3rd time reading in 40 years。 Very enjoyable!!

Classic road trip where there’s like a tired grandpa that leaves everyone halfway through and returns when he wants, a king returning to his glory that is very gruff, 12 other rambunctious children and uncles, and just a little guy that wants bacon。

Tolkien is great as a narrator, and even funny。 The story in itself to tell the truth is not of the greatest of fantasious imagination, we can say even a bit banal, but it's great the WAY in which he tells the story, really entertaining。 Especially the end in my opinion is been a bit banal, as if he didn't have any more will to write a proper chapter about it, lol Tolkien is great as a narrator, and even funny。 The story in itself to tell the truth is not of the greatest of fantasious imagination, we can say even a bit banal, but it's great the WAY in which he tells the story, really entertaining。 Especially the end in my opinion is been a bit banal, as if he didn't have any more will to write a proper chapter about it, lol 。。。more

rlly similar style to lotr。 i don't rlly get how Mr tolkien thought this was more for kids but ok。 less muddy descriptions n genealogy I guess。 the adventure is p straightforward, tho it has its constant walking n its meanderings, classic tolkien。 the ending is not very surprising but all in all it does set the tone of the whole worldbuilding and it is a pleasant read; at some points, it's funny n cheeky in a welcomed way but it's always in passing。 (it def treats itself like a serious work, tho rlly similar style to lotr。 i don't rlly get how Mr tolkien thought this was more for kids but ok。 less muddy descriptions n genealogy I guess。 the adventure is p straightforward, tho it has its constant walking n its meanderings, classic tolkien。 the ending is not very surprising but all in all it does set the tone of the whole worldbuilding and it is a pleasant read; at some points, it's funny n cheeky in a welcomed way but it's always in passing。 (it def treats itself like a serious work, though it could be camp it just isn't going there at all) 。。。more

After many years I decided to re-read the Hobbit and see if I would still enjoy it。 It was really fun reading and I actually was surprised how much I managed to forget in the last 14 or so years since I last read it。The book is lighter read compared to The Lord of the Rings and it is more of a fairytale and not as heavy with references to the earlier history of Middle Earth, although there are still some, like the two blades from Gondolin。 There were some surprises for me, one is that actually t After many years I decided to re-read the Hobbit and see if I would still enjoy it。 It was really fun reading and I actually was surprised how much I managed to forget in the last 14 or so years since I last read it。The book is lighter read compared to The Lord of the Rings and it is more of a fairytale and not as heavy with references to the earlier history of Middle Earth, although there are still some, like the two blades from Gondolin。 There were some surprises for me, one is that actually the name Thranduil is not even mentioned, I got so used to it in the movies, that this came as a surprise。Overall, I really enjoyed the book and in time I will get back to it again, once I forget the details once more。 It definitely did not lose the appeal。 。。。more

So glad I decided to try the audiobook。 For me it was far more enjoyable to listen to than to read。 It was like sitting around a campfire and hearing of a great adventure。

Took my time but I got there in the end! First time reading this for about 30 years! My dad used to read parts of it to me when I was younger and he did all the voices!

I love love love the Hobbit but I am having a hard time reading this。 I think it's because I have already seen the movie and sticking with slowly reading the pages isn't doing it for me。 I love love love the Hobbit but I am having a hard time reading this。 I think it's because I have already seen the movie and sticking with slowly reading the pages isn't doing it for me。 。。。more

I've been a fan of the LOTR movies and the Hobbit Trilogy so I finally decided "screw it- let's read some Tolkien。" Geez I should have done it years ago。 Bilbo is my spirit animal; a good person who grows into a hero and who loves his home with an intense passion。 This novel made me happy and fuzzy on the inside。 I've been a fan of the LOTR movies and the Hobbit Trilogy so I finally decided "screw it- let's read some Tolkien。" Geez I should have done it years ago。 Bilbo is my spirit animal; a good person who grows into a hero and who loves his home with an intense passion。 This novel made me happy and fuzzy on the inside。 。。。more

I listened to this one and there is so much extra noise-music and background sounds, it was a bit distracting。 I’m not “into” the story yet, but am using this as my intro into the Lord of the Rings series I’m going to read next。

Such an amazing book! What enhanced my experience was reading the book along with an audiobook by Rob Inglis。 Fantastic narration, he gave different voices to different characters and sang the songs。 I doubt I would have enjoyed the book as much as I did if not for the audiobook。Having said that, the book was pure joy。 I fell in love with Bilbo and Gandalf。 They'll surely remain to be my favorite characters。 Some say "The Hobbit" is a children's book。 I agree。 Your children are really fortunate a Such an amazing book! What enhanced my experience was reading the book along with an audiobook by Rob Inglis。 Fantastic narration, he gave different voices to different characters and sang the songs。 I doubt I would have enjoyed the book as much as I did if not for the audiobook。Having said that, the book was pure joy。 I fell in love with Bilbo and Gandalf。 They'll surely remain to be my favorite characters。 Some say "The Hobbit" is a children's book。 I agree。 Your children are really fortunate and you really a great parent if you are reading "The Hobbit" to them at bedtime。 Tolkien's language flows like honey, he uses words constructed with great delicacy。 Never comes a moment in the novel, where you might feel bored, never comes a moment that feels forced or irrelevant。 There might be moments that seem far too easy* and one might say that Bilbo gets fortunate far too many times but mind you, that was Tolkien's outlook。 He wrote it for children (though anyone can enjoy it to the fullest)。Things I hope could have been better。:1*。 Smaug dies in a chapter after being shot by an arrow into his weak spot。 A new character unknown to the reader vanquished the dragon。 This comes as a shock as the reader half expects it after all the invincibily built up for the dragon in the previous pages。 I felt disappointed but on pondering for a moment I concurred。 Although, I would definitely have loved a better ending to the dragon。2。 I felt that Thoren, Kili and Fili were killed off the pages and that wasn't a good service to the characters。 But that isn't a big qualm considering the closure that was given to the death。 。。。more

I recently watched the Lord of the Rings movies and out of them all, I preferred the hobbit, in fact I loved it to the point I would say it’s one of my all time favourite movies, so knowing how much I enjoyed the movies, I decided I wanted to read the books。My amazing husband surprised me and hunted down some limited edition copies which are beautiful but the naked hardback itself is stunning! I finally got round to picking it up when our online fantasy book club picked it for our bank holiday read so I got stuck in。I enjoyed the book, I knew the story, it was easy to read。 The illustrations throughout the book were brilliant。 I found as I was following the story I was massively comparing it to the movie which is why I generally have a rule, book before movie。 Normally the book trumps the movie for me but this was different for me with the Hobbit。 I found parts missing from the book that were shown in the movie and it felt that parts were skimmed over, parts I found detrimental to the story whilst watching the movie。 I still loved the story and I can’t wait to dive into The Lord of the Rings which is going to take me a while to get through, but I do recommend reading The Hobbit and if you’ve not seen the films, read the book first! The movie steals the magic! 。。。more
