I dropped the book at first when it took so much of my time to do the Test your level exercises (I want to do things meticulously)。 But then, I read chapter 7 and was enraptured by it。 I still remember myself laughing when reading the sentence describing an egoist in chapter 3 (if my memory serves me right): “This is a tough world, pal, dog eat dog and all that, and I, for one, would not be left behind”。 It was incredibly fun! This is the best book that I have read in years。 He was kind, insight I dropped the book at first when it took so much of my time to do the Test your level exercises (I want to do things meticulously)。 But then, I read chapter 7 and was enraptured by it。 I still remember myself laughing when reading the sentence describing an egoist in chapter 3 (if my memory serves me right): “This is a tough world, pal, dog eat dog and all that, and I, for one, would not be left behind”。 It was incredibly fun! This is the best book that I have read in years。 He was kind, insightful, assuring and encouraging。 His method was simple but brilliant: active recall, citing etymology and telling stories out of words。 He was not boring, arrogant and patronizing like other authors。 It is not a surprise to me to see that he passed away a long time ago because such an author with that writing style is hard to find in our time。 Still, I felt so sad and literally cried upon his death。GAME CHANGER is the word that I would use for this book。 My takeaways: 1。 I see a change in my mindset。 It makes me look at words with such enthusiasm and urge to learn unlike the uneasy feelings I had when deeming them as chores that I had to do。2。 Words are powerful。 The author stated that we use words to connect with each other, and with a rich vocabulary, we are able to convey our ideas in the most lucid way。 Even though I was a skeptic at first, thinking he exaggerated the importance of the book, I was like “wow” afterwards。 I had moments like “OMG the words are so logically related, it all makes sense now”。 3。 This book also helps me understand more about life in general while reflecting on myself。 It is as if I saw a light in my life and I found a new good friend。 I was excited, grateful, and I was happy because I saw progress。4。 I believe in the fact that things can be learnt in an easy and engaging way。 I also learn that pretentious writing is something that I should do away with。 However, I have to remind you that the book has been around for a long time so a few words would not have the exact meanings as stated in the book (e。g。 the word “alumni” can now refer to both former male and female students of a university while he mentioned alumni referring to male students only)。 There are also some typos here and there but that is fine。 This book is just a casual but fervent “Hi” from Linguistics to the public。 In my opinion, it is not as in-depth as the boring etymology book one friend recommended to me 8 years ago, but it’s worth reading。Friends and relatives, just read it。 。。。more

I have had this book for over a decade now, and I have tried to finish it a number of times。 But every time I started it, I would just give up after a few chapters。 The closest I ever came to completing this book was about halfway through it。 But this time, I was determined to finish it, no matter how long it took。 After more than a month, I completed the book。Unlike other vocabulary books that teach you only the words, this book teaches you the roots and then teaches you words based on the root I have had this book for over a decade now, and I have tried to finish it a number of times。 But every time I started it, I would just give up after a few chapters。 The closest I ever came to completing this book was about halfway through it。 But this time, I was determined to finish it, no matter how long it took。 After more than a month, I completed the book。Unlike other vocabulary books that teach you only the words, this book teaches you the roots and then teaches you words based on the roots。 So if you ever come across another word that has the same root, you will be able to guess the meaning。 I think this is the perfect way to increase your vocabulary。 Anybody can easily follow the book and learn the words。 The numerous exercises will make sure you learn all the words。 I will recommend this book to anybody who wants to learn new words。 This book is especially helpful for students preparing for competitive exams。 。。。more

It wasn't that enjoyable when I was reading it。 But looking back, I actually learned a lot。 This book taught me so much about the English language, and as someone who has English as their second language, it clarified a lot of things and made me see patterns that I have never noticed before。 The only thing I want to say about this book is that I think it should be called "Word power made hard" because it was pretty hard, and I already forgot many things they talked about in the book (because it It wasn't that enjoyable when I was reading it。 But looking back, I actually learned a lot。 This book taught me so much about the English language, and as someone who has English as their second language, it clarified a lot of things and made me see patterns that I have never noticed before。 The only thing I want to say about this book is that I think it should be called "Word power made hard" because it was pretty hard, and I already forgot many things they talked about in the book (because it was very long)。 So I guess I should consider reading it again。 。。。more

The methodology of the book (etymological review of the words) is excellent; it does not only increase your vocabulary, but also teaches ideas and broadens your knowledge of vocabulary building process based on their Greek and Latin roots。
