship of a shared vision, and giving voice to America’s lonely and dispossessed, Of Mice and Men has proved one of Steinbeck’s most popular works, achieving success as a novel, a Broadway play and three acclaimed films。

3。75/5 StarsOne more book that everyone has already read, if they have not been living under a rock。 At least I can join the club now。 I wish I had read it earlier, because Of Mice and Men is, putting it simply, a beautiful book。 The descriptions are beautiful, idyllic - both the natural world and the human environments。 You can see them in your mind's eye - the pool is still, warm water in the river bend, the bunkhouse where Curly faces the wall, the barn with its hay and its streaks of light。 3。75/5 StarsOne more book that everyone has already read, if they have not been living under a rock。 At least I can join the club now。 I wish I had read it earlier, because Of Mice and Men is, putting it simply, a beautiful book。 The descriptions are beautiful, idyllic - both the natural world and the human environments。 You can see them in your mind's eye - the pool is still, warm water in the river bend, the bunkhouse where Curly faces the wall, the barn with its hay and its streaks of light。 These descriptions had the same pacing you come to expect from a rural life, and provide a sense of the goodness which can, presumably, be found when you are away from the din of the grand cities。But these incredible descriptions are juxtaposed over a tragedy of character and humanity that hovers over every single one of the characters in the story。 In some situations, they are even a part of it。 There is a moment in the barn where sun, lighting the hay in bright lines of light slipping through the wooden slat walls, is used to both calm and alarm at the same time。 This description, while less aggressive than Camus' use of the sun on the water and on the gun, is almost as poignant。 Almost as beautiful。Much of this book focuses on discussing masculinity。 There is another scene where a man's dog is put to death and only the executioner seems to hurtle through the moment without any grace。 But these men, strangers to each other, not knowing how to comfort, merely sit in the uncomfortable silence waiting for the gunshot。 It's a telling, keenly observed scene - certainly one of the most important in the novella。 And it is worthy of a great deal of attention。Another subject widely discussed in the book is vulnerability, which is, it seems, the central feature of Steinbeck's Depression。 Vulnerability and the effort to fight against it, that is。 This book is quiet in talking about it, of course - everything about this book, even the most hurried and tragic scenes, is quiet。 But it talks about it carefully。 There are scenes, only a couple, where there are many characters having a conversation, and everybody is talking about the predicament of their life - the predicament of their situation as it compares to the rest。 Nobody, it seems, is perfectly secure。 Everybody can be broken。 That may be what sticks out about this story。 Everybody can be broken。 Except for George maybe。 And Slim, maybe。 And George is clearly broken by the end of the story, because he has chosen to care for Lennie。Of course, there is room for hope。 It takes the face of a ranch, hidden somewhere in George's mind, which can be purchased and owned and developed over time into something that is both self-sufficient and perhaps even profitable。 Hard to say。 It isn't discussed much, but it grabs so much of the imagination! This cloudy future ideal which, for so short a time, seems probable。 Even that, though, can be usurped by the folly of mankind。 Regardless, Of Mice and Men is a good story and I'm glad I finally put it on my read shelf。All things considered, this is a good story。 Interesting quotes that I didn't include in the review: Maybe ever’body in the whole damn world is scared of each other。 Guy don't need no sense to be a nice fella。 Seems to me sometimes it jus' works the other way around。 Take a real smart guy and he ain't hardly ever a nice fella。 。。。more

In secondary school I felt an immediate liking towards this book。 The unwavering duty and loyalty that George had towards Lenny; and the innocence in Lenny's speech。 I was 14 years old when I read this book, we were given an assignment to write about the book and answer questions。 To this day, I always believe that George always knew he had to kill Lenny, he put this off as much as he possibly could until he realised that he'd rather kill Lenny himself than let someone else。 Ther What can I say? A classic that is so much easier to love outside of the confines of a high school English Lit class。 It is a gutsy book about the harshness of carving out a living, all while still having dreams。 About the isolation of being different。 About caring for those who are naturally, and beyond their control, disadvantaged。 I listened to the hook on audio, read by Greg Kinnear。

George and Lennie。 Mice, a puppy, and rabbits。 Set in the 1930’s in California, this is a wonderfully told novella of an unlikely pair of workers with a long history behind them and what happens at the ranch where they last worked。 Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors for a reason。 Stories written as well as this one are the reason why。

The foreshadowing and parallels throughout this book are amazing。 The little details that I didn't even recognize at first (ex。 the fact that Candy's dog and Curly's wife remained unnamed, Lennie and the dog being shot with the same gun, Crooks' book law book being old and worn, etc。) were just amazing。Contrary to the criticism I've heard about the ending, I think that last piece of dialogue from Carlson was perfect because of how unsettling it was in relation to the events of the story。It's tra The foreshadowing and parallels throughout this book are amazing。 The little details that I didn't even recognize at first (ex。 the fact that Candy's dog and Curly's wife remained unnamed, Lennie and the dog being shot with the same gun, Crooks' book law book being old and worn, etc。) were just amazing。Contrary to the criticism I've heard about the ending, I think that last piece of dialogue from Carlson was perfect because of how unsettling it was in relation to the events of the story。It's tragic that Lennie lived in a world that can't accommodate his needs and that George, despite caring for him, knew what would follow and had to make a decision。 Overall, a good book。 。。。more

Hopeful and Heartbreaking。The inference one can draw out of this story is beautifully powerful。 The hope of the future that holds the present day happiness。 The essence of a partner in an otherwise monotonous life。 The bare emotions we humans hold at our cores。 The two sides of a story。 And a wisely put fragment to reflect the myriad of racism that once prevailed。 All of it jam packed and suitably put together in order to keep its readers hooked throughout。
