This is the first book by Simon Beckett that I've read， so I had no specific expectations。 I groaned slightly at the fact that the main character， firearms officer Jonah， is "damaged"。 His young son disappeared some years previously， and he still hasn't come to terms with that or with the subsequent fallout in his private life。 Note this is not a spoiler， as it's outlined in the back cover blurb。However I was intrigued by the scenario outlined in the first few pages， where Jonah responds to a p This is the first book by Simon Beckett that I've read， so I had no specific expectations。 I groaned slightly at the fact that the main character， firearms officer Jonah， is "damaged"。 His young son disappeared some years previously， and he still hasn't come to terms with that or with the subsequent fallout in his private life。 Note this is not a spoiler， as it's outlined in the back cover blurb。However I was intrigued by the scenario outlined in the first few pages， where Jonah responds to a plea for help from a former friend and colleague with whom he's lost touch， and I wanted to know more。 The main plot is quite dark and violent， with several murders， but this plotline runs side-by-side with Jonah's continued attempts to find out the truth about his son's disappearance。 I wasn't sure how credible some of the plot was - for example Jonah seemed to recover incredibly quickly from a very bad injury， and was physically able to do much more than I would have expected。 But I'm no medical expert， and I assume the author did his research！I didn't find the book "gripping"， but it was intriguing enough to keep me reading through the various twists and turns of the plot until the final and somewhat surprising conclusion。 A good holiday read， but too much action and not enough character development for my taste。 。。。more

Jonah Colley a firearms officer for the police gets a phone call from a work colleague， Gavin， asking to meet him in a disused warehouse in London at an aptly named place called Slaughter Quay。 On arrival he's met with his worst nightmare， his colleague no where to be seen and bodies underneath plastic sheeting （and one woman was still just about alive）。 But then he is brutally attacked and next thing he is aware of is waking up in hospital， with head injuries and multiple other injuries。 Thinki Jonah Colley a firearms officer for the police gets a phone call from a work colleague， Gavin， asking to meet him in a disused warehouse in London at an aptly named place called Slaughter Quay。 On arrival he's met with his worst nightmare， his colleague no where to be seen and bodies underneath plastic sheeting （and one woman was still just about alive）。 But then he is brutally attacked and next thing he is aware of is waking up in hospital， with head injuries and multiple other injuries。 Thinking back to 10 years ago， when he had taken his son to the playground， he was then day dreaming about Gavin and his wife Marie， they were going out as a foursome that night， then to his utter horror he has fallen asleep in the park and when he awakes his son is nowhere to be seen！！Understandably his wife doesn't forgive him and even Jonah doesn't forgive himself for what has happened， and I don't think anyone would live through both traumas and remain unscathed。After Corinne Daly， a reporter， leads him to believe she is a therapist， Jonah makes a big mistake in revealing several things he shouldn't have， and then she seems to be almost stalking Jonah， trying her hardest to get a "big story"。 She is even at Gavins memorial service， so eager to find out snippets of information。 Is she going to be the one to uncover the truth？This story really has some atmospheric locations and the storyline really gets to you。Set in dual timelines in the beginning part， though it is easy to follow as it's clearly marked 10 years ago on those chapters。 A great read where I found myself wondering who did what， and why？ As you near the end I found myself reading wondering how， what， who？ What will the outcome be and who will end up being killed and who will be unscathed or will they？Great storyline running through with both the missing child and the Slaughter Quay murders and I think this definitely would make a great TV series or streaming programme。 This is the first in this series featuring Jonah Colley， definitely one to keep an eye out for。 。。。more

Das neue Buch von Simon Beckett erwartete ich mit großer Spannung。 Vor allem da es sich um eine neue Reihe handelte， hatte ich große Erwartungen。 Leider wurden diese enttäuscht。 Das was bei der „David Hunter-Reihe“ gelungen ist， fehlt hier: Raffinierte， Spannende Wendungen。 Ich habe das Buch als Hörbuch konsumiert， genauso wie den letzten David Hunter。

I've not read Simon Beckett previously， so it was ideal that I came across him as he was launching a new series for his latest release。 This thriller series focuses on firearms Police Office Jonah Colley， it's fair to say that his got plenty of backstory for readers to instantly care about him。 10 years previously Jonah has fell a sleep on a park bench where his 4 year old son Theo disappeared。 The main protagonist is still wreaked with guilt all these years later。 At the same time Jonah's old f I've not read Simon Beckett previously， so it was ideal that I came across him as he was launching a new series for his latest release。 This thriller series focuses on firearms Police Office Jonah Colley， it's fair to say that his got plenty of backstory for readers to instantly care about him。 10 years previously Jonah has fell a sleep on a park bench where his 4 year old son Theo disappeared。 The main protagonist is still wreaked with guilt all these years later。 At the same time Jonah's old friend DS Gavin Mackinney sends him a message out of the blue asking for him to visit an abandoned warehouse。 Obviously the worse possible scenario happens as Jonah discovers four bodies and is subsequently attacked - then inturn becomes the prime suspect。 With such an explosive opening I had high hopes with this one， it was definitely an entertaining read though I found the middle section dragged slightly。I'd be curious to see how I find his popular David Hunter series。 。。。more

Mit „Die Chemie des Todes“ gelang dem Briten Simon Beckett einst ein Weltbestseller， den wohl kaum ein Thriller-Fan *nicht* gelesen hat und der längt als moderner Klassiker gilt。 In den letzten Jahren hat der Ruf des Autors aber etwas gelitten， was neben dem kontrovers aufgenommenem Standalone „Der Hof“ wohl auch an den zuletzt eher schwächeren Fortsetzungen seiner David-Hunter-Reihe lag。 Vielleicht auch deshalb wagt sich Beckett noch einmal an etwas Neues und versucht sich mit „Die Verlorenen“ Mit „Die Chemie des Todes“ gelang dem Briten Simon Beckett einst ein Weltbestseller， den wohl kaum ein Thriller-Fan *nicht* gelesen hat und der längt als moderner Klassiker gilt。 In den letzten Jahren hat der Ruf des Autors aber etwas gelitten， was neben dem kontrovers aufgenommenem Standalone „Der Hof“ wohl auch an den zuletzt eher schwächeren Fortsetzungen seiner David-Hunter-Reihe lag。 Vielleicht auch deshalb wagt sich Beckett noch einmal an etwas Neues und versucht sich mit „Die Verlorenen“ an einer zweiten Thriller-Reihe。Allerdings traut sich der Brite dann doch nicht allzu weit aus dem Fenster， denn die meisten Zutaten dieses Auftaktromans sind für erfahrene Leser:innen längst Standardkost， was bereits bei der neuen Hauptfigur beginnt。 Im Gegensatz zur Figur des David Hunter， mit dem Beckett damals den Beruf des Forensikers dem Mainstream bekannt machte und frischen Wind ins Genre brachte， ist Jonah Colley regelrecht das Klischee des Ermittlers vom Typ „einsamer Wolf“: Familientragödie， kaputte Ehe， ungepflegtes Auftreten， Junggesellenbude und der obligatorische Hang zu gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzungen – kurz gesagt， ein „Ermittler der alten Schule“。Dazu passt dann auch die Story， in der Jonah von einem alten Freund aus der einst glücklicheren Vergangenheit um Hilfe gebeten wird und sich plötzlich an einem Tatort mit vier Leichen wiederfindet – inklusive der des früheren Bekannten。 Wenig überraschend ist， dass dieser Fall auch das persönliche Trauma des Protagonisten neu aufwühlt， nämlich das Verschwinden seines kleines Sohnes Theo vor zehn Jahren， der vermeintlich bei einem Unglück ertrank， aber nie gefunden wurde。 All das macht wenig Hoffnung auf ein Thriller-Highlight， dennoch kann Simon Beckett seine Routine ausspielen und liefert einen doch kurzweiligen und spannenden Roman， der zwar selten überrascht， aber nichtsdestotrotz über weite Strecken fesselt。 Die Figur des Jonah Colley kann zwar mit einem David Hunter zu keinem Zeitpunkt mithalten， schlägt sich aber im wahrsten Wortsinne wacker und bringt durchaus Reihenpotenzial mit。 So dürfte „Die Verlorenen“ zwar letztlich auch kaum Beckett-Kritiker zufriedenstellen， unterhaltsam ist dieser raue， dreckige Thriller aber allemal - vor allem in der ebenso rustikalen Lesung von Beckett-Urgestein Johannes Steck。 。。。more

4。5。 The writing is excellent as always。 There were a lot of diversions and I had no idea where Jonah Colley and the story were headed。 The beginning was very intense and had me hooked immediately。 I’m looking forward to the next book because it’s time for Colley to move on and I’m curious to see what he is going to next。
