Summary

A stunning, lyrical coming-of-age novel set in the rolling foothills of the Appalachians in which a young girl, with only the compass of her father's imagination, must navigate racism, sexism, and the dark secrets that will haunt her for the rest of her life。

"A girl comes of age against the knife。"

So begins the story of Betty Carpenter。 Born in a bathtub in Arkansas in 1954 to a Cherokee father and white mother, Betty is the sixth of eight siblings。 The world they inhabit is one of poverty, racism, abuse, and violence--both from outside the family, and also, devastatingly, from within。 After years on the road, searching in vain for a better life, the Carpenters return to their hometown of Breathed, Ohio, in northern Appalachia。 There, they move into a sprawling wreck of a farmhouse that local legend says is cursed。 The townsfolk decide the Carpenters are cursed, too: "My mother gave birth to eight of us," Betty tells us in her frank, wry voice。 "More than one would die for no good reason in the prizewinning years of their youth。 Some blamed God for taking too few。 Others accused the Devil of leaving too many。"

But Betty is resilient。 Her father's inventive stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination and even in the face of tragedy and death, her creativity is irrepressible。 Against overwhelming odds, she may be the first member of her family to break the cycle of abuse and trauma--and escape。

The writing alone in this book is incredible。 It shines particularly with the relationship between Betty and her father, and the way they both use the power of myth and storytelling to survive hard times and empower their family。 Beyond those parts, I struggle to rate this one。 It needs just about every content warning possible: death of a child, incest, rape of a child, assault。 It also lacks much of a plot beyond simply the story of Betty’s family — I kept waiting for a central conflict but th The writing alone in this book is incredible。 It shines particularly with the relationship between Betty and her father, and the way they both use the power of myth and storytelling to survive hard times and empower their family。 Beyond those parts, I struggle to rate this one。 It needs just about every content warning possible: death of a child, incest, rape of a child, assault。 It also lacks much of a plot beyond simply the story of Betty’s family — I kept waiting for a central conflict but that’s not really the point。 But the characters come alive in these pages, and McDaniels certainly honors her mother in this homage to her family。 This is definitely one that you have to be in the right mindset for and prepare yourself for the secondary trauma of reading it。 But overall the writing is so beautiful with powerful imagery, so I’d say it’s worth it。 。。。more

A great book filled with generational trauma, Indigenous People’s shared history, and love。 Would recommend someone read the TWs before reading — because it is such a heavy book。

The writing is exquisite。 Although it ends on a somewhat uplifting note, this story terribly sad。 I wish it would have come with trigger warnings for incest, sexual abuse, and animal cruelty。 I cried several times throughout this story。

Almost impossibly heavy content that is so exquisitely written, it’s given wings。 Highlighting the specific set of staggering obstacles a woman of color faced in the 60-70s certainly gives the book a sad and tense tone but one that’s tied up with a ribbon of compassion and strength。 **I would highly recommend a quick look at content warnings on this book before diving in, though I have no personal history that relates to the subject matter, I found many parts difficult to read and didn’t realize Almost impossibly heavy content that is so exquisitely written, it’s given wings。 Highlighting the specific set of staggering obstacles a woman of color faced in the 60-70s certainly gives the book a sad and tense tone but one that’s tied up with a ribbon of compassion and strength。 **I would highly recommend a quick look at content warnings on this book before diving in, though I have no personal history that relates to the subject matter, I found many parts difficult to read and didn’t realize just how upsetting it would be。 ** 。。。more

This book is one of the most achingly beautiful things I’ve ever read。 It’s sadness seems enveloped in a field of flowers that uplift you in the face of it’s darkness。 Lyrical, poetic and one of a kind。

I connected to this book, and every smudge of ink in it, with an intensity that ripped my heart open in every way it needed to be。 I will cherish this book forever。 This book is beyond ratings, beyond anything I could comprehend for myself without McDaniel’s overflowing of knowledge about living, womanhood, plight of the native american, siblinghood, loss, and grief。 I cannot muster the words to truly explain the deep love I have for this novel。

I've read my fair share of sad books but this is definitely one of the saddest yet。 Brutal and tragic, but so beautifully written and powerful。 Couldn't see through my tears at several points while reading。 This is one of those books that stay with you for a long time。 I'm so glad I was able to read it。 I've read my fair share of sad books but this is definitely one of the saddest yet。 Brutal and tragic, but so beautifully written and powerful。 Couldn't see through my tears at several points while reading。 This is one of those books that stay with you for a long time。 I'm so glad I was able to read it。 。。。more

More like 4。5 stars。 It was a beautiful, but heavy read。 I’m not sure I was completely up for everything this story had to offer, but I’m glad I finally picked it up and read it。

Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I’ve ever read。 I do want to note that if you plan on reading Betty, it does cover sensitive subjects like rape, incest, suicide, and other trauma。 Much of the story is true, based upon the McDaniel’s mother’s coming of age (Betty is the author’s mother in real life)。 As such, the tender subjects are sometimes difficult to read。 In fact, the story of Betty’s mother’s childhood abuse will haunt me for the rest of my life。 But amidst the story of her Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I’ve ever read。 I do want to note that if you plan on reading Betty, it does cover sensitive subjects like rape, incest, suicide, and other trauma。 Much of the story is true, based upon the McDaniel’s mother’s coming of age (Betty is the author’s mother in real life)。 As such, the tender subjects are sometimes difficult to read。 In fact, the story of Betty’s mother’s childhood abuse will haunt me for the rest of my life。 But amidst the story of her family’s pain, there is also so much beauty in this book。 In fact, it’s hard to believe how beautiful a book about generational trauma can be。 McDaniel’s writing is poetic and concise—and just stunning。 The relationship between Betty and her father, Landon, underscores that we are not just the trauma of our ancestors and lives—we are also the power and wisdom of them。 That the long lineage of secrets we carry in our bones have the power to inflict or ameliorate wounds。 I particularly loved the Cherokee storytelling within the book。 Not only was it informative, but it created a tangible love between a family so fractured from trauma。 It underscored the healing wisdom we can inherit from each other and the Earth。 But maybe most importantly, it depicted a man who deeply loved his daughter and wanted to empower her to be brave enough to face the world despite her odds。 。。。more

。。。more

Wow, this book is impeccably written。 Despite it being really long, the pacing is constant and the story flows really well。 I was hooked from start to finish。 The story is incredibly dark and tragic, and there is a long long list of TW's。 Balancing out the darkness is one of the sweetest, most touching, and beautiful relationships between Betty and her dad。 I loved reading about him teaching Betty (and in extension, me) about Cherokee customs and traditions, teachings about life, nature, love, a Wow, this book is impeccably written。 Despite it being really long, the pacing is constant and the story flows really well。 I was hooked from start to finish。 The story is incredibly dark and tragic, and there is a long long list of TW's。 Balancing out the darkness is one of the sweetest, most touching, and beautiful relationships between Betty and her dad。 I loved reading about him teaching Betty (and in extension, me) about Cherokee customs and traditions, teachings about life, nature, love, and death。 I became so attached to so many of the characters and grew very protective of them。 I cried, I smiled, I was angry, and had to take breaks to cool off! I'll never have enough words to describe how much I 'love' this book。After reading the e-book last year, I'm very glad to have bought a copy and I annotated it this time。Let's say I quickly ran out of 'trauma' tabs。。。 'racism' tabs being a close second。But how I love the parts about family and the close bond to Betty's ancestors。 It filled my heart even though it was often drained the second after。 I'll never have enough words to describe how much I 'love' this book。After reading the e-book last year, I'm very glad to have bought a copy and I annotated it this time。Let's say I quickly ran out of 'trauma' tabs。。。 'racism' tabs being a close second。But how I love the parts about family and the close bond to Betty's ancestors。 It filled my heart even though it was often drained the second after。 。。。more

Excruciating family drama。 When you think the worst is over, this story hits you with even more horrifying things。。 I don’t say these stories shouldn’t be told。 But they should also convey a silver lining which in this book was of course the figure of the father, but because he seems so naive and unaware (or at least his awareness is never explicit), it seems even sadder。 I feel relieved to have finished it。 Made me think about « Little life » a lot, which I think I actually prefer。

This is the story of the authors' mother, Betty, growing up poor and half-Cherokee in 50's America。 Betty's relationship with her Cherokee father provided such poetic folklore and the most beautiful storytelling I have ever read。 The story it's self was a hard read and a tear jerker。 I rarely read books twice, but this novel will be one of those I do。 This is the story of the authors' mother, Betty, growing up poor and half-Cherokee in 50's America。 Betty's relationship with her Cherokee father provided such poetic folklore and the most beautiful storytelling I have ever read。 The story it's self was a hard read and a tear jerker。 I rarely read books twice, but this novel will be one of those I do。 。。。more
