Summary

The Last Magician meets The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy in this thrilling and atmospheric historical fantasy following a young woman who discovers she has magical powers and is thrust into a battle between witches and wizards。

In 1911 New York City, seventeen-year-old Frances Hallowell spends her days as a seamstress, mourning the mysterious death of her brother months prior。 Everything changes when she’s attacked and a man ends up dead at her feet—her scissors in his neck, and she can’t explain how they got there。

Before she can be condemned as a murderess, two cape-wearing nurses arrive to inform her she is deathly ill and ordered to report to Haxahaven Sanitarium。 But Frances finds Haxahaven isn’t a sanitarium at all: it’s a school for witches。 Within Haxahaven’s glittering walls, Frances finds the sisterhood she craves, but the headmistress warns Frances that magic is dangerous。 Frances has no interest in the small, safe magic of her school, and is instead enchanted by Finn, a boy with magic himself who appears in her dreams and tells her he can teach her all she’s been craving to learn, lessons that may bring her closer to discovering what truly happened to her brother。

Frances’s newfound power attracts the attention of the leader of an ancient order who yearns for magical control of Manhattan。 And who will stop at nothing to have Frances by his side。 Frances must ultimately choose what matters more, justice for her murdered brother and her growing feelings for Finn, or the safety of her city and fellow witches。 What price would she pay for power, and what if the truth is more terrible than she ever imagined?

3。75 stars! (Yes I know I almost never do quarter ratings but here we are)I don’t read a lot of witch books because I’ve found they’re not usually my jam (sad but what can I do) but I really liked this! The audiobook was great and I like that it kept you on your toes。 I wish it was darker though, it started to get dark towards the end but quickly let up。 I’m looking forward to the sequel!

I got really bored mid way through and then the ending just felt messy to me。 It was fun to read during the fall for the vibes, but yeah。。。 it was meh。 2 stars

This is a parable for lovers of the fantasy genre! It's full of cinematic moments and magic, and the ending is fast-paced and thrilling。 I particularly enjoyed the wisdom woven beneath the story, thoughts about friendship, community, and love。 There are more than a few quotable lines, but this is my favorite: "I think perhaps this is how we survive in the world。 Passing little bits of our magic back and forth to each other when the world takes it from us。 It's survival。 It's love。 It's family。" This is a parable for lovers of the fantasy genre! An exciting fantasy novel about a teenager whose magical powers are awakened to save her from an attack by her boss。 From there her life is turned upside down as she discovers the magical world and the conflicting powers who want her for her unique abilities。 Great fast paced book for readers in grades 7+。 I think many different types of readers would like this book- it is more murder mystery than fantasy。

the story kept my attention and the plot was fascinating but the main girl was rather eye roll

I have never hated a main character more than Francis。 I found myself actually yelling at at points during reading。 I think the magic and storyline is interesting but didn’t like any of the main characters, they seemed underdeveloped and I couldn’t follow a reasonable path for why they were doing what they were doing。

This book was truly beautifully written。 The historical pieces of the suffragette movement, the way magic is taught to the women of Haxahaven, & the love triangle Frances finds herself in are all incredibly done & well thought out。 Sasha Peyton Smith is truly a very talented writer。 However, I had the hardest time connecting with/relating to Frances。 There were plenty of moments I felt her pain & certain words she thought & spoke reverberated。 But overall, I found her selfish & rude to the peopl This book was truly beautifully written。 The historical pieces of the suffragette movement, the way magic is taught to the women of Haxahaven, & the love triangle Frances finds herself in are all incredibly done & well thought out。 Sasha Peyton Smith is truly a very talented writer。 However, I had the hardest time connecting with/relating to Frances。 There were plenty of moments I felt her pain & certain words she thought & spoke reverberated。 But overall, I found her selfish & rude to the people who loved her most & simply wanted to help her。 In the end, she somewhat makes up for it, but I still just found myself wanting to shout at her! I also felt there were times where things felt slightly repetitive in terms of the girls magic lessons, Frances’s internal dialogue, & a few other moments that would be giving spoilers。 To go back to the positives though, my favorite thing was the way the unlikely sisterhood the Haxahaven girls develops。 Maxine & Lena are incredible friends who while they have their flaws are still so supportive of their friend, Frances。 。。。more

These characters made me so angry。 Yet I did love the story and was insanely curious and hooked till the end。 This was the biggest betrayal since The Red Queen

I'm 100% positive I haven't stopped thinking about this book since finishing it last week。 It was such a fascinating combination of witchcraft and mystery--two of my favorite things。 Once I dove into the pages I couldn't put this book down。 There were so many twists, and while I guessed some of them a couple took me by complete surprise! The cliff hanger at the end has me very curious for the sequel。 I'm 100% positive I haven't stopped thinking about this book since finishing it last week。 It was such a fascinating combination of witchcraft and mystery--two of my favorite things。 Once I dove into the pages I couldn't put this book down。 There were so many twists, and while I guessed some of them a couple took me by complete surprise! Didn't really like this book, and didn't end up finishing it。 I bought it for the hype I saw on bookstagram。 It was slow moving and I didn't find myself connected to the character。 Didn't really like this book, and didn't end up finishing it。 I bought it for the hype I saw on bookstagram。 It was slow moving and I didn't find myself connected to the character。 。。。more

I had this book in my TBR for awhile and once I seen it was on KU I was very excited to finally read it…。sadly it just wasn’t for me and I DNFd it after 101 pages。 The beginning seemed pretty good but it just consistently stayed on the slow burning side。 I may come back to it at a later time。

Violent from beginning to end。 Not my cup of tea

In general i loved the story, the author is very talented。 I loved the characters, but i had a very hard time with the main character, Frances。 I felt that she was very rushed and her stupid mistakes rather annoyed me。 But this was a very interesting read and i am excited for The Witch Hunt!
