Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work, the inspiration for HBO's upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon

"The thrill of Fire & Blood is the thrill of all Martin's fantasy work: familiar myths debunked, the whole trope table flipped。"--Entertainment Weekly

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen--the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria--took up residence on Dragonstone。 Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart。

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel's worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty-five black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley--including five illustrations exclusive to the trade paperback edition。 Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed。

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros。

Praise for Fire & Blood

"A masterpiece of popular historical fiction。"--The Sunday Times

"The saga is a rich and dark one, full of both the title's promised elements。 。 。 。 It's hard not to thrill to the descriptions of dragons engaging in airborne combat, or the dilemma of whether defeated rulers should 'bend the knee, ' 'take the black' and join the Night's Watch, or simply meet an inventive and horrible end。"--The Guardian

Once again Mr。 Martin fails to deliver。 If you want an outline of the history of the Targaryen's then you might be satisfied。 If you're looking for a novel in the vain of the original series, save yourself the effort。 It is not here。 Once again Mr。 Martin fails to deliver。 If you want an outline of the history of the Targaryen's then you might be satisfied。 If you're looking for a novel in the vain of the original series, save yourself the effort。 It is not here。 。。。more

Fire and Blood is a long and deep read。 It offers more fascinating insight into the ascendancy and tragic fall of one of the great houses of Westeros or Valayria to be precise。 As to how the author comes up such exotic names is still an enigma to me。 The cast of complex characters is enormous。 Whoever reads Fire and Blood gets to appreciate the true epicness of the world of Westeros as created by George R。 R。 Martin。 I truly enjoyed this one。 I leave you with this to ponder on "All young men suspect they are immortal,” Grand Maester Munkun writes in the True Telling, “and whenever a young warrior tastes the heady wine of victory, suspicion becomes certainty。 Yet the confidence of youth counts for little against the cunning of age" 。。。more

“The narrative non-fiction history form” is what this genre is referred to at the end of the book。 It was as interesting as reading the Bible。 I will never read another book like this again。 Boring, no narrative。 Just 900 pages of dry fake history。 💨

What an incredible writing! Reads like real history。 All of it feels real!

A lot of this felt like homework but a breakdown of the Dance of Dragons felt appropriately epic。

George R。R。 Martin has so much fun with fake history, bringing up conflicting accounts, speculation, and a large lack of first-hand perspectives quite often。 It is a great way to tell this kind of story, as it covers so much ground and some of it lacks the dramatic chops that something like ASOIAF has (e。g。 Jaehaerys and his road-building)。 However, I found a lot of this extremely interesting, and the parts that bored me never lasted long。 It is certainly the most nerdy thing I've ever read, but George R。R。 Martin has so much fun with fake history, bringing up conflicting accounts, speculation, and a large lack of first-hand perspectives quite often。 It is a great way to tell this kind of story, as it covers so much ground and some of it lacks the dramatic chops that something like ASOIAF has (e。g。 Jaehaerys and his road-building)。 However, I found a lot of this extremely interesting, and the parts that bored me never lasted long。 It is certainly the most nerdy thing I've ever read, but if it's good too who cares! 。。。more

The Worldbuilding of Westeros & Beyond is just something else。I mean there is Erikson, that has the grandest, most epic and huge in scope (with all it's meanings)。。。There is Jordan, that has the deepest and most complex culture-building, -handling and -evolution。。。There is Sanderson, that has the most purpose fulfilling design。。。There is Tolkien, that has the most detailed language and poetry。。。There are soooo many more worlds to be mentioned in this list。。。But Westeros just has something to it。 The Worldbuilding of Westeros & Beyond is just something else。I mean there is Erikson, that has the grandest, most epic and huge in scope (with all it's meanings)。。。There is Jordan, that has the deepest and most complex culture-building, -handling and -evolution。。。There is Sanderson, that has the most purpose fulfilling design。。。There is Tolkien, that has the most detailed language and poetry。。。There are soooo many more worlds to be mentioned in this list。。。But Westeros just has something to it。 Most realistic-feeling? This was a reread, and I still enjoyed it。What did drive me nuts was the series of asides, particularly those that said "but that's another story," felt gimmicky。 This was a reread, and I still enjoyed it。What did drive me nuts was the series of asides, particularly those that said "but that's another story," felt gimmicky。 。。。more

This read as a school history book。 While it has some good information it was a extremely boring and long read。

Initially I thought this book would be too much of a historical retelling but (despite there being many of them) I got invested in the characters nevertheless as it still seemed like a story。

I had read this book nearly four years ago when it first came out and remember absolutely devouring it。 This time around, in anticipation of the new HBO series "House of the Dragon", I took my time throughout the summer to read this tome on and off。 Because that is really the only way to describe this book, it is truly a tome。 A page and a half or even two paragraphs alone can tell SO much of a story, or sub-story that is happening at the same time as the Targaryen dynasty is in its prime in Wes I had read this book nearly four years ago when it first came out and remember absolutely devouring it。 This time around, in anticipation of the new HBO series "House of the Dragon", I took my time throughout the summer to read this tome on and off。 Because that is really the only way to describe this book, it is truly a tome。 A page and a half or even two paragraphs alone can tell SO much of a story, or sub-story that is happening at the same time as the Targaryen dynasty is in its prime in Westeros。 I also wanted to do a re-read as to familiarize myself not only with the characters that will be at play in this new TV series, but just to be brought back into the world of Ice and Fire。 It really does feel nice returning to it, both reading about it and now starting to watch the new series。Definitely recommend this as a re-read to others, especially if you just take your leisurely time with it, makes it enjoyable and allows time to digest, as it does cover over 130 years of history。 I also know fans of the TV shows, both old and new, might not be interested in reading the books ever, but I'd say give this one a try。 The Targaryen family is very interesting, with many different characters especially when you reach the reign of King Jaehaerys I and Good Queen Alysanne。 。。。more

I was not expecting to enjoy so much a book commonly labeled as 'Martin's worst book' or 'the book nobody asked for'。Very engaging, a suprisingly page turned with lots of political scheming and betrayals, well written and, of course, lots of awesome dragons。 I was not expecting to enjoy so much a book commonly labeled as 'Martin's worst book' or 'the book nobody asked for'。Very engaging, a suprisingly page turned with lots of political scheming and betrayals, well written and, of course, lots of awesome dragons。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 First off, I decided to read Fire & Blood for a pretty simple reason。 With the show House of the Dragon starting to release an episode a week, I thought it would be a good idea to get to grips with House Targaryen’s vibrant history。 If I’m being honest I knew nothing about the Targaryens apart from the obvious, meaning Aegon and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys。 As well as more present day with the Mad King Aerys, his son Rhaegar and Robert’s Rebellion。 I was very interested in learning though。I First off, I decided to read Fire & Blood for a pretty simple reason。 With the show House of the Dragon starting to release an episode a week, I thought it would be a good idea to get to grips with House Targaryen’s vibrant history。 If I’m being honest I knew nothing about the Targaryens apart from the obvious, meaning Aegon and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys。 As well as more present day with the Mad King Aerys, his son Rhaegar and Robert’s Rebellion。 I was very interested in learning though。I wasn’t disappointed at all, in fact I’m really impressed。 Imagine spending so much time thinking up the history of a house in your fictional world, that’s amazing。 And for the majority I really enjoyed this book, I’ve seen people say it reads like a history book。 But that’s the whole point, it is a history book。 A very detailed history book might I add。 In the main story we do hear small clips about the Targaryens of the past but it isn’t much。 I was especially interested to learn about Alysanne Targaryen, otherwise known as “Good Queen Alysanne” and her husband King Jaehaerys。 I wasn’t disappointed, they brought a level of peace to Westeros that I doubt will ever be seen again, especially with the Lannisters currently in charge in Kings Landing。 。。。more

It’s definitely a deep dive into the Targaryen history from the Game of Thrones universe, but it hovers at a 3。5 for me。 I can’t wait to see what the show does with its source material。

Interesting read, a pretty unique writing style, unique difficult to read sometimes but I must appreciate all the work put into the world building and the authenticity。 Definitely worth the read。

An exciting return to Westeros and all its plotting, scheming, and dragons。 I forgot how much I enjoyed Martin's writing! I like that this book spanned over a hundred years yet still had plenty of depth。 I even thought it was more cohesive than the last two Game of Thrones books; all the storylines went somewhere。 The artwork throughout the book is gorgeous。 Having the book written in 3rd person by a Archmaester who was comparing different historical accounts was a cool idea that worked well。 Th An exciting return to Westeros and all its plotting, scheming, and dragons。 I forgot how much I enjoyed Martin's writing! I'm excited for the HBO series, because the Dance of Dragons war of succession between the Targaryens ought to make great television。 It's a shame the show can't focus on the entirety of this book; the Yellow Toad of Dorne, and her intransigent guerilla warfare against Aegon the Conqueror, will be sorely missed。 。。。more

I mean, I friggin love the world of GRRM。 He’s created such a rich and deep history of the world and is such an incredible writer; I was completely pulled in。 The Targs are all awesome and insane, and it’s such a melodrama, but it’s just so rad。 This book is written like a narrated history textbook, and there were some points that were a little dull, but overall it was such a cool look into the history of Westeros and how we got to where ASOIAF begins。 I loved the description of the sources for I mean, I friggin love the world of GRRM。 He’s created such a rich and deep history of the world and is such an incredible writer; I was completely pulled in。 The Targs are all awesome and insane, and it’s such a melodrama, but it’s just so rad。 This book is written like a narrated history textbook, and there were some points that were a little dull, but overall it was such a cool look into the history of Westeros and how we got to where ASOIAF begins。 I loved the description of the sources for the book, which really made it that much more immersive, with differing and disputed accounts。 Overall, though dense, a really enjoyable read。 。。。more
