YAAAAAASSSSSSSSS!!!!this has solidified Hendrix as a must buy author for me。 It’s funny, it’s campy, but My Best Friend’s Exorcism still has a few truly horrific moments throughout。 I could not put it down once I got to the final act。 I’ve heard people complain about how Hendrix writes female characters, arguing that they are one dimensional, but they are written perfectly for the vibe he is going for and the male characters are written in the exact same way。 Classic nostalgic horror film charac YAAAAAASSSSSSSSS!!!!this has solidified Hendrix as a must buy author for me。 It’s funny, it’s campy, but My Best Friend’s Exorcism still has a few truly horrific moments throughout。 I could not put it down once I got to the final act。 I’ve heard people complain about how Hendrix writes female characters, arguing that they are one dimensional, but they are written perfectly for the vibe he is going for and the male characters are written in the exact same way。 Classic nostalgic horror film characters have certain archetypes they fit into and Hendrix understands this。 Plus, I like them anyways- there is an amazing story of adolescent female friendship here and the protagonist is likable enough to find yourself rooting for her。 Overall this is a 5 star read to me。 It is very similar to movies like Jennifer’s Body and many moments even reminded me of Mean Girls (if Janice instead had insisted Regina George was possessed by the spirit of Satan)。 。。。more

With the news that this book is being turned into a movie I can't say I am surprised。 The book is a fast paced horror story that was a breeze to read。 I found myself not being able to put it down as I was caught up with the story。The offers a different take than most exorcism horror stories of the past。 It focuses on friendship and younger people handling the most serious situations。 It is a really great read。 With the news that this book is being turned into a movie I can't say I am surprised。 The book is a fast paced horror story that was a breeze to read。 I found myself not being able to put it down as I was caught up with the story。The offers a different take than most exorcism horror stories of the past。 It focuses on friendship and younger people handling the most serious situations。 It is a really great read。 。。。more

100% horror, 100% eighties, 100% gross。 I can't say enough about this book。 But what's most shocking is the emotional punch the book delivers when you least expect it。 I didn't expect to fall in love with these characters more than I have with any other book this year。 You don’t see this cover and expect to be sobbing at the end… but I was。 Hendrix has earned himself a life-long fan。 Bravo, sir, bravo。 100% horror, 100% eighties, 100% gross。 I can't say enough about this book。 But what's most shocking is the emotional punch the book delivers when you least expect it。 I didn't expect to fall in love with these characters more than I have with any other book this year。 You don’t see this cover and expect to be sobbing at the end… but I was。 Hendrix has earned himself a life-long fan。 Bravo, sir, bravo。 。。。more

This book had a grip on me the whole time。 A terrifying, heartfelt, disgusting, beautiful, hopeless look inside of friendship from the mind of Grady Hendrix。 This book made me doubt everything and still in the end made me smile。

I think Grady Hendrix is becoming one of my favorite authors。 I love his writing and storytelling! Beautiful friendship here

okay this was great。 here are two aspects of this book i liked and one that i didn't like:the first aspect is setting。 it is incredibly 80s (full of references to all sorts of pop culture, with each chapter being the title of some 80s hit) and it is incredibly southern (set in charleston)。 now, obviously i was born in '98。 but, like many people in my generation, i eat up media set in the 80s。 its different, its interesting, the music was great, the movies were equally great。 there's just so much okay this was great。 here are two aspects of this book i liked and one that i didn't like:the first aspect is setting。 it is incredibly 80s (full of references to all sorts of pop culture, with each chapter being the title of some 80s hit) and it is incredibly southern (set in charleston)。 now, obviously i was born in '98。 but, like many people in my generation, i eat up media set in the 80s。 its different, its interesting, the music was great, the movies were equally great。 there's just so much to work with there, and i appreciate learning new phrases and idiosyncrasies i wouldn't normally be privy to。 shifting to location, hendrix does a great job of describing the history of the town and outlining where the story takes place; he also doesn't gloss over the racism that would very much exist in this setting。 his writing is descriptive but not overloading。 we are able to easily picture that fateful first night on rich girl margaret's marsh property, the spanish moss hanging from decades-old trees, the ancient, colonial-style homes belonging to proud white families whose noses are too high up in the air to realize everything is breaking down around them (because of them)。 being from georgia, i've been to charleston a few times, so i especially enjoyed picturing the setting while i read。the other aspect i loved - the genre i was expecting vs the genre i got。 at its core this was a story about friendship。 based on the cover, i was expecting a gripping horror set in the sweat-dripping heat of an 80's summer, but what i got instead was a coming-of-age, tongue-in-cheek adolescent dramedy about some terrible things that happen to a girl and her best friend。 i am not mad about this。 in fact, i thoroughly enjoyed it。 i realized what is scary for me is when the horror is atmospheric, taking place in the surroundings。 in this book, and maybe in hendrix's others (i haven't read his other novels), what is 'scary,' or the surface-level idea of scary, is *presented* to you。 it is the exorcism。 exorcisms are scary。 and for the most part, the exorcism in this book is scary。 it's full of body horror, creepy crawlies, a terrifying demon, the works。 but that's not the true horror here。 it is the nasty insults heated girls throw at one another。 it is the lengths at which those burly high school boys will go to demean you。 it is the adults, from school administration/faculty at pretentious ablemarle academy to gretchen's abusive, helicopter proper southern mother to abby's own exhausted, skeptical poor mom to police officers who refuse to believe you。 it is the unbridled rage of not being taken seriously by those who you trust, because you are a kid and therefore inferior。 it is all the grossness on the outside and the inside of growing up and cracking under the pressure of expectations。 there are several themes present in this book all seeking to communicate the same thing-- rich vs。 poor, adults vs。 kids, oppressors vs。 victims, men vs。 women。finally, the one aspect i didn't like - the end。 i don't want a chapter summarizing the rest of their lives and telling me what their friendship looked like post-exorcism。 let me leave it up to my imagination!! i understand the desire for a full circle moment with halley's comet, but it really wasn't necessary。 i don't want a 'where are they now。' that kinda thing works with some stories, but for me, not with this one。 let this book be what made it great - a detailed account of one poor girl's possessing in the summer of '88 and her subsequent exorcism, all through the lens of the one person willing to stand by her through it all。 。。。more

I could not put this book down! Partly because it took me back to being a teenage girl again。 I loved the back story on how the 2 girls became best friends and the suspense leading up to the main plot。 Although, I thought the ending was a bit anticlimactic。 But still a good entertaining read!

It captured so well not the ebb and flow of childhood friendship into your teen years, under the umbrella of this creepy, spooky theme。 Can't wait for the movie to come out in September! No, not for me。 I understand talking about racism and how important it is, but not like this。I also heard there were topics of SA and EDs in this book, and I DNFed before I could get to those parts, but with this writing I don’t trust the author to handle it very well。I’m sorry, I really wanted to like this author, but he doesn’t work for me。 It would be okay, if he didn’t write in the problematic ways he does in this book。 I encourage anyone to read this book with a more critical eye, please。 。。。more

Grady Hendrix has a surprising feel for the friendship of two teenage girls。 He's created a pretty realistic friend group, which makes the things that follow all the more impactful。 Four friends try acid for the first time。 Though it doesn't seem to be working, one of them disappears, not turning back up until the next morning。 Everything changes after that。 In some ways, it's like Mean Girls with a demon。 Some parts are hard to get through, not because they're graphic or anything like that, but Grady Hendrix has a surprising feel for the friendship of two teenage girls。 He's created a pretty realistic friend group, which makes the things that follow all the more impactful。 Four friends try acid for the first time。 Though it doesn't seem to be working, one of them disappears, not turning back up until the next morning。 Everything changes after that。 In some ways, it's like Mean Girls with a demon。 Some parts are hard to get through, not because they're graphic or anything like that, but because things get hopeless for several of the characters, and it's frustrating to watch a young girl trying so hard to fix something when the adults in her life either ignore her or actively attack her credibility。 A good book with a more realistic ending than these types of books usually get。 。。。more

My Best Friend's Exorcism was awesome! 3。5, the tapeworm。。 omg barf。 I got a kick out of the Lemon Brothers Faith and Fitness Show, probably my favorite part of the book。 Definitely Horror Comedy with enough best friend, 80s, teenage angst vibes to make it great。 I appreciate there wasn’t a grotesque possession masturb*tion scene like in Head Full of Ghost or The Exorcist。 I feel weirded out when a grown dude writes a possession story of a teenage girl with scenes like that but this one didn’t take itself too seriously and was still 3。5, the tapeworm。。 omg barf。 I got a kick out of the Lemon Brothers Faith and Fitness Show, probably my favorite part of the book。 Definitely Horror Comedy with enough best friend, 80s, teenage angst vibes to make it great。 I appreciate there wasn’t a grotesque possession masturb*tion scene like in Head Full of Ghost or The Exorcist。 I feel weirded out when a grown dude writes a possession story of a teenage girl with scenes like that but this one didn’t take itself too seriously and was still gross but fun。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 I spent pretty much the whole day reading it I couldn’t put it down。 It had the right amount of spooky and 80s vibes。 Also I love the book cover design looking like an old vhs。 The power of friendship is strong。 I can’t wait to watch the movie。 I hope it’s as good as the book。

Read it in three days over the summer。 The tone is special, the horror being subjacent to the high school drama in the 90s is spot on, and the horror scenes are really chilling。 Will for sure read a lot more from this author。

Rating this a 3。5 out of 5 stars。 I liked it enough to finish it but there were definitely parts I skimmed because it was repetitive。 The story didn’t need to be told in this long of a book。 Not too scary, feels like a PG-13 horror。
