Still the greatest worldbuilding achievement and most epic tale ever told。Nothing compares to it。 Now ready to watch Rings of Power。

This book was SO hard to read (why must everybody have a million different names?) but I love lotr so obsessed with the lore

There is a great story here or rather a tapestry of stories some of which are wonderfully written with poetic and flowery prose (Especially Beren and Luthien) but it's bogged down by extremely dry and sometimes boring world building。 The themes are also a mixed bag similarly。 There are some great ideas about love and loss but the outdated ideas show up often - especially again with all the mentions of swarthy men and easterlings。 There is a great story here or rather a tapestry of stories some of which are wonderfully written with poetic and flowery prose (Especially Beren and Luthien) but it's bogged down by extremely dry and sometimes boring world building。 The themes are also a mixed bag similarly。 There are some great ideas about love and loss but the outdated ideas show up often - especially again with all the mentions of swarthy men and easterlings。 。。。more

Love it。 Written like myths of old, the stories within are wonderfully laid out and add so much depth to an incredible setting。

Went into it thinking it would be extra LOTR content but was very wrong。 It's more like a bible of LOTR lore。 Very content dense with too many names and places to remember。 The writing language is also pretty complicated and I recommend setting aside lots of time to read through if interested。 Stopping between chapters made them impossible to fully understand。 Really wanted to enjoy it but it was too much。 Would like to reread later with more time to focus Went into it thinking it would be extra LOTR content but was very wrong。 It's more like a bible of LOTR lore。 Very content dense with too many names and places to remember。 The writing language is also pretty complicated and I recommend setting aside lots of time to read through if interested。 Stopping between chapters made them impossible to fully understand。 Really wanted to enjoy it but it was too much。 Would like to reread later with more time to focus 。。。more

Not a novel but a collection of tales from the Elder Days of Middle-Earth。 If you read the Lord of the Rings and thought "I wish Appendixes A and B had been 300+ pages long!", this is the book for you!

a wonderful reread, albeit a little dizzying! there's something unmistakably nostalgic about tolkien, and that may just be my childhood proximity to his work。 i am quite unsure about how nine-year-old me managed to digest this the first time and remember things about it as well! this is a fantastic and sweeping story that is truly venerable in terms of worldbuilding and design。 it's truly amazing that i was forced to reread it and i'm glad i did。 a wonderful reread, albeit a little dizzying! there's something unmistakably nostalgic about tolkien, and that may just be my childhood proximity to his work。 i am quite unsure about how nine-year-old me managed to digest this the first time and remember things about it as well! this is a fantastic and sweeping story that is truly venerable in terms of worldbuilding and design。 it's truly amazing that i was forced to reread it and i'm glad i did。 。。。more

(3。5 stars) (Audiobook) This work looks at the First Age and the foundations of the world that JRR Tolkien introduced us to in the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series。 It reads like a mythology book, where it starts out with the creation story, the introduction of the key villain and how the world evolved from there。 Some familiar names and characters appear here, but at times, it can be easy to lose the thread of the characters and the story arcs。 The ending of the book brings the reader into t (3。5 stars) (Audiobook) This work looks at the First Age and the foundations of the world that JRR Tolkien introduced us to in the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series。 It reads like a mythology book, where it starts out with the creation story, the introduction of the key villain and how the world evolved from there。 Some familiar names and characters appear here, but at times, it can be easy to lose the thread of the characters and the story arcs。 The ending of the book brings the reader into the 3rd Age and ties back into the Lord of the Rings saga。Admittedly, I have been trying to get though this work for years and years, but with the audiobook, I was finally able to read it and get through it all。 It was ok, but unlikely that I will reread it anytime soon, unless the Amazon Ring of Power series drives me to it。 The narrator is good but the tales are ok。 The die hard fan will appreciate it, but the casual fan may not dig this one quite so much。 。。。more

I marvel at how but one man is capable of creating myth of such magnificence and subtlety as Tolkien did。 Let us preserve it now for our heirs to see even as we saw the splendour of Arda。

I’ve been intimidated by all of Tolkien’s works for a long time but have always wanted to read them。 Since the Rings of Power series is coming out tomorrow I decided to finally read the Silmarillion。While some parts were definitely difficult to read due to the language, it was well worth the challenge。 I loved making connections and better understanding parts of the lore that I’d seen in the movies time and time again yet never truly understood。

I finished this book via Audible which is cheating。 On a test, I would get under 50%。This book is a hard read, but there is some good stuff in it。

I put off reading the Silmarillion for many years because I thought it was going to be dry。。。 and some of it was。 Especially in the beginning, the descriptions of the creation of the world are purposefully biblical, exceedingly mythic and abstract。 But as the story of middle-earth unfolds, moving away from the effortless acts of the gods and shifting toward the deeds of people with real skin the game, so to speak, it becomes surprisingly engaging。 In the end I enjoyed it much more than I thought I put off reading the Silmarillion for many years because I thought it was going to be dry。。。 and some of it was。 Especially in the beginning, the descriptions of the creation of the world are purposefully biblical, exceedingly mythic and abstract。 But as the story of middle-earth unfolds, moving away from the effortless acts of the gods and shifting toward the deeds of people with real skin the game, so to speak, it becomes surprisingly engaging。 In the end I enjoyed it much more than I thought I might, but I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't already have a real love for Lord of the Rings, and a desire to wade neck-deep into Tolkien's extensive worldbuilding。 。。。more

An expansive history of middle-earth that is perhaps only for the diehard enthusiast。The Silmarillion details middle-earth’s history from its creation to the end of the third age。 It is useful in that it answers a lot of questions raised in the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, but it mostly failed to be as entertaining as those works。 I found the first part of the Silmarillion to be quite dry。 The second half is better and contains more narrative, but only Beren and Luthien was highly enjoyable An expansive history of middle-earth that is perhaps only for the diehard enthusiast。The Silmarillion details middle-earth’s history from its creation to the end of the third age。 It is useful in that it answers a lot of questions raised in the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, but it mostly failed to be as entertaining as those works。 I found the first part of the Silmarillion to be quite dry。 The second half is better and contains more narrative, but only Beren and Luthien was highly enjoyable。 The overall execution is still very good, I’m just not sure if the way to consume this is as a straight novel。 Reading piecemeal to answer questions you have is probably better。Recommended to middle-earth enthusiast or people who love world building。 If the first chapter is unbearable to you, just read Beren and Luthien, the Numenor section, and the rings of power section。 。。。more

Amazing! Beautiful! But definitely a difficult read。 The writing style and language Tolkien uses here is quite hard to follow at times and feels very bible like。 But once you get used to it and grasp the image, he has painted it is quite beautiful。 I read this alongside audiobook which looked immensely。 I could get a feel for the language and the hear the proper pronunciations。 I also read this with a friend, and we would discuss the chapters afterwards, helping each other grasp the story or ans Amazing! I forget how good this is until I start reading it again and then I become obsessed and can't talk about anything else。 It's a major red flag for me when someone tells me they like fantasy or Tolkien specifically but just can't get into this one。 Literally the height of modern myth making。 I forget how good this is until I start reading it again and then I become obsessed and can't talk about anything else。 It's a major red flag for me when someone tells me they like fantasy or Tolkien specifically but just can't get into this one。 Literally the height of modern myth making。 。。。more

Okay, sacrilegious I know, but my approach to this is as an encyclopedia I need to consult in order to prepare for Rings of Power on tv。 So I'm getting the back stories on the trees, the jewels, the forgers, the weapons of power, the various divine beings and wizards, the ages and the long-simmering resentments, battles and attempts to right ancient wrongs。 I'm reading chapters out of order and whimsically, focusing on characters and myths I'm most drawn to, and just trying to accumulate some Mi Okay, sacrilegious I know, but my approach to this is as an encyclopedia I need to consult in order to prepare for Rings of Power on tv。 So I'm getting the back stories on the trees, the jewels, the forgers, the weapons of power, the various divine beings and wizards, the ages and the long-simmering resentments, battles and attempts to right ancient wrongs。 I'm reading chapters out of order and whimsically, focusing on characters and myths I'm most drawn to, and just trying to accumulate some Middle Earth knowledge with the help of a lot of podcasts and youtube videos from real experts along the way。 It helps to visualize everything, since nothing happens in a real plot-development, urgent way like the Hobbit and the trilogy。 But such beautiful beautiful beings of all kinds, an epic scale that engages the mind if not the heart。 。。。more

This was pretty much exactly like I expected it to be。 Super interesting for a LOTR fan but also somewhat boring because it is a "history text"。 I read another review that said it read like a mix of an encyclopedia and the King James version of Genesis。 Made me laugh, but it is true。 Still, it got 4 stars because I love Middle Earth! The Silmarillion is a challenging read。 I recommend reading chapter by chapter and discussing with a friend or following along with a discussion podcast。 Other than the challenge of reading and understanding it, it offers insight into the history of elves that provides reasoning for how they behave in The Lord of The Rings。
