Summary

Supremely meh。I don’t know if he caught lightning in a bottle with A Gentleman in Moscow, but this ain’t it。

Great book, personal choice, loved the story, just too long。

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! The writing is beautiful, the characters interesting, and the plot was engaging and thoughtful。 Book club enjoyed discussing how the backgrounds of the various main characters shaped the decisions they made throughout the novel and the blurry lines between vice and virtue。 I highly recommend this novel for any book club and can't wait to read another book by Amor Towles。 I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! I read this because I liked A Gentleman in Moscow。 The prose is equally lovely。 The story is unexpected。 The way the plot is woven is thoughtful and evocative。 The characters are unique。 There are moments that are breathtaking in their beauty and humanity。 There are some truly heartbreaking moments, too。 Some story threads are tied together in surprising and hopeful ways, while others are left hanging without resolution。 I think I liked it, overall, but I’m still processing。 The ending is abrupt I read this because I liked A Gentleman in Moscow。 The prose is equally lovely。 The story is unexpected。 The way the plot is woven is thoughtful and evocative。 The characters are unique。 There are moments that are breathtaking in their beauty and humanity。 There are some truly heartbreaking moments, too。 Some story threads are tied together in surprising and hopeful ways, while others are left hanging without resolution。 I think I liked it, overall, but I’m still processing。 The ending is abrupt and I’m not sure how I feel about it。 I’d recommend it to some readers, but other readers would be given cautions。 And I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone—there is some sexual content that I found unnecessary, as well as several instances of strong language。 。。。more

Just a great story。 Well developed characters - with questions about what is considered moral and right。 Midwest boys traveling with and encountering people along the way that shapes the boys, and the boys shaping the somewhat unscrupulous individuals。 Towles knows how to write。 Never boring。

Towles is fantastic at the setup, and his plotting and characters get more compelling with each book。 One star off because I think he rushes his endings。 Also, it's a little frustrating when the title and the early story set one up for a great American road trip in a time when the country is moving West, then (spoiler) the plot instead moves East。 What happens is good, I especially like Billy and the connections to Ulysses and The Odyssey, but as someone who loves a road trip and was fascinated Towles is fantastic at the setup, and his plotting and characters get more compelling with each book。 One star off because I think he rushes his endings。 Also, it's a little frustrating when the title and the early story set one up for a great American road trip in a time when the country is moving West, then (spoiler) the plot instead moves East。 What happens is good, I especially like Billy and the connections to Ulysses and The Odyssey, but as someone who loves a road trip and was fascinated with the idea of an early American cross country jaunt, I felt more than a little teased, even if the reader does get a good road trip in the end anyway。 But the characters (Duchess! Woolly!) are terrific, and if you like audiobooks, this one is terrific, with Dion Graham, Marin Ireland, and especially Edoardo Ballerini in superb form。 。。。more

That works out for him, until it doesn't。) It takes about a hundred pages for any of them to get out of Nebraska。 And a surprisingly small amount of time is spent on the Lincoln Highway。 The foursome's escapade develops in completely unexpected ways。 There's a large supporting cast of expertly-drawn characters。 Their situations are full of humor and (alas) pathos。 Enough said。 If you need my recommendation: just read it; you won't be sorry。 。。。more

Amor Towles has done it again; written a totally captivating and engrossing story rich in historic detail, complicated and colorful characters, and stylistic dialogue。 The weaving of the intersection of the characters back stories and individual fates is so well done; he keeps you reading long after you should have gone to bed! He is an artist, truly, with great craftsmanship; structure, arc, foreshadowing, well crafted sentences。 Just a joy to read。 One of the few recent contemporary novels I t Amor Towles has done it again; written a totally captivating and engrossing story rich in historic detail, complicated and colorful characters, and stylistic dialogue。 The weaving of the intersection of the characters back stories and individual fates is so well done; he keeps you reading long after you should have gone to bed! I found this to be a charming coming of age story, with wonderful main characters, painted with Towles’ usual astute observations and the many anecdotes that comprise someone’s story。 It had undertones of John Irving and even Steinbeck, to me。 Towles presents the reader with a completely immersive world so that I felt like I had been on an adventure along with the characters。 Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book。

I truly enjoyed reading Towles' admiring shoutouts to the various American landmarks and I absolutely fell in love with the characters who were really well fleshed out。 Wooly was by far my favorite, showing the sweet characteristics of a child, with surprising wisdom and insight。 The plot moves along at a steady clip thanks to young Billy's love for books and his plan to reunite with his mother, which partially spurs the journey to begin with。 Mr。 Towles also makes reference to various social and racial inequalities of the time that sadly still exist today。 I must admit, he is a very thoughtful writer in this respect, including many different types of people in his stories。I must point out that this novel was reminiscent of This Tender Land (which was a 5-star for me) with mostly older characters。For more of my reviews, please check out my blog at www。mamasgottaread。blogspot。com or follow me on Instagram at www。instagram。com/mamasgottaread ! 。。。more

You have to understand the rhythm of the narrative is slow, but I really enjoyed it。

This was a clear 5-star read for me。 I was totally enchanted by this story—more specifically the characters and the writing。 If you loved This Tender Land, then The Lincoln Highway is very similar。 It's set in the innocent days of post-WW2 America。 It stars four kids, ranging in age from 18 to 8, who take off on an adventure on the open road。 It's a cross between The Odyssey and The Wizard of Oz and a half-dozen Shakespeare plays。I loved the alternating POVs, although I wasn't sure why some were This was a clear 5-star read for me。 I was totally enchanted by this story—more specifically the characters and the writing。 If you loved This Tender Land, then The Lincoln Highway is very similar。 It's set in the innocent days of post-WW2 America。 It stars four kids, ranging in age from 18 to 8, who take off on an adventure on the open road。 It's a cross between The Odyssey and The Wizard of Oz and a half-dozen Shakespeare plays。I loved the alternating POVs, although I wasn't sure why some were in first person and others weren't。 We're supposed to identify most with Emmett and Duchess, who foil each other brilliantly。 Then, Billy and Wooly are obvious foils, too, although their narrations are in third person。 I also loved how the side characters got cameo chapters all to themselves。Also, what's the deal with the dashes? They're subbed for the opening quotation marks in dialogue。 Can someone explain this? (The only quotation marks in the entire book appear around Dennis's name, which I think is hilarious because they're air quotes—as if "Dennis" is a name that represents a whole class of men like him。)I love Emmett and Billy, who represent everything that's good about youth。 They are sincere and genuine and what you see is what you get。 Then throw Wooly and Duchess into the mix, and, gosh, those two! They are both so deeply tragic, yet they provide much of the book's comic relief。 Duchess is exquisitely rendered。 He's。。。would you call it sociopathic? He's at once likable and persuasive。 But he's also dangerous, not because he's aggressive or mean, but because he's so single-minded and incredibly adept at twisting reason and logic to fit his purposes。 The ending。 Yeesh。 I wish it were different, and, honestly, I'm not 100-percent sure it aligns with the rest of the book。。。you can make a case that it doesn't, but there's an equally good case to be made that it does。If you love Steinbeck and old-timey stories of a younger America, then this'll hit the spot, I think。 。。。more

The characters were surprisingly believable as well as unbelievable。 The whole adventure with good and evil people popping in and out of their journeys each one leaving lessons for learning about life。 It was interesting but I found myself skimming threw pages to get into the meat of the story。 More unnecessary descriptions to make the book long。 The author writes great stories and this was the second book of Towles I enjoyed both。

Like many, I fell in love with A Gentleman In Moscow when it came out。 I felt like I knew so many of the characters personally。 I was good friends with them all。 I had been excited yet a bit trepidatious to start The Lincoln Highway because of that。 Would I be able to embrace this new cast of characters? Fast but long read。 Interesting characters and point of views。 Very well constructed and told。 Once I gave up on the notion of the highway being the center of it all and them returning to it, I was able to enjoy it a lot more。

I really enjoyed this book - I was a bit wary picking it up at first as struggled getting into his book "A gentleman in Moscow" which I put down after a hundred or so pages。 However, this book I found much more fun - the characters are a bit larger than life, which I guess is needed for a novel, but I enjoyed their interactions and the way the tale developed。 Overall, a good read - may even have another go at "A gentleman in Moscow" I really enjoyed this book - I was a bit wary picking it up at first as struggled getting into his book "A gentleman in Moscow" which I put down after a hundred or so pages。 However, this book I found much more fun - the characters are a bit larger than life, which I guess is needed for a novel, but I enjoyed their interactions and the way the tale developed。 Overall, a good read - may even have another go at "A gentleman in Moscow" 。。。more

Very disappointed, especially having loved A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility。 The writing too simple, characters not engaging and the plot (not sure if I just don’t like on-the-road genre) just unnecessary complicated and lengthy。 Didn’t feel like a Towles book。
